Thanks to Citizens United 1 Romney Super PAC Donor=181,000 Obama Donors
Because of Citizens United, it takes over 181,000 donations to Barack Obama to match one anonymous twenty five million dollar donation to a Romney supporting Super PAC.
Here is the video of David Axelrod laying out the numbers via CNN:
CNN’s Candy Crowley tried to criticize the Obama campaign for sending out a fundraising letter based on the proposal by Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts that he put up ten million dollars in order for their new Romney supporting Super PAC to try to revive the Rev. Wright issue, but Obama 2012′s David Axelrod pointed out what Citizens United has done to our democracy.
Axelrod said, “We put out a fundraising letter because we are facing about a billion dollars of Super PAC spending. This was one gentleman who was willing to write a ten million dollar check potentially to fund this campaign. That was the proposal, and we’re facing that all over the country. Karl Rove has a twenty five million dollar campaign up right now with undisclosed money. Money we don’t know where it came from running negative ads and that is what we are trying to combat. He got one ten million dollar anonymous donor. Our average donation is like fifty five dollars. It would take 181,000 of those donations to match the one anonymous donation that Karl Rove got.”
While the media is hung up on talking about Rev. Wright, they aren’t seeing the forest through the trees. The issue isn’t that the right wanted to dive back into the racial sewer in order to take down Obama. They have been engaging in this behavior since the day he became the Democratic nominee in 2008. The bigger point which no one in the corporate controlled mainstream media wants to discuss is that Citizens United has legalized the tilting of political power towards the few at the expense of the many.
What Citizens United has done is give wealthy conservative billionaires the ability to buy elections. The media doesn’t want to talk about the shady money that Karl Rove is raising, or the fact that Tom Ricketts can legally write a ten million dollar check in order to fund a racist advertising campaign against the President of the United States. To the corporate controlled media, which also benefits from Citizens United, these issues do not exist.
Citizens United is undermining our democracy, which is why Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment to overturn it. “There comes a time when an issue is so important that the only way to address it is by a constitutional amendment,” Sanders said of the effort to override the court decision that he labeled “a complete undermining of democracy.”
When one person has more influence over our electoral process than 181,000 of their fellow citizens, democracy ceases to exist.
The good news is that rich few may be able to out donate the many, but the many when they band together will always have more votes than the few. Citizens United must be overturned, and only through acting together can our democracy be saved.
