CNN Reports Steubenville Verdict With Disgusting Pro-Rapist Bias
Who knew that CNN was pro-rape? The former cable news leader could not contain their sorrow over the fact that the two Steubenville football players who raped a teenage girl have had their lives ruined.
Video courtesy of Crooks and Liars:
CROWLEY: “Again, this case was played out in juvenile court, that is why there was a judge, no jury. He decided on the verdict, as well as, you heard there, talking about the sentence.
We want to go now to CNN’s Poppy Harlow. She is in Steubenville, and has been covering this trial.
I cannot imagine having just watched this on the feed coming in. How emotional that must have been sitting in the courtroom.”
POPPY HARLOW, CNN CORRESPONDENT: “I’ve never experienced anything like it, Candy. It was incredibly emotional — incredibly difficult even for an outsider like me to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students, literally watched as they believe their life fell apart.
One of — one of the young men, Ma’lik Richmond, when that sentence came down, he collapsed. He collapsed in the arms of his attorney, Walter Madison. He said to me, “My life is over. No one is going to want me now.”
Very serious crime here. Both found guilty of raping this 16- year-old girl at a series of parties back in August, alcohol-fueled parties. Alcohol is a huge part in this.
But Trent Mays was also found guilty on a second count and that is of felony illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material because he took a photograph of the victim laying naked on the floor that night. Trent Mays will serve two years in a juvenile detention facility. Ma’lik Richmond will serve one year on that one count that he was found guilty for.
I want to let our viewers listen because for the first time in this entire trial we have now heard from the two young men. Trent Mays stood up, apologizing to the victim’s family in court. After him, Ma’lik Richmond.”
Listen.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
TRENT MAYS, FOUND GUILTY OF RAPINGIN JUVENILE COURT: “I would really like to apologize to (INAUDIBLE), her family, my family and community. No pictures should have been sent out or should be taken. That’s all. Thank you.”
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: “Anything you’d like to say, Ma’lik?”
MA’LIK RICHMOND, FOUND GUILTY OF RAPE IN JUVENILE COURT:” I would like to apologize. I had no intention to do anything like that and I’m sorry to put you guys through this. (INAUDIBLE) I’m sorry.”
(END VIDEO CLIP)
HARLOW:” I was sitting about three feet from Ma’lik when he gave that statement. It was very difficult to watch.
You know, something that came up throughout this sentencing. Ma’lik’s father had gotten up and spoke. Ma’lik has been living with guardians. His father, a former alcoholic, gotten to a lot of trouble with the law, been in prison before.
And his father stood up and he told the court, ‘I feel responsible for this. I feel like I wasn’t there for my son.’ And before that, he came over to the bench where his son was sitting. He approached him, he hugged him and whispered in his ear.
And Ma’lik’s attorney said to us in a courtroom, I have never heard Ma’lik’s father before say, I love you. He’s never told his son that. But he just did today.
This was an incredibly emotional day. These two juveniles being carried out and they will be committed today, Candy.”
Those poor, poor teenage boys who raped a 16 year old girl. According to CNN, we should feel sympathy for the rapists because their lives are ruined. Here’s a thought. Their lives wouldn’t have been ruined if they didn’t rape someone.
CNN was sure to mention the impact of the verdict on the two football players, but they didn’t mention that the victim had her life ruined too. As the victim of a violent sexual attack, she will potentially carry trauma and injuries with her the rest of her life.
Two boys may never get to play organized football again, but a teenage girl will be dealing with what happened that night forever. The football players are being punished for the crimes that they committed.
CNN is sad for the rapists who got caught, not the innocent girl who was raped.
I wish I could say that this was a CNN only problem, but the blame the victim culture being perpetuated by the media and the Republican Party has created an epidemic. It would have been appropriate for CNN to mention that this was a sad and troubling case all the way around, but the network’s sympathy for convicted rapists while never mentioning the victim was inappropriate and disgusting.
CNN should be embarrassed by their coverage. CNN apologized last year for music they used to introduce a segment about Sarah Palin, but I would hold my breath waiting for an apology for their pro-rapist coverage.

Candy, Candy, Candy! I am just shocked at you! You are so concerned about the “lasting effect” on these 2 young men? Do you care at all about the young woman. I am appalled at you! I thought CNN was more objective than this. I feel that perhaps this saved these young men from a far worse fate, considering the direction they were heading. I am saving my tears for the young woman, whose life was ruined by the actions of these two. A year or two in juvie hall? They are just lucky.

You have it right. In light of what happened at Penn State, these young men got off fairly easy. The young woman, however, will have to deal with the trauma of not only being raped, but being humiliated as well. I blame the parents first, who don’t educate their children about sex and their responsibilities, and respect for women in general. Then the school, who allows this kind of behavior to thrive with not so much as a Fair Thee Well. Despicable, Ludicrous!
They deserve all that they received for their callous, insensitive and animalistic behavior.

Not to mention that since she got splattered all over social media, the girl is gonna be cyber-stalked for the rest of her life. She’s gonna have people calling her a slut, laughing, mocking, harassing her. Because the world is full of sick, nasty people that get their jollies that way.
As a Pagan, I view rape as an abomination to the Goddess. A girl’s first time should be sweet and joyous, not this hideous assault. Rape takes something sacred and weaponizes it.

That is the most heartfelt statement about the evils of rape I’ve ever read. Thank you.
Of COURSE we mourn for all of our children who do violent and awful things. Their lives ARE ruined, their future shattered. Whether it’s these boys or any of our children with guns, they are part of our beloved community that has gone horribly wrong.
But where IS the concern for the victim??? I lived in New England when the gang rape of a young woman occurred on a pool table in a bar. It was made into a profoundly moving film with Jody Foster that FINALLY focused on the young woman. In reality she was vilified by her community who all thought she’d ‘asked for it’. It was horrible to see HER made out the evil one when all she’d done was flirt with one man she liked. She was raped by several others.
This is the bottom line – flirting with one guy is not license to him or other men to rape her. Being 16 and drunk is not authorization to rape. The penalty for imperfect judgment or putting one’s trust in others? NONE. Absolutely NONE.
I’ve written before – we’d penalize anyone who rolled a drunk MAN and stole his money. We want to give a pass to males who steal a girl’s BODY.
That is NOT what makes a civilized society, and rapists are rapists no matter their status, their sports prowess, whatever. Yes – theirs IS a tragedy, but theirs was ENTIRELY avoidable. Just don’t rape.
She committed NO crime. They did. Let’s have fair accounting for the victims in this world.

@Churchlady – I was in high school when that gang rape in Massachusetts happened and I remember how happy I was when laws were passed against spectators instigating crime by cheering rather than intervening – throughout this entire case I wondered why the lessons that were outlined in that trial (as we’re depicted so honestly in The Accused) were not being applied to the bystanders and picture takers in Stuebenville. Just hope the Ohio AG does prosecute the others, they are just as culpable.

If Livia Soprano was still with us, this is where she would say, “OH! Poor you!” Hey kids, you want to make sure those labels as “registered sex offenders” won’t be on your record and follow you around when you try to get a job after high school and college? Try by not committing a sexual offense! I hear that works wonders for your record!

I’m still having difficulty wrapping my head around this coverage from CNN. Where is the sympathy and compassion for the young girl who was put through this?
In addition, I was struck by something one of the defendant’s said, “No pictures should have been sent out or should be taken.” I don’t see an apology to the victim, but he’s apologizing for having taken and sent pictures of her. Hmm…I bet he is sorry for that since those pictures show just how despicable they are.
My compassion lies with the victim, not with the two rapists who seem to only be sorry that they were caught and proven guilty.

And then, after he made the “no pictures should have been sent out or taken,” he said “That’s all. Thank you.” Really? That’s all? You rape a young woman multiple times & then publicize it far & wide and “that’s all”? That is the extent of his “apology”? Poor, poor, jock. Sorry, Candy & Co., sorry jock parents, coaches & fans, but absolutely no sympathy for those boys from me.

Not to mention, has anyone noticed his use of the passive voice?
“No pictures should have been sent out or should be taken.”
Not “I should not have taken or sent pictures.” Not even really taking responsibility for the one part he was willing to admit to.

I have a daughter and two sons. I have given all of them the best advice that I could, that of using common sense and good judgement, based on the values they have been brought up to understand. Once they step outside of the house, there is little else you can do to have an impact on their choices. These young men, and the others that have managed to elude prosecution, made their choices that evening and I would have the same opinion with my own as I do with them….justice has been served. By those same standards, I choose where to get my news and CNN has been a big source….until now. This is the straw, as they say. You may welcome viewers from Fox but you are losing many others of my level of respect and worth. Of that I am certain.

I don’t see the “pro-rapist” tint that is claimed here. Their lives, for the mean time, are ruined. When children act like this and do hideous things, it says more about the community they are brought up in than anything about they, themselves. These kids assumed, based on everything their community, Steubenville, with all it’s ridiculous “football worship” taught them, that this was an acceptable way to act. When children fail morally, there is always a guiltier adult or set of adults behind it all. These kids should have been stronger than the so called “adults” of Steubenville and had a better understanding of right an wrong and they did know better. But being falsely worshiped for their gridiron prowess made them feel invincible, to the law and to consequence. In Spanish, they are called Mal Creado. Bad creation, an insult to one and the ones who brought them up.

I believe myself to be pro-woman and I have a 27-yr-old daughter for whom I care deeply. Being as objective as possible, I don’t know how this report could have been significantly different. The drama, that day, was based on the judgment against these young men and the FACT that their lives will be ruined. I believe it serves as a huge example to others that this kind of behavior can ruin YOUR life too. Any sympathy for them is perceived by the listener because the reporter fails to mention the impact on the victim, at that particular moment. It should have been said but it actually goes without saying that a 16-yr-old girl, who was just proven to be a victim, will have life-long consequences as well. Everyone knows that – spoken or not, particularly since the prosecution’s entire case revolved around the descriptions of what happened to her. A reporter who had covered the whole trial could easily have overlooked the fact that perhaps some listeners hadn’t become aware of the trial until verdict. I think the reporter focused only on the verdict and I think her critics are doing that as well.

Good job CNN. The young men in question would still be looking at their bright future had they not taken the time to treat a young woman like an object for scorn, ridicule, and like a sex toy. Although it is clear they saw nothing wrong in their actions, women in the media have a platform to inform young women of the dangers of alcohol even among friends, but should also take the time to teach young men that they are responsible for their urges, and not simply young women. Girls have committed suicide in this country after having pictures like these shared on social media, and yet no one cared enough to protect this young woman. The young men behaved in a despicable manner, and so did CNN.

He wasn’t sorry for a second that he raped her. Not even for an instant. He might as well said and when I do it again I will make sure no pictures are taken.

I’ll go further. I think in the Duke case, Prosecutor Nyfong charged too soon because he had seen too many of these cases with untouchable athletes getting away with rape and maybe murder, and I am not at all certain that the players in that case didn’t do it. Enough money and pressure makes evidence disappear, witnesses change their stories, and anyone trying to pursue justice being made to look like the bad guy and being professionally destroyed. I’m shocked at CNN’s remarks about this rape. This is why young girls don’t want to come forth because they are chastised and blamed. I’m not too surprised at CNN because they are liberal in their reporting. These boys are only sorry because they were caught. It wasn’t until the media coverage that they all of a sudden were sorry. They weren’t sorry when the texting began and the laughing video was sent out. I think God, this might put an end to anyone else thinking date rape is okay. Drinking underage is okay. Parents letting underage drinking happen in their homes and coaches thinking this is okay. Maybe next time it will happen to a CNN news reporters daughter and we’ll see how upset she will be for her daughter’s attackers. Shameful!

It is totally disgusting to see women voicing sympathy for the rapists and none at all for their victim. Apparently, it’s lost on them that these two made a conscious choice to abuse and degrade a girl who mistakenly thought she was among friends. Men who are falsely accused of rape are the ones who deserve sympathy because of the very seriousness of the accusation, but there is no doubt about the guilt of these two. They really thought they were being funny, clever, and cute, but even though the punishments don’t go far enough, they have gotten a badly needed reality check.

So if they already have a year’s time served, does that mean they can walk the streets? Those boys should have been tried as adults! I’d like to see the grand jury convene and show the others they aren’t/weren’t above the law. I think the coaches should be fired and anyone else who thought this was a joke. I heard about this last night and I couldn’t sleep because I was so angry about it. I intend to create a petition when I get home to demand an apology from CNN over this. I can’t believe we still live in a country wher people think “boys will be boys” or “she was asking for it” still seem like valid excuses for some to justify rape. These are two kids found guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt, of rape; they should not be treated as victims.
This morning I found an article on Yahoo that was a far more responsible piece of journalism than CNN. It did present the rapists as human without denying their guilt are slandering the victim. It also pointed to it as a symptom of being a bigger issue within Stuebenville and the US. This is responsible journalism in my mind:

As a victim of a gang rape, all I can think to express is that no reporter who’s been sexually violated in any way, would ever ignore the victim’s plight and and only express sadness at the perpetrator’s lives being ruined.
Yes this whole situation is horribly sad for ALL involved, but there is no excuse for what these boys did and the lack of intervention from the “spectators”. If those boys had physically beaten, instead of raped this girl (or anyone else for that matter) while she was unconscious, I’m guessing someone would have stepped in or at the very least verbally objected to what was happening.

Kim,
I am very sorry for what happened to you. The culture of rape that exists today is not new unfortunately and it is only getting worse in my opinion. Our police, elected politicians and those who run for office are not helping that situation, nor does it help when you have the upper command in the military dismissing rape accusations and not even investigating these crimes.
You should not have felt a need to explain the situation of your rape, but given this article and other reactions to the guilty verdicts for these two rapists, I’m not surprised you felt that need. I do hope you are doing well today.

I’m horrified this happened to you, Kim. Killing another person can be justified under certain circumstances but rape can never be.
All the women I have met who have told me they were raped were at parties where someone slipped something in their drink and then raped them when they were incapacitated, but still aware. In each case they didn’t contact the police because they were afraid they would be blamed. My own mother was beaten and raped in here own home when I was an infant. She didn’t report the man because he threatened to kill my brother and I, if she did.
I hate rapists.

Kim – how absolutely GOD awful. My daughter was abducted, thrown in a car and the men were tearing off her clothes. She resisted by kicking and finally able to drive her key into the eye of one of the attempted rapists. They threw her out of the car. The FEMALE sex crimes detective first question to her after departing the hospital following treatment was, “why were out alone at that hour.” My daughter refused to speak to them again. It is absolutely possible any information they could have received from my daughter could have led to their arrest and saved other women from sexual assault. The experienced sexual trauma nurse said she has only seen women who were actually abducted survive on a few occasions. She said this was the first time actual rape did not occur following abduction. Well guess what – my daughter felt actually raped. I am deeply sorry for the horrendous ordeal you, thank God, survived.

The people in the town know who it is, and you better believe they are broadcasting her name far and wide. In a place where football is more important than rape, she will never have a normal life.

In fact, I have seen the victim’s first name posted by a little vagina dentata who was gloating over what had happened to her classmate and calling her a slut, a drunk, and a liar.

The rapists in Ohio have been convicted. The commercial media is trivializing the effects on the young woman and crying for the rapists, which is obscene in itself, and NO ONE is talking about how the REPUBLICAN very public positions of trivializing rape and attacking women play into this situation. This did not happen in a vacuum. It happened after 2 years of very public political attacks on women by REPUBLICANS, very public trivializing and even promoting rape by prominent REPUBLICANS. Let us keep in mind that young people are impressionable and when politicians and athletes and other “role models” behave like sociopaths and misogynists, teenagers will internalize those behaviors and emulate them. While I understand that both parties are utterly corrupt, let us for a moment point a finger where it is richly deserved, the REPUBLICAN PARTY HATES WOMEN and helps foster a climate where crimes, such as the rape of this young woman in Ohio by prominent local athletes, can take place.

If, God forbid, you or your daughters ever get raped:
Not.

These boys are scapegoats and not guilty of rape as most media outlets are stating to improve ratings. They did something with their fingers, no penetration as real rapist would have done. I was listening and just barely heard the digital rape words. There is testimony the girl is a liar and claims she does not remember. I would do the same if I hung out with boys and ended up on the internet. It is a travesty to ruin these boys lives for something they never planned to do and would not have if they had not been drinking. They need to get the person who gave them alcohol when they are all underage. It is just wrong and should have been handled with no media or cameras in the court. Where were her friends if they thought she was being raped…911

Sandra,
Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the legal definition of rape; look it up.
Or, alternatively, ask yourself this:
If you were drunk and passed out and your friends – FRIENDS – penetrated you…with their fingers, with a bottle, with anything but their dicks, all while pictures were taken of this and then those pictures were posted online, would you think differently about whether you were raped or not? Moreover, would you still fight for justice for the wrong done to you in spite of the fact that you were being called a liar, a slut, someone who deserved it because she didn’t say no (never mind the fact that you couldn’t say no because you were passed out), and regardless of whether the perpetrators were star football players, or billionaires or anyone else?
Would you like it if I said you shouldn’t have pursued the case because the boys didn’t deserve to be tried and found guilty? Would you like if I said you deserved it because you were drinking? How would you feel if I said you shouldn’t have pursued justice for the CRIME done to you because the person(s) who did it hadn’t actually planned on it and they only did it because they were drinking?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF IT WAS YOUR DAUGHTER, OR SISTER, OR BEST FRIEND THAT THIS HAPPENED TO?
I truly hope you never find out, I really do, because no one – not even someone vile and disgusting like you – deserves that.

I’d really like to see how you’d react if you passed out – for any reason – and somebody fingered your twat on camera while everybody laughed and put it all over the Internet.

Sandra- do you honestly believe it’s only rape if the insert their penises! What about ther tongues? Bottle? Bat? Gun? Where would you draw the line if it happened to you or your daughter, sister, niece, mother, friend etc…? Would you tell yourself or them that you or they hadn’t actually been raped?
I highly doubt it

Here is a petition I started to try to get the Steubenville PD investigated as it seems very likely that they turned a blind eye to several other participants.

I cant remember who, but some man (on MSNBC?)was talking about the perils of men only groups, the church, sports, army and how it is corrupting of decency and morality. How all these negative deals get made, “I wont tell on you if you dont tell on me” type of deals. Or “challenges” that dare each other do foul and gross things. As long as all male “clubs” exist they will cover up their sexual deviancy, their immorality of each other.
I do have a suggestion for raising girls that CAN fight back, that will stand up…. teach them all judo and karate from 3 years old. Forget ballet and the tutus, teach them to use their hands and feet and in the process it will strengthen their minds, make them aware of their body and disallows invasions of it by others. OK, so I had an older brother I fought with, a father taught me defensive moves, but it wasnt until I took actual judo classes and did full body fighting that I felt the power flowing thru me. I was no longer afraid of freezing in emergencies or when confronted. It is time to teach our little girls to wrestle as well as the little boys. It wouldnt help this young woman, but if those boys had grown up with girls that didnt take any cr*p from them they wouldnt be so likely to view them as victims or “prey”. Much of this idea has already changed since I was a young girl, but we need to keep pushing and start raising our boys cherish and protect the weak (kittens, dogs, babies) as much as we do girls.

I am not about to sit around while our society erodes from the inside out all in the name of high school football

The boys are upset because they were caught and are now facing jail time. There was not an ounce of empathy for the victim when they were going around bragging about it. A mistake is doing something once , showing remorse and changing the behavior. This has not been done. Shame on CNN and everyone who does not teach their sons how to respect others and take responsibility for their actions! I am sick of it!
