Late Night Snack: Clint Eastwood’s Halftime Pep Talk to America
Clint Eastwood’s Chrysler Super Bowl XLVI Commercial: It’s Halftime in America
Walking down a dark tunnel, Clint Eastwood growls, “It’s halftime.” Ahh, that voice. That iconic silhouette. He continues, “It’s halftime in America, too.”
Comparing America to the struggles Detroit has faced and is overcoming, Eastwood says that because we all pulled together, the Motor City is fighting again. He credited our rallying around what was right and acting as one for Detroit’s success.
“This country can’t be knocked out with one punch; we get right back up again and when we do the world is going to hear the roar of our engines.”
“Yeah, it’s halftime in America and our second half is about to begin.”
I hear Clint is a Republican, but not the hate-mongering type. He’s a real fiscal conservative and a hard worker. He runs his sets with notorious fairness and egalitarianism, not to mention his loyalty to crew.
In this commercial, he’s standing up for America and for all we can be; giving us a pep talk to not give up, to believe in ourselves and keep going. This is the kind of Republican we’d like to see more of. But then, that’s because he’s pulling for America to come together and do what’s right for our country, and holding Detroit up as a model for us all. He’s saying, we can overcome this economy if we pull together. I can’t think of the last time I heard a Republican say anything remotely this patriotic or inspiring.
I know he voted for McCain in 2008, but I could have sworn I heard the chant of “four more years” in his praise for Detroit’s success and heartening American spirit.

I also thought that this was the best commercial from the Superbowl. Very inspiring and uplifting (it made me forget that it was a commercial!). Very well done, and I think that Chrysler is going to get some very good feedback from this. Eastwood was perfect for this spot; he just has that “gravitas” that makes you fell all good. It is hard to believe that he is a Republican (at least like the Republicans of today).

Sarah, do you ever sleep? I think your assessment of Mr. Eastwood is spot on. I don’t watch much television, but I did see the video on line. He is what I call a Ruth Republican. My late Mother in law, Ruth was a Republican, but she walked the walk and talked the talk. She was caring, thoughtful, and truly cared about our America, and would cross party lines for who she thought was the better candidate.
Excellent article, as usual.
Bless you.

While the ultra-American Eastwood narrative was the most compelling ad of tonight’s SuperBowl, let’s not forget foreign-owned Fiat controls 52% of Chrysler. For that matter, the freedom-loving, throw-off-the-yoke-of-Prohibition spots for Bud were brought to us by Belgian- Brazillian Anheuser-Busch InBev. It was an evening of foreign enterprises capitalizing on US patriotism, which just goes to show you that our greatest export is still the American idea!

Shades of “Gran Torino”! I grew up just north of Detroit; this commercial was quite “personal” for me. Day in, day out we hear criticism of the auto industry bailouts, in lockstep with a plethora of criticism lobbed at our President, looking for anything that will stick. The auto industry IS the America I grew up in, and that sense of pride refuses to be squashed by the naysayers. Brilliant commercial! Absolutely loved it.

I am surprised to see Clint is a republican. That commercial totally felt like an ad for Obama2012! That man is the definition of cool.

The Naysayers are already out in force, claiming that Chrysler should pay back its bailout before putting “our” money into advertising. To set the record straight, Chrysler returned $1,500,000,000 of its $1,500,000,000 bailout funds on 7/14/09. Revenue to Gov’t: $22,405,894. Profit: $22,405,894.

Thank you Stonecircle. It doesn’t matter how many times you tell them, they pretend it’s not true. And then you ask, what about the banks? Have they paid us back from the Bush bailouts? Oh, that’s right, Bush didn’t make that part of the deal.

The commercial itself can’t be seen as anything but a full-throated endorsement for the auto manufacturers’ bailout and for Obama. But Eastwood’s involvement says only that the check cleared.

I wish he had thanked only those who supported Obama’s bailing out the auto industry. I seem to remember that quite a few in America did not support it.

Yes, it’s odd that a commercial would not be available; that is the point, after all.

I read somewhere else that the Republicans were trying to kill the ad. Maybe this is what they were talking about.

And in this case, Fiat has produced an add that throws a wrench in the gears. These damn foreigners making manufacturing work in the U.S. – and with unions! What are they doing?

A good case in point of how the Citizens United ruling allowing unlimited, unaccountable money in politics opens the door for foreign interests to influence our electoral process, an assertion that elicted a big fat “You lie” when Obama pointed out this problem with the ruling.

This is encouraging. I’ve been seeing other signs that reasonable Republicans are starting to rear their heads (see “Wanted: One Sane Republican Voice”, thepoliticali.blogspot.co...). I’m also surprised that Eastwood is a Republican, but that’s because Republican has become synonymous with extremist. Maybe the two party system isn’t dead yet!

I’ve known that Mr. Eastwood is a republican for a while now, but I suspect he’s of the T. Roosevelt/D. Eisenhower mold instead of the Reagan/Bush mold.

GOP insiders wringing their hands over this add was predictable. If the Obama administration continues to make progress on the economy and jobs, the GOP can take none of the credit, and will be limited to campaigning on social issues. Good luck with that!

Mary Pat raises the cogent point that Fiat owns Chrysler and since it purchased its ownership with funding from us and put no money into the “purchase” though Marchionne plans to buy the remainder from the UAW using Fiat funds. The US government conditional clause on development of the 40mpg Dodge Dart allowing Fiat to increase its stake is telling since the sales increases for last year where driven by sales of Dodge Durango and Jeep, notoriously low mileage vehicles. Have to see how many of us own one of those Darts in a year or two to see if its another Honda Hybrid or a move in the right direction. SC’s comment on revenue/profit is confusing since the US government didn’t realize a 100% return (interest rate we charged) though we were repaid in full, with interest. The interest conditions and “profit” to the government were fully met with the pre-payment of Chryslers inherent US government debt/bailout funds invested (accrued under Daimler/Cerberus ownership).
I laughed at the ad when I saw it since to me it was disingenuous and I thought all those flag waving TEA party types would be all emotional over it. Guess I was wrong. An Italian company preaching to me about perceived (since most nations people feel they share those attributes) American values and cloaking it in Clint Eastwood using an originally American brand, now Italian. The jobs are great but not much different than Hyundai/Kia, Daimler or other manufacturers building in the US for the US market as long as capital costs are low and interest on any debt is low. Narrowing wage disparities (versus say Vietnam, Korea or China)can be defrayed with low transport to market costs and if I dont need to put any money up to acquire it, have experience in that industry and need to re-enter the US market, why not?
I dont see as happy an outcome with with our investment in GM.

That ad made want to stand up and shout, “F#@% yeah!” Clint was perfect. And Old Clint moreso than Young Clint. I’m sick of the bomb-throwers who insist on politicizing everything.
