Bill Clinton Uses Facts to Destroy Romney’s Claims About the 47 Percent
On Face The Nation, Factchecker in Chief Bill Clinton destroyed Mitt Romney’s claim that the 47% are victims with history and facts about working class Americans.

Bob Schieffer asked Clinton if Romney’s 47% comments were smart politics.
The former president answered,
No, but it’s interesting. You know, I know a lot of higher income people. A lot of whom help me do my work, and they’re supporting Gov. Romney, and a lot of people say things like that. But I think it’s worth pointing out, if you look at that 47%. First, they do pay taxes. They pay Social Security taxes. They pay Medicare taxes. They pay state and local taxes.
Second, they are out of the federal income tax pool for two reasons. One is the economic crash, which lowered a lot people’s incomes. Even a lot of the newer jobs don’t pay high incomes. Now, the second reason is interesting. It’s a bipartisan reason in the past. It’s because the combined impacts of the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Credit. I doubled the Earned Income Tax Credit, which I think President Ford signed into law, and which President Reagan supported. And it’s refundable, if you work and you got kids and your income’s low, the government will actually refund the credit if you drop out of owing income tax. It was designed to support working families.
Then we put in a Child Tax Credit, which when President Bush passed all of those tax cuts that’s what he did for middle class people. He doubled the Child Tax Credit to a thousand dollars. Then when President Obama came in, and he had a Democratic Congress, and the economy was reeling, they increased the Earned Income Tax Credit so you could get a little more if you had more than three kids. So an enormous number of these people who were dropped out were dropped out for reasons of work and family, not dependents. These people are working their hearts out. They would love to make enough money to pay federal income tax. We were all before trying to help them with their work and their child rearing.
Schieffer asked former President Clinton if Romney understood who he was talking about, and he answered, “I don’t know. Because, you know the primary they ran kept pushing them all to the right. I remember when they all raised their hands and said would you oppose the budget, a new budget, if it had ten dollars in spending cuts for every one dollar of tax increase, and every one of them said, yeah, I’d be against that. So they got pushed further and further, and further out there, and I think you know, you don’t just purge all that out of your system when you start running for the general election.”
If you read between the lines, President Clinton was telling America that Romney is just another member of the super rich and his comments about the forty seven percent are what a lot of wealthy Republicans believe. Clinton showed the difference between a leader who understands who the working class of America are, and a candidate who has absolutely no clue.
Either Romney has no idea about the role former Republican presidents Ford, Reagan, and George W. Bush playing in cutting taxes for a group of people that he labeled victims, or maybe he does know, and that’s why his tax plan has to eliminate a lot of deductions the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. Romney could very well believe that the moochers don’t deserve the EITC or Child Tax Credit.
Bill Clinton used history and facts to show Mitt Romney and everyone on the right who shares his beliefs how wrong they are about nearly half the country.
The giant contradiction in all of this is that Romney claims to value work, but he doesn’t want to reward Americans for working hard and taking care of their families. Mitt Romney has no clue what it is like to be middle class or a member of the working poor in this country. As evidenced by his own remarks, he appears to be absolutely clueless as to who half the country is and what their daily lives are like.
Mitt Romney is running for president based on a country club ideology that looks down on everyone who isn’t rich. Romney seems to believe that by virtue of their wealth, the super rich are superior human beings. This attitude leads one to believe that Romney isn’t running a presidential campaign. He’s engaging in a hostile takeover.
President Obama and the Democrats still feel your pain. Mitt Romney and the Republicans think you are a deadbeat.
If this is part of the argument that Bill Clinton is going to take to voters on behalf of President Obama, Mitt Romney is in a world of trouble.

President Clinton also needs to put an emphasis on the fact that our troops are in that 47% and question whether they feel like victims? That’ll get to everyone, except the 1%, but especially our men & women in uniform & their families & friends. No stone must be left unturned. That will resonate especially because Romney thought the troops weren’t important enough to acknowledge at the RNC & said so.

As a a soon to retire 20 year vet I feel more secure with Mitt Romney than watching my country torn from under my feet with President Obama. Don’t assume the military likes the President just because he is the Commander in Chief. The vast majority do not like his domestic policy on illegal immigration nor the fighting against state rights and voter ID. This year the DOD is pushing extremely hard to get everyone to vote and if our vote makes a difference, it won’t be for Obama.

Dory Hayes, thank you for your service as I appreciate all our military men and women. All my family served honorably in the military. Interestingly all are NOT voting for the GOP. It is sad that you will vote against your own self-interest. Others before me have pointed out that the GOP does not have your back. Why would they veto pay raises for our military, why would they fail to pass the Jobs Bills for veterans. Can’t believe that there is something the Dems have done to pull the rug out from under you. I wish you all the best, if you can’t vote for the man, (while I think he is the Superior Candidate and has been an excellent President); I think you ought to take a look at the parties. In my opinion the GOP only helped Military Corporations profit from the blood, sweat and tears of our soldiers in the Middle East, and have turned their backs on people like you. Do you realize some contractors were making 4, 5 and 6 times your rate doing far less important work. I know my nephew was one pulling in 180,000 for basic mechanic work, not skilled work. Do you realize how much of our deficit was actually profit to these big Military money machines like Haliburton?
Look at the parties, my suggestion, and think about the future of your children, and grandchildren. Who wants to help them through college? At least President Obama never fails to thank our soldiers, and overlook by Romney at the GOP convention. Look at the voting record of the GOP these past 3 years,not one job was created by them. First off thank you for your service. My husband a Vietnam Vet rarely hears a thank you for all he gave so many years ago. But I am so sad that you would support someone who’s religion requires him to be a conscientious objector and will obey his religious dictates before what is best for USA. I only hope that your decision is based on the fact that you truly believe that Mr Romney (a devout Mormon, something you should Google) is the best choice for our great nation and not a result of a blind hate of people of color. If you truly look at the facts President Obama has done an exceptional job given the state of things he stepped into. I pray that you will seek out the facts and know the truth before you cast your vote.

The Mormon church does not require its members to be conscientious objectors. They have nothing against war. If you go into the military, you still are expected to do your mission.

First, thank you for you service. Secondly, I respectfully disagree with you because you are one of the few military I have heard in support of Romney. The republican party is not your grandfathers party. I have many military in my family and they have opposite views that you have so as we struggle through this endeavor to find the answers I wish you the best. The job bills act for you guys was just voted against by ALL republicans so that should tell you what little respect they have, at least in my humble opinion. My husband was a vietnam vet and this country treated him like crap and the way they thanked him was to let him die with cancer with no help to his family while denying that it was caused by agent orange. No one can prove where cancer comes from you might say but my husband was and is the only person in his family to die with cancer. He was only 42. He had all the symptoms of agent orange but it was total denial. It matters who we put into office. I am only sharing that to let you know I do speak from my heart as this subject is dear to me. I sincerely do thank you for your service to our country and I also sincerely respect your choice in a candidate. Thank you sir.

Thank you for your service, Dory. I have some questions for you: how is it that you know what every member of the military thinks about President Obama, how do you know how all of them will vote in November, what proof do you have that all of them are as upset about the president’s immigration policies and his opposition to voter ID laws as you?
Something tells me that your opposition to the president on immigration and voter ID laws can be connected to your consumption of information from RW news sources. President Obama has deported more undocumented immigrants than any U.S. president. The lie that was told about Ohio’s voter ID law and the military was just that–a lie meant to mislead and deceive Americans. The lawsuit the president filed was never meant to take away the right of active duty military to vote early. The purpose of the lawsuit was to allow veterans and citizens to vote early ALONG with active duty members of the military. The polls were going to be open anyway, so there would be no problem with allowing everyone in Ohio to vote early. If the president’s actions on the DREAM Act is an issue with you, I suggest you take it up with republicans, who in 2007, refused to work with President Bush when he wanted to reform our immigration system. Had they not wimped out, the issue of immigration reform would have been a done deal by the time Barack Obama became president.

Response on Ohio was meant to focus on the president’s lawsuit and the military and NOT on voter ID. Those are two separate issues.
Dory, you should access the Brennan Center’s web site. The Brennan Center investigates allegations of, and incidents of, voter fraud, and it has reached the conclusion that voter fraud is not a major issue in in-person voting in this country. If voter fraud were prevalent, I could see the need for these states to pass stringent voter ID law, but since it isn’t, the only conclusion I can reach is that these legislators are passing voter ID laws to suppress the votes of some of our citizens. This isn’t speculation on my part, Dory, it’s fact. I suggest you do a bit of research on voter fraud, voter ID, and voter suppression, and please keep in mind that just because something doesn’t impact you negatively, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a negative impact on your fellow citizens.

So tell me, what will you do when you go to the VA for health care and find out there isn’t any VA anymore. Instead, your hero, Romney has ended the Department of Veterans Affairs and has given you a book of coupons to get medical insurance in the private market. Even 20 year veterans with Tricare will find themselves with a book of coupons.
That won’t happen if President Obama is reelected. I’m a disabled Vietnam Veteran, although I didn’t became disabled in the war I became disabled within the past 5 years. What about veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan who have recently become disabled from their service? Should they get a book of coupons? You are short shrifting your fellow veterans. As far as I am concerned Romney can take his medicare coupons and VA coupons and stick them up his rectal sphincter.

Could you please tell me sir how it is that you know that the vast majority of those in the military do not support our President of The United States? Most of the men in my parent’s generation were in the military, many of my friends served in Viet Nam, I have a nephew who was in the military, children of friends who were and the vast majority of them support our President.
It is primarily those in the south who continue to fight the civil war in their hearts who are against this president and they continue vote against their own best interests while dragging this once great nation down to 3rd world status. The middle class has declined under policies of the GOP while the most wealthy have flourished to the point of being obscenely wealthy. Even many of those most wealthy are against the Republican’s policies.
Tax cut fanatics of the last three decades have destroyed our infrastructure, our once great education system (our universities were once the envy of the world), our scientific research (which is what leads to new products and wealth), and just about everything else that made our country shine.
How sad it is what hate, fear and ignorance can do in such a short time.

I think it’s been there all along, but with the new technology it’s only becoming more visible, as ordinary people (through things like YouTube) gain access to the elites and see what they really think.
The things I’ve read suggest that his attitude isn’t unique at all.
I will grant that some rich people in the past – and a couple alive today, still are human beings (and care about the rest of humanity).

Dory, as a veteran, thank you for your service and best of luck in your future retirement. Actually, I know of only a few active duty or non-active service members who support Romney. And most of those just simply hate the president and cannot mount a very logical argument for why. Most military personnel and veterans I know realize that getting out of war is better, yet more difficult that getting in one. They praise the president for making the decision to get us out of the 2 wars in which many of may friends lost their lives. What I don’t understand is what has the president done that makes you say he has torn this country from under your feet?

As a Veteran, I can assure you that not all members of our fine military feel as Dory does. When Mr. Hayes retires he may discover, as many of us have, that Republicans often view Veteran’s benefits as a sort of social program much like welfare. At that point, Mr. Hayes may wake up. Republicans love the warrior, but not the retiree or disabled.

Thank you for the sacrifice you have made for your country. Unfortunately, your preferred candidate can’t seem to remember that you even exist. He doesn’t realize that among that 47% who he is certain won’t vote for him are military members whose pay is so low they not only don’t pay income taxes, they qualify for food stamps. Indeed, the Republicans are eager to freeze military pay and won’t do a damn thing to help disabled and/or unemployed veterans. They have fought increasing benefits for the military tooth and nail.
As for “tearing your country out from under you” I am quite puzzled about this. Is it about immigration? Do you realize that the only way we are going to have enough young people to support the boomer generation (of which you are one) is to increase LEGAL immigration? Is it about the fact that Obama won’t let Christians tell all the rest of us how we must believe and act?

Regarding those Voter ID laws, these are the laws that apply above all others because they are Amendments to the Constitution:
#14: …No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
#15: Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Equal protection of the laws means that all citizens are equal before the law, and that includes voting laws. The right of citizens to vote shall not be abridged by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude — that means that no state can make a law that de facto impacts a group on account of race. The completely unnecessary Voter ID laws have been put into place to prevent legitimate citizens from voting, and they have a disprortionate impact on people of color.
So when you say you oppose the effort to stop the Voter ID laws, you mean you oppose the Constitution of the United States, which you swore to uphold.
That does not compute.

I’m from a family of vets. My Grandfather was a commissioned officer U.S. Army at a time when the only black in the officer’s mess were servants and shoes. Both my parents served; I served; my Mothers baby brother gave his life for “our” country; others in my family served.
State’s Rights. We know all about state’s rights, not to mention immigration policy. Need I suggest that soldiers of color who are fighting and dying for “our” country are not foremost in Dory’s mind. He didn’t mention jobs, pay or even the often tragic plight of returning vets.
No, just his racist dog whistles.
So, while I appreciate the sentiments of some here in coddling this so and so, I don’t believe you appreciate to whom you express the sentiments.

I am part of Mr. Romney’s 53%.
I have worked hard all my life. And I pay taxes. Lots of taxes.
I have never received food stamps, but never begrudged helping those who needed them. I have never needed to use unemployment insurance, but never thought it “wrong” to use something that individuals pay into for just such emergencies. I have never used Medicare, but believe it is a good system I have paid for and that, with careful management, will be there when I need it. I have yet to take social security, but have paid into it my whole working life and expect and demand that it be there for me and for my children and grandchildren.
I am sick of Mr. Romney.
His vision of America is NOT mine.
And want him to go very far away very very soon.

I don’t usually comment on blogs, but I feel I have to give my two cents on this one. From all my research and observations I have come to a conclusion in regards to the current polarization of America. I have to say…I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to observe how neatly divided this nation is. It really brings to light all the religious fanatics, racists (yeah I said it!), ignorant, and just plain sheep-minded individuals. I remember a time when I “felt” like the Republican party had my back; that was when every scumbag, self-interested news organization pointed their cameras in the direction my rifle pointed. Ladies and gentlemen, we are dealing with a very dangerous group of people that will do just about anything to replace President Obama; for whatever the reason. My advice, don’t waste your time replying to the ignorance. The people we’re dealing with do not believe in intelligent, American progression. They are already helplessly convinced and driven by extreme ideologies. Don’t even get me started on Dale Mulkey, I’ll need another 2000 characters for this special guy. So sit back people, enjoy an episode of your favorite programming, and do all of us who have served and are currently serving a favor and take action at the voting booths. The people like Dory have either grown up with prejudice preached at the dinner table, or listens to Limbaugh, watches the propaganda arm of the republican party, fox news, and maybe a Glen Beck fan. Or possibly a Mormon or a extreme right wing Christian fundamentalist.
If he is any of those, except maybe a fox watcher, then he will never change.
I’m a Christian, but those extremists are not following Jesus. .
If you haven’t read a conservative website, you will be shocked at the creative imaginations for telling, and getting others to believe crazy things.
1. They think Occupy was formed by thugs of the leader of the free world.
2. They think that our president is going to take away their guns. This is nuts . Obama gave Washington DC their right to have guns for the 1st time.

Just wanted to say that I felt like Yaaa people do understand and I’m no the only one who can see through the propaganda put forth by FOX.

I feared for the USA when the GOP were pushing so many Voter ID laws, but I am reassured that the good ordinary people are fighting back & will give Romney a Resounding NO.
i am excited that November 6th will be a day of CELEBRATION when the Forces of Evil, GOP, find they lose so many votes.
The dread is the cash from Super-PACS will distort some elections but not as many as first feared. Many millions in the UK are rooting for Obama & many other Democrat candidates.
