Bryan Fischer Condemns Interfaith Prayer and Counterfeit Gods
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
I thought I’d haul out my old “friend” Bryan Fischer for ridicule today. It has been awhile. And every now and then Fischer says something so truly atrocious that I have just have to give him a metaphorical slap-down. Nobody deserves it more. The Northeast may be being buried by snow, but the whole world is being buried by Fischer’s masturbatory excretions.
Speaking as a Heathen for a moment, Fischer is what we call a nithing. No other single word describes him better. If you wonder what a nithing is, a nithing (ON niðingr) is a villain, scoundrel, coward, vile wretch. A nithing could also be a truce-breaker or a traitor. A niðing deed (niðingsverk) is an ill deed, or villainy. A person guilty of this sort of behavior was held in contempt and could be outlawed, or even killed.
Here’s the deal: Right Wing Watch reports that, “A pastor from a conservative Lutheran church in Connecticut has been reprimanded by his synod for participating in the interfaith memorial service following the Sandy Hook massacre that featured President Obama because his participation gave the impression that worship among various faiths was acceptable.”
Oh dear. Remember when they used to (still do) say this about mixing skin colors? Yeah….well, anyway, Bigoted Bryan was sporting wood on the synod’s behalf because Christians should not be “yoked with unbelievers” or be forced to attend “prayers and worship to counterfeit gods.” It’s perfectly alright, on the other hand, to force non-Christians to worship the Christian God.
Watch what the Bigot King has to say, courtesy of Right Wing Watch:
Counterfeit gods, he says! How about counterfeit humanity? Has Fischer forgotten that this is 21st century America and not Bronze Age Israel? The very idea of America is that we are all equal before the law, including religions; that however different we might be individually, we are all in this together.
Let me say, on Fischer’s behalf, that he is being true to a long Christian tradition of believing that even having “tolerate the continued existence of pagans and heretics” was a form of persecution (Michael Gaddis, There is No Crime for Those Who Have Christ, 2006). Fischer is not just pulling these ideas out of his ass, even if they smell that way. No, this is a crap sandwich of ancient standing.
But this is the 21st century. He is not to be forgiven for refusing to update his thinking.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary (Shorter OED, 3rd ed, 1959) the meaning of nithing is “A vile coward; an abject wretch; a villain of the lowest type”. Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) offers this definition “A coward; a dastard; — a term of utmost opprobrium.” My slightly more recent Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary (2nd ed. 1979), a nithing is a ciked man, “a coward, a dastard; a poltroon.” A poltroon, of course, is a coward.
All or any of these terms are appropriate when talking about Bryan Fischer. This is one director of issues analysis who has issues. And really, nobody better represents the goals and aspirations of the American Thuggery…er, um, I mean, “Family” Association.
The word nið could be applied to those who failed to provide hospitality; it is also used in the Icelandic sagas to describe libel, such as in a libelous verse written about another. Such an act could have dire consequences, as in the fate of the hapless Galti:
Brand…slew Galti the son of Ottar at the Hunavatn’s Thing on account of a libelous rhyme by Hallfled. (Landnamabók (3: IV)
In our culture, you can’t simply cut, or gun someone down for saying something, unless you are a Republican and/or a member of the NRA (and then you blame it on welfare mothers). You are left to eviscerate them metaphorically.
Just let me point out here that though Bryan Fischer claims President Obama “is filled with arrogance, he is filled with pride, he is filled with hubris” and believes that he knows better than God, which is “the height of arrogance, it is the height of conceit, it is the height of pride,” it is not President Obama who has convinced himself he is enacting not his own will, but God’s.
No, that man would be Bryan Fischer.
The pastor in question, Rev. Rob Morris, meanwhile, has apologized - or rather equivocated - saying by way of an open letter:
“I believed my participation to be, not an act of joint worship, but an act of community chaplaincy.”
“To those who believe that I have endorsed false teaching, I assure you that was not my intent, and I give you my unreserved apologies.”
Do not worry that I am going to break into verse to diminish Bryan Fischer’s reputation. I think Bryan Fischer has handled that well enough on his own. His niðingsverk speaks for itself. I’ll just keep putting it in context.

You have to wonder what happened to people like Bryan Fischer in childhood. Was he abused or neglected? Is that why he is so hateful now? Why spend so much time and energy being so hateful to other people – most of whom you don’t even know! Whatever happened to him it was not what I would call normal.

People like Bryan Fischer is what happened to people like Bryan Fischer as a child. Intolerance is a learned behavior.

That’s right UncaJoe…
It’s not about the belief, it’s all about the behavior
Or, say it the other way; it’s all about the behavior, not the belief…
Anyway you say it, belief systems, like Fishers, are learned behaviors. None of these systems are, in no way, sent from some sky-god or one special person who tells you how to behave.
Civilizations, societies, tribes, etc. have all form their own rules or laws. Everything from a custom to social etiquette…all are man-made in order to stop bad behaviors from destroying others.

how unfortunate is it that the Muslims worship the same God that Christians do. Of course I don’t consider Bryan Fisher a Christian under any definition of the word.
this is the type of person that wants war. you must worship the one true living God. And if you don’t then you must be admonished and forced to publicly state the fact that you do not recognize any other religion. Which is really ridiculous because not everyone in America is a Christian. Thank goodness
There are three major religions, out of all of them the Hindus accept the other religions as having value. it would be rare indeed to find a Hindu saying never pray with a Christian.
it’s not a stretch to say in my mind that this person probably feels the same about black, brown and yellow people as well.

The Baptists and evangelicals did that here and very publicly about how to distribute food from an interfaith food bank, They refused to participate if Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, and anyone not evangelical were part of discussing how to help the poor. Bragged about it, took their food and went home. Sick.

Yeah, seems to be this running attitude lately in so called Christian churches–mostly evangelical by nature. Funny how they go on and on about how to serve God, but apparently forgot what Jesus taught. Guess that part of the Bible where Jesus said those things doesn’t jive with their worldview. Consequently that does NOT make them Christian at all. Funny that.

People such as this is the reason many people are abandoning religion, not because they no longer believe in god but because they see religion as hypocritical nonesense filled with hateful rhetoric and promoting division in the name of their warped notion of a higher power.

Yes, clearly a minister’s job is not to *minister* to his community during a crisis, but to hate all the same people his bosses or Bryan J. Fischer hates. Fischer’s Gods are homophobia and hatred, not Jesus.

This self-righteous belief that no other religion is valid is one of the reasons that some folks turn away from organized religion. I have to wonder if folks like Bryan Fischer practice the ignorant tactic of exclusion because they are actually threatened by people of other faiths. It’s another example of Americans who are unable and unwilling to accept the fact that this country is not only increasingly multi-racial but is also a multi-faith one. Actually, these things have always been true of the USA, but the degree has greatly increased over time.

This country has always been multi-faith. Many of the early settlers came to America to flee various religious wars. Many were minority faiths, not accepted by the mainstream. Many were not considered Christian by some of the others. Oddly enough, that included the Catholics of Maryland. Jews were also part of the religious refugees.

It makes me proud to be a pagan, though I’m not. Or a heretic, which I’m not, either. How about anything but a Christian? Yep. That works.

Having been unfortunate enough to have been involved in “evangelical” Christianity at one stage in my life, let me assure you that they care little about faith by example – by doing unto others as they would have done unto them – and more about political ambitions like using the law to legislate their own personal moral codes. They have taken the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and have twisted it for the political and financial gains of a handful of “evangelists” whose only reason for being in religion is to enrich themselves (Robertson’s “blood diamonds,” anyone?. Evangelical Christianity, as it is known today in the United States, is a sham and a scam, no better than the “psychic phenomena” that was big in the 1990s, in which unscrupulous people preyed upon the gullible and the spiritually weak for financial gain. Except with evangelicals, they conveniently hide behind the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. And, as with any other entity in this nation who identifies as “conservative,” they just as easily project their desires to persecute any religion different from their own version of Christianity, upon their opponents to distract attention away from their behind-the-scenes machinations. Only this time, more people are awake and aware. Liberals were never the reason for the downfall of Christendom in the American public arena. Evangelicals are.

Here’s what I wrote to Rev. Morris’ “boss”, Pres. Matthew Harrison:
“Nice job with the Rev. Rob Morris of Newtown, CT. Fantastic demonstration of how to be an ambassador for Christ! The only “war on religion” in this country is the one which the religious hypocrites are conducting. Newtown, CT lauds the Rev. Morris and you have embarrassed your church and yourself.”
Here’s the link for contact, should you wish to offer them similar words of appreciation for all the good they do:
InfoCenter@lcms.org
And when I got a response full of meaningless blather, here’s what I wrote back:
“We in Connecticut are proud of Rev. Morris and are astounded at how he has been humiliated for providing Christian witness. You ought to be holding Rev. Morris up as an example of what you claim you’re supposed to be – a witness to non-Christians. Instead, he has been reprimanded and your church has been made to look like a gathering of un-Christlike hypocrites in the national press. Congratulations. I can’t even imagine how President Morris would treat Jesus Christ if he observed Him hanging about with Mary Magdalene. Because he certainly wouldn’t recognize Him.”
Feel free to contact them yourselves, folks!
P.S. As far as Bryan Fischer goes, he is just a deranged freak. Does ANYONE take him seriously?

What the folks at this particular synod and people like Bryan Fischer don’t seem to understand is that you cannot spread Christianity to others by alienating yourself from the and making enemies of them. When Jesus sat down to eat a meal with tax collectors, the Jewish church leaders expressed their opposition to it. IMO, Fischer and many of the other evangelicals are like the Pharisees and Sadducees that lived in biblical times.

Slightly OT, but relevant to Hraf’s comment stating,
“…It’s perfectly alright, on the other hand, to force non-Christians to worship the Christian God…”
Here’s a fundie named Swanson who encourages teachers to defy the law and push religion on their students (see Talk2Action.org)
“…Swanson even admits that teachers who go down that route will likely be fired in short order. His argument? Those decisions impose a “false religion” of humanism, and any educator who ignores them is obeying God’s law. He also claims that the reason our country is going in the wrong direction is that several generations of kids haven’t grown up with the fear of God.
….However, in his view, those [teachers] who don’t [teach from the bible] are part of the problem. His argument is that the fear of God is the beginning of all knowledge, and Christian teachers who don’t teach the fear of God are dangerous to this country’s future.
Swanson’s co-host, Dave Buehner, even went as far to suggest that a Christian teacher should encourage parents to pull their kids out of school if they aren’t being taught the fear of God.”
There you have it! It’s official; teach fear and hate or you’re not an obedient slave of the authoritarian
ruler who lives in the sky.

Fischer is about as “Christian” as Hitler but not nearly as charming. He’s the kind of person who would make Jesus roll his eyes and mutter, “Who is this bozo? Thanks for f**king up the real meaning of my message, ass****.”
I was raised by fundie freaks like Fischer but luckily developed immunity to this kind of bigoted poison. Now I’m a loud & proud atheist, so guess all I can say to Bryan and his fellow zealots is “Thanks, guys—free at last!”
