Bush Look-a-like Rick Perry Is Now Channeling Sarah Palin
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
Non-answers are a sort of Republican staple these days. These guys – and gals – don’t like questions and they sure don’t like having to answer them, so they don’t. If they don’t beat you up, they just change the subject or act as confused as they really seem to be. Rick Perry, after a fast start, has come under close scrutiny after his debate appearances. And people are starting to take notice – even Republicans – and the mainstream media.
Look at Salon’s analysis of the Republican response:
After last night’s debate, Bill Kristol’s Weekly Standard opined that “no front-runner in a presidential field has ever, we imagine, had as weak a showing as Rick Perry” and called it “close to a disqualifying two hours for him.” Michelle Malkin ridiculed him for his inability to formulate intelligible responses. David Limbaugh pronounced himself ”concerned” that Perry is in “deep trouble.” Erick Erickson called his performance ”a train wreck.” And on and on.
Former Bush White House press secretary Dana Perino’s assessment was a ball-buster. She tweeted, “This was like a 3rd date with Perry – where you decide if you’ll go on a 4th…would you?” Ann Coulter turned her turned her acerbic wit on a fellow conservative for a change by tweeting, “Governor Perry losing debate with his own tongue.”
Even the conservative media elite has taken notice.
Watch the video from TPM:
For example, Time Magazine’s Battleland blog, “Where military intelligence is not a contradiction in terms .” In a post entitled, “Of Stupid Answers and Arms Sales” on September 23, Mark Thompson took on Rick Perry’s gibberish at the most recent Republican debate. The topic was Pakistan.
Thompson wrote that “We don’t dip our toes into domestic politics too much here on Battleland — that’s why TIME has Swampland. But sometimes we just can’t resist. In Thursday night’s debate, a questioner asked Texas Governor Rick Perry what he would do if he got a 3 a.m. phone call saying Pakistan’s nukes had fallen into the hands of the Taliban. His answer, in toto:”
Well, obviously before you ever get to that point, you have to build a relationship in that region. That’s one of the things that this administration has not done. Just yesterday, we found out through Admiral Mullen that Haqqani has been involved with, and that’s a terrorist group, directly associated with the Pakistani country. To have a relationship with India, to make sure that India knows that they are an ally of the United States. For instance, when we had the opportunity to sell India the upgraded F-16s, we chose not to do that. We did the same thing with Taiwan. The point is, our allies need to understand clearly that we are their friends, we will be standing by there with them. Today, we don’t have those allies in that region that can assist us if that situation that you talked about were to become a reality.
Parse this response if you can. It’s rather amusing to hear Perry call Romney “slick” at a Florida Republican gathering when you consider that Romney is actually very well spoken, in contrast to Perry. Romney has yet to spit out a mess like this. And Perry’s own sincerity is open to question along with his command of the English language.
To understand Perry, first you’d need to have a clue what the hell Perry was saying – (and don’t assume a good stiff drink will help) let alone trying to say. One gets the immediate idea that he did not expect to be asked about Pakistan. So lack of preparedness is one problem. Not having an answer would be another. Look at what Time’s Mark Thompson had to say to this nonsense:
This guy flew planes for the Air Force? He wants to be President? His baffling, incomprehensible non-answer is akin to what Winston Churchill said of Russia: it’s a riddle in a mystery inside an enigma. Apparently, the only way to keep Pakistan’s nukes out of Taliban hands is to sell them upgraded Texas-built F-16 jet fighters. Alas — Pakistan already has Texas-built F-16 fighters, and they’ve been upgraded — see here, here, here, and here.
It’s been noticed by many that Rick Perry is a George W. Bush clone – earnest but not too bright, the kind of guy who flies by the seat of his pants rather than putting much thought into anything. With regards to foreign affairs, Perry seems even more clueless than his Texas predecessor – he reminds one more of Sarah Palin’s vague awareness that foreign countries exist. And this is the Republican front-runner for president.
Even the people seem to have noticed, to judge by Rick Perry’s upset in Florida’s straw poll at the hands of Hermann Cain, 37 percent to 15.4 percent of the vote.
Scary. And America deserves better. We have literally “been there, done that” and we shouldn’t have to do it again.

I read a post by Steve Benen about Perry’s debate performance last Thursday, and I agree with him. Benen’s position is that the rank and file of the Republican Party don’t seem to care whether the leader of the free world knows what he’s talking about or not as long as they perceive that the person has all of the personal qualities that they think a POTUS should have. That’s how we ended up with 8 years of GWB, and you’re right, Hraknkell, we’ve been there and done that and shouldn’t have to go through it again, but Americans seem to be particularly susceptible to falling prey to politicians without substance. The irony is that they keep electing these superficial, intellectually-challenged, self-serving politicians and wondering why things don’t get any better.

Do Americans confuse politicians with movie stars? The cult of “stardom” and “celebrity” got its origins in the U.S. and the advancement of communications over the last 20 years has shortened the average attention span. Back in the day, folks were prepared to sit through 15-20 minutes of newsreels at their local movie theatre, and to read a newspaper or, when an election was looming, actually travel distances to hear what the candidates on BOTH sides had to say. They went to listen, not to serve as a cheering section to ensure exposure on the evening news or the partisan political blogs.
Now, it’s more like “Who’s the prettiest/handsomest”, who gets more media attention, and who cares what actually comes out of their mouths “cuz don’t we know all politicans lie”?
At least, that’s my take on it!

Thats the really Scary part-right now,it does not matter WHICH Repub would get elected.Every single one of these people today, would simply be” yes men”,for their uber-wealthy friends and corporations, and take the middle class and poor down as far as they can stomp us into the dirt-no question!Elect any one of these Repub fools now,and this Nation is “Done”,at least for our lifetimes, and our childrens! These are mean, crazed, power&money hungry people, who have NO CONCERN for any normal, working person-none at all.

Well, as my sister, who spent her life in educational publishing, said the other day: Let’s face it. Americans are a whole lot dumber than they used to be.

Even Fox BLues slammed him. I read one article that said he should pack it in, he doesnt have what it takes. No different that Palin or Bachmann
Its horribly unbelievable that the GOP would consider these people. Everyone of them are idiots.
But like the cops and city officials have been bought in NYC, the Koch and other rich will very probably prevail. Perry could very well end up president

Perhaps he could respond to questions on foreign policy by saying he can see Mexico from his back porch.

I just came across a current article, about the Texas, and the horrible water situation down there-and its not just because of the drought this year, bad as that is for sure.Because I have spent a lot of time in many states, for my job over the years, and Texas being one of them,I have been aware that the overall water situation there has not been good for a long time. But,what I really found interesting in the article I read was HOW bad it actually is,AND the fact they have known it,and have had plans in the works FOR 4years,to build the water infrastructure they HAVE to have in order to even SURVIVE AS A STATE by 2060! One official saying that if these projects dont get moving-building dams, all sorts of things, that in a few years the state of Texas Will need to close its doors and say”We Have No More Water to go around,to allow any more new people to move to Texas! NOW-here is the INTERESING PART! These critical Water Projects have been mostly PUT ON HOLD THE LAST FOUR YEARS,WITH THE STATE ALLOCATING ONLY A FEW MILLION DOLLARS WHERE BILLIONS ARE NEEDE-And IT GETS EVEN BETTER! Evidently Rick Perrys’wonderful”miracle”Governing WONT BE GIVING THE STATE ANY MORE DOLLARS FOR THESE CRITICAL PROJECTS-”UNTIL TEXAS RECEIVES THEIR YEARLY MONEY FROM-guess where?-their yearly allotment, for the state,FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!” You Know-That Rick Perry who” will Work Everyday to Keep the Fed.Govt Out of Your Business!”Yep,THAT Rick Perry-who even then, does NOT plan to give much of that federal money to those badly needed water projects!

I knew it was only a matter of time before Perry was measured and found lacking. But they seem more focused on the point that he is faltering in his debates than on his demonstrably horrible record as governor. Actually, both matter equally. Being proudly and willfully ignorant seems to be a prerequisite to run for GOP presidential nominee, a paradigm that Sarah Palin established. But it’s an even sadder commentary that there are Americans who don’t learn from experience. The presidency of GW should have been ample proof that there has to be substance to potential presidents.

@Anne: I even reread that article this morning,on how the horrible water situation has been ignored while Perry has been govenor down in Texas, and,as I said, I knew it,but not the extent he has let it go to,and you are SO right-about Rick Perry lacking in nearly every way! One of my children,a well established business person, with a masters degree, had always been interested in living in Texas, and had, like me,been there many times, for their job.Well, last summer this child of mine got an opportunity to move to Austin,Texas and work. This child is not only a bussiness person, but has also taught school at several big colleges and Universities,as a visiting teacher,so of course was interested in also doing that in Texas-BUT-after Finding out what”miracle”Gov.Perry has done to absolutely RUIN education in Texas(and even Barbara Bush said that),my child left Austin,TX.in disgust, for a job in another state where they still VALUE education!Of course, the more Repub/Teapub govenors these states get,the more states that will leave OUR CHILDRENS education behind because they all know THEIR children will be sent to top schools, while the rest of kids are”dumbed down”-and Repubs WANT that to keep from having the”have-nots”children from becomming smart enough to go forward and move these extreme Repubs OUT,where they belong!

The more I learn of Perry’s record, the worse he looks. Anyone who would vote for him as president will do so at his or her own peril, not to mention the peril to this country if he should ever become president. As far as I’m concerned, there is absolutely NO excuse for refusing to acknowledge his extremely serious shortcomings, both as a governor and as a candidate for the presidential nomination–not to mention the presidency itself. If he or anyone like him got elected, the loss of respect from the rest of the world would be severe, inescapable, and irreversible.

Rick Perry has been the worst governor ever. His record on Healthcare, education, civil rights have been abominable. The only reason he has been re-elected in this red state is the fact he was an incumbent and a Republican. He’s just a pretty boy wannabe.
