Was It the Day Mitt Romney Lost the Election? Round Up of Reaction to 47% Mittmockle
By: Sarah JonesSep. 18th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Was it the day Romney lost the election? That’s one of the reactions to Mitt Romney’s 47 percent tape.
Forbes wonders if it was political suicide? “Political suicide? I’ll leave it to the pundits to analyze the impact Romney’s comments will have on his election prospects. (It should be noted, however, that while Romney does have an edge among high-income voters, billionaire Warren Buffett is hardly the only rich guy supporting the Democratic incumbent. See Millionaire Towns For Obama.)”
A round up of reactions to Romney’s Mittmockle:
AP: “Already scrambling to steady a struggling campaign, Republican Mitt Romney confronted a new headache Monday.”
Bloomberg’s Josh Barro: “This is an utter disaster for Romney.”
NY Times’ Paul Krugman: “The idea that half of Americans are just grifters is grotesque. If this is real, it’s very, very ugly.”
Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart: “What the Republican presidential nominee said is reprehensible and unbecoming a man who claims to want to be president of all Americans.”
Slate’s Dave Weigel: “This is Tea Party rhetoric churned into something new and stupid.”
TPM’s Josh Marshall: ” It’s rare when the impact of some gaffe or embarrassment or revelation isn’t overstated on first blush. But this strikes me as possibly that rare exception. This tape strikes me as absolutely devastating.”

Romney on the 47 percent seems a stereotype of an unsympathetic venture capitalist–going to be hard to overcome among non-base voters.

Ex-GWBush ad-maker McKinnon: Romney fund-raiser tape “potentially crippling”
@JohnJHarwood
Dem pollster Garin on Romney fund-raiser tape: “Reinforces impression he’s mistake/prone & arrogant. would be better off if he apologized”
Pres. Obama Campaign National Co-Chair Strickland: “Well, it wasn’t a bump in the road, it was a deep chasm, in my judgment. And quite frankly, what the Governor said is very significant because it reveals something about his value system. For him to speak with such disdain about so many Americans and he wants to be our President? Some of those people that he was talking about, Soledad, are soldiers that are risking their lives at this very moment in Afghanistan. Some of those people he was talking about in such a disdainful way are older people. ow can this man who wants to be president talk in such a disdainful way about half of the American people, and then hope to pull this country together and to be our president. This man apparently feels that if you’re not a part of his social class or you don’t have his economic status, that somehow you’re a parasite.”
And you shouldn’t miss “Today, Mitt Romney Lost the Election” at Bloomberg by Josh Barro. A taste: “Romney already has trouble relating to the public and convincing people he cares about them. Now, he’s been caught on video saying that nearly half the country consists of hopeless losers.”
I saved David Frum’s lament for last: @davidfrum “If you’re not running for president of all the country, you won’t be elected president of any of it.” and, “The policy problem is that the Romney campaign offers nothing but bad news to hardpressed Americans and the broader middle class.”
Mitt Romney used to be the man you thought had to be better in person, among friends and family, than he was campaigning. Turns out, he’s much, much more cynical, nasty and clueless than his stiff persona leads you to believe.

And yet, even from supporters such as David Brooks at the NYT, we get this at the conclusion of a critical commentary about Romney’s secret video: “Personally, I think he’s a kind, decent man who says stupid things because he is pretending to be something he is not — some sort of cartoonish government-hater. But it scarcely matters. He’s running a depressingly inept presidential campaign. Mr. Romney, your entitlement reform ideas are essential, but when will the incompetence stop?”
Why does he continue to give him the benefit of the doubt? If Romney feels this way, fine. Just don’t run for president. But don’t pretend that despite these attitudes he’s a nice guy. I’m sure Ted Bundy was a nice guy too, except when he was, you know, serially killing people.

Yup–I’ve always said that murderers & rapists have friends & family too. Somehow that doesn’t make everything OK.

This isn’t the first time he has uttered such contemptuous words about the poor and middle class. Remember, he likes to fire people. I don’t know how people can overlook what he says and keep supporting him. Especially when he says them over and over and over again. Maybe in not quite the same words, but the meaning is loud and clear. At least to me it is.

So I looked up some numbers. Total U.S.population is near 312 million. Of that number, 23.7% are over 65, 13.3% are under 18. That’s 37% of the population that isn’t employed only because of age. It doesn’t include anyone unemployed because of health issues or a shut-down economy.
Ok, so really, Mitt’s just ignoring the 10% who are unemployed because of health or the economy. He’s just wrong about the number–he thinks there’s 47%–of those lazy good for nothings who flat refuse to take responsibility for anything and get up out of their hospital beds and go to work at their closed factories.
Like he said, if he were Latino his chances would be better, so I guess he thinks that 10% must be mostly Hispanic. I dunno.

He can be summed up in that *certain smile*. That needs to be plastered all over with each and every one of his vile quotes.

So condescending and elitist, very unstatesmanlike and to think it was uttered by a man running for president…

Speaking of not paying taxes; Mittens? Where are the tax returns?

Yes, Stitch. Where are the tax returns, Mitt?
My household pays far more than 13.9% in federal income taxes and we’d like to know why Mitt feels entitled to hide his money in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.
Oh, and Mitt, we’ve NEVER been on any form of government assistance, we work for our paychecks. We’re NOT in the “47%” and we’re proudly voting for President Obama!

The republicans are running very confident in spite of Romney’s remarks–any of them all of them! Because they know THEY ARE STEALING THE ELECTION AS WE SPEAK..they think ITS IN THE BAG just like Sarah and McCain thought…”they’ll never let that black man in the WH” so they thought..no need to even try and look intelligent or offer anything remotely suggestive TO OUR MORONIC GOP CONSTITUENCY–THEY FALL FOR US EVERYTIME! WE HAVE IT IN THE BAG! Well turns out the electorate that I thought was not paying attention WAS IN FACT PAYING ATTENTION! I assure you…we will be putting the black guy in the WHITE HOUSE again! Because the GOP is not ashamed of their proud hate for anyone remotely NOT RICH or worth at least middle class income of $250,000..as Mitt said. Anyone under that number..you ARE NOTHING BUT A PARASITE SMOOCHER. ROMNEY CONDEMNED the very Americans they send to die for their lies (and now the VETS feel entitled???) then blame this president because he wants to end THEIR WARS OF PROFIT FOR PRIVATE CONTRACTORS. It never was NOR WILL IT VER BE ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE GOP. Who are you people on the right who are still out there cheering Romney after his remarks of all of us being bums living off entitlements. Me and my husband make $150,000 combined income..taxed at 37% annually. We have worked all our lives except when he was laid due to Reaganonmics!..How dare you mitt the twitt greedy money hungry romney! how dare you!!!! WE ARE AMERICA! WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT WANT YOU IN OUR WHITE HOUSE! WE HAVE SPOKEN JUST LIKE THE UK!!!!

God help us all if this jerk Mitt gets elected.
He is incapable of connecting with the American people. How can he? He’s got the personality of a wet dish rag.
Half of what he sputters he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Somebody here called him Mitt the Twit.

Shoozy – Mitt the twit is Romney’s nickname in the British press, Britain is 100% behind Obama, they follow politics closely, perhaps even more than most americans, one thing they6 can spot very easily is a fraud!
