Ezra Klein, filling in for Rachel Maddow, gave the GOP no respite as he labeled this Congress the “do less than the do-nothing Congress” of 1947
Michele Bachmann’s anti-Muslim witch-hunt has backfired, drawing condemnation from fellow Republicans and mockery from the Muslim Brotherhood
The Republicans are continuing their march toward total destruction of America. Democrats are enablers through not going to the polls.
Pepco spent years ignoring aging equipment and tree-trimming and focused instead of increasing profits leaving a million people to suffer in record heat
This is a huge reason for the stubborn unemployment! President Obama doesn’t have the benefit of adding public workers to the payroll, like Reagan did.
Dr. James Dobson is an Obama-basher of long standing, and his behavior demonstrates why this country can never compromise the separation of church and state.
America is capitalism run amok. A handful of greedy individuals and corporations currently control all the money and power.
A turnover of as little as 5 or 6 house seats in California could mean that Democrats once again control the House of Representatives.
Dick Lugar lost to his Tea Party opponent in Indiana’s GOP primary. Is this a victory for Tea Party extremism or is it an opportunity for Hoosier Democrats?
Another state has added its political voice of opposition to gay marriage. North Carolina approved an amendment forbidding same-sex marriage.
Senate releases a statement obliterating claims by Jose Rodriguez and others that torture was a “central component” leading to success in the operation against Osama (Usama) Bin Laden.
President Obama looks like he’s going to be re-elected, no African Americans will be elected to the Senate in 2012, but their support will be critical in Senate elections across the country.
After a three year study, the Senate Intelligence Committee is confirming what many of us already know. Aside from being un-American, immoral and illegal, the Bush Administration’s torture policy didn’t work.
The future looks bleak for John Edwards. It all started going downhill when he started an adulterous affair with a little known filmmaker, Rielle Hunter. He is now standing trial on federal charges.
The conservative justices want to kill the ACA. If they do, it will mark the beginning of the end for anything meaningful to emerge as long as Republicans have a majority in any branch of government.
The Republican Party is out to ‘get’ Barack Obama, and they are using Eric Holder and a bogus Fast & Furious investigation to do so.
Rick Santorum won in Alabama and Mississippi because Evangelical right-wingers constituted the overwhelming majority of Tuesday’s Deep South voters. And they voted race no matter what they tell you.
I don’t dislike many people. I hate a few – the boss who fired me with 4 kids at home; Limbaugh; people like that. But I generally don’t dislike most fellow earthlings. There is one crepey-necked creep however, who stands out in the dislike department. I dislike what he says. I dislike what he stands…
Another day, another Republican caucus, another chance for conservatives to pick the candidate who will have the honor of losing to Obama.
America and its president face many challenges in 2012 because of an obstructionist Republican House, but Obama has constitutional remedies
Republicans have tried every possible delaying tactic: an amendment by John McCain, failed Saturday on a 59-37 vote; on Sunday, a second by Jim Risch, 32-60.
If Kyl, DeMint, and McConnell are such devout Christians, why do their voting records belie their claim that they are followers of Christ? Shouldn’t their single-mindedness of faith permeate every aspect of their personal and working lives?
President Obama’s tax compromise passed Thursday with a 277 to 14 (139 Democrats and 138 Republicans voting aye). The Senate passed the legislation Wednesday.
Joe Scarborough and the MSNBC Morning Joe crew blasted Senate Republicans today for invoking Baby Jesus and Christmas to cover up their complaints about maybe having to work on Christmas. Scarborough pointed out that millions of Americans, including the troops, will be working on Christmas, and he accused Senate Republicans of, “throwing Baby Jesus under the bus.”
On her MSNBC program Rachel Maddow recently sat America down and tried to explain to them how Republicans have managed to break the US Senate by abusing the filibuster. Maddow said, “Since they lost the Senate they have turned it into a stronghold for their own party by using power the senate minority is usually entrusted not to abuse. They’ve used that power to break the institution.”
Michele Bachmann wants to “redefine†earmarks. Do a little tweaking here and there and you can spend wantonly yet present yourself as a fiscal conservative.
Despite standing up in front of the media and proclaiming their outrage over the possibility of compromising with Republicans on the issue of extending the Bush tax cuts, Senate Democrats again demonstrated their ineptitude by not being able to get the support of the entire caucus for limiting the tax cuts to total income of $250,000 or less. The all talk no unity Democrats have now forced the same compromise that they claim to hate.
Mitch McConnell and his Republican brethren are holding legislation hostage until the Democrats give them tax cuts for the rich. They claimed that this pledge didn’t include the START treaty, and then like clockwork, they started denouncing the START treaty. Democrats are beginning to realize that negotiating with Republicans “is almost like negotiating with terrorists”.
It is obvious that moderation has no place in modern Republican discourse, whose rhetoric is based on confrontational and inflammatory statements, the more outrageous the better.
American government has lost its designation as a representative democracy, and is turning into a racket where one man, or one party, dictates its will on the entire government, and apparently no-one is willing to stop the demise of democratic rule. There is much talk about compromise and bipartisanship from the Democrats, and the White House, but in the 21st Century American democracy, it is a fallacy and a joke.
You can search and search; you can look high and low, but you won’t find much. Right now, the closest thing the Republicans seem to have to a real policy is orchestrating a win for Bristol on DWTS.
Apparently, pride is an issue with Meek and he must think he is making a statement. He is making a statement; he’s saying it’s acceptable to give Rubio a six year stint in the Senate just to say, “I didn’t give up.â€
Oh, didn’t they tell you? When they said “grass roots movement†of the people, by the people…yada yada, they meant elitist oligarchs should be in power, either through ignorant puppets who don’t know better like Christine O’Donnell or the real live bona fide Oligarch types like we have here in John Raese of West Virginia, cuz nothing says populism like inheriting somewhere around 79 million dollars.
Tea Party darling Joe Miller has just about toasted his 2010 Senate hopes. After a bad few weeks during which reporters have sought information regarding his military discharge, his previous employment history and reason for termination of said employment, the truth about his many uses of federal government money for his own family and then the now infamous hand cuffing of a journalist, Joe should be toast.
The clock is ticking. Joe Miller has until tomorrow to respond to the Fairbanks Borough’s lawyer’s request that he release his personnel records for the purpose of correcting the misrepresentations Joe’s been making regarding why he won’t release the documents. Uh-oh. Looks like what we have here, boys, is another Palin pick gone bad.
It’s a conundrum when you are running as a DC outsider as you have no record to prove you walk your talk. How are voters supposed to know what you stand for? Well, they can always look at your life, right? Um, that is, unless your life is the opposite of the values you’re campaigning on. It is, after all, hard for the people to trust that you will somehow govern differently than you live.
Sharron Angle proved herself another FOX News-ready Constitutional expert when she said, “Government isn’t what our founding fathers put into the Constitution. This is different,” Angle said.
I thought I’d best just head on over to the Institute to see what old Dan Webster does believe in, since he claims he does not believe women should submit to their husbands. When the Tea Party says they want to take their country back, they mean you, too. You. Mama Grizzly. Submit to me. On your knees, woman and keep that mouth closed unless you can keep it meek and subservient.
I’m tellin’ ya’, you’re going to be hearing a lot about how lame ducks shouldn’t be doing anything – because, well, if they were to do something, it would be more liberal legislation than the Republicans want. In order to avoid this, Republicans are attempting the preemptive strike against lame duck legislation. This is, of course, the opposite of what the Republicans thought when they were the lame ducks and they did small things like impeach a president.
As a member of Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ staff slurred gays on the internet from the Senator’s office we are reminded once again why Shameless Saxby exemplifies the modern day GOP which has become a purely regional party that represents the dirty underbelly of the South.
On today’s (September 17) edition of Fox News’ Fox & Friends, Geraldo points out O’Donnell has no qualifications for office. This moment of sanity doesn’t go over well with the Fox game show hosts and the infomercial hostesses, who are super busy trying to sell the oldsters some Christine O’Donnell as a “common sense conservativeâ€.
Christine O’Donnell is an extremist who believes that a wife should be subservient to her husband. What I find most hypocritical about this, however, isn’t the fact that she and Palin are trying to sell women being subservient as the “new feminismâ€, but that at the very same time they are touting this kind of good girl routine, sucking up to the patriarchs with their winks and cheerleader smiles, they are also engaging in highly emasculating behavior.
It’s not often we get to see a real fiscal conservative in action in the current Republican Party. The rarest of rare breeds, they were run out or co-opted into Bushpublicans who now masquerade as Teapublicans, which is an industry, not a political party. But here we have one in George Voinovich. Look now while you can, because George is retiring.
A Public Policy Polling survey done of Alaskan voters in the Republican senatorial primaries, where Joe Miller appears to be winning in a surprising upset over incumbent Lisa Murkowski reveals that 59% percent of Alaskan voters weren’t moved by Palin’s endorsement.
While the constitution forbids prohibiting a mosque from being built blocks away from ground zero (“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”), Republicans are salivating at the prospect of ignoring the constitution (again) and using this for political hay. Apparently, the Family Values Party is not concerned with the strip clubs (like New York Dolls) that surround hallowed ground (after all, we all know that Hooters is a family restaurant and Fox News is not conservative day time porn), because nothing says Christian Values and Apple Pie like a strip club.
There’s nothing like a little Right Wing silliness to make a Monday complete and this Monday does not disappoint. Sunday, Tea Partiers carrying water for the GOP’s new fear mongering Get Out the Vote tactic rallied on a private ranch owned by a hate group to show support for Arizona’s Papers First Law. This is, of course, all a part of the “Obama and the Democrats don’t keep us safe†narrative, buttressed by the fear of anchor babies and general resentment of brown people which has eclipsed the Right’s fear of gay people this election season.
Running for US Senate in California, Republican Carly Fiorina has been touting her “executive†experience (thank you Sarah Palin) as CEO of Hewlett-Packard. Her campaign bio makes her sound like she whipped that place into shape, managed a mega-merger with Compaq and helmed the “reinvention†of the company. But wait—behind the business leader façade of this Mama Grizzly pick we find some rather unpleasant facts. Carly was fired from Hewlett-Packard. How does that fit into “executive experience Couple that with the fact Hewlett-Packard is giving substantially more money to Carly Fiornia’s opponent, liberal Democrat Barbara Boxer, and you have to wonder if the Republicans vetted their picks this year.
It’s the 75 anniversary of Social Security and so, naturally, Republican leaders and candidates want to take it away from us, being the modern day anarchists they are. Any government program that does not benefit the corporations needs to go. President Obama has sworn to honor and protect your Social Security benefits from the Republicans, whose candidates have made privatization a key part of their agenda.
The sixth tenet of the Tea Party is to end corruption and yet they’ve aligned themselves with the most corrupt party. Corruption spreads on both sides of the aisle. Of late, it’s made a happy home in the Republican Party simply because like mold, corruption takes root in the right environment. The modern day Republican Party is loath to hold its leaders accountable for violating ethics laws. The list of busted criminals and cheats currently in office is astounding.
Now, after eight years of having our Constitution violated, our rights violated, and Bush acting like a “dictator” in office according to constitutional scholars, the GOP aka the Tea Party are at it again. They trying to gain the power to recall NJ US Sen. Menendez. They dress as patriots but they are traitors to freedom and democracy.
As the fall election nears, the buzz is that if the economy doesn’t recover, the Democrats will take a hard hit. Apparently the American people are too ignorant and lazy to remember exactly how we got into this mess in the first place, and will cast their reactionary votes of anger this fall against the “party in power†as if that makes any sense at all; thereby reelecting the clowns who not only are voting no on their own ideas in order to keep this economy a mess and help themselves politically, but also the very clowns who put their clown shoes on the gas pedal of recklessness that got us here.
For years, Republicans have been selling themselves as the party of business, using Small Business as the banner from which to launch their tax cuts for huge corporations, think Joe the Plumber, but when push comes to shove as with today’s Senate vote on the small business jobs bill, The Party of No reveals that it is November calculus, not small businesses that really matter.
In his weekly radio address today, President Obama lashed out at Senate Republicans who are blocking an extension of unemployment benefits. Obama essentially called the Republicans hypocrites, “They’ve got no problem spending money on tax breaks for folks at the top who don’t need them and didn’t even ask for them; but they object to…
Fox News Network, the champion if not creator of the Tea Party, hung Tea Party “rape can be made into lemonade†nut job Sharron Angle (R-NV) out to dry earlier this week. Perhaps Fox is miffed over losing their favorite, the chicken lady, to run against that evil of humanity, Harry Reid and so felt compelled to use poor Sharron Angle to demonstrate their “balance†by annihilating her on Cavuto’s “Your Worldâ€
By refusing to vote for the Disclosure Act, Brown is ensuring that our elections can be bought by special interests and big corporate powers without any fingerprints. Meaning that groups like, um, FreedomWorks can influence elections masquerading as grassroots movements, when in fact, they are funded by very interested corporate parties. FreedomWorks, doubling as a grass roots movement for the Tea Party, gave quite a pretty penny to old Scooter.
Elected as a Tea Party candidate, Scott Brown has signaled that he will support President Obama’s major financial overhaul bill which passed the House on June 30 and will come up for a vote in the Senate this week. Brown’s vote would be number 59, as in 59 of the now needed 60 to pass a bill….crossing Party lines to help the people? Close to treason, if you ask me.
On MSNBC’s Morning Joe, host and Republican Joe Scarborough tore apart Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle. Scarborough claimed that she horrified Republicans with her radical positions, and GOP fundraisers are in no mood to donate to a candidate that looks like a certain, “loser” in November.
A Senate committee on Wednesday voted to eliminate limits on liability that oil companies would face for damages stemming from offshore spills like the one in the Gulf of Mexico. The President signaled his support for higher or no caps on liability for oil companies earlier this month. While it may seem like this is just another meaningless vote, a closer examination reveals a huge paradigm shift under way, and it would be wise for voters to pay attention.
Republicans just killed unemployment benefit extensions for Americans out of pettiness and with an eye toward political gain. They know that if the Democrats can’t help the economy by this fall, the Democrats will suffer at the polls.
Just in case you thought Dick Cheney’s culpability for environmental destruction was limited to offshore drilling and the Gulf oil spill, here is Watergate II. Only this time, it’s literally about water, specifically how Dick Cheney and Halliburton poisoned our drinking water.
The World Health Organization just released appalling statistics on domestic violence against women. The ten country study included: Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, Japan, Peru, Namibia, Samoa, Serbia and Montenegro, Thailand and the United Republic of Tanzania. The report concludes that violence against women is widespread. Amnesty International is urging Americans to support the International Violence Against Women Act in response to these horrifying statistics.
After a humiliating stint on the Rachel Maddow show wherein Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul demonstrated a special talent in the art of the duck and dodge, Paul continued to Palinize himself the next day — wrapping himself in indignation, in order to mask his own deep inadequacy and lack of preparation for the important office he seeks.
A dark storm is brewing over the Senate as Republicans obstruct Presidential nominees in record numbers, abusing secret hold and laundering holds in an attempt to outrun Senate rules. The Republicans’ unprecedented use of secret holds has almost brought government to a standstill, and yet they’ve avoided all accountability for their actions by hiding under the cloak of anonymity. Senator Claire McCaskill tried to force them to own up to their holds this week.
A weekly round up of the Republican Wing Nut Circus: This week, Republicans were freaked out over good news about the economy (say it ain’t so, Joe!) so in their ever impressive attempt to “take back their country”, they did what all Real Americans do — they focused on animals. Yes, from suggesting we barter chickens for healthcare to comparing illegal immigrants to dogs,it’s been a wild GOP ride this week. Please no comments on the disturbing Freudian slips of the party of Repression and Regression. This is tough enough.
President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats are absolutely giddy today to be losing a procedural vote on Wall Street reform. Why are they so happy? If the Senate Republicans stand together and vote no, Democrats are prepared to rake them over the coals on the issue, as 2/3 of all Americans support financial reform. By being the Party of No, the GOP is painting themselves as the party of Pro Wall St.
Sarah Palin’s ties with the AIP (which itself has strong ties with white supremacists groups, the same groups the Secret Service blamed for the death threats against candidate Obama) should have been a warning about what kind of person she was, but the media were charmed by her folksy mom image. And while Americans finally decided she was unqualified to be Vice President, they never got a glimpse of the real Sarah. The real Sarah is a dangerous extremist. And she has the past to prove it.
The half-term governor of Alaska who quit mid-term due to an inability to get her agenda passed and indeed, even her own Attorney General nominated (a first in Alaska), strikes out at Obama, calling him “inexperienced†and unable to get a bi-partisan bill due to his “lack of management experience.”
The Nuns have came together to say they care MORE about pragmatic reality, MORE about helping people, MORE about correcting the unjust practices in the current healthcare system than they do obeying the patriarchs of the Catholic Church, who are cynically catering to political powers. This is a gift to humanity, the women’s movement, social justice, Democrats, and certainly Jesus if one believes.
Let’s say you were going to cast a Republican Clown Show of Hypocrites who ran on “Family Values†whilst cheating on their wives and voting against women’s rights at every turn.
Let’s imagine this is the most ridiculous Clown Show ever… so bad that these Republican Clowns actually voted against protecting battered women from being cut off from health insurance access. Yes, let’s pretend that they actually voted to ensure that in nine states, health insurance companies could tell a woman who has been battered that she has a pre-existing condition.
After Sen. Jim Bunning gave up his filibuster, the Senate quickly passed an extension of jobless benefits 78-19. All 19 of the no votes were from Republicans, and of those eight of them came from states that face higher than the national average unemployment rates and seven of these senators come from the South. This is the kind of ideologically driven vote that could come back to haunt Republicans in November.
ABC News reporter Jonathon Karl tried to get Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) to answer questions about his one man filibuster an extension of unemployment benefits. Bunning told Karl he was not talking to anyone and on his way to elevator, before the cameras arrived, gave ABC the finger. Bunning may have thought that he was only flipping off Karl, but he is really flipping off every unemployed person in America.
Democrats are ultimately responsible for solving the problem of the gridlock. But Democrats can’t force Republicans to work together to solve the country’s problems, and frankly, this meme only reinforces the illogical idea the Democrats have power over Republicans. Blaming Democrat for GOP obstructionism is ridiculous. That’s like blaming a domestic violence victim for the abuser’s behavior. Democrats have control over their own behavior, and their only choice right now is to overcome the GOP obstructionism using any legal means necessary.
What exactly does the modern day conservative stand for? They’ve got a lot of confusion going on there, and not too many solid, consistent values. We’ve got regression, rage, and stupidity as an on-going theme, and the omni-present hatred of the “otherâ€.
Democrats are sick of being kicked around and they want to see their Dem leaders KICK some ass. Right now, Liberals want to lock the Conservatives in a room with Al Franken and Alan Grayson and watch the fall out on CSPAN, cheering our guts out as they finally get what’s coming to them.
As he continues to hold up the confirmation of Obama’s TSA administrator appointee Errol Southers, Jim DeMint should be ashamed that he put politics over Americans’ safety. And not just Americans’ safety; there were people from all over the world on that flight. He owes America an apology.
We have done it. We corralled a dispirited Democratic caucus, fought a rabid right wing media machine, overcame our own ennui, to arrive here. At the beginning of a great moment in American history. Landmark moment. We will all be able to tell our grand kids that we were a part of this. And they won’t understand how this great country could have ever let her people suffer and die due to lack of healthcare.
A Waycross, Georgia Teabagger called C-Span yesterday morning, very concerned that the prayers Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) urged all Teabaggers to make that a member of the Democratic caucus would die and/or not show up for the vote may have backfired and instead killed Republican Senator James Inhofe.
The ranking Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Jim Inhofe, made a scathingly embarrassing appearance in Copenhagen. While the senator didn’t have any meetings scheduled in Copenhagen, he managed to put together an impromptu press conference, during which he took it upon himself to announce that “global warming was a hoax perpetrated on the world by the UN” and sold to Americans “by the Hollywood elite.”
Dear Republicans, we know you’re having a hard time with this concept, so we thought we’d send you a friendly reminder about the election results last year. You lost. We do not trust you to be in charge of anything, even the local WalMart.
Drugged, gang raped and locked in a shipping container by KBR contractors, Jamie Leigh Jones still hasn’t had her day in court, and when 30 Republican Senators voted against an amendment proposed by Sen. Al Franken that would hold the defense contractors accountable for their employees rapes, the GOP became the pro-rape party.
At the same time as Republicans are fighting Healthcare Reform and Universal Healthcare for all as a socialist program and denouncing government involvement in healthcare, they are inserting themselves in between a patient and her doctor, invading the patient’s privacy and medical history, and attempting to interfere in a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion in her first trimester.
Republicans have sold the meme that they just need more “time†to draft a good health care reform bill. More time? They had control of the House, Senate and WH for 6 years and they never even brought this issue up! They’ve had all summer to review the various plans and come up with an idea. Heck, they took us into a pre-emptive war with a sovereign nation quicker than that!
This week in politics brought us irony so thick you can cut it with a knife, as the Republicans waged war against the American people’s right to healthcare, using their standby shock and awe campaign. What’s shocking is that The Royal Republicans haven’t come up with another game yet. Terror, shock and awe? Is that all you got? Looks like they blew their wad in August.
