Conservatives Revel In Their Racism As They Mock First Lady Michelle Obama
Habituation is one of the simplest forms of learning and, when bad behavior is repeated regularly, it becomes unnoticed and the person exhibiting it has no need for self-analysis that may inform them their habit is harmful. For most of this country’s history, white supremacy was the unequivocal governing ideology, and despite the struggle for civil rights for all Americans and the election of the first African American President in 2008, anti-African American racism is still prevalent in the population and within the conservative movement. Subsequently, it drives most of the opposition to President Obama and by extension, the Democratic Party and sadly, the President’s wife Michelle Obama.
Recently, under cover of protesting so-called federal government meddling in people’s lives, Mrs. Obama’s effort to promote low-calorie school lunches incited a football coach in Alabama to deride the First Lady’s posterior and body shape. The coach in question said, “Those lunches you get, 600-calorie lunches – you know who’s behind that? Fat butt Michelle Obama and look … look at her. She looks like she weighs 185 or 190. She’s overweight.” Another voice says, “Big fat gorilla” to which the coach responded, “I’m serious. Y’all, our country is, is, is going in the wrong direction. It’s going straight to hell.” The criticism of the First Lady’s derriere was the subject of a Rush Limbaugh rant nearly a year ago when he referred to her as “Michelle ‘my butts’ Obama,” and last year a Wisconsin Republican criticized Mrs. Obama’s healthy eating initiative loudly at an airport complaining that, “She lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself.”
In the Alabama coach’s case, the conversation quickly morphed from nutritional school lunches to the First Lady’s derriere to the country’s direction, and it is a sign that the real issue is not Mrs. Obama’s body shape, it is her presence as First Lady that challenges the historic view of a black woman’s, or any African American’s, place in a historically white supremacist culture. Instead of acceptance that America is moving away from a white supremacist society, growing racial resentment is driving extremist conservatism of right-wing Republicans, and plays a major role in their total rejection of President Obama and the Democratic Party regardless the American people support the President’s agenda. Habits, especially old habits, die hard and it explains Republican obstructionism in their attempt to cling to an America dominated by what Senator Lindsey Graham termed, “angry white males.”
In the last election, many Americans and politicians, and the press is implicit in this problem, focused their attention on the plight of white Americans despite their numbers, as a percentage of the population, are decreasing as Hispanics and African Americans are growing in a natural progression in a multi-cultural society. In fact, leading up to the 2012 election, the press was preoccupied with the white vote; the white working class, white women, and wealthy white people and how they would decide the election in favor of Willard Romney. However, Republicans lost part of the white vote because of their racial resentment and extremism that goes against the social conscience of mainstream Americans whose attitudes toward tolerance is becoming the norm and, like decent human beings, are more concerned with fairness and diversity instead of religious extremism and pandering to rich white Americans. America is not changing; it has changed, and as the Republican Party becomes more extreme, and racist, they will find themselves declining in popularity among decent Americans regardless of their race, social, or economic demographic.
Hardline conservatives do not necessarily have a problem with Michelle Obama’s body shape, or her husband’s policies, it is with their race after white supremacy has been the explicit governing ideology throughout this nation’s history. The dominant idea that guided the concept of democracy, and the role of government policy, centered on improving the lives of white people and limiting it for African Americans and Hispanics who were kept out of good schools, good jobs, and decent housing that has shifted among the population that demands equal opportunity for all Americans that President Obama so eloquently championed in his inaugural address.
Many on the left question whether Republicans are inherently racists, and it certainly appears that they are, but the better question is; does racism play any part in their opposition and obstruction to every policy, agenda, and proposal the President supports? The answer is decidedly yes because based on this nations’ long history of white supremacy and discrimination toward African Americans, any other conclusion is absurd and it is due in no small part to the despicably bad habit of governing solely for and by white Americans. When this President appoints Republicans to cabinet level positions, uses Republican ideas for healthcare reform, and leans far to the right on economic policy and still faces obstruction for the sake of obstruction, there is no other explanation other than racial resentment, and that includes mocking a highly popular First Lady because she is First Lady; not because of her derriere.

Well, this certainly hit the nail on the head! After hearing or reading various comments made before, during and after this election, I have come to realize just how racism is so alive in our country. It saddens & angers me how such small-minded people can call themselves God fearing, freedom -loving Americans & then turn around and utter the most disgusting words aimed at the highest person in our government because he is Black! I am glad, however, that the majority of this nation’s voters showed those haters that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated or accepted anymore.

Why didn’t these people go after Barbara Bush this way? Just because she is white, although heavy. My family mostly lives in the UK and is appalled at the treatment the President and his family receive in the press. They see Fox “news” and can not believe the level of disrespect. It has certainly become much worse. Why is it that the gop can not tolerate INTELLIGENT people? Look at the clowns that ran on the repub. ticket last time. Willard refused to release his taxes, and even his own aide likened him to an Etch-A-Sketch. The family values party even got behind Gingrich, the serial adulterer. McCain should have resigned after the fiasco he caused with Palin, the racist.

People like this coach are swimming in vain against the tide of ever-increaasing racial and ethnic diversity. They are also fighting against the loss and even lessening of white privilege, even though many of them consistently vote against their own economic interests in order to maintain that status quo. The president and the First Lady are exemplary human beings who embody the fulfillment of the American Dream with hard work and determination. But because they are African-Americans, the racial prejudice of people like the coach is much stronger than their perception. They have great difficulty even envisioning a world in which a non-white American–particularly a black one–is in a position of such high authority. Because of their mindset, they would much rather have a mediocre or lousy white president than a competent black one. It puts me in mind of something a friend told me years ago. He told me that at this hospital, a black doctor there was the most competent one and in great demand. He also told me a white bigot went there for treatment, but he didn’t want a N-word operating on him. He got his wish because they gave him a white doctor who was mediocre at best. He ended up dying in the operating room. Anyway, I see it as a good analogy for the kind of thinking of folks like this coach who willingly cut off their noses to spite their faces in the name of white supremacy.

I witnessed a similar incident of a white woman yelling she wasn’t going to have a “N” in her room. I was shocked thinking this top doc, most thorough and inquiring of colleagues’ patients was loudly ordered to “get, git outta room…punctuated with the N word.
People taught to hate, have limited thinking e.g. complete derogation and banishment. Such people do not consider, think nor believe are human beings taught to hate convinced nonwhites are subhuman, denying an entire race human qualities. Hence the degrading assignations to animals.
The tragedy is that brainwashing for race supremacy prohibits interactions with nonwhites to know the human qualities and competencies of them. The hatred and inherent ignorance is passed on generation to generation.

Anne thank you for this post, as it reminded me of an episode of “The Archie Bunker Show”. I believe that was the one, where there was this old white guy brought into an emergency room and needed an immediate blood transfusion. Turns out George Jefferson was already in hospital and turns out he was the man’s blood type. Without an immediate transfusion he would have died. When he finally was revived he as told how he was saved. The doctors, expecting thanks were blown away when the man looked at them and said, “You should have let me die.” George was the only one unsurprised by the response.
They are becoming a very sad people, very hard to feel sympathy for.

Absolutely politics and racism are a big factor in their criticisms of Michelle Obama. Another issue is the freedom that these misogynistic males (dare I say, fat white males) feel they have to discuss a woman’s body shape or looks and to deride her for it (Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi). It is another case where a woman’s worth is seen through the prism of her presentation. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that these three women are some of the smartest women in the room, yet if a Democrat were to impugn the looks of Virginia Foxx for instance (not the brightest star in the sky), the smelling salts would come out. When these men fail to make an intelligent case against a woman’s position, they literally make fun of her looks, just like they were still in middle school.

Another problem Republicans have with Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton/Nancy Pelosi: they are highly intelligent, educated, professional women who don’t need a man to define their identity. Hillary was the first First Lady who had had her own career, even after she was married, and she was proud of it. The Republicans couldn’t dream enough insults for her. Michelle has compounded the offense by being Black.

Some women, regardless of race, have a broad pelvic girdle, which means the guitar-shaped rear view does not go away even in a state of starvation, and such women exist in all ethnic groups: I know, because I am one, and was one even when I weighed 105 lbs soaking wet (and I’m white). In the ordinary case, it makes for greater ease in childbearing. Furthermore, men whose views have not been warped by racism and fashionmodelism find this backline enticing. If it were a white Republican first lady with Michelle Obama’s figure, you’d hear either nothing but praise for her “womanliness” or nothing at all.

@Reynardine, your words remind me of my stepdaughter (white) who has 7 children. She is a natural. A mother like no other. At times she worries aloud about her midsection and, once, in a moment of inspiration (I guess), I responded: “you mean those beautiful, made-for-babies buns?” Made her day, her self-esteem has shot through the roof, and I’ve not heard her complain aloud about it again since.
Our first lady is sterling, as is her husband. We are very blessed to have them in the White House at these momentous times in our nation’s history. There is a calmness and assuredness that they bring, and have really steadied the mood f the nation from the hairy days of the Bush years – the uncertainty surrounding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the constant fear we felt with color codes and the like. Slowly, but surely, THIS PRESIDENT (with Michelle’s help, of course) has helped us off that knife’s edge existence. If only the obstructionists will get out of the way and allow the economy to boom!

This hits the nail on the head but not for the reasons alleged. First, moderate Republicans (like Gen. Powell) and Libertarians (like myself), disagree with left leaning policy not the color of skin. To paint every Republican with such a broad brush is intellectually dishonest.
However, the author is spot on in the assertion that the hardline social conservatives hold this resentment for a strong woman asserting herself into causes that are important to Americans and then they add in her race making the hatred grow even more.
Our (yes OUR) First Family is THE example of the typical two parent household with a strong, devoted and faithful father and husband with a strong, intelligent, compassionate, caring mother and wife doing every thing possible to place their children above career. Many of us single and married, could take some cues from this great family. It is perhaps the closest example to the typical American family of any President since JFK.
Everyone is quick to point to the South to identify it with its racist past and to claim that racism is still the status quo. However, people in the South have lived in an integrated society much longer than any other segment of the nation. As such, they have embraced diversity because they saw others not like them as actually being very much like them. When getting into the rural areas of the Northeast and Midwest these racist attitudes are just as strong or stronger than they are in the South. Just look at the hardline conservative Facebook pages and read the comment threads while looking at where these posters are from to see where my observations are spot on.
I disagree with MY POTUS on issues, not on personality. Ms. Obama is as graceful and charming as any of her predecessors and in some cases even more so. No, I know what he’s talking about. I’ve been to cracker food restaurants and soul food restaurants, and it’s the same damned food. Black and white populations didn’t live together in amity or equality, but they lived together. You saw more people of the other race walking through a W. T. Grant’s or a Quick Check or a Food Fair than you, as a white person, would if if you spent a few years walking up and down (say) State Street. You knew about shit like dropping a doughball from a bamboo line into a lake or canal for catfish, and how if you did it with a cane pole, they wouldn’t get you for no fishing license. You knew you could put your ear to the bottom of a rowboat and hear the shellcrackers crunching little molluscs, and drop that same line for them. You knew about the patience of collard plants, or the lore of backyard chickens (and that a gray fox can climb trees and fences to get them). You knew a dropper was the best dog for upland birds, because it dropped with its nose pointing at the bird and you could fire over it. And that roofs should be tin or white, to keep the inside cooler, and you should shake out your shoes in the morning, in case of palmetto bugs or scorpions, and how to whip up some cathead biscuits…there was a lot of stuff to talk about, once you made up your mind to start. The thing that mattered was to start.

The south has been diversified longer, but the white southerners have alsways viewed their counterparts as being lesser than them. You may remember they fought a war to keep those people less than them.
I am a midwesterner who spent the worst two years of my life living in the south. We had planned on relocating there permanently, but after 18 months of the kind of bigotry that permeates the people, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough though we had to sell the house and make arrangements to leave.
I was asked by a 7-11 employee one morning, in deference to my “accent”, if I was a Yankee, a d*** Yankee, or a g** d*** Yankee. I asked him to tell me the difference and a customer piped up with it. The first is someone that isn’t a southerner who is visiting. The second is someone, like the military, who is living there temporarily. The third, “the worst of all” according to the speaker, moved there on purpose to stay. By then, I was loosing patience with the treatment of “minorities”, I answered that I must be the second because I had no designs on permanency.
Racist is as racist does and MUCH of the GOP is racist.

I have lived in Tennessee for around 12 years now, out of Michigan. In the area that I live(Knoxville) there are a ton of people from Michigan here. So I have never ran into any problem with people treating me as less than a citizen. In fact I have found the large majority of the southern people here very welcoming.
For diversification I think you have to look to the North. Since before the Civil War the North was highly industry aligned while the South was more of a farming type of place.
My dad constantly asked me to move back to Michigan but there is absolutely nothing there for me except for my family. And I certainly love Tennessee for the beauty I find

I’m a Black female, gregg, one who lived under segregation for the first 18 years of her life. I know racism when I see it. I’m better at recognizing it than you’ll probably ever be, because I’ve experienced it my whole life. Would these same people have been as opposed to a President Clinton? No, some of the things they’ve said and done to this president they would have never said/done to HRC. For example, they would have never photo-shopped her to depict her as a tribal witch doctor or shouted out “You lie!!!” during a speech she was making before a national and international audience. These things demonstrate a lack of respect that has its’ basis in the racial history of this country. One can deny the existence of racism in America in the 21st Century, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t mean that those who speak out against it are “haters.”

I really think that in the case of Michelle Obama the racism is secondary – the big objection isn’t her blackness, it’s her female-ness. As a woman I can tell you that we have to put up with comments like that from men every day. Every goddamn day. No matter what a woman’s accomplishments, in the end, a woman’s worth is reduced to whether or not a guy would “hit it”.
The reason they pick on her so much is because her cause is so controversial – childhood obesity. My god, she might as well have said she was going to take away their guns. No one gives her grief about her other cause – wives and families of military men – that one is acceptable. I think both Bush wives promoted reading – not too much to fear there. Nancy Reagan’s contribution after rubbing her two brain cells together for 8 years in the White House was “just say ‘No’” to drugs. She was hailed for her brilliance.
But for Michelle Obama to even suggest that parent’s should forego the Cheetos and provide some carrots for their kids is obviously the first step on the road to tyranny… First they come for the high fructose corn syrup, then the guns!

Michelle Obama is a beautiful black woman and the FLOTUS. All the back wood repubs and tea baggers need to get over yourself. The coach and whom ever else says such things about the Obamas, is straight up rasist…and should be released from there public positions. So pathetic, ignorant and shameful.

I remember an interview with both of them summer 2008 and Mrs. Obama was asked if she worried that her husband would be assassinated because he is back. She said, paraphrasing, that they both discussed it and it was no different than walking down the streets of Chigago on any day, anyone can be shot dead, but they wanted to try to make this country better.
She is a BEAUTIFUL woman and those that call or photoshop her a monkey, well, what can I say? Defines them more than her.

Don’t fret. They may occur just occasionally right now, but once the Repubs eliminate the Department of Education, he/she/it will have lots of company.

One thing to remember is that we are even talking about it, is progress. When its hidden and kept secret, nothing changes.

Coming from hicks, big bellies gun toting and tobacco smoking mental midgets should not be worthy of discussion. These people will never change and the more publicity they have, the better they feel about themselves. This evilness and hatefulness are a big part of their lives. They grew up with this nonsense. Michele is a beautiful intelligent woman and they can not stand that she is in the house that slaves built. They hate Obama more because he does not shuck and jive, scratch his head and say, “Yasser Boss”. They can stew, get sick and suffer for all many of us care.

bolly, why are you not claiming England? The King threw your carcass out because he felt you were not good enough to be there and you came to this nation, and did the same thing that the king did to you. Maybe that was genocide…

Can’t understate what an embarassment to our brothers and sisters who just happened to have been born Caucasion. Exactly as I can’t say a thing about slavery. I was not born to this sad deal our forefathers had and practiced back then. We try to do the right thing but, I still don’t understand about God and the guns connection to the Tea Party movement. Yes, the GOP is on the pea-brained alley towards Tea Party wrecklessness and bigotry. All of us aren’t inclined nor raised to be hateful to someone of a different skin color. Does this help our country? Do we all, as people at the bottom half of the economic ladder have to suffer because our President was duly elected by the majority of the American people?

This country cant heal the horror of slavery until the bandage on the wound has been opened and the last vestige of the pus has been removed. Both integration by law and Hollywood have put many more white people into contact with people of color. For much of America it has become declasse to speak or be overtly racist. But, like pus, it has been simmering just under the surface and has erupted with the election of President Obama. The band-aid has been ripped off. The gut wrenching ugliness of racism is exposed. And it has turned a great many people off to those who espouse the filth and those who wont denounce as people express their disgust by ballot and by boycott.
A word on how to speed the healing. My white parents had black friends. So when I joined the civil rights movement it was because it hurt my heart that my parents friends Irene and Jack Jackson could be treated unjustly, not just because of unknown “others”. It was very personal. I think the revolution in LGTB rights is directly due to the decision to “come out” and suddenly all the people who said “I dont know any gay people” ….. did. It became personal, it was their daughter, their son who was being denied rights, including the right to love, marry and form a family. It was brave of the LGTB to risk so much. When the vast majority of white Americans know, have broken bread with and count a person(s) of color as a friend, then being offended by racist filth will also be personal.

I love the First Lady! But – I do disagree with her school breakfast and lunch policy. 600 calories TOTAL isn’t enough for kids, especially the 16% of children who don’t have food at home.
Reynardine
Feb. 10th, 2013 at 11:21 pm
In most cases, kids shouldn’t have their calories monitored, but rather the kinds of foods they get them from: milk, meat, fruits, vegetables, whole grains. And then they should have recess twice a day, and enough of a break after lunch to go out and play then, too.

Now when do they do school work and the teacher gets to teach? Plenty of outside time detailed, but not enough in school work to balance the time. If you mean field work combined with in-class learning that’s another thing.

600 Calories is alot of food
Breakfast: www.ihop.com/menus/main-m...
This is IHOPS kid’s menu for breakfast and lunch and they are all under 600 calories. The amount of food is significant.
We fat ass Americans have grown accustomed to “supersized” this that and the other we feel that we are being cheated eating the “right-size” amounts. Amazing.
Check out the amount of food and understand that the people complaining about the 600 calories are the same people that want the lunch ended/cut from the budget.

I think there is some very deep seated jealousy growing their hatred. They cannot stand to think that the White House is being inhabited by Black Folks since for so long Black Folks only entrace to the White House was through the servants’ doors. What they really can’t stand is that the President and Mrs. Obama are both brilliant people in their own arenas, each contributing their best for the nation. The racists’words, actions, obstructionism are despicable. The Obamas are here to show us that change is inevitable and good. God Bless Them.

I don’t give a fig about the president’s color.i do however have major issues with just about everyone of his policies. I am a constitutional and fiscal conservative, I support the views of Dr. Benjamin Carson, this deficit is unsustainable.

So you support austerity that is now proving around the world that it doesnt work
There is no such thing as a constitutional conservative.
Melissa
Feb. 11th, 2013 at 8:43 am
You can’t be a constitutional conservative as long as you think an oil company who made $34 BILLION in clear profit in one quarter deserves $10 billion a year in corporate welfare. You can’t be a constitutional conservative when you think that the BEST way to balance the budget and rid ourselves of the deficit is to continue to spend the vast majority of our resources on building a bigger, better, faster military, while simultaneously starving our children, neglecting our elderly and disabled AND our veterans at the expense of corporate greed. We’ve had enough weapons since the l980′s to annihilate the entire world. We need to be fiscally conservative by tending to our people. No one would be stupid enough to invade the United States. We need our priorities to be more in tune with keeping America on the right track. So far, I haven’t seen a single Republican who is remotely interested in doing this.

In the South, the integration of Hispanic, African American and Anglo culture has helped to move people out of the Jim Crow era. We are by no means where Dr. King intended for us to be but we are taking steps daily to achieve his dream. It took 258 years to eliminate slavery and another 99 years to achieve a true Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act thanks to a tall Texan (LBJ).
However, the farther one gets away from urban and suburban areas in the north, midwest and south, the more over racism exists unfortunately. In the rural areas Anglos have trued to keep minorities out of their tight knit communities up until about 15 years ago. Now they have to deal with race after avoiding and ignoring it for years and they feel their grip slipping and they do not like it. But it is societal evolution. It was bound to happen. Marx talks about how the lower classes eventually rise up within a country to assume their rightful place among their brothers and sisters regardless of race, religion, gender, orientation or ethnicity. We must help those with closed minds to open them through love rather than hate. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
The poster above who said the band aid has been yanked off is right and there will be some pain but not enough that we can not handle it. This is not a time for divisiveness but a time to come together and draw from our diversity rather than separating ourselves.

There may be hope for future generations in terms of racial equality. For instance, my daughter, who goes to a multicultural school had a mock election for the 2012 Presidency. Every child in her class (32) voted for Obama. Made my heart sing. The kids in her school are from all over the world because of the proximity to a major university. There are 64 countries represented. This is the melting pot of the U.S. The day will come when these children will be the voters and the change-makers.

People need to realize that no human( no matter the color of your skin) is superior. GOD and JESUS are the only ones who are Superior. If you don’t agree with Mrs. Obama that we need to be fit, then stay fat and out of shape. You will eventually have a stroke heart attack or some major illness. don’t fault her for having the body she has it seems as though those making these comments wonder why their female don’t have the butt or body she has (work at it like she does). There is no need for all this disrespect that is going on towards President Obama and Mrs. Obama. I have come to the conclusion that those speaking negatively against them feel threatened. Both of the Obamas have more education and common sense than ALL the ones disrespecting them and they are stricking out negatively. No other president has been so disrespected nor has his wife. Just because he is Africian-Americans all this is going on. You who are being disrespectful are STUCK ON STUPID. Get over it!!! Check those former presidents and their wives and you will see that they were much worst. You don’t have to go that far back in History. And nothing was said by theseso called white supremist. Don’t let a person skin color deter you from supporting them.
