Conservative Joe Rehyansky Advocates Corrective Rape for Lesbians
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
Joe Rehyansky – have you heard of this guy? He’s all over the blogosphere right now for acting like a stereotypical male, you know, the kind who thinks all goodness flows from the tip of his penis (obviously none is flowing out of his head).
Joe’s bio tells us only a little about him:What it doesn’t tell you is that Joe is a conservative unless you’re aware of the National Review as a conservative rag. It wouldn’t be exactly fair to conclude from this that Joe is a whack job, but if you did, well…who am I to tell you that you’re wrong?
Joseph A. Rehyansky is retired from the United States Army and the Chattanooga, Tennessee, District Attorney’s Office. He is a former contributor to National Review whose writings have also appeared in Human Events Online, The American Spectator, and other publications.
Joe wrote a little piece the other day for the Daily Caller called, Don’t hint, don’t wink: An immodest proposal and this is what has attracted the attention.
Joe thinks the lesbians should be allowed to join the military so that they can be raped into changing into good little heterosexuals. Subdue them with the penis, seems to be Joe’s battlecry. Because what lesbian can resist a penis or ten?
Joe is one of those dinosaurs who thinks in the “you people” mindset. I remember Harry Morgan in an episode of MASH best exemplifying this when demanding that a black soldier sing and dance for him because “his people” are good at that. Well Joe can stand toe to toe with that character (who thank the gods was fictional – Joe ain’t):
[M]ost gays are not inclined toward military service, but many lesbians are, and it is an open secret that they do well in the calling, especially in medical and administrative specialties.
I’ve always said that lesbian women are great administrators! Yessir!
But a few penises can take care of that.
In a final argument (now removed by the Daily Caller) Joe gets to the meat (pardon the expression) of his argument:
“My solution would get the distaff part of our homosexual population off our collective ‘Broke Back,’ thus giving straight male GIs a fair shot at converting lesbians and bringing them into the mainstream.”
Joe seems to be advocating subduing lesbians with the penis and through corrective rape bringing them around to the “true religion” of “heterosexuality.”
Honestly, I’m surprised Joe still has a job, but then it’s difficult to be TOO extreme when you’re a conservative these days. In a sense what Joe is saying is not all that new. Misogyny runs rampant in Republican ranks (right alongside racism). Joe just upped the ante a bit by actually advocating not just hating women (and lesbians in particular) but raping them too. Republicans already advocate raping their own wives so maybe they don’t see this as a big departure from their existing belief-system.
The rest of us should be alarmed, however, and the more so since we’re not likely to see this clown condemned on FOX or any other media outlet. Joe Rehyansky is an example of why true, universal tolerance is an impossibility, because there will always be those things that cannot be tolerated, and the conservative hatred of women is bad enough. Advocating mass rape is beyond the pale, and even Republicans ought to recognize this. But you can bet you won’t see Sarah Palin go after Joe Rehyansky; she’s too busy accusing Couric of lacking journalistic ethics by asking her what she reads. Compared to that, how do a few raped lesbians even enter the conversation?

that this person said this is and is not a shock. It is a shock because it’s pretty much as you put it, the on the pale to say something like this. On the other hand once I consider where he is from it’s not a shock at all. There is little doubt in my mind this is how he was brought up in this is how he thinks. I’m just shocked that he doesn’t go out of the public and advocate rape of lesbians to be fair game. But on second thought that wouldn’t shock me either.
I too wonder how he could possibly hold any position in government after saying this.

The only time “corrective” and “rape” should be in the same sentence is when speaking of corrective work that must be done to the rapist … not the victim. The kind of so-called thinking displayed by Joe Rehyansky is absolutely repugnant.

I agree, brainwise. Truly disturbing.

Wow. Just when you think they can’t stoop any lower. I’m so glad you wrote this, Hraf. Who can believe it?
Methinks Joe is often caught overestimating his own appeal and influence, as well as that of other Republican men. Just sayin’.

Isn’t he at least a former judge? Is he actually on the bench right now?

My understanding is that he is still a magistrate.

He doesn’t actually advocate rape, though. He suggests that manly male soldiers might woo lesbians into heterosexuality. This is intensely stupid, but it is not a call for corrective rape. You do feminism no favours with such blatant misreading.

Have you seen the rape stats in the military? If you had, then your comment would be a joke. He knows as everyone in the military knows, that women are raped at an appalling rate in the military. This isn’t a “feminist” issue. It’s an issue of humanity and blatant misogyny.

Well said, DC. Thank you.

I’m hardly alone in suggesting that Joe is calling for corrective rape. People are free to draw their own conclusions but to suggest it is a blatant misreading is, I think, itself a blatant misreading. The Daily Caller clearly perceived Joe’s words correctly, or how they would be received, or they would not have first pulled his column entirely, and then put it back up minus the offending words.

For the record, this is Joe’s view of reality: “it fell to men to swing through the trees and scour the caves in search of as many women as possible to subdue and impregnate – a tough job but someone had to do it”

Actually, that is an Rx for ‘corrective rape’. That attitude is not entirely uncommon amongst men of his generation. In the military, when I served, that was not only was that a supposed solution to turn lesbian’s back to heterosexuality, but corrective rape was also used as a way of trying to put strong, straight women back in ‘their places’ too.

The idea that anyone anywhere could call rape “corrective” in any way is the product of a twisted mind. When I think about what any rape victim goes through during and after being violated (sometimes even being murdered), I have to wonder why he is not at least publicly censured for his insensitivity. As far as I’m concerned, he doesn’t deserve to be hired as a dog catcher.
It’s obvious that he was raised with a “boys will be boys” mentality, as well as an antipathy for lesbians. In addition, the word “misogynist” is an apt description, along with the word “neanderthal.” What man who has a healthy respect for women would even consider such a thing, much less advocate it?

Someone should try a bit of corrective rape on him.

It really makes one wonder just how many “corrective” rapes he has performed and how may lesbians he converted to heterosexuals. This guy is a nasty old man and he should not be allowed to have any associations whatsoever with any females, period.

From the Department of Methinks He Doth Complain Too Much – Joes’s breathless comment that “…men who achieve lascivious enjoyment from the sight of those lithe naked bodies, and who may be tempted to seek more than the view…” makes me wonder if you himself might be one of those men. Lithe, naked bodies, all wet and soapy, ooh Joe, does that make you all hard? Closet queen.

I completely disagree with Joseph A. Rehyansky’s thesis; however, I also question the conclusions you drew from the article.
Namely when you say, “Joe thinks the lesbians should be allowed to join the military so that they can be raped into changing into good little heterosexuals. Subdue them with the penis, seems to be Joe’s battlecry. Because what lesbian can resist a penis or ten?”
I did not read anywhere in that article that he Joseph Rehyansky supports corrective rape. Nor anything to support your assertion. Corrective rape is a serious issue, not an insult to throw around when disagreeing with political adversaries. I think you could draw out more relevant issues from his article and deconstruct his poor rhetoritc there–not invent arguments.
