Conservatives and Religious Fanatics Demand that Gay-Hate Remain a Part of Boy Scout Policy
Indoctrination is a process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, cognitive strategies or religious philosophy, and it is clearly distinguished from education because the indoctrinated person is forbidden to question or critically examine the doctrine they have learned. Reasonably, indoctrination is the non-pejorative term for brainwashing, and although nearly every human being can be worn down and “convinced” to adhere to even the most hideous ideology, it is children who are easy prey for propaganda, fear mongering, and indoctrination into a belief system of hate, non-inclusion, and discrimination. It is the responsibility of parent’s to protect their children from learning to hate, and to a lesser degree, it falls on society to set examples of acceptance that are necessary in a community, and yet there are institutions promoting hate and suspicion based on religion that is being taught in schools, homes, and the Boy Scouts of America.
It was reported last month that a Maryland Cub Scout pack posted a non-discrimination policy on its website that contradicted the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) policy against granting membership to gay and lesbian scouts and leaders. Pack 442 was warned if they did not reinstate the ban on gay involvement in scouting, they would lose their charter for 2013 leading pack leaders to attempt to negotiate a rewording of the statement that would represent a compromise, but ultimately the local BSA council’s leadership felt only removal of the statement would be acceptable, and informed the members of Pack 442 that the BSA intolerance policy was non-negotiable and indeed, mandatory. As of January 26, Pack 442 officials posted the following message on the group’s website: “Due to pressure from the National Capital Area Council, Pack 442 is being forced to remove its Non-Discrimination statement posted below in order to keep our Charter.”
Pack 442′s leaders did not post the non-discrimination policy unilaterally; it was voted on (anonymously) and overwhelming approved by Pack families and strongly supported by their chartering organization, the Colesville Lions Club. It was precisely what is necessary to stamp out institutional hatred toward gays, but pressure from parents, churches, and religious leaders threatening to withdraw funding and participation is perpetuating indoctrinating youth into the culture of hate. One may be inclined to cite homophobia as the driving force behind the BSA, and religious, opposition to gays, but as one parent said, “I will pull my boy from Scouts. It won’t be because of ‘fear’ as some ridiculously suggest. I simply don’t approve of the lifestyle,” in other words, it is bigotry borne of religious edict.
After the Boy Scouts of America announced earlier this week they are considering an end to their decades-long ban on gay members, leaving it to regional and local councils to dictate membership guidelines on sexuality, many conservative and religious leaders were livid that the organization was considering abandoning its long-standing commitment to discriminatory biblical principles. The president of the Southern Baptist Convention, Fred Luter, said “If that is what the leadership is doing, then I think it will be a sad day in the life of the Boy Scouts of America, this organization has always stood for biblical principles. This is a tradition that so many of us across the country grew up in, and to see this organization that I thought stood on biblical principles about to give in to the politically correct thing is very disappointing.” Southern Baptists must adhere to a set of Christ’s teachings that were omitted from every edition of the bible except theirs, because not judging, and not discriminating is not a “politically correct thing,” it is a Jesus thing, a human thing, and an American thing, but not an organized religion thing.
Many faith-based organizations suggested they will break financial and membership ties with the Boy Scouts of America if the organization decides to end to their decades-long discrimination against gays by leaving it to regional and local councils to dictate membership guidelines on sexuality. It is still localized discrimination and no doubt, in overwhelmingly fundamentalist states, Southern Baptists and extremist evangelicals will restrict membership to hardline Christian fanatics, and if faith-based groups have their way, they will make sure other localities follows suit. Seventy percent of all Boy Scout troops are sponsored by organizations such as Southern Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, and Mormons, and their financial support could determine whether or not the BSA continues teaching hate against gays. A spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention said, “Churches of all faiths and denominations, including Southern Baptist churches, will be forced to reevaluate whether they can, in good conscience, continue to host Scout troops given that the Scouts appear poised to turn their backs on this clear biblical and moral issue.” In typical hate-group fashion, the extremist religious right resorts to threats to impose their biblical discrimination on young Americans, and as more of the population rejects discrimination, the people can expect more fundamentalist threats to perpetuate their hate, their brand of Christianity, and their dystopian biblical morals on America.
Although the religious fanatics demanding gay-hate remains part of the Boy Scout policy, there is promise in this despicable story. The fact that troop 442′s members and the Colesville Lions Club supported the non-discrimination policy means there are good Christians, and decent human beings, who comprehend that indoctrinating bigotry into the next generation of Americans is not conducive to community, or a country, that values every citizen. In fact, in January, an Eagle Scout candidate’s application that had been rejected because he was openly gay was accepted after a Change.org petition garnered 460,000 signatures, and the young man appeared on nationally televised talk shows relating how the Boy Scouts of America were discriminating against him because he was gay.
America is changing for the better and although there are still parents, church groups, and politicians actively indoctrinating hate in America’s youth toward the gay community in their homes, churches, and legislatures, they are in the minority. As they see their influence waning, Americans can expect more intense pressure to maintain bigotry and hate inherent in fundamentalist Christian ideology, and more attempts to pressure institutionalized bigotry based on an archaic Bronze Age pronouncement. One thing is certain, the gay-hate being defended by religious maniacs and the BSA is not part of the Boy Scout’s motto or any of Christ’s teachings, and fortunately, there are Boy Scouts, service clubs, and “real” Christians who have finally figured it out.

Should I leave? Am I not welcome here? Because I always have completely opposing views of the articles here, but can’t help but comment. Do y’all want me to leave?

Peter you present your views in a manner that doesnt preclude you to being kicked. Anyone who can intelligently present their views, regardless of what they are is welcome

Peter,
Of course not. What is the point of your question? It is the BSA that refuses to accept opposing viewpoints. I accept that some people are homophobic, but I resent that my donations to United Way are helping to fund this viewpoint, and in fact, have not given to my local UW for that reason.

Grow up and stop trying to bait people. Say whatever the hell you want to and stop testing others as if you were still stuck at the 3-year-old stage of emotional development.
Does that answer your question sufficiently clearly?

How about you actually don’t judge my motives? Believe it or not, I know what it’s like to have that “troll” on a comment board that always has opposing views and I know how annoying it gets. So in the spirit of kindness and simple common online courtesy, I was questioning whether or not people wanted me to leave. Quite frankly, I have better things to do than “bait” people on a random online website. So no, it wasn’t a comment coming from a three year old. It was a genuine gesture, and the least you could do would be to respond to it in a sincere way the same.

I want you to leave. I’m not pulling any punches…
You can be as “charming” as you want…I still “smell ya’” even it the others don’t!
I don’t think it’s honest to waste time, space and energy on a sociopaths who get joy from playing with other people’s heads. You said as much in a post on a prior subject…you find acting superior and persistently provoking the comment section of this site with absurd lies as “humorous”, amusing.
As I said before, you are no ordinary troll with an opposing view; you’re way too calculated. I would go as far as saying you “reek” of social manipulation with no regard for others. Agreeing/disagreeing is not what turns “Peter” on; it’s playing with people’s heads.

I think the better question, rather than to say “I believe differently and I’m not open to new ideas,” you should ask yourself WHY are your views so opposing? Are you here merely to make others angry or uncomfortable? Are your comments made in a spirit of love? Are you accepting that other people just might disagree with you and that doesn’t make either you or them evil? I believe that opposing views are vital to a real argument. Sometimes, a line of argument has an unfounded basis that can be easily overturned. Sometimes, real points can be made. But at the end of the day, I will often find myself typing out long responses to articles only to delete them entirely when I’m done because my opinion does not uplift, add to the conversation, or is being spoken in a spirit of love.
Yes, everybody is entitled to an opinion, but you should also be open to new ideas and opposing arguments. Not just you, everybody. If you’re not here with an open mind, being here and commenting will not help your disposition and turn you into a ball of frustration and anger. Nobody wants that.

I don’t see anything in the Boy Scouts’ pledge that mentions “Biblical principles”.
I’d love it if parents would pull their kids
en masse out of the BSA and start their own competitive organization. They could call it “The Smart Scouts” or something like that.

It is rather interesting that the GSA isn’t having these kinds of problems, but it seems the right wing-nuts have problems with girls becoming strong, independent young women, so they took to that organization in a different direction.
Not one child is born hating anyone. It is a purely learned concept, and needs to be challenged and conquered. As far as I know, being former Girl Scout, that was what the organization was about. Being strong, camaraderie, and survival skills. Did the BSA not get the memo?

I have said for a long time now that hate is a learned behavior and that it starts at home. Then it moves to the schools and church. Once we as a species learn to stop hating these things will go away.
everyone reading this should do a little experiment, its simple really……….just watch a room full of six year olds and tell me how much hate you see it just may surprise you

Once upon a time, I considered finding a way to rid society of this “Hater’ation Nation” behavior via a doctorate on the subject. I gave it up…
Once upon a time, I had a project going to help former Klan, neo-Nazis, radical fundamentalist, etc. who left hate groups to talk about how, why, and when they left those group. My hopes; their stories would inspire others to “leave” these subversive groups or churches and find a new life. I gave it up (it was too dangerous)…
6 year old babies are already being recruited and indoctrinate at Jesus Camps as well as encouraged to join “Joel’s Army”.
I like the way you think with such positive tones, but, the solution is not that simple.

I have searched extensively, and I could not find a single comment, statement or word that Jesus ever said or hinted at in any way that homosexuals/gays/lesbians should be condemned in any manner. This hatred, bigotry and condemnation seems to have come from church leaders (men) long after Jesus’s death. If I am wrong, please show where and when Jesus ever mentioned or used the word homosexual or similar. Henry Bornstein

I guess these organizations need to re-evaluate wny they support the BSA. Is it for advertising their religion or is it for the kids.
The number of gay kids in the BSA is probably tiny(I have no facts here). The entire thing is probably overblown to start with.
But this is a wonderful trap for the churches and the conservatives. The southern Baptists for the most part are the American version of the taliban. This allows thinking people to see what their churches vision of who is acceptable and who isnt and decide if they want to stay in that religion of hate.
The conservatives? Oy yes. On the national scene trying to do some image work. But down home in Mayberry still the pie throwing little ball of hate they have always been. And people see it. when people live something its more important then seeing Bob Corker on TV.
If these people are the xtians they say they are, a little introspection is advised. As your self if there is room in a loving gods heaven for you. Right now the answer probably should be no

I used to be one of those ugly, bigoted people…(I am ashamed to say!) Then, one day, I happened to find out that a dearly loved friend, who I regarded as a brother, was gay. When he told me….IT WAS IRRELEVANT …..!! All I saw was love for a friend….IT DID NOT MATTER..! Love was more powerful than hate.!! And the change …was WITHIN MY HEART… I saw LGBTs as HUMAN BEINGS, that they matter, because they are our brothers and sisters, and children…and parents….and we love them. I am a different person now, BECAUSE I CARE… Love won out over hate…and THAT, is real power….!

Dear RockyMissouri: Good for you! Be not ashamed of your former views, for you had every right to hold them. But now your love is a little less limited and you can accept the essential humanity of gays/lesbians and the transgendered (I hope). Save some of that expanded love for yourself. Truly, those who hate others are merely projecting self-hatred outward. Jesus told us, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Only to the extent that we love ourselves do we have love to give to others.

It’s been that way since the 90′s. My son could never get into a troop, so I started asking around, other parents, neighbors etc,. They would say “Don’t you know? You’re not Christians! Nor is the attorney down the street, etc..And, you can forget about the scouts around here if you’re a single parent!” I looked around and it became apparent that they were right. It was a clique based on who went to church…and who didn’t. Calling the local headquarters was futile as I recall…
…So, we formed our own troops comprised of all the “rejects” who weren’t Christian or “sinners”(divorcees).

It still completely shocks me to realize how deep the homophobia resides. Substitute any group other than homosexuals in the hated-on group and watch people recoil in horror at the barbaric cruelty and sanctioned discrimination. One of the best examples of what kind of damage organized religion can do, because this attitude roams freely throughout a bunch of them.

To be fair it was never gay-hate, more like don’t ask, don’t tell. That said the current policy seems more backwards with each passing year and directly conflicts with non-discrimination policies of many chartered organizations, notably Open and Affirming congregations of the United Church of Christ. I’m glad the BSA is reconsidering, but part of me says I’ll believe it when I see it since it was just a few months ago they reaffirmed without discussion the current policy.

I have an extreme aversion to any type/form of discrimination because I remember what it was like growing up under segregation and Jim Crow laws in the South. Because of this experience, I made a decision early in my life to fight against all forms of discrimination, bigotry, misogyny, etc. My thinking is that if I didn’t like being forced to live this way, what would make me think that others would like it? The Golden Rule isn’t only meant to be spoken, it is meant to be a rule to live by. I am very disappointed in Fred Luter, because he was born and raised in the South and knows what it is to be discriminated against. I am also a Christian, but I’ve never felt it was my right to interfere in the lives of others, to condemn them for the way they live, or to impose my beliefs on them. Live and let live works well for me.

Jesus stated in Luke 17 that just before His return to earth as Judge, two big “crazes” will happen worldwide at the same time: (1) insane violence (“days of Noah”), and (2) outrageous sexual perversion (“days of Lot” – see Gen. 19). Aren’t beheadings, cannibalism, and school shootings violent? And what’s more perverted than a mob trying to rape literal angels (see Gen. 19 again)?! So, America, keep spitting on God but you’d better duck when He spits back!! (PS – For a bigger enchilada, Google “when Diversity becomes Perversity.”)

No, Jesus made no such pronouncements – the very human men who wrote the bible, re-translated the bible & changed the words, never whispered in their ears by Gawd did. Your “facts” are merely an opinion backed by nothing.
