Colin Powell Slams Sarah Palin and the Republican Party’s Obama Racism
On Meet The Press today, Colin Powell made mention of several recent racist attacks by Republicans on President Obama, and called the party on their use of racial code words.
Video via Think Progress:
Gen. Powell said, “There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that? When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?”
The 2012 election year was loaded with racial attacks from Republican presidential candidates towards both President Obama and the nation’s minorities. There was Newt Gingrich labeling Obama the food stamp president. Rick Santorum made the not so veiled claim that President Obama was giving white people’s money to lazy blacks, and Mitt Romney’s entire campaign strategy from immigration to his speech at the NAACP convention appeared to be designed to court the white vote by attacking minorities.
The examples that Gen. Powell did mention were so outrageous that even the blindest of the politically blind could see what John Sununu and Sarah Palin were trying to do.However, Palin and Sununu represent different kinds of racism within the Republican Party. Palin’s racism is symptomatic of the beliefs of the core rank and file within the GOP. Sarah Palin’s views represent the culture of racism that has overtaken the former Party of Lincoln.
In contrast, Sununu’s remarks represented the Republican Party’s cynical use of racism as a political tactic. Ever since Barack Obama won his first Democratic nomination, the Republican Party has mistakenly believed that racism is the path to defeating this president. Republicans used racism to delegitimize the president during the 2008 campaign. They continued the attacks throughout his first term, and the Romney campaign took it to whole new overt level in 2012.
The Republicans have shown no signs that two presidential election losses have taught them anything. It was important for Powell to mention the Sarah Palin style culture of racism within the Republican Party, because that is what has to change. If the Democrats nominate a white person in 2016, cynical Republican campaign operatives will see less value in an overtly racist political strategy. It is the culture of racism within the GOP that is blocking immigration reform and pushing Hispanics out of the party. The culture of racism on the right is the driving force behind the losing presidential campaigns.
The right’s racism has ruined the Republican brand, and their willingness to repair the damage that has been done will determine their future viability as a national political party.

Someone needs to inform Sec Powell that the first person to use the phrase (that Palin used to describe Obama) was Chris Matthews on the air on MSNBC during his first run for president , why isn’t he calling Matthews a racist. Also it was a Republican President that appointed him NSA, another who put him in charge of the joint chiefs of staff and another who appointed him Sec of State

Yes, including homosexuals as I love to point out as a stopper to AmeriTaliban rants. I’ve yet to have anyone reply to that.
Of course, then they go on to exclude the many different “colors” as being kicked out because of some perceived “sin/curse” brought down on them. “There, we fixed that.”
Of course, they don’t consider that he/she created women in that same image. According to them, and religious extremists across religions” women were only created to be men’s sex toys, his property, his slaves, his breeders of more men. “Sit down, shut up and worship me.”

yes he created man in His image it was man decision to sin. according to your theory he created murders, rapist adulterers, liars, cheaters, to be like him…. read your Bible I don’t care what you say or believe homosexuality is a sin it is not natural, when to men can get together and make a baby I’ll believe it.. stop trying to justify something that is wrong

Same as he created babys to die. Remember for every killing there is a victim. Obviously god created innocent fodder for guns
Harry Fritz
Jan. 15th, 2013 at 8:12 pm
No Shiva, the “innocent fodder” is for the abortionists to destroy the unborn and soon-to-be-born at a rate recently reported by Planned Parenthood of 333,964 in their fiscal year of 2011-12! That is a whole lot more than gun killings – and just by one of the many abortion providers in this country! So where is the outcry against PP? Not happening – but they will be getting $542 million in tax support. Can you imagine the howling if they would give that kind of free money to gun manufacturers?
Shiva (Moderator)
Jan. 15th, 2013 at 8:17 pm
Someone had to create all those babys to die.
Tax support? Oh you mean like we give big oil.
Comparing gun killings to abortions? Apples to oranges? Sorry
Harry Fritz
Jan. 15th, 2013 at 8:44 pm
Oh – that is a good escape – gun control vs abortion is like comparing apples vs oranges? That’s classic. yet apples and oranges are both part of the fruit family; therefore – comparable. You seek out what fits, but as soon as someone brings up a valid argument of sizable comparison, the argument gets shut out. Actually the comparison is like that of apples to crabapples. If you want to stop the killings at one level, then you must be prepared to stop the killings at all levels!
Shiva (Moderator)
Jan. 15th, 2013 at 8:50 pm
No, no comparison. Being fruits do not make the two comparable.
We have killings of all types. Many types. It would certainly be right to try to fix all of them

Now Hillary that’s a different story.I don’t what more they can do to vilify her other than they have photos of her with horns and a tail.Hold up don’t let me give them any ideas. If Hilary was to run and win the only thing the American Taliban could win is the deep deep so far deep that sun don’t even shine will be the south. One thing we don’t need is a dragged out fight between our candidates.

The real irony here is that had the GOP nominated Powell to run with McCain, they would have won because many Democrats not comfortable with an inexperienced Obama could have voted for Powell. Instead the GOP embraced ignorance and hate, and are still doing so.

Ridiculous. there has never been a case of a Vice-President nominee having that great of an influence on a race. Once Old Man McCain uttered his famous line of “the fundamentals of our economy ate strong” it was over. He could have picked Bill Clinton to run with him and still lost.

Palin was exposed as a terribly ignorant and unprepared candidate.
Her Couric and Gibson interviews were just plain awful.
She was so bad that McCain and his aides decided to keep her away from the press. Her brand was fatally damaged, and still is to this day.
Of course her worshipers still insist that she is the only human on the planet that can save America.
The plain facts are that she will never run for President

Today Sunday, 01-13-13, on Meet the press General Colin Powell delivered a scathing indictment of the current TEA-Republican party.(www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032...) “Powell’s words ring dead-on,” as Cory Booker said, and I have been putting these same comments out ever since Obama won the right to run against the GOP. Congress can deal with it’s agreed to liability, to pay it’s bills, or they can act to not pay it’s bills and throw our country into a tailspin. The only downgrade on America’s history was a direct result of Congressional combativeness and inaction of the House. TEA-types continued attack on Social Programs and Entitlements as part of the debt ceiling will throw cold water on the economy. President Barack Obama has already signed into law 2.4 Trillion dollars in deficit reduction and much more could be accomplished if the TEA-type run Republican deficit hawks would work with the president. The Republicans were for the Health Care Act before it became Obama’s signature legislation. The party with the fringe on top has been against everything Obama was for since his presidency began. Obama has done more to bring the economy back than expected as the TEA-Republican’s have totally dead-set against any proposal put forward. All of the window dressing put forth by the leadership of the combative and confrontational fringe movement has countered Obama has not been verified and in fact disproved by government reporting. What is needed now is a Democratic house to effect adequate changes to move forward and restore the greatness of the American economy. Do not sit on the sidelines and allow the few with the most power and stroke to make decisions that will effect you directly without your input. We must remember that money and power in the hands of fewer and fewer people with stricter less compassion has taken hold in many states and Washington is their next target. We can make a great change in the 2014 Mid-term election! Get active – Vote!

I for one am most pleased with the racist rhetoric from the Republican Party. The attitude of course has always been there. It is not going away anytime soon. It’s just much easier to see today. Mostly, by far, these views are a harbinger, as America ages and changes, that the Republican party will not be seeing the Presidential office for a very very long time. How can one not be pleased with that?
On the other hand, watching Rommey shift from as nearly far right as one can be at the time of his nomination, to almost indistinguishable from the Democratic Platform in the debates…(of course with a wink and nod towards those members of his party he considered smart enough to recognize that he meant none of it), makes me think the only move the Republican Party has available to it is to run a Hispanic, Black or a Woman for the presidency. Now ain’t that grand? The rank and file of the Republican Party will be jumping all over themselves to start a third political party…resulting in? No Presidency for the Republican Party! I just love it.
Grrrr!

Racism is a huge problem within the GOP, but it is far from being their ONLY problem. The misogyny, xenophobia, jingoism, anti-gay sentiments, anti-worker stances, and inability or unwillingness to live and engage in a 21st century world are equally problematic for them. Colin Powell was absolutely right in everything he said about his party, but so far, they give no signs of having learned anything of value from their 2012 defeats. I love the smackdown he delivered to Simple Sarah Palin by using her own racist words against her in particular, and against the party in general.

Racism is alive and well in both parties. If it was not we would not have red and blue states. It is totally illogical to believe that all white democrats voted for Obama. With that being said, racism is a cancer that runs deeper with the republicans. They have institutionalize it to a perfection. It allows the Palin types to flourish with little intelligence and statesmanship…. Their catch words are totally for those on both side of the political spectrum to feel free to think the way they do. I was always told that crap flows down hill. So does racism. If one lets the top continue racism the bottom will do the same. With much more openness and much, much more hatred. Too find resolutions to this racism is like searching for a needle in a hay stack. these “elected” official’s at all levels of “our” government infrastructure from federal to state, county down to city-hall and the school board members are all “our” public-servants. and they are all very much “accountable” to “us”.”we” hired them (voted them into office) to work for “us”.”we” pay their salaries and for any and all of “their” govt. projects and programs that they “create” and “approve” of with the sales taxes that we citizen’s are mandated by law to pay to them {24/7) when we purchase goods, gas, clothing, food etc. and the property taxes that are collected from us, plus the pay-roll taxes that are deducted from our pay-checks every pay-period. pay-checks that were earned by most of this country’s population with actual hard labor and sweat (in my opinion). with some of “us” making only the minimum-wage or less; trying to support a family and survive. we also support the needless wars that some of “our” public-servants deem so “necessary” at any cost; so much so that they can exercise the power to have “us” and our children “drafted” and sent to fight and to possibly die or be maimed in a war that “we” or a vast majority of the country’s citizen’s don’t agree with. we the people are also “required” to pay for these useless wars with more of our taxes. we the people “allow” these public-servants to have the power of life and death over us. let alone our general well-being and future prospects. i would say the question is; how do you rate our public-servants; service? make sure you all let them know what you “really” think of them. i am sure they will be happy to hear from you. and will want you to let them know on election day also. they are there to serve you remember that…vote and show them how you really feel.

I highly doubt the ability of the current right winged TP Republicans of ever learning or understanding the majority populace as evidenced from history to current politics. Their lack of ability to relate or to even support human and civil rights issues nationally and globally sets them apart from people (locally, nationally & globally) in contrast to democrats and liberals that are more humanistically minded. Whether my thinking is correct or not, the up coming events to happen will prove or disprove that they really do not care for anything related to what Democracy stands for… Only thing they stand for Plutocratic Policies that they will stand for at the expense of the whole USA…
In fact I definitely believe “ONLY” BIGGEST FEAR OF TP Republicans IS THAT HUMAN & CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES IF THEY ARE ALLOWED TO PROGRESS IN USA THAT THEY WILL BECOME SYMBOLIC FOR THE WORLD LEADERS TO FOLLOW SO THAT TP OF THE WORLD CAN NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENSLAVE OTHER NATIONALITIES TO WORK IN THEIR MANUFACTORIES AT SLAVE WAGES!!! Whole Issue Privitizations of anything related to governmental responsibilities… that we the people voted for and stand for?!?

Marco Rubio is the only republican so far to “rebuke” Gen. Powell for his comments. As usual, he uses the old trick/excuse of saying that the GOP has put a black male and two Hispanics in the Senate. What he doesn’t say is that the only reason these people are in the GOP is because they toe the party line and are too afraid of losing political ground if they speak openly about the racism within the party. It’s not uncommon for some people to align themselves with their opponents to pursue a personal agenda, and the GOP has many examples of these kinds of people. The Hispanics within the party keep their mouths closed as republicans trash Hispanics, and the blacks keep their mouths shut as they trash Black Americans. The main issue some republicans may have with what Gen. Powell said is that they know it’s true but they lack the courage to admit it. This is why some republicans were so outraged when Akin began to speak about “legitimate rape” and when it became known that Paul Ryan has co-sponsored a “Personhood Bill.” It’s okay with them to hold these views and it’s okay to write laws pertaining to them, but it’s NOT okay to give voice to them in public. Speaking about these topics in public opens the party up to unwanted scrutiny and exposes its extremism. This is a definite NO NO.

It is time that the black majority backs off on such name calling and we all begin to exist with each other by eliminating skin color from our vocabulary and group labeling systems. And woe be to a woman who wishes to express conservative values – she is immediately ostracised by her own “sisters.” I don’t get it. I don’t identify myself with either party because both don’t express my concept of humanitarianism, but I remain amazed at the dumbfounding positions people take that allow them to be distracted from the issues that clog up our system and destroy our individual human rights. You, Shiva, are not a true moderator – you steer this ship to the left – and so it continues to go in circles. Nothing is accomplished because the parties are reduced to calling each other names and the response is over sensitivity that demands retaliation. In the end, this republic is destroyed by secret agendas that move forward because of nit-picking by everyone using stupid insults.

Jimmy Carter would be a big step up!
I treat the race card throwers the same as a fart. The first to complain is the one who dealt it. The first to complain about racism is the racist.

My instincts are telling me that a futile and unnecessary battle is brewing in some of the most powerful places of leadership, locally, nationally, and internationally. It is about to explode in the area of Diversity. It is time for the fight to end. After decades of living, learning, teaching and observing this area; I can say that there are no winners; only losers for all that are impacted. Let the game of Football through the eyes of the late Paul “Bear” Bryant be the guide for revenue, results, and common sense.

Colin Powell just doesn’t get it. Just because Conservatives take exception to Obama’s reckless spending policies they are labeled ‘racist.’ Personally, I don’t care the color of a person’s skin but if they are in charge and follow an irresponsbile course of spending, I will voice strong objection. I am more concerned about the health of the Nation than of the greed of individuals.
