Bill Maher: Democrats Need Their Own Psychos To Take Out The Tea Party
On his HBO program Real Time, Bill Maher advocated for the creation of a psycho left to take out the psycho right.
Here is the video:
Maher said,
The reason John Boehner could brag that he got 98% of what he demanded was he had an ace card in the sixty odd tea partiers in his caucus. I don’t say sixty odd because I’m not sure of how many there are. There are sixty and they’re odd, and Boehner could point them and say look, these guys don’t give a f**k. They don’t want compromise and solutions. The only response they’re going for is oh s**t, how’d Skeeter get a gun?
….
The only that liberals can pull the debate back from the far right is for liberals to elect their own slate of 60 unstable loony tune mad as a hatter crazy motherfuckers, so please liberals start trolling Whole Foods parking lots, nude beaches, erotic cake stores, the MSNBC commissary. Anywhere where you might find angry left wing lunatics to create a party within a party, as the tea party is a party within the Republicans, and to show that we will not back down in a crazy off against anybody, the party within a party will be called the Donner Party.
That’s right, we will literally eat each other before we give an inch, and this is our leader, Face Ripper Monkey… And don’t tell me that there already is such an entity on the left, that it’s the ACLU, Greenpeace and MoveOn.org. Oh please, those are educated people lawyers and scientists. We need loudmouths and bad dressers who can match the tea people maniac for maniac, and say to them you think you can be pea brained, single minded, and purple with rage?
Well the Donner Party is a dog that can bark at a pine cone for nine days and not get tired. You say no new taxes on the rich. We say tax the rich at 100%. You call for a constitutional amendment banning abortion. We call for a federally funded partial birth abortions at the drive thru at McDonalds. You want Reagan on the fifty dollar bill. We insist on Jeanine Garfalo, because apparently crazy is the new sensible and will not lose the war of bad ideas.
So here’s what else we want. Guns, still legal but no new guns may be produced. Therefor to get one you have to literally pry it from another guy’s cold dead hands. Also not only must gay history be taught in schools, but also gay math with word problems like if a park ranger inspects the restrooms every four hours and it takes Glenn twelve minutes to get a stranger off, how many strangers can Glenn service between inspections?
In any budget stalemate the Donner Party will insist on a rider stipulating that Jesus is just a guy, and if you so much as thank him for scoring a touchdown the state will take your children and you must perform two hundred hours of community theater. And the other bill that I am afraid the Donner Party must insist on is the We Want Everything They Have Act of 2011, which guarantees all Americans what Europeans get like free health care and six weeks of paid vacation.
What Maher was doing was both expressing his frustration with Democrats, and mocking the extremism of the right. He wasn’t really advocating for left wing extremism but he was highlighting the value of and the political cover that can be provided by a well-placed bloc of people who just don’t care about outcomes. Obama could have been moved to more leftward position if the Senate Democrats would not have rolled over and played dead as soon as the clock starting ticking on the prospect of a default.
That’s what the people who are only blaming Obama don’t get. Senate Democrats are the problem. They are too conservative. While she was Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi passed 420 bills that got zero action in the Senate. Big progressive legislation, like a health care reform bill with a public option died in the Senate. If Democrats want Obama to move to the left and he won’t move on his own, they need to elect a congress that will move him.
In all seriousness what our government needs most is not to add more extremists, but to get the current extremists out. A system that was barely functional before the tea party arrived in the House is now shattered. The good news is that our current ills can be easily cured in 2012. The worst thing that would could do to our country would be to turn congress into a holy war of ideology between the left and right. The extremism would become institutionalized, and we would all be screwed.
The left already has an ideologically driven tea party clone, but the angry firebagging left has been so unsuccessful and irrelevant that Maher doesn’t seem to even know that they exist. The answer isn’t more extremism. It is send the crazy people back home where they belong.
This country doesn’t need a psycho left to match the psycho right. How about instead, we get rid of all the elected psychos and restore some sanity back to our government?

I cannot remember the black fellows name, but he is absolutely brilliant. I would die to know a tenth of what he knows about the universe.
As usual Maher nails it. Crazies against crazies. Obama should have went for revenues with no cuts.
Boehner did not get 98% of what he wanted with the final agreement. But he has it now.

same exact thought here !!!…there is a right wing conspiracy among business and right wing interests to do everything in their power to bring down this president … The S & P as has been pointed out by Krugman and Reich (and others) has absolutely no credibility

No, try reading and listening to the vid again, then understand I said crazies against crazies. Then it was my opinion Obama should have went for revenues without cuts.

The problem here is that the left doesn’t want to fight the tea party. They are too busy pointing their keyboard pitchforks at the President and the Democrats. They are the absolute least of your problems and I don’t what the hell else has to happen before it gets in their freaking heads. Let Obama stay above the fray. Biden can do a little of the loose talk. Congressional Dems can go after Congressional Repubs and the liberal activists can go after the tea party dregs.

But HOW do we get the loonies and the Republicans out when half the country is as crazy as they are? You can’t reason with people who drank the Kool Aid Fox has been handing out. Even the Murdoch scandal hasn’t damaged Fox’s Teflon reputation. And critical thinking skills–even Republicans we know are smart people have come to lose all grasp of logic. The left should be enraged, and we are. But if you’ve busted butt to vote in every election, canvass, blog, go to town hall meetings, write your representatives, and beg your Fox News worshipping relatives to listen to logic, what’s the next step?

Love the video link-Maher is great! Maybe his ideas aren’t that far out–sometimes it takes a little crazy to deal with crazy. Democrats have bent over backwards to be bipartisan, negotiate and compromise to no avail. We lose. Reasonable does not work with unreasonable people. Maybe we just need to say NO! NO more tax cuts or corporate welfare. NO cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. And we will only negotiate when the best interest of the entire country is the agenda of both parties.

The words of Yeats great poem, “the Second Coming” hold so true today: “the worst are full of a passionate intensity, and the best have lost all conviction.” (Or words to that effect, writing from memory.) We on the Left just aren’t as full of that “passionate intensity” as the nutjob lunatics on the Right.

The problem is literacy, those who can read and are not in the pay of large corporations are usually much less inclined to follow the lying, disingenuous, ophidian slime that populates not only the republican but to an equal extent the democratic leadership i.e. Obama!

While the right wing nut jobs on Digg, other social media sites, and on the air are desperate to try to make a false equivalence between how far some folks are on the left to how extreme spokesman on the right are, it simply is not true. About the furthest to the left would probably be Michael Moore, and he’s about as far off center as Michael Bloomberg.
If we really had a hard left that was getting media airtime, you would hear about nationalizing the mining industry like Chile wants to do following the trapped miner fiasco, having the top marginal tax rate being 100% above $10 million/year, cutting the TOTAL military budget to $40 billion per year, FULL socialization of the health care system (not just Single Payer, but where every medical professional works directly for the Dept. of Health and every hospital is government owned), 90% inheritance taxes on estates valued at over $800,000, mandatory unionization for employees of every non-management sector, etc. I might be exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea.

When the political process is essentially divided into two groups, one with a commitment to compromise, progress, and a “big tent” to house all points of view, and another comprised of violent, radical fanatics who would destroy the nation utterly rather than concede an inch of ideological ground, the former group is at a serious disadvantage.
The Democrats are negotiating with terrorists, seeking a political dialogue with ignorant, greedy, superstitious reactionaries. I cringed when Nancy Pelosi admonished the Republicans that they would “look like obstructionists.” These are the people who call the President “tar baby” and “boy!” How they look to America is not a serious concern.
While “psychos” may be overstating it, America needs a Democratic party willing to play dirty and play hard, fight fire with fire. What do you do with a rabid dog? The same thing to do with terrorists.

Absolutely hilarious and totally true, funny enough some dude published a website on thedonnerparty.us exactly addressing what Maher said here.
