Dearborn Mayor John O’Reilly fired off a letter to Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle, saying she is “misled” about his city. O’Reilly invited Angle to visit Dearborn, where there has been a Muslim mosque for 90 years and they are nowhere near under “Sharia law” or a situation of “militant terrorism”. They mayor explained that people in his community by and large try to work together and Angle might want to visit the city before she slanders again.
How did American politics come to be about taking rights away from people when the founding of our country was centered on the giving of rights? And how is it that the group that rants the most about lost rights turns out to be the one most in favor of denying them to anyone else?
CNN reports that the Catholic Church is concerned about the sustainability of Christian communities (most of them not Catholic) in the Middle East. The fear is that Islamic fundamentalism poses a threat to their survival. What is interesting from the perspective of the American political/religious landscape is the reason given for this Islamic threat, and that is that “Oftentimes, relations between Christians and Muslims are difficult, principally because Muslims make no distinction between religion and politics.”

Joe Miller has until tomorrow to respond to the Fairbanks Borough’s lawyer’s request that he release his personnel records for the purpose of correcting the misrepresentations Joe’s been making regarding why he won’t release the documents. The little shifty devil running for Governor in Georgia, Nathan Deal, has one more scandal to add to his seemingly endless fiscal scandal rap sheet. Nathan is running as a fiscal conservative. Naturally, this means he is good at grifting money from you and me and the government and manipulating the system to take advantage of loopholes and get no bid contracts for companies in which he has an interest.
It’s a conundrum when you are running as a DC outsider as you have no record to prove you walk your talk. How are voters supposed to know what you stand for? Well, they can always look at your life, right? Um, that is, unless your life is the opposite of the values you’re campaigning on. It is, after all, hard for the people to trust that you will somehow govern differently than you live.

It’s not Democrats who are accusing America’s first black president of being a watermelon-picking white-hating racist and a Muslim. It’s not Democrats who go to Tea Party rallies and wave Confederate flags all over the place. That would be the Republicans.

New polls released in Kentucky, Nevada, and California show that Democrats are making a big comeback in each state, and the tide may be turning against the GOP. In Kentucky Rand Paul has blown a 15 point lead in less than a month. In Nevada, Harry Reid is up by 5 points on Sharron Angle, and in California the Democrats in both the gubernatorial and the Senate races now lead.
Women of the progressive voting bloc, how long have we been sleeping? I’m not sure how we got here, but our medical rights are not being honored as they should be. The administration is currently going to ban abortion coverage in the newly created Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans. This ban would prevent women with serious pre-existing medical conditions — like cancer or diabetes — from getting the abortion coverage they need to protect their health.
This time they will be competent, faithful, and have integrity. This time it will be different. He said so. And after all, look at the picture! There they are standing in front of a small business as they make their pledge to us, so they must care, even though they voted against small businesses. Lie to me, I promise, I’ll believe.

Republicans are all jacked up on their latest fear crack over reports from Woodward’s new book on Obama, wherein he reveals that the President said essentially the same thing George W Bush said: America can absorb another attack, we are strong.
Former President Carter recently called out Fox News as being a source and propagator of paranoia against Obama, including birtherism and Christianism. Even though the Right loves to make fun of President Carter, Fox was scared enough by his accusations to attempt to debunk the former President via their old Breitbart fallback of misleadingly editing footage to cover their sins. Media Matters called them out on it.
Today, Palin must have been high on her Tea Party video release, and full of that dangerous combination of arrogance and incompetence, took to twitter to tell the Left off. However, I don’t need to tell you that in the process of this she revealed her utter ignorance — a fact which Keith Olbermann was kind enough to point out to the Tea Party leader.
Last night, Rachel Maddow applied her razor-like intellect to expose the inherent hypocrisy in the modern GOP, hiding beneath a thin veneer of cowardly double-talk. One of her examples was Bob Corker, R-TN. Corker fought to kill the US auto industry. He filibustered the auto bailout, holding it hostage until he could be promised that the auto workers would be paid less and ultimately voted no on it.
Beck is attacking Harvard graduate and former Vice President of the American Law Institute Elizabeth Warren, using his usual lamestream media accusations and lies. Beck is upset because the President appointed Warren to oversee the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Warren “is one of our country’s fiercest advocates” for the middle class, Obama said Friday when introducing her. Right there, you see what the problem is.
This morning, Malia Litman (owner of MaliaLitman’s “A Rebuttal to the Rogue” blog) alerted PoliticusUSA that she had uncovered a rather large lie Sarah Palin has been peddling to the American public. Litman did an exhaustive investigation which revealed that Palin has been fooling the American people about a fundamental aspect of who she is as a person.
Christine O’Donnell is an extremist who believes that a wife should be subservient to her husband. What I find most hypocritical about this, however, isn’t the fact that she and Palin are trying to sell women being subservient as the “new feminismâ€, but that at the very same time they are touting this kind of good girl routine, sucking up to the patriarchs with their winks and cheerleader smiles, they are also engaging in highly emasculating behavior.
Palin went all Tea Party gangsta on Karl Rove for Rove’s accurate analysis of the threat O’Donnell poses the GOP’s big dreams of taking the senate back this fall. Tonight on the The O’Reilly Factor, Palin called Karl out, issuing a few body blows to the Great White Thug in round one of the battle for the helm of the GOP.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and suggest to my new pals in the Tea Party that we start pushing Christine O’Donnell for President!
After all, Christine has never quit her job. She’s hotter than Palin, younger than Palin, and she puts the cute in cute. Plus, while she doesn’t know anything, at least she has no ethics violations under her belt. Sure, she’s using campaign funds to pay rent and that ain’t legal, but really, who cares? She hasn’t been busted yet, and even if she is, we can just lie and say she hasn’t been.

They are no longer there in a combat role, however.

And then he turned around and asked for 260 million dollars from job legislation funded by the stimulus he railed against to pay for Medicaid expenses.
Both top US commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, and one of his deputies, Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, are warning Americans that burning the Quran will endanger the troops in Afghanistan (and around the world), who are there fighting a war started by Republican President George Bush. A fearful nation awaits a leader from the Republican Party to grow enough courage to take a stand for us and for our troops and their mission.
It’s a question of productivity versus happiness as the ultimate judge of the welfare of nations. Yes, this is an argument for a socially just Democracy, or as I like to call it, civilization. Nic Marks must surely be a socialist. At TEDGlobal 2010 he suggested that we would be better off to measure success by happiness rather than productivity. Cue the crazy jihad nut job dance from the Right (plus a Glenn Beck cry fest), but meanwhile, I ask you on this Labor Day, have you ever been to a country where they valued overall contentment of the people over their productivity? It’s a Union Tweetfest, peeps. Because nothing says Labor Day like honoring and celebrating this country’s proud heritage of unions. Union workers are the backbone of this country. They span from steel mill workers to Hollywood writers, nurses to auto workers. These are the Real Americans, working hard to provide for their families. The union created the middle class. The Union helped pass pro worker legislation like the Fair Minimum Wage Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The seduction of the Tea Party for the people on the ground is obvious; they feel politicians are betraying them. They don’t trust Washington. They’re threatened by change. These elements never change; they are always ripe for manipulation by the dirtiest politicians who appeal to fear. All they need is a scapegoat upon which to funnel their impotent rage.
Mobs are forming in America. It takes courage to do the right thing when it’s the unpopular thing to do. A coward finds it easy to go along with the mob and it is the exceptional man who, like President Obama, will say, “Now, hold on just a minute…”
And then yesterday, as the President got ready to announce the last combat troops were out of Iraq, and the nation could finally let out its war-weary breath on one front, Republicans had the nerve, the unmitigated gall, to warn the President of the United States to not take “credit” for Iraq. Instead of acknowledging these sacrifices over your mistake, instead of fighting for Veterans’ benefits, instead of finding one damn thing to be positive about, Republicans can not stop being ungrateful, petty, small-minded, empty-hearted partisan hacks.

It seems that Sarah Palin has enlisted some help in her war against Medicare, as yesterday on Face The Nation, her handpicked Alaska US Senate candidate Joe Miller told the nation that Medicare is unconstitutional, thus furthering Palin’s un-Mama Grizzly like jihad against Medicare, and her advocacy of a policy that killed 254 Alaskans while she was governor.
Perhaps, the most discouraging thing about both Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton’s rallies today is not what was said, but that the two separate and unequal rallies took place at all. Beck’s whites want their country back, while Sharpton’s African Americans are reduced to second class status. These rallies show that King’s dream remains unfulfilled.
It’s sort of a dirty little secret that in America, an intimate partner killed approximately 33% of female murder victims and more than 600 women every day are sexually assaulted. And what about the “conservatives” who claim to oppose Islam over the way women are treated don’t seem to give a good hoot what goes on here, in their own country? Here, where women are supposed to be free.

The Democrats will be happy, because after all, Sarah is their biggest fund-raiser and who is easier to run against than a fringy Tea Partier? But you? You will not be happy.
The American political system assumes that all parties will behave responsibly and continue to try to govern the nation even through disagreement. For one party to completely withdraw from the process and insist on their status as “a government in exile†is something the Founders never foresaw.
A member of the Republican National Committee, Kim Lehman, has publicly accused the President of being a Muslim and her Party has remained mum, failing to correct her or condemn her behavior. Ms Lehman said she was referencing a speech Obama gave in Egypt in 2009. The transcript of the speech does not support Ms Lehman’s accusation.
“The most radical President ever to occupy the Oval Office.†That’s the sound of an anti-government movement of hate funded by billionaires being sold to “average Americans”. Sort of a Tea Party madrassa, if you will. The Tea Party’s funders are serving up their manufactured narratives and much of the public is eating it up.
Hey, it’s a “free” country and Todd can live to secede if he wants! What matters is that he’s the kinda guy I want to have a beer with. He’s a middle class fisherman who doubles as Mr Mom. Sure, he puled a Rove and refused to comply with a subpoena, but what did you expect him to do, lie under oath? And since nothing says Pro-life Christian like a tacky attempt to intimidate a citizen, here’s Palin’s America — oh, and while you’re watching it just imagine if Todd were black, the outrage we’d be hearing:
Well, let me fill you in, lest you be caught unawares at the water cooler by a colleague who begins to spew Fox Talking Points. The RNC had a blog post about President Obama taking “another†vacation. Another brilliantly relevant and accurate political criticism of the President naturally ensued. Glaring as it was in hypocrisy, Republicans took a shine to it. They figure between the racial division they’re drumming up on one hand, this little nod to the lazy Black man on the other will really finish Obama off and get them the House back this fall!
I don’t know about you, but for years, I’ve been secretly longing for that Time Life moment post World War II; the kiss of a returning soldier, the final exhale of an exhausted nation. I can’t say that I pictured a happy America, but I had imagined a unified America. But we aren’t going to get that moment, because there was a war in between WWII and Iraq. We’re scared. Not only have we’ve been lied to rather recently (WMD), but we’re battling with our national scars from our defeat in Vietnam.
In what I can only describe as the reverse of the trickle down theory, the Republicans get to know their Mama Grizzly a bit better, more and more of them hop on the Not Fit to Lead bus. As GOP opposition to her grows, establishment conservatives are doing their best to put the brakes on the Palin crazy train.
