They were not exempt from the draft but got deferrals when they served as missionaries. Their names went back into the draft pot as soon as they returned unless they went to college and got another deferral or registered as Conscientious Objectors, which very few ever do. That status is available to anyone regardless of religion or no.

Mittens grew up in a sheltered, privileged life, his family (and religion) were/are very conservative, and like many other silver spoons, was able to avoid being drafted (GWB). Romney didn’t serve at all however, unlike Bush who at least pretended to be part of the Reserves.

I’m not excusing him, I’m just answering the question about Mormons and the military. What Mitt did as a youth is of no concern to me. What IS a concern is that he is part of and champion for the 1% while now pretending to understand and be part of the ‘common’ people, the middle class. Changing from a suit to shirt and jeans can’t change the lies about job creation while at Bain and that his economic plan will be disastrous for the 99% while continuing to enrich the 1%.
