After Downgrade Boehner, McConnell, and GOP Approval Ratings Plunge
By: Jason EasleyAug. 9th, 2011more from Jason Easley
A new CNN poll released today found that voters are angry and they are taking out their anger on John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and the entire Republican Party.
The CNN poll found that John Boehner’s approval rating has fallen off a cliff. In July, Boehner had a 43% favorable rating and a 32% unfavorable rating, (net +11). After the debt ceiling debacle the numbers have reversed. Boehner now has a 33% favorable rating, and 40% unfavorable rating. The Speaker of the House has gone from a plus eleven to a net minus seven. That is an 18 point negative swing in one month.
In contrast, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has one from a 35% approval rating to 31% approval rating, and a her disapproval rating moved down a point from 52% to 51%. The loss for Pelosi was only a net three points.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel didn’t fare much better than Boehner. McConnell’s favorable rating dropped from 27% to 21%. His unfavorable rating grew from 32% to 39%. In July McConnell’s net favorable rating was at a (-5), today his net negative is (-18). McConnell suffered a net thirteen point negative swing in a month.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid saw his favorable rating stay nearly the same. His favorable rating was 29% in July. It is now 28%. His unfavorable rating moved from 37%-39%. Reid’s net approval rating was (-8). It has increased slightly to (-11). The change in Reid’s numbers was within the poll’s margin of error, so his favorability can be considered unchanged.
The Republican Party itself now has a 33% favorable rating and a 59% unfavorable rating. In July the GOP had a 41% favorable rating and a 55% unfavorable rating. Republicans lost 8 points off of their favorable rating, and gained 4 points in unfavorability. The end result is a net (-12) swing in their numbers.
The Tea Party mirrored the Republican Party’s decline. In July, they had a 37% favorable rating and a 47% unfavorable rating. After pushing the country to the brink of default, they now have a 31% favorable rating and a 51% unfavorable rating. This is net (-10) point swing in their favorability.
On the flip side, the Democratic Party has a 47% favorable rating and a 47% unfavorable rating. In July the Democrats had 45% favorable rating and a 49% unfavorable rating. The party of Obama’s favorables went up by two points, and their unfavorable went down by two points for a net four point gain. The Democratic Party was the news maker to gain in favorability.
The grand Republican plan has always been to keep voters angry until the 2012 election by keeping the economy in the dump. It worked. The American people are angry. What the GOP brain trust never counted on was that the American people would be angry and blame them.
There are two important points to take away from this poll. First, the Republicans tank and blame strategy is backfiring. Second, the Democratic message of increasing taxes on the wealthy is a winner. Poll after poll has shown that the Democrats desire to have the wealthy and corporate America pay their fair share resonates well with voters.
By being reasonable and trying to make a deal, Democrats have emerged from this mess looking better in the eyes of potential 2012 voters. The combination of the Republican desire to cut Medicare combined the the Democratic fair share argument on taxation could create a powerful 2012 message. A new USA Today poll revealed huge potential for another wave election in 2012. Obama’s approval ratings show that he is in a better position than any of the other Washington components to survive a big wave.
The American people aren’t as dumb as the GOPs thinks they are. The high profile near default, and subsequent debt downgrade opened a lot eyes in this country. Those people now know who to blame for the nation’s current mess, and they are placing the majority of the blame on the Republican Party.

The disapproval ratings couldn’t happen to more deserving folks. Too bad it took an almost catastrophe for voters to see what was happening. Now if they will remember come election day—

You are so right. Every member of the republican party/tea party need to be voted out of congress for mess that they have created before and during the debt ceiling debate. I hope every voter in 2012 will final go back to putting and keeping the democrates in congress as the way it was back some years ago……Democrative policies are better for the people. As President Clinton always stated, anytime you craft policies that benefit only the wealthy and the rich, you are going to tear down the middle class and make the poor even poorer.
But just to think of what Paul Ryan want to do with Medicare and not even consider going back to President Clinton tax code on the wealth is enough to make voter vote them out in 2012.

This fits in to the Republican Plan B: Suppression of the Democratic Party votes in 2012. Between claims of “voter fraud” spurring Draconian Voter ID laws designed to make it harder for Democratic voters to exercise their right to vote and the questionable nature of electronic voting machines with proprietary technology that can be accessed remotely, owned by companies that donate heavily to the Republican Party, the stage has been set for Republicans to outright steal the election when it knows it can’t win on issues.

I want to see ads showing the stock market tanking on Monday with Boehner’s voice over “I got 98% of what I wanted, so yeah, I’m pretty happy”.

So do I. I hope every liberal group start running ads on Boehner voice as well and film on Rick Perry stating at the Lousisiana caucus a couple of months ago that the republican party cannot be everything to all people. We do not need a party making laws for the people of American if they are not for all the people. I do believe that the voter now see if the vote a republican in the whitehouse in 2012 it will be no more Medicare for seniors, no more social security, and more and more cuts to programs for the middle class……This is a very important footnote here…The republicans are always talking about the Obama admin creating jobs. I find it ironic that all the republicans want to do is cut jobs. All of the cuts that the republicans wants in the debt ceiling is going to cut more jobs and never touch the rich and anyway.

Well, and in the Presidential campaign, there’s always faithless electors.
One thing, though: it looks as if, no matter how much Rupert Murdoch may huff, and puff, and blow the House down, there are Americans who won’t buy his version of the “News”… especially not now.

Yeah, but let’s see how many people still remember by election time. I mean, last November an astonishing number of people had evidently forgotten everything that happened before Jan. 20, 2009.

Yes, true. Not only that, when big animals like bears, bulls, elephants, rhinos etc. get hurt they become much more dangerous than in their original state.
Just judging by Rush, Beck and Fox they are pulling out all the stops. Some of them are becoming rabid and we better watch out.

yes–but their audience is shrinking.
whether they like it or not, Obama seems still to be trusted more than anyone in the republican party. He’s certainly liked better, but apparently he has successfully made his case that the downgrading is the result of republican intransigence.

Working “from cradle to grave” for the “corporate-masters” and their Govt.puppets should not be the future of this country’s citizens or of any other citizen of this planet. Take the “greed” out of the current system and we as the human-species could possibly create a “heaven on earth”in harmony with nature and the elements. If we agreed all of our basic requirements agriculture(food),health-care, energy, education, infrastructure and public transportation could be top of the line and provided at cost to all citizens.Call it what you want but if we are directing our taxes to provide these essentials at cost to us we might not have to work so hard, don’t you think? People could choose any of the fields mentioned above and work in them. On the job training given. Ounce the programs are perfected we can let computers and robots take over. what will we do then? Don’t worry the “private sector” can still make cars, toys, clothes, furniture etc.But if the quality is not there they won’t be there either. That’s the “American-way”right? As it goes now the only things we as U.S. citizens have to look forward to in the future is carrying a shoe shine box for the rich mans shoes and a gun for the rich mans wars.”Hell on earth”.Been there done that. Agree to a change now for the better.

But, but but, Think Progress is reporting that according to RNC Chairman Priebus, President Obama is the reason the republicans are not polling well. When I read this, I laughed as hard and as loud as I could because it’s validation that Priebus was forced to rely on the rw “it’s Obama’s fault” meme even though it doesn’t apply in this case!

That’s the great thing about politics. One week we’ll be blaming them for the stock market going down, and the next we’ll be blaming Obama for them not going back up.
People have short memories. You’ll see those poll numbers creep back up when they start spinning their rhetoric all over FOX news again.

It’s great that the polls show that people want the increase in taxes for the rich. We just need politicians that actually listen to the people. All throughout the debt ceiling debate, citizens on both sides were saying this and none of the republicans were listening. I really hope come election time we don’t forget all of this nonsense and vote out the ones responsible.

Boehner was shown with a smirk on his face saying he got 98% of what he wanted. He probably didn’t reckon with the fact that any credibility he has ever had is completely shot. I will get 100% of what I want when he and his ilk are voted out of office and people who have our interests at heart are voted in to replace these ideologues.

How about this suggestion ? President Obama meets with S&P and gets them to agree to reinstate America’s AAA credit rating IF Republicans agree to let the Bush tax cuts expire. Barack could go on national T.V. to announce the potential upgrade. Imagine Boener having to say “No.” Barack would win in a landslide.
