A Former Fundamentalist Decodes Michele Bachmann’s Marriage Vow Pledge
Michelle Bachmann has endorsed “The Marriage Vow: A Declaration of Dependence upon MARRIAGE and FAMiLY” – a misogynistic political policy document by THE FAMiLY LEADER, a federally-funded public advocacy organization associated with Focus On The Family.
In signing The Marriage Vow, Bachmann has pledged to promote the “Recognition that robust childbearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial health and security.”
In other words: More American babies equals political and economic domination for the U.S.
But what if “robust childbearing” impinges on an individual woman’s “economic, strategic and actuarial health and security”? What if managing a passel of kids is detrimental to an individual woman’s psychological and/or physical well-being? What if prolific reproduction threatens the lives of women?
Bachmann and THE FAMiLY LEADER offer one simple reply: Woman, Get Over Yourself!
A quick visit to THE FAMiLY LEADER’s website reveals the self-abnegation ideal which is expected of American women according to their “FAMiLY values” paradigm. Notice that in THE FAMiLY LEADER logo, in The Marriage Vow document, and throughout their website, the “I” in FAMiLY is never capitalized?
The first footnote to The Marriage Vow explains this consistent use of the little “i”:
“Sociological data squares with tradition to argue that self-centered adult egos and agendas in American families must be subordinated to the long-term interests of America’s children.”
Simply stated, women who are unwilling to subordinate and sacrifice themselves to populate America’s economic and political war machine are selfish with a capital “I” - s.e.l.f.I.s.h.
Female self-abnegation is a core principle of the growing “Quiverfull” contingent of the Evangelical community’s “Biblical Family Values” movement which calls upon submissive wives to stay at home to conceive and birth large quantities of ”foot soldiers for Jesus” to advance the Kingdom of God on earth.
The term “Quiverfull” comes from a reference in Psalm 127 which likens children to “arrows” in the hands of a mighty man, “blessed is the man who has his quiver full of them.”
The “Biblical Family” worldview thinks of children as ammunition for God’s Holy War.
The “Biblical Family” worldview calls upon women to prolifically produce “arrows” to fill the “quivers” for their Dominionist husbands.
I lived the extreme Quiverfull lifestyle for nearly two decades – dutifully submitting to my patriarchal husband (creating a bully and a tyrant with my consistent self-sacrificial indulgences of his every whim) and enduring 10 pregnancies (7 live births) which endangered my life and severely compromised my health – all for “the Glory of God.”
Burnout, combined with what small flicker of self-preservation I had left, finally forced me to abandon the “Biblical Family” vision which had consumed my life until there was practically no recognizable “ME” left at all.
An interview with Kathryn Joyce, author of “Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement” led me to start a website to provide information and support for other Quiverfull walkaways: No Longer Qivering.
Notice: There is No “You” in Quivering.
The misspelling is deliberate – a visual cue which suggests the same principle which THE FAMiLY LEADER intends to convey by using a lower-case “I” in FAMiLY throughout their website.
The idea that women must deny themselves and sacrifice themselves to the point of actually losing their lives is not an aberrant Christian teaching – it is merely Jesus’ central message taken to dangerous extremes – which is what makes The Marriage Vow seem innocuous, and even “Christian” to uninitiated followers of the “Family Values” movement.
Having experienced firsthand the self-harm inflicted from living the “Biblical womanhood” ideal to the extent which THE FAMiLY LEADER and similar “pro-family” groups demand, I’m here to warn women that such martyrdom is unhealthy and recklessly twisted.
It’s ironic that The Marriage Vow makes a show of rejecting “Sharia Islam and all other anti-woman, anti-human rights forms of totalitarian control.”
Apparently Michele Bachmann doesn’t make the connection between the biblical injunction to women to obey their husbands and Paul’s implied endorsement of slavery when he instructed slaves to obey their masters. If the purveyors of “Biblical Family Values” succeed in implementing their theocratic agenda in the American political realm, Michele will be required to forget about herself – shut up, go home, serve her husband and raise more babies.

Interesting read, confirming some of my feelings about Bachmann’s value system. How do women, such as Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin, reconcile their political ambitions and the belief that women are to be subservient to men?

That is my thought exactly–Mr Michele and Mr Sarah both follow along like the submissive spouse. Very good article, but again this only shows that what they preach, they themselves don’t practice.

It’s easy for them. Remember Todd was first Dude and sat in on meeting. You can bet Shelly Bachman will have her husband sitting in on her meeting and like Palin’s hubby they will make the decision and they will turn and bat their little fake eye lashes and say yes dear whatever you say.

Or in palin’s case, the needs of her children, especially the toddler with Down’s syndrome.
WHy would any evangelical want palin to abandon him?
Or since he is not ‘perfect’ OK to use that birth to bolster her evangelical beliefs vs abortion, but OK to leave him for extended periods of time to raise money for herself?

this leads me to ask, while the GOP is doing everything it can to stop abortion and family planning why is it passing all of these bills, or initiating budget measures that do not take care of children?
Does this all lead to a dumbing of America in such a manner as we will no longer be the leaders of science and industry as much as we will have a warrior class of young people?
I worry that people like Michelle Bachmann and the other idiot that assign this marriage vow thing may not truly know what they are doing. Or they may not truly know the plans behind these groups that put these marriage vows out. I have a feeling that Bachmann has a decent idea but I think she is totally innocent as to the true purpose which is destroying the United States. I’m sure they think they are making United States dominant, but that’s not how it will come out. And worse I worry about women who are Christians who see this kind of thing and unthinkingly approve of it

Who knew that we were going to need a former fundamentalist to decode a presidential candidate….Thank goodness for your courage, Vyckie. I learn something with each of your posts, and what I learn confirms that this is indeed a troubling direction and not a misstep or a gaffe. You’re doing a great service by writing about this.

Way back in the 1960s, there was a woman’s product called “Compoz.”
Sort of over the counter Valium.
The late Betty Ford broke the silence, but until then, upscale wives were drugged to the eyeballs. So they could smile.
Laura Bush looks like there was a trapped animal behind those eyes.

If you are referring to Laura Bush with the lobotomy statement, I wish you would hear her speak today. She spoke to a generally liberal group of women and was very intelligent and went against “W” several times. She supports women’s rights and choice. She stayed quiet while they were in the Whitehouse, but now both she and her daughter have found their voice and are speaking out for Gay and Women’s rights.

I have one question for the author of this article. Why is it that the fundamental Christians have gained in popularity since President Obama came on the scene?
Crazy right wing organizations (Birch Society) have existed all along, yet they never got quite so much of a foothold as they do now. When one goes down (Sarah Palin) another one springs up (Bachman, Perry etc).

This is not a new movement at all. They have been working on taking over politics with their fundamental policies for a couple decades or more. They are patiently infiltrating every level of government. With the goal being pregnant subservient women at home and men worshiped as demi-gods, with total control of everything. I’ve seen it coming for a long time. Tried to warn women 20 years ago that the anti-abortion people had the utimate goal of banning birth control. Read Vyckie’s book and any of the following: American Fascists by Chris Hedges, American Theocracy by Keven Phillips, Crazy For God by Frank Schaeffer, and The Family (I’m blanking on the author right now)to see how scary these people are. If you think Sharia law is bad….just wait.

Ingarose ~ I explain the growing popularity of the Quiverfull movement here: www.politicususa.com/en/b...
“Rampant FEAR is spreading among the Evangelical community. This fear is a result of the “culture wars” which the religious right perceives it is losing ground on all fronts: Gays are taking over, Feminists are taking over, Liberals are taking over, Atheists are taking over, Muslims are taking over! And to make matters worse, we are living in The End Times — the AntiChrist is poised to be revealed and Armageddon is right around the corner.
“Between the culture wars and the Left Behind madness, this world is a very scary place for Christians, which leads more and more Christians to homeschool in order to protect their children from the influence of secular society. The Christian homeschool community is fertile ground (pun intended) for the promotion of Quiverfull ideals.”

Very true and very ironic because right alongside the call to procreate they also liked to emphasize the scripture that said (paraphrasing) ‘woe onto the woman with child’s during the End Times. The mixed messages were confusing… but I seriously didn’t think the world would last long enough for me to pop out kids AND I definitely got the message that a woman with children during the End Times would be more susceptible to denying Christ in order to save her children when things got bloody… and it would be better to not put yourself in that position of weakness where your children could be used to sabotage your commitment to Christ when the sky started to fall.

I don’t have evidence to back this up, but I would suggest that many evangelical fundamentalists are quite accepting and welcoming of non-Caucasians… in part because converts help fill the coffers… and in part they are no more racist than the rest of American society… as long as the person in question is in lock-step with their patriarchal belief system. I did actually see a poll recently that gave some credence to race not mattering as much as adherence to conservative values. That’s not to say that they aren’t racist, but what I recall mattering most, was not color of skin, but whether or not someone adhered to conservative, born-again worldview. If a woman is voting democrat and proudly a single mother… obviously she just needs Jesus in her life. What bothers me is that they saw the root problem as lack of Christ… and anyone who values a non-Christian god/goddess needs saving… so there is an element of racism in the missionary zeal to gain more followers and make them give up their former values and culture. Once someone tows the patriarchal religious line, they are more than happy to welcome them into the Family… and to take their money.

Jul. 10th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I’d also suggest that they’ve always been there, gathering steam, funds, media outlets and money. I’ve watched it since a little girl… and since i’ve left the faith have found myself screaming into the void trying to get people to take Bachmann seriously (since 2006) and evangelical fundamentalism seriously even before I left the faith in 2001. The Baby Boomers are entering their golden years en-masse so the timing is perfect for a generation not willing to let go of being the center of attention…. especially when so many fundagelicals absolutely and narcissistically believe that their generation (based on the 1948 birth of Israel) “will not pass away” before Jesus comes again. They LOVE to see drama in the Middle East, and even environmental disasters, because everything, including Obama, points to the signs of the End Times. Basically they can’t imagine a world without them in it… and i’ve been watching this my whole life so, yes, it is partially about Obama, but this is has been building for ages.
And yes… they bring their children up to be politically active… they often exclude secular life from their activates… they have been working toward this heart, body and soul my whole life. Again… so glad the word is finally getting out and people are beginning to see the coercion and indoctrination of entire families as a means to the End… as they see it… a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Why have they achieved such prominence during the Obama administrations? Racism. Overt and covert. Religious schools were used to continue segregation after Brown v. Board of Education, and religion is used now to cloak the rhetoric. People who would never even think of criticizing our president because of his color try instead to present “family values” in a new way. Religious fanaticism, dreams of a theocracy, and then the second coming.

Dont know about you, but I’m sick to death regarding these politicans taking “oaths”,”vows” & “pledges”…. if they spent as much time working on a “JOBS PROGRAM” instead of their “limited” government intrusion on citizens lives, maybe we would have a job or two floating around out there.
WHY are politicans taking vow & oaths to everyone but the people that hired them? Do your damn job and stop the showboating… 2012 cannot get here soon enough. Throw them all out and elect some 5th graders to run this country. They have more sense and would do a better job…….

When I look at the part about protecting the innocent fruits of “conjugal” intimacy as the next generation of american children, combined with prompt reform of uneconomic, anti-marriage of welfare policy, ban on abortion while ensuring facts of adoption options provided, but not parenting options confirms to me that they wish to take women back to the time called The Baby Scoop Era (1947-1973). Also the fact that they used “conjugal” in the sentence structure makes me wonder if they wish to remove the protection now granted to people born illegitimate. Very scary when you look at the profits in the adoption industry for healthy white babies and the high rate of infertility in the US…

Well, let’s couple this with the Friedmanist/ Posnerite position that parents should be able to sell their unwanted children, that rape should be allowed if it’s cost-effective, and that public schooling, public assistance, and abortion should all be abolished. Pretty, perfect white babies could be profitably marketed by enterprising middlemen, and the rest sent to (privatized) orphanages to be trained and resold as workers as soon as they are deemed big enough. I daresay the latter group would also be disenfranchized as too uneducated to vote. What do you think?

Thank you again Vickie for giving a voice to so many people who need to tell their story… selfIshly. I hadn’t noticed the little i in the logo … but I do remember a phase I went through while still in the church where I deliberately started using a lowercase i when writing. There is something to be said for this look-at-me modern world, but I also remember preachers talking about the selfishness factor of the uppercase “I” so combined with my german background I felt I needed to humble myself and started using the lowercase. Additionally, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard how selfish it is for women to NOT have children… or even to Not marry. I’ve learned to proudly embrace selfishness as a woman. I appreciate your work in encouraging other Quiverfull women and girls to embrace and recognize the value of themselves… as Individuals.

I would agree here… everyone does this… and I guarantee that many evangelical fundamentalists KNOW that more progressive/liberal Christians aren’t “real” christians and likely going to hell. For me there isn’t anything more entertaining than watching Christians point fingers at each other, judging each other and not understanding that though they claim to worship the same gods, they won’t admit that is sort of a free-for-all.

FYI, “robust childbearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic,” means WHITE babies. The prospect of increasing minority populations is seen as a direct threat to God’s plan of white men being in control of everything. These folks realize the uncomfortable position they will be in as a white minority.
