The Blame Goes Beyond Obama For Debt Ceiling Compromise
By: RmuseAug. 1st, 2011more from Rmuse
There is always a tendency to blame the person at the top for every problem in an organization whether it is the corporate world or a government agency. It is natural for human beings to find fault with a single person because they have one target instead of many; especially when the “many” represent members of your own fraternity. The debt ceiling crisis and proposed deal between Democrats, Republicans, and the White House is a perfect example where the professional left and many liberal individuals are busy hurling accusations and insults at President Obama for averting a catastrophic default on America’s debt.
Before any critic starts in, the proposed spending cuts and debt ceiling increase is not good and will not solve the problem of increased revenue. Now that is out of the way, the appropriate question is; just what was President Obama supposed to do? Although the deal is less than ideal, it averts a disaster of epic proportions that would cripple this nation’s economy to the point that America may well have never recovered. However, that is not really the issue, but since the nay-sayers are throwing words like sellout and President Obama caves again, it is worth a brief perusal of exactly who is at fault.
There seems to be a twisted notion of the powers many on the left think the president has and to be honest, it reeks of teabagger logic. The Constitution is very specific in describing the nature of our government and it says in Article I, Section 7, clause 1 that “all bills relating to revenue, generally tax bills, must originate in the House of Representatives.” Now that may seem unfair, unreasonable, and astonishing to many on the far left, but the Constitution’s framers decided that was how the government was going to operate well over 200 years ago. It is not a Republican plot and definitely not ideal in the current political landscape, but it is the law of the land and like it or not, it is all there is.
For any American, either on the left or the right, to lay blame for the deal on the president alone is misplaced and frankly; childish. In 2009 there was a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, and it took a Herculean effort for President Obama to get support for health care reform. It was expected he would face opposition from Republicans, but the near deal-breakers were members of his own party and it took arm twisting and cajoling to get the votes to pass the law. In fact, from the minute President Obama took office it seemed there were always a couple of conservative Democrats standing in the way of true change and it was enough to give Republicans veto power in the form of filibusters and obstructionist tactics. But the blame does not lie solely with Congressional Democrats because they acted according to their constituencies and the special interest groups whose sometimes unreasonable expectations derailed a unified front from Democrats. The public option is one example where special interest groups nearly upset the administration’s efforts at passing health care reform.
There were groups that put pressure on a few Democratic legislators to withhold support for the health law unless a public option was included in the deal. If a public option were included from the start of the health care reform debate, a couple of conservative Democrats would have withheld support and the bill would have never left committee. There was not any way for the president to have the entire Democratic caucus’s support whether he included a public option or did not include it. If he did include it, conservative Democrats and the health insurance industry would have withheld support and there would be no health law. The resulting Affordable Health Act may not be the ideal, but once fully implemented, it will provide affordable health insurance for 30-40 million Americans who are without any healthcare coverage. So would it have been better for the bill to die in committee or not get passed at all? For the 30-40 million Americans who will final have health insurance coverage, there was no option but the one that was eventually signed into law.
This column is not long enough and the author does not have the patience to enumerate every remarkable achievement that President Obama has reached through political wrangling within his own party, not to mention obstructionist Republicans. The president has never had the overwhelming support of his party and there is plenty of blame to go around, but it is time to call the far-left crybabies to task for their part in where we are now. From the health care debate to present day, there has been a steady chorus of detractors and malcontents who have been instrumental in diluting the president’s power. If the ideologues on the left had given Congressional Democrats unwavering support for President Obama’s agenda from the start, the country may not be in the situation we find ourselves today.
During the lead up to the 2010 midterm elections, there was an incessant drone of calls to withhold support for all Democratic candidates and there were plenty of faux-left pundits who actually told their followers to stay home and not vote at all. Good idea morons. Every lost Democratic vote made it easier for teabaggers and Republicans to win their elections and since the 112th Congress has been in session, all Americans are paying for whiny liberals who were punishing President Obama for not waving his magic scepter and granting their fantasies. It did not matter if it was anything the president had the Constitutional authority to do or not, he has taken the blame for Congress’s actions at every turn. Look, just because President Obama didn’t give all lefties a unicorn and cotton-candy for life doesn’t mean he is caving or selling out. Now, the president is catching hell for not raising the debt ceiling on his own even though he did not have that authority. If a deal were not reached he could invoke the 14th Amendment, but it appears a deal was reached so the necessity for bringing the 14th into play is gone.
The only silver lining to this less-than-ideal agreement is that across America, Republicans and Independents alike are livid with Republicans and teabaggers. The president had no options and most Americans understand that Republicans were holding America’s economic stability hostage to protect the wealthy. In poll after poll, Americans overwhelmingly supported raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations and they know the president was bringing those tax increases to the table and Republicans refused to follow the will of the people. Earlier in the year, polling also showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans wanted the Congress and White House to compromise to move the economy forward and the president has been at the forefront of those efforts. The American people know exactly who has not compromised and not followed their wishes and they will punish the GOP and teabaggers at the ballot box in 2012. Even staunch conservative pundits have decried the Republican’s lack of compromise. Americans will not forget which party is responsible for the mess, and pragmatic Americans will not forget the far-left’s unwavering support for Republicans and teabaggers.

Maybe this’ll talk a few #emoprogs off their ledges. I suggest having a little more patience, that’s all. And more faith in the President. He did what he had to do and it won’t always be pretty.

the senior citizens of this country have to remember that the tea bags through them underneath the bus and not only drove over them, but backed over them several times. If they can catch on to that fact that they have some severe problems besides being old.
Every working American Democrat or Republican, would have lost if the Ryan plan went through. Every person on Social Security would’ve lost even though they had worked their entire life to get that Social Security. While children are not cognizant of what’s going on they would have lost the help and education to get them out of their childhood. And they still will to a degree.
If Americans are not cognizant of those facts which are just a small microcosm of what the Republicans want to do to America then there is a disconnect with the Democrats ability to communicate. We certainly cannot rely on the media for anything, it’s time for the Democrats to speak up about the things that they have accomplished and what they prevented from being accomplished

You can make excuses all day long. Revenues is not the issue it is submission to terrorism. The President has failed to lead the discussion. It is not a comprimise when all the gain is on the other side. As far as an agreement negating the 14th Amendment without the Presidents submission there would be no “agreement” having submitted to terrorism once, the question becomes what will be the next terrorist act he will submitt to. I am not on the far left and had great hopes but Obama has failed and continues to fail to lead. Perhaps the fact that I am an old man gives Me a differant perspective. I will not accept, can not accept a President submitting to terrorism in any form.

so basically you are in approval of default.
I think you should read the agreement and watch several different analyst’s discussing who won and who lost. the Democrats “kinda” lost the first round, but are assured that the Bush tax cuts will expire in 2012 increasing revenues.
Social Security and Medicaid were exempted from cuts. If Obama had submitted to the Republicans plans, both would be gone. We are getting large cuts in defense spending which will cut back on our ability to cause war in every part of the world. That’s a savings.

If you can offer just one Constitutional option President Obama has to lead by monarchy, I will listen to your criticism. Democrats have failed to support the president leaving him no Constitutionally correct options to lead. The option to send us into default and depression was not an option. Now we know how teabaggers felt when Dems legally passed healthcare reform. Really pissed off? Then start being productive and get people to vote for Dems who WILL support President Obama’s agenda instead of bitching about his failure to rule by edict.

Excellent article. Here is another outlining exactly what is in this agreement:
www.thepeoplesview.net/20...
While “firebaggers” think their hair is on fire and the sky is falling, please step back a moment read some good analysis of what ACTUALLY happened, please.
I still maintain that compromise is a good thing, but that being said, it’s clear the Republicans and the Tea Party held this country hostage and certainly they appear to have gotten more out of this deal than the left wing of the Democratic party – on the surface.
At the end of the day the president did the right thing (namely, acting as a sensible adult and considering what’s best for the country). As President his ultimate responsibility was to do that and while some of his base may feel he didn’t fight hard enough for their causes, he’s shown he put the country first in a situation like this against intransigent opponents.
I’m not thrilled about this outcome, but it’s not as bad as the professional Left is screaming about (again, please read thepeoplesview.net analysis above.
I sincerely hope that public anger at the hostage takers is swift and decisive in the next election.

Politics is the art of compromise in a democracy– otherwise, what you have IS a monarchy. I thought you’d rejected that way back in the 1770′s. Now you want your President to act like a King?

The line is not to rip the President apart, but to highlight what he has done. Hope I did not offend you…I realize that he must give and take in the world of politics.
The Civil Rights Act was a compromise, also the Voting Rights Act, and the EPA.
We live in a win-win world. Our politics in this country are polarized; I wish we can go back to the good old days.
Again, my apologies.

I am one of those “crybabies” on the left. I voted for president spineless in the primary & general election – I will not be fooled again. Lets look at the facts shall we? It was Obama who supported a public option & then did NOTHING to bring it about. As a side note what ever happened to his promise to allow cheaper imported drugs from Canada? That went down the memory as soon as he took the oath. Guess the “crybebies” forced him to give that up. President clueless NEVER threatened to use the 14th Amendment or any alternative. To say he never used it because a deal was struck is idiotic. A week ago he was blustering about shared sacrifice & how the rich must pay their fair share. What happened? That is something we “crybabies” support. Please tell me what the left wing of the Democratic party did to make him give that up? Don’t make the promise if you have no intention of fighting for it. Thats Barry. In a few months the Obama honey jar will be re-opened & all the sweet words & promises will be flowing again. Count me out. I have had it with this stooge. Let me know how the next round of talks go. I dare say the white flag will be flying over the White House as long as he is there & people like you will still be making excuses for him.

I am tired of GOPbaggers claiming they voted for President Obama and are disappointed. We all know this is a lie because if you had voted for President Obama you would know that 90% of his campaign promises were fulfilled in the first two years BEFORE the GOPbaggers took the house. As a woman, I would have been satisfied with just his initial piece of legislation, the Lily Leadbetter Fair Pay Act. Are there troglodytes out there who actually believe women don’t deserve equal pay for equal work? To them I say that the majority of families living in poverty are headed by a woman who was left in the lurch by a MAN and if these children are to be brought up with enough food not to be going hungry on a daily basis this law was LONG overdue.
Having healthcare options for all your citizens is not a little thing. When the President took office, health insurance represented 1/6 of our ENTIRE GDP. Supported by the GOP the Health Insurance Oligopoly paid their CEOs obscene 25 million per year salaries while continually raising rates to the point where America’s workers were paying more for their health insurance than they were for their mortgages. Then when they needed some of their protection money to pay for medical care, the insurers had a whole department to find ways to deny care. They do this for an operating cost of 32% of your premium, when in Canada this administration cost is 1% and far from costing 1/6 of GDP, their cost is less than half. Now that we have a cheaper gov’t option, the health insurance companies will have to compete, something they have done NEVER! And I don’t really care if how they accomplish this competition is by making some CEO tighten his belt and take a mere 6 million instead of 25 million.
For the entire time Bush was president he allowed the infrastructure in the US to crumble. When I came home from vacation it was to 75 miles of freshly resurfaced freeways, smooth as glass. When I left the roads were riddled with sink sized potholes.
All President Obama’s actions have been to protect and uplift the middle class which was almost non-existent by the time Bush finished looting the treasury and leaving American workers with the bill. The whining of GOPbaggers about Obama’s perceived “weakness” is just camouflage for the fact they only care about pleasing 400 billionaires and nothing for the 300,000,000 they were sworn to serve. Well in 2012, which is coming like a steamroller, we will teach the GOP a little lesson about percentages. GOP “welfare” for the richest will end and America’s wealthiest will start paying their fair share of this debacle. We we’ll vote the GOP out because we will remember who they served, themselves.

“When the President took office, health insurance represented 1/6 of our ENTIRE GDP.”
Well, that’s not true. Healthcare spending overall represented about 1/6 of the GDP — in other words, the same as now. However, costs are continuing to rise, with insurance costs rising faster than either wages or inflation, and HHS projects that by 2017 healthcare spending will be more like a 1/5 of the GDP.
“Now that we have a cheaper gov’t option, the health insurance companies will have to compete, something they have done NEVER!”
Where on earth did you get the idea that we now have a cheaper government option?

Dear Crybaby on the Left:
You still assume the President of the United States can rule by edict. I don’t want to live in your fairy-tale land. Congress passes laws. I learned that in the eighth grade. Yes the president stated his desires, but when the Dems had majorities in both houses, they did not support the President. So you go ahead and vote Republican, or withhold your vote altogether so we can have a repeat of 2010. However, while you are crying that President Obama did not give you your pony and lollipops for life, we will be encouraging the voters to give us back the House. Just remember that while you are working for Michele Bachmann’s campaign, your crying will not convince her to decry the Theocracy the neo-conservatives intend to install. I have a box of tissues for you. I had saved them for John Boehner’s next cry-fest, but since you are a “Lefty,” I’ll be happy to give them to you.

So exactly what did you want? Default? I guess the many students who will be getting their full Pell Grants this fall could have been sacrificial lambs for your pettiness…or maybe you’ve been watching one to many episodes of the West Wing and thinks that’s how it works for real. In all your “outrage” you didn’t (because you can’t) explain how to get to a majority of votes in the House and the Senate to get the tax increases on the top 2% wage earners. You’re just whining like a toddler but not rationalizing like an adult should. You’re repeating frustrati talking points and its really pathetic.
And don’t think for a minute that anyone is fooled by your pitiful idiotic “use the 14th amendment” option crap, which if the Prez had fallen for that trap (thank GOD he’s smarter than the likes of you)right now we’d be seeing the likes of you hollering for impeachment right along with the teahadists.

This doesn’t bode well for the Republicans or the Teabaggers, and gives the President something to campaign on in 2012 (deficit reduction, which is all the GOP has besides their “we are strong on terror” meme which is now also dead). Yet I am beyond livid that the Democrats and the country was held hostage by these people and I don’t have hopes that this will ever change. This is not the way this government was set up, to be ruled by the minority, but they simply will not allow the Dems to govern when the people vote them in. Pretty soon people will give up on the Dems if they haven’t already and just succumb to the corporatists out of fatigue and disappointment. I am not pleased at all and I feel very let down, even though I understand the mechanism, that the Dems would be so afraid of global economic failure on “their” watch that they would cave so hard. Revenues in dec of 2012 does nothing for us.
I am contacting my Democratic reps and telling them that this does NOTHING for the people. What can they do about it? They’re held hostage by the only party ruling this country by obstruction and even unlawful behavior. It’s a travesty that anyone would vote for a Republican these days. Vote Republican, get your country hijacked for the corporations. Yes, even just one Republican apparently can destroy the country. They don’t give a crap what the people need or the country. They just wanted to see the economy fail like it did under Bush so they could claim both sides do it.
It’s very close to legislative sedition in my mind. US is set up to be bi-partisan. That’s not what we’re getting.

Thank you. I would add that Congress was upset about the deal the President negotated on the 2011 budget, but he would not have had to negotiate a 2011 budget at all if the Democratic Congress had done its job and passed a budget. They were afraid to because of the impending election. So after Republicans took over, they expected Obama, who was in a weakened position after the election, to do something they refused to do. Same is true for the Bush tax cuts. Remember, he asked Congress to deal with them before the election, but they refused. The
Democratic Party’s failure to speak with one voice and support the President is partly responsible for the positon we find ourselves in

Chrystia Freedland (Thomson Reuters digital editor) was on Reliable Sources this weekend and nailed the problem with the mainstream media.
===============================
KURTZ: But just briefly, why has mainstream journalism not portrayed this as a crisis largely created by one party, and instead has developed the narrative that two sides are just a bunch of clowns?
FREELAND: Because I think mainstream journalism is averse to making judgments. And I also think that mainstream journalists are particularly scared of being labeled as liberal. We all want to be sort of seen as objective, and I think sometimes there’s a little of bending over backwards to be seen as objective by the right, because that’s where a lot of the criticism comes form.
KURTZ: I think you’ve hit on an excellent point, which is why we have you on.
================================
The entire interview is worth watching. You certainly won’t agree with everything she says, but this was a very good interview. It was refreshing to hear such valid criticism of the mainstream media said out loud. Bottom line, the “facts have a liberal bias” problem is alive and well.

“Facts have a liberal bias”- I like that.
The very news sources the Republicans tried to silence – NPR and PBS, are the most accurate (and still get things wrong); yet they’re considered to be very liberal (and rather inaccurate) by the general public. Look to the reporting on the Jena 6 situation… the more conservative the outlet, the more inaccurate (if not downright deceptive and flat-out racist) the so-called information was. I can say this because this was a research project I conducted, analyzing the reporting on the situation and comparing it to official testimony and documentation.
Even NPR got some of the reporting wrong, btw – and in such a way that made it a bit more conservative than the reality.
The most accurate source of reporting I found were websites dedicated to defending and supporting the Jena Six. They were derided as being communist and “racist against white people”… but they were the most accurate when compared with the official documents and sworn statements.
Faux News and the Washington Times… I ended up putting those two in their own category, because of the flat-out lying and racism spewed by them. Compared to the valid sources I had, they were deliberately deceiving people, telling them just the opposite of what actually happened in some instances, and because of the racist and bigoted stereotypes they strongly promoted.
I don’t much like the compromise, but I’m glad it happened. I believe that if it hadn’t happened, I would end up personally experiencing the fallout, along with others in my family (and I’m tired of paying the price for things other people do). I would, after all, like to find a job… and something I’m working on right now would probably fall through if the government went into default.

Well I guess I’ll respond. I see a lot of name calling, but no answerrs to my questions. Cheaper drugs from Canada? An Obama campaign “promise”. What did we crybabies do to foul that up? Patty, could you direct me to the day on which Obama shut down Guantanomo Bay? GUESS I didn’t read the paper that day. I’m not the one who advocated using the 14th Amendment, just responding to the article. As far as getting votes to tax the top 2%, all obama had to do was let the Bush tax cuts expire. Oh thats right, he caved on that. Wasn’t that the news conference when Marc Ambinder asked him about getting a debt ceiling done then [last Decenber] & he replied that he trusted Boehner. Great insight. As a final thought after a Democrat won the special House election this past spring in New Yorks 26th districy, running against the Ryan Medicare plan, what does Obama do in debt negotiations? He VOLUNTARILY puts cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid on the table. Is the crybaby left responsible for that? If a person runs as a Democrat their number one job is to protect those programs. Explain how the left is responsible for that? He throws the best campaign issue Dems HAD to run on next year out the window. Beautiful & you people are going to blame the left for this mess? Looking forwdrd to some ANSWERS.

think you missed the paper quite a few days. No expiration of Bush tax cuts as a compromise to get unemployment benefits extended. POTUS tried to close GITMO but was stopped by Congress. He even had to compromise more than desired on the Affordable Health Care plan, but he did get it passed. And read the text of today’s plan–Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Veteran’s benefits and aid to programs for the poor are exempt from the cuts. all I’ve heard the President say is he wants to make sure that Medicare and Social Security remain sustainable for future generations.

another article defending the indefensible & calling those that disagree with obama “childish & crybabies”. read obama’s silly book “the audacity of hope” rmuse, & you’ll find obama’s hero to be ronald reagan. reagan more than any other person is responsible for the destruction of the middle class & the poor. look at obama’s cabinet led by losers summers & geithner. somehow you forgot to mention that the federal reserve provided secret loans to foreign & american banks of $16.1 trillion. you also forgot to mention unemployment; when you include long term people that cannot find any work, the rate is 23%. jobs offshored to slave labor countries will never come back. so the crisis is unbelievably bad. yet obama ignores the poverty here in america, continues the idiotic wars in iraq, afghanistan & pakistan & starts new wars in somalia, libya, & yemen. the idiotic war in libya is basically because the CIA doesn’t like china investing in libya. it isn’t so much the left hates obama, we are just extremely alarmed at what’s going on domestically & internationally. we don’t see any difference in the democrats & the republicans. look at the latest poll, obama has an approval rating of 45%, with disapproval at over 49%. guess the left aren’t the only people disinchanted with barack.
