Bill Maher: China Requires GMO Labeling, But America The Land of The Free Does Not
Bill Maher brought up a great point about GMO labeling. Even China requires GMO labeling, but the United States does not.
Here is the video:
Bill Maher was talking about how Americans are outraged by the horse meat scandal, but the majority of us appear not to care about what is really in our food, when he said, “Fifty other countries require GMO labeling including most of Europe, Japan, Australia, India, Saudi Arabia, China. That’s right, China. A country that puts Melamine, a chemical fire retardant, in their baby formula. Which sounds irresponsible, but come on, when was the last time you saw a Chinese baby catch on fire? But hey, let’s look at the silver lining. It’s actually a good thing that Americans don’t care what they put in their mouth, because in the future thanks to overpopulation, and over fishing, and global warming, and Chris Christie, we’re running out of the food we do like to eat.”
Maher’s message was, “If we don’t fix how we grow food, and stop turning the oceans into a carbon sink for coal, we’re going to have to learn how to eat all the few gnarly maggoty things that can survive mankind…So enjoy eating your chemically processed crap now America, because it won’t be long before lunch is dung beetles and Soylent Green. And when all that runs out, I’m afraid it’s Papa Johns.”
China is a country that has used lead paint in children’s toys and on Halloween costumes, and they have GMO labeling. The United States does not. The American Medical Association is advocating for premarket safety assessment for all genetically engineered foods, but processed for giants like Pepsi, Coke, Nestle, Monsanto, ConAgra, DuPont, Dole, Campbell’s Soup, and almost every brand name that you would recognize on supermarket shelves spend millions of dollars every year fighting GMO labeling. Why? Because, they don’t want you to know what you are eating.
People have a right to eat whatever they want, but they also have a right to the information needed in order to make an informed decision. I suspect many Americans would continue eating the way they already do even with GMO labeling, but corporate America can’t run the risk of having their marketplace corrupted by informed consumers.
So Americans will continue to be outraged by every food mislabeling scandal, while never putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. As long this country continues to subsidize processed food over fresh or organic crops, corporations will continue to put profits ahead of people, and Americans can never be totally sure about the possible dangers behind what they are eating.

The U.S. was the world leader when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties. Seeing us slide way back because of the influence of reactionary right wing “Christians” is terribly sad and has the rest of the world moving ahead and laughing at us. Although an Agnostic, I’ve never understood why the fundamentalists don’t see that God, if he indeed exists, wouldn’t be moving us through Science to improve our world.

Indeed, our ability to make this a better world would glorify any God worth his salt. Instead of taking us back to our religion ruling us morally, physically and through our thoughts, a true religion would want you to improve yourself the best way you can towards purity of mind and body.
But there are no true religions. You cannot have a true religion when you have so many religions in my opinion. A religion that doesn’t condemn you to hell if you don’t bow down to the CEO would be a good start to be in on their way to a true religion

By your hindu nick it amuses me you not knowing the answer to your question:
shiva
“there are no true religions. You cannot have a true religion when you have so many religions”
Actually yes. It is easy.
The oldest one.
The first one.
Jainism.
The first religion. And the only one were damaging or eating anything but a fruit from a tree or a bush, is a sin (even vegetables, or roots). Because fruits are the only real food.
Fruits are the food god offered to us with no work needed. Growing wild.
Until humans decided it was a better idea to reproduce themselves until it was not sustainable, and they began eating what was not food, and destroying to make space.
Thousands of years after that, there is a cancer rate of 44% and raising, that used to be at 3% around year 1900, only 100 years before.
Mercury on oceans, cadmium all over earth, asbestos, lead, and lots of other biocidal substances that were naturally deep below earth surface and humans thought it was a good idea to take up and spread around.
Any other religion its around for no more than 5 thousand years, and they have managed to destroy what Jainism preserved for hundred thousand years.

Homo sapiens – the only species stupid enough to continually and actively engineer its own extinction. Mother Nature will be so happy when the two-legged upright-walking cockroaches are gone from the face of the earth.

If GMOs should be labeled, why shouldn’t any intra-species cross bred food be as well?

Intra species cross-bred food? I don’t know of any that isn’t a GMO.

Amen Hey Floyd, was thinking of you the other day as I stated to read Paradigm shift for the 2000th time. Exceptional
My doctor has started a group for us people with diabetics I’m trying to eat nothing but natural foods, and as much of it is we can grow ourselves if spring ever comes.
People who constantly stuff fast food and their kids and in themselves have to have a Charles Bronson death wish

The video was just absolutely epic.
I can’t believe that anyone would turn down a bill that says we should label the GM owes that we eat. But lets face it we are living in a time when proposition 37 was probably approved and Monsanto decided that it should be turned down.
I would advise everyone who has 6 feet of extra ground on their property to start buying as many seasons you can buy and put them in airtight containers and grow your own.

Dear Human Overpop…
You left out the “real thing” about Jainism, which in MHO does not make it “religion” but a reality based lifestyle (I’m not sure there is an actual mythos that stems from the Jain–where is the myth/purpose spelled out as a reason for eating only “fruit”?).
Jainism requires every single thing a human utters as “truth” because everything (word and deed) is “recorded” in the universe. It is a very difficult path on which to live and most humans gave it up, traded it in to worship superstition, fear, guilt, control, etc.. In turn, they then made “sins” which they are “forgiven” if they utter the magic words/deeds/pay penance, etc…magic words have nothing to do with “truth” and you can’t take back what you did in the past–IMHO it is reasonable to say that religion has little to do with “truth”, but more to do with myth. The Jain is all about the truth.

We live in a country in which a sizeable portion of the population is against regulations, based on the false premise that they are anti- free enterprise and regardless of the fact that regulations result in accountability as well as long-term health benefits. That’s the kind of irresponsible mindset behind the fact that GMO labeling is not required in this country.

Even worse, the big corps only go against regulations if those rules make them pay extra for anything. Otherwise, they use certain regulations as a shield if they can gain more money from them and enforce their monopoly.

GMO does not do anything for you. Less nutrients etc. Koch brothers are wanting to control this. control the seeds. running farmers out of family businesses. Look up MOnsanto and side titles. They are going to kill us. You wonder why there are so many cancers? We were not born to eat all these chemicals. They food we get off the shelves are loaded with this crap. Go organic as much as you can, before they run those farmers out of business. Watch Farmaghettan on Netflix. Here are a few others. Forks over Knives, Burzynski, Gerson Miracle, Sick, Fat and nearly Dead.
As for us in free America; really, not really.

I’m surprised there has been no mention of President Obama campaigning in 2007 and 2008 that he would label GMOs, after which he promptly appointed former Monsanto head Michael Taylor to Senior Advisor to the FDA Commissioner. Then in January 2010 Pres. Obama created a FDA position just for Mr. Taylor, Deputy Commissioner for Foods.

Pisses me off. Just as much as California turning down a bill that would have forced GMO labeling.

GMO labeling was defeated in California. Monsanto was the standard bearer. Was there vote manipulation. back door deals, or brain washing. I don’t understand why this PROTECTION was defeated.Any Californians tuned into this site who can explain. Lack of public interest in their health?
