In a Devastating Turn for Romney, Swing State and Home State Papers Endorse Obama
By: Sarah JonesOct. 19th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Major papers in two swing states (Florida and Colorado) endorsed President Barack Obama for a second term, and in Utah – considered by some a home state of Mitt Romney’s – the Salt Lake Tribune has also endorsed President Barack Obama.
In the heart of Utah (one of Mitt Romney’s many home states), the Salt Lake Tribune endorses President Barack Obama for a second term. The self-described “largely Mormon, Republican and business friendly state” is going for the incumbent Democrat. They conclude, “(O)ur endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term.” The Salt Lake Tribune:
Nowhere has Mitt Romney’s pursuit of the presidency been more warmly welcomed or closely followed than here in Utah. The Republican nominee’s political and religious pedigrees, his adeptly bipartisan governorship of a Democratic state, and his head for business and the bottom line all inspire admiration and hope in our largely Mormon, Republican, business-friendly state…
In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem-solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.
Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first.
The Florida Tampa Bay Times cites Romney’s “fanciful math” that would increase taxes on the middle class. They conclude, “Obama has capably steered the nation through an incredibly difficult period at home and abroad, often with little help from Congress.”:
In contrast, Romney would transform Medicare into a voucher program that likely would force many future seniors to pay more for less coverage. He rejects raising even $1 of new revenue for every $10 in spending cuts, and he promises to cut taxes by $5 trillion but won’t say which loopholes or tax breaks he would end to cover the cost. Meanwhile, he wants to reduce the federal deficit while increasing spending on defense beyond what even the Pentagon requests — even though the United States spends nearly as much on its military as the rest of the world combined. This fanciful math could only add up to deep cuts in spending on education and other domestic programs — and tax increases on the middle class.
We wish the economic recovery was more vigorous, and we would like the president to present a sharper vision for a second term. But Obama has capably steered the nation through an incredibly difficult period at home and abroad, often with little help from Congress. The next four years will not be easy for whoever occupies the Oval Office, but Obama has been tested by harsh circumstance and proven himself worthy of a second term.
For president of the United States, the Tampa Bay Times recommends Barack Obama.
In Colorado, The Denver Post cites Romney’s troubling comments about the 47% painting him as someone who won’t bring his party closer to the center where it needs to be right now. They conclude, “Obama, on the other hand, has shown throughout his term that he is a steady leader who keeps the interests of a broad array of Americans in mind.”
And though there is much in Mitt Romney’s résumé to suggest he is a capable problem-solver, the Republican nominee has not presented himself as a leader who will bring his party closer to the center at a time when that is what this country needs.
His comments on the 47 percent of Americans who refuse to “take personal responsibility and care for their lives” were a telling insight into his views and a low point of the campaign.
Obama, on the other hand, has shown throughout his term that he is a steady leader who keeps the interests of a broad array of Americans in mind.
We urge Coloradans to re-elect him to a second term.
Romney didn’t get any primary love from his home state of Massachusetts, where he was governor for four years. The Boston Globe, the biggest Massachusetts paper, endorsed Jon Hunstman over Romney in the primary. No word yet from Michigan’s the Detroit Free Press, but the state where Romney grew up is polling solidly for the President, as is Massachusetts where the President’s lead is in double digits.

Wait a second. I know the SLT is going for Obama, but the state of Utah? Utah is the third most conservative state in the nation.

It’s similar in the same way that Pennsylvania is a blue state largely due to the enormous populations in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh – both deeply blue cities. There is a reason the rest of the state is referred to as Pennsyl-tucky.

Good news for President!
These newspapers outline precisely the reasons why President Obama has earned a second term.
I wonder how Romney’s 47% comments on people in our country apply to the rest of the world. If he has such disdain for our lower income citizens how does he feel about the poor in the rest of the world? I wish this issue would show up in the foreign policy discussions.

Marie, I think that’s pretty clear. His stated intention to “kick the [Palestinian] can down the road” and his “encourage illegals to self-deport” says it all. They’re like annoying insects. If you can’t get rid of them, do your best to ignore them. But that really goes for most people. If they don’t think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, they are just wasting oxygen.

I want to know why Real Clear Politics are projecting Romney will win the electoral votes. What!
What is this?
Can someone please explain?

Real Clear politics is showing 10 states as a tossup. Go to –electoral college.com they are to me a better map.

RCP does show 10 states as toss-ups and as of last night the president led in 8 of those! Obama/Biden 2012

How ironic would it be if Romney only received 47% of the vote.

I’ve lived in MI all my life. We don’t want Mitt. Never did. Not crazy about his late father, either, who single-handedly turned the Big Four into the Big Three, by selling the Jeep division to Chrysler. George was Bain Capital before there WAS a Bain Capital, and he taught it all to his son.

Wait a minute…earlier today, there were headlines stating the exact opposite–they were saying that the swing states “swung” back toward Mittens and, the race was neck-n-neck within the electoral college count…this is becoming nothing but media pandemonium.
We, the electorate are being thrown around in the kiddie-car on the never-ending roller coaster ride by the mainstream media…my head is spinning from the constant crazy-making tactics being used to keep us “informed” about this so-called horse race.
I doubt seriously if these newspaper endorsements are having any effect on the GOP operatives; I doubt if they care or have even looked up to see…
They’re much too busy making sure every last voting machine has been “hacked” to flip the votes…

Of course not — they’ll simply chalk that up to the “librul media being in the tank for Obama” . . .

I am in AWE of these newspapers endorsements. Clearly the record of the President is being noticed by more and more conservatives who realize that Romney’s lack of policies, visions or plans would be very costly for America. I applaud these very brave newspapers for their endorsement of our beloved President Obama. I am specially proud of Utah, the state in which I was born, for coming out with their position that President Obama has EARNED a second term. And that Romney is NOT even near qualified as he thinks he is. Bravo! Bravo!

The Salt Lake Tribune has always been liberal since it was bought by out of state anti-Mormons in 1873. Check Wikipedia’s page on them. They nearly always endorse Democrats. They endorsed Obama in 08 as well as Clinton both terms. That the left is trying to jump on this as propaganda is laughable.

Keep whistling past that graveyard that will be the republican party. Willard is going to lose and he deserves to. We have a genius in President Obama and we do not need a pandering corporate tool that bets against the American People at every opportunity. Bye Bye, ooze.

Did you actually read what they wrote in their endorsement?
When you ignore what they wrote, trying to make an argument about their “liberal” motivations, it just shows that you can’t argue with them. Their points were fairly simple, they don’t believe him, since his plan doesn’t add up. That’s not a liberal perspective. It’s actually math. But perhaps your against math and science, since in your mind they are just tools of the liberal elite?
Stop being a troll trying to point out vast liberal conspiracies and focus on actually nominating decent republicans instead of people like Herman Cain, Perry and Romney. If you had a decent candidate the paper might have endorsed him. But you don’t.
That’s your fault, not the paper.
Spend more time building better republicans and less time wasted venting trivial lies in comments.

I have lived in Michigan, most of all my life and now live in Florida. I want nothing to do with Romney!!, his dad’s good business sense got rid of American motors, that’s why we now only have the 3 motor company’s. Bain company destroy many of Michigan good businesses , with that being said, I want to know whats going on with the polls?? everyone here in Florida, except for a few are Voting for President Obama. even the Tampa newspaper co. is/has indorsing President Obama, he’s been one of the best President in my 65 years. so vote for President Obama, My wife Is !!

Polls are just that..polls. If they ask the right questions and over sample rethugs then it looks bleak. If they ask straight forward questions and sample fairly then It is the President decisively. The voter suppression in Florida and other states will be the death of the republican party for a generation to come. Mark my words.

“Devastating” ROFLMAO! First of all, who gives a crap about endorsements from newspapers? Does anyone even consider what some idiotic editorial board has to say? I really don’t think so. The Salt Lake Tribune’s endorsement is hardly devastating. Obama has as much a chance of winning Utah as Romney does getting DC’s three electoral votes. The Denver Post endorsement is hardly “devastating,” or surprising, because the post almost never finds a democrat it doesn’t like, no matter how hare brained, idiotic, and corrupt that particular democrat might be. Everyone here in Colorado knows this, and nobody in Colorado (except perhaps for His Excellency’s most ardent sycophants) takes it seriously. Tampa–well, I believe the other newspaper there endorsed Romney, so again, “devastating?” Please.

The only thing gonna matter is how many actual people actually vote. Doesn’t surprise me at all that major newspapers are endorsing the President, just as I’m not at all surprised that Romney’s disdain for those he labeled “the 47% who won’t take responsibility for themselves” are also voting in their best interests and going with the President. Women (and men) who believe in Equal Pay for Equal Work will certainly not vote for Romney. And c’mon…who you gonna want dealing with foreign affairs? President Obama has been smart, savvy and strong. Finally, Paul Ryan? No one wants Medicare Vouchers! Call your friends in swing states. Talk to them, listen to them, get them out to vote. This one is way too important to miss!

VOTE AND VOTE EARLY !
Nothing and I mean NOTHING matters except the VOTES>
It does NOT matter how GOOD Obama is.
It does NOT matter how bad Romney is.
THE ONE WITH THE MOST VOTES WINS.
NO MATTER HOW FOR OBAMA, AND HOW AGAINST ROMNEY YOU ARE, IT DOES NOT MATTER ! ! ! ! !
unless you vote !
Romney lies, flip flops as much as he does cuz he knows those low inof voters will NOT connect the dots and see his flip flopping. They will think it is all liberal propaganda.
Romney KNOWS that he ONLY has to get the MOST votes and that is ALL that is important to him.

all the racist, pro-life, anti-gay voters have more
motivation than ever to get out and vote for romney–
therefore, pro-obama voters need to be even more
motivated to get out and vote.
the guys in the white hats only win the white house
when we vote them in—-not when we sit on our
butts and assume that good conquers evil.
do not assume lying romney and ayn rand ryan will
be see for what they are. many dont care what they
are. they just want the black guy out of the white
house & they are very very very motivated to vote !

That’s really saying something when Utah doesn’t even trust Romney.

I think Mitt was kind of the favorite son of Utah because of his involvement with the Olympics and of course being Mormon doesn’t hurt either, so that is why it was kind of a slap in the face to him with the paper endorsed the President.

In this Monday nights debate, I certainly hope President Obama will bring up the outsourcing of jobs to China, and bring up what is happening in Freeport IL to the employees of Sensata. If you are not aware, Sensata is a company that makes sensors for automobiles, these people only have a job because the president bailed out the automobile industry. Bain Capitol bought Sensata, and informed the workers that by the end of next month, they will all be out of a job, at this time, they are in the process of outsourcing all 170 jobs to China. Romney has 8 million invested in Bain, which owns 51% of Sensata, and will make a nice profit off the misery of these American workers. Unfortunatley this is only now beginning to get some national attention, but not enough. People need to know about this, because this is the real Mit Romney. He doesn’t car about anyone but himself and making money. In Freeport there is also a tire plant that was threatened until the president imposed a tarrif on Chinese made tires, which saved 1000 jobs there. In this one town you can see the president’s policys benefiting workers, while Mit Romney’s only hurt workers. Obama supporters, please help me to spread the word about the workers of Sensata, and what they are going through right now thanks to Mit Romney.
