Coroner’s report tells different story than South Carolina Law Enforcement
Here are snippits from an upstate South Carolina Letter to the Editor reacting to an article written by a local reporter about the parents of the two young men who were fatally gunned down after being suspected of preparing to break into an apartment. I’ve written 4 previous stories on the incident, this will be my 5th.
The writer made himself clear up front. “I was completely unable to muster any pity for the poor families of these criminals who were killed in the act of a violent crime.” He lumped an individual who did brandish a weapon in a restaurant robbery and was shot to death by a customer in with the two young men I’ve been writing about who were no threat to anyone. They were standing by an apartment window, probably preparing to break in when a resident of the apartment drove up, alighted from his car and shot them both in the head. But in hang ‘em high South Carolina, no distinctions are drawn.
“In order to allow my children to continue sleeping, or eating their food, this individual must die or be forcibly put down. The article seemed to me to portray the act of defending yourself with deadly force as an act that creates more victims. I beg to differ. The original crime creates all the victims.” There are a few more lines essentially of the same tenor.
The earth is intellectually flat in South Carolina. There are no objective curvatures of introspection, inquiry, sypmpathy or alternatives. It’s purely black and white when it comes to gunning down ‘bad’ guys. There are no goober epiphanies – ever!
But the dear parents of the two victims that I’ve been describing in my writings soldier on. And they’re making progress in trudging this symbolic 80-degree grade of hate, ignorance, political propaganda and a sheriff whose life’s goal is to excuse every shooting of a ‘criminal’ no matter how trivial or non-threatening the crime. He’s been pretty successful thanks to an adoring, gun-nut pubic and generous state statutes. In less than 4 months, there have been 9 homicides in the county, 4 ruled justified. A lawyer’s wife unnecessarily shot another guy in the face for squatting in their empty house. He somehow survived or more than half of the shooting deaths would have been ‘justified’. There were but 11 homicides in all of 2011.
Since my last submission, the mother of one of the dead subjects has been on a wonderful radio show, Countdown with Dwayne and Sly on 103.3 ‘Spin’ FM, WOLT. I also appeared with her on the Mother’s Day show hosted by Dwayne and Sly, who are two highly gifted and insightful broadcasters. Dwayne was the lone host for this day and his questions were sensitive and relevant. All in all a wonderful success as Dwayne has pledged both host’s ongoing support and help.
There were also 2 lengthy local newspaper articles. One was headlined, Waffle House shooter (meaning the citizen who killed the would-be armed robber) speaks out. That was a Mother’s Day feature. Monday, a second piece appeared entitled “Officials differ on self-defense law.” The mom and dad featured in my series were prominently displayed in a large front-page picture with smaller pics of their son and cousin. The articles were by and large sympathetic to the parents painting their son as a positive and thoughtful young man.
That brings me to the astonishing denouement for this series of submissions. I have in my possession a copy of the autopsy reports for both young men. Monday, May 15, the families of the two victims met with the County Coroner. The families invited me along so I and went to the coroner’s office as well. I was quickly (and politely) told that I would not be allowed to sit in on the conversation. The excuse was that there might be grizzly pictures. As an orderly years ago, I’d seen many bodies in battered states from accidents, fires, car crashes – you name it. Besides, I could have easily excused myself and left the office during those periods that the families were viewing the photos. As it turned out they declined to look at them anyway. No, the coroner didn’t want an outsider asking embarrassing questions.
I was immediately sent a copy of the reports. They make law enforcement look for all the world like they’re trying to hide something. The sheriff has been trying to sell the snake oil of some kind of imminent fear of death. The solicitor said the very fact the 2 young men separated and wore gloves and one had a crumpled up ski mask on top of his head and they separated seeking protection behind two outdoor A/C units proved that the other guy was in deadly peril. Authorities said one of the young men had a gun ‘near’ him. It was in his pocket, never to exit that pocket.
But this is what should blow this case wide open. Here are some revealing sentences in the dry language of the Forensic Pathologist who performed the autopsy. Under ‘Description of Gunshot Wound:’ A single gunshot wound appears in the right anterior forehead 1.0 inch from the top of the head and 1.0 inch to the right of the midline just superior to the hairline on this side. The path of this gunshot wound appears to be downward at approximately 35 degrees, to the left at approximately 30 degrees, and front to back. Author’s note: the shooter would have to be standing above the victim, execution-style, for such an angle to be possible.
Finally, Microscopic examination of the hemorrhagic tissue at the calvarial entrance would revealed relatively large amounts of non-polarizable foreign material consistent with powder and soot residues which are indicative of a LOOSE CONTACT gunshot would. Author’s note: simply defined that’s when the muzzle is held lightly against the skin. That’s how close the shooter was to one of the victims. A sheriff’s investigators looked me in the eye and said they had no idea how close that shooter was.
Under ‘Description of Gunshot Wound’ for the younger victim, the autopsy report reads as follows: A gunshot wound appears in the right frontal area of the scalp near the anterior hairline 2.0 inches from the top of the head and 1.5 inches to the right of midline. The path of this gunshot would appear to be downward at approximately 60 degrees, right to left at approximately 20 degrees, and back to front. Imminent fear of death? (see below).
In my opinion that’s another stone-cold execution. There is no other explanation. And if I read ‘back to front’ correctly, there is no way on earth that the shooter could have felt threatened. Interesting development as I do a bit of editing before you see this. As of 4:45, Tuesday, May 15th, the mother I’ve been supporting all this time called to tell me that there was a mistake on the coroner’s report. The coroner called her and said ‘back to front’ should have read ‘front to back’. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but that’s a damn serious mistake should this case be reopened.
Stand your ground and the Castle Doctrine have to be modified or eliminated all together. Nobody has a right to sentence petty criminals to death just so the gun nuts can get their rush from killing somebody.

This unfortunate, and deliberate tragedy is not unique. In California, there has been a rash of off-duty police shootings and they were all vindicated; even two who shot unarmed women in their own homes. It is in part because of police malfeasance and law enforcement telling people to arm themselves. The District Attorney refuses to investigate the officer-involved shootings and Internal Affairs always claims justifiable homicide. It a nationwide return to the wild west and no-one is safe.

All else being equal, you’re safer if you aren’t trying to break in to a residence. Arguably the “dear parents” in this case should have taught that to their children.

That is true if you’re actually performing that action. There is no doubt these guys were going to break into the house, but they were not breaking into the house at the time they were shot. The person who shot them had plenty of time to call the cops and have them caught red-handed. You can use this same scenario to shoot anyone that you assume are going to commit a crime.
There was no excuse for this guy shooting these people, especially since we now know they were shot execution style

Shooting across a yard and managing to get two perfect head shots with a strange angle downward indicates a magic bullet here.
You are correct, this guy executed these two people. And should be in prison.

That is why the law should be enforced and NOT ELIMINATED.
It wasn’t “Stand your Ground”, and completely unjustified. It was murder, plain and simple. Self-defense doesn’t have a thing to do with it. (Although I have little sympathy for thieves, you don’t just execute them.)
You scare me. With the attitudes reported in this country… the erosion of freedom with dominionists working to undermine the constitution, and the danger posed by the pigs (which you allude to)… why would you want to take away a law that protects you from them when you have to defend yourself? Insist on the law being properly applied, for God’s sake!!!
I mean… you talk about the pigs covering something up but at the same time you’re talking about changing or eliminating a law that protects us from them if things go really bad!!!
They aren’t the “Good Guys”… they’re best described as unpredictable predators! They don’t care about you… they only care about obedience and your being submissive to authority. That should be obvious to anyone who has to deal with them!
Yeah, the law isn’t being evenly applied, but at least it’s there (and we need to go after those who don’t apply it evenly as much as after those who try to misuse it).
I don’t want to go back to where you pretty much throw away your life by defending yourself, even in the most dire of situations!

You don’t get to shoot back at cops… this is not protecting us from the police, this is setting up tons of scenarios for them to justifiably kill you for defending yourself.

Wrong interpretation and not what I’m saying at all. I am NOT saying shoot at cops… that law protects us from the pigs if we have to shoot some monster who invaded our house with, shall we say, less than healthy plans for the inhabitants.
Or maybe some stupid drunk decides his (abused) girlfriend is in your house and proceeds to try to break down the door while making dire threats because you’re supposedly sheltering her. (That last actually happened to us… a loaded gun kept the jackass at bay and convinced him that he wasn’t going to search our house and that he’d better get his noisy truck out of our front yard.) If the pigs found out about that last, they’d probably arrest ME (even though just displaying the gun and telling the half-drunk redneck I’d shoot him if he didn’t leave prevented worse problems), rather than be concerned about the asshole drunk who was hunting his girlfriend.
Or let’s say we interfere when some grown jackass is beating some young woman half to death – and the jackass decides to attack us as well. Would it be right for the pigs to arrest us because we used a pistol to back down the bully? (Again, happened but not reported because of the attitudes I’ve experienced from the pigs.)
They care nothing about ordinary citizens. They only care about the status quo and those it benefits… the rich. Before “Stand your ground”, any self-defense meant probable arrest and jail time – unless you’re a favored elite.

I should have said that this law is SUPPOSED TO protect us from the pigs.
It’s become quite evident that the usual status quo is being relatively maintained… differential application of the law based on race and money is clearly taking place.

This is tragic all the way around. I sympathize for the families. It’s my greatest fear to lose one of my children. It is for that very reason these would be burgers would probably be just as dead at my house. If I came home, and saw two people standing outside my daughters window, and I thought they were breaking in, I would do everything in my power to protect my kids. Period. A gun. A bat. A rake. If these would be burglers weren’t dead after the encounter, it wouldn’t be because I didn’t try. The reason this is getting ZERO play nationally is because you can’t sell two armed burglers in ski masks as “victims”. You are wasting your time. This is a horrible tragedy, but it was brought on by two people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. If they had been at home asleep or playing Yatzee they would have been ok. They made a mistake, and unfortunately paid with their lives. Leave the family to mourn in peace.

Dan, from what it sounds like to me, the author is describing the shooter as hunting around the OUTSIDE of the house to find each victim cowering behind an AC unit. Then executing them while standing right over the top with his gun pressed to the kid’s head.
All things considered, are we even sure they were trying to break into his house? How do we know the one guy even actually had the ski mask loosely on his head as described? Are we sure it wasn’t added after the fact, while the story of self-defense was being created?

So, ALEC, the gun lobby and REPUBLICANS have allowed a licensed to kill blacks without punishment.
Wow. It makes me sick.

Even under the old “Cracker Hello” scenario, which preceded “Stand Your Ground” by over a century, the dead man had to have his wounds *in front*. This smells on the face of it.
(For those not familiar with the “Cracker Hello”, I recommend Theodore Pratt’s “Florida Roundabout”. Basically, it meant that for you to get off scot free, the victim had to be found in the position of entering your threshhold, with all wounds in front. Consequently, the practice when a woman had a violent abuser pounding on the door was for her to suddenly rip the door open and shoot him as he fell through it).

That’s almost what the pigs always said, except that the person had to be INSIDE the house, a weapon had to be in his/her hand or demonstratively dropped by him/her, and there had to be some sort of evidence that the person meant to harm or kill the inhabitants.
Bullet wounds in the front too.

You know, what I don’t understand is how cold some people can be! These young men were MURDERED! The shooter was standing directly over them both when he placed the barrel of that gun directly to their heads and fired! Who does that? And twice in the same night?? Dennis, you have been gracious enough to put the facts from the coroner out. Mr. Tedwr: HOW DARE YOU? What you know is what was in the media, THAT IS ALL! whose to say the parents didn’t teach their children? Some people are so simple-minded this day and age that they don’t value life! Standing outside a person’s apartment (where there is no proof other than the shooter’s word) warrants the death sentence? Really??
