Today on his radio show, Rush Limbaugh continued his attacks on Colin Powell. In Limbaugh’s mind Powell’s endorsement was about race, and pressure from the black elites in the Democratic Party. Limbaugh also made the claim that as Sec. of State, Powell damaged the Bush administration.
“If Powell had endorsed McCain, you know what would have happened? Donna Brazile, the other black elites in the Democratic Party would never have forgiven him. This was all about Powell and race, nothing about the nation and its welfare. He said it's not about race -- show me all the inexperienced white liberals you've endorsed if it's not about race. Of course everyone's having a tizzy,” Limbaugh said. This is Rush’s first mistake, he assumes that all black people talk to each other. His second mistake is in assuming that Democrats expected Powell to endorse Obama. They didn’t.
He then claims that Powell is a Washington insider, with poor judgment who is looking for a job in an Obama administration, “He evolved over time into a calculating Washington insider who speaks incessantly to the media … He did great damage to the Bush administration. It stuns me how Gen. Powell and others can back someone whose judgment has been so poor … they are positioning themselves to perhaps get positions in an Obama administration."
Limbaugh said that the general isn’t really a Republican, "Now back to Gen. Powell: I just want to button this up ... It was totally about race. The Powell ... endorsement -- totally about race. People have forgotten, but I have not, ladies and gentlemen. Colin Powell publicly broke with the administration over affirmative action, specifically affirmative action cases that were before the Supreme Court in 2003 ... He is pro-affirmative action, he is also pro-abortion ... I think he's still saying he's a Republican after all this, after endorsing Obama."
Powell was the only competent cabinet member in the first term of the Bush administration. He apparently damaged President Bush by trying to get him to rethink the invasion. He also damaged the administration by wanting to engage in diplomacy. Powell didn’t damage Bush. Bush damaged Powell. In Rush’s mind if a Republican differs with the party in any way, then they aren’t a real Republican. Real Republicans don’t think for themselves.
Colin Powell rarely speaks to the media, and if he was endorsing Obama strictly on the basis of race, he could have done this months ago. What makes Powell’s endorsement so damaging to McCain is that he waited to watch the debates and the campaign unfold. He appears to have made his decision based on who he thought would be the best president.
I think that his endorsement was McCain’s to be had, but by running such a negative campaign, he lost it. Limbaugh can try to make himself and his listeners feel better about this by minimizing it, but it was ideas not race that convinced Powell to endorse Obama. Let’s turn Rush’s excuse around. If Powell was white and endorsed Obama, what would his excuse be then?

Glad you picked up on this- although I would take issue on the fact that Rush was attacking Colin Powell.
He was attacking the left-wing, liberal "drive-by" media.
This is the part of the e-mail that Rush sent to Politico- that the media conveniently forgets to include when reporting this:
"As for Powell's statement of concern that he would have difficulty with two more Republican Supreme Court nominees, I was unaware that he had dislike for John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, and Antonin Scalia. I guess he also regrets Ronald Reagan making him a four-star general. I guess he also regrets George Bush making him secretary of state. I guess he also regrets George H. W. Bush naming him chairman of the Joint Chiefs. I guess he's also upset that a Republican appointed his son to head the FCC. Yeah, let's hear it for transformational figures," because Powell had said Obama's a transformational figure, and yet Colin Powell is who he is and is a household name because of Republicans.

The only thing Powell and Brazille have in common is the color of their skin, and that is what Limbaugh was getting at.

He has been honest, unlike our current Republican president who spent most of his 40's with a straw up his nose as you put it? Rush Limbaugh just need to excite his millions of listeners to make his boss happy. His severe addiction to painkillers almost cost him his job and live. His radio talk show style always rely on controversial topic, and the endorsement of Powell for Obama is what he thinks his listeners wanted to hear. It's kind of sad this widely-known so called conservative talk radio host seems in-synch with the McCain/Palin tickets tone of division instead of unity. I'm still dreaming that one day our beloved country finally accepted one great achievement because of their hardworks and dedications instead of the color of their skins. The diversity of our country is our greatest assets, this comment by Rush is the consistent reminder that we're still a long way from getting the racial barrier in this country finally crumbling down. Powell endorsement is so powerful (although they won't admit it) that Republicans and the Conservatives have to play it down and worse...should be critized!

The difference between Obamas's drug useage and Cindy McCain's painkiller addiction is pretty simple. When a person is experiencing a medical condition that requires pain medication to be taken, that patient does not know how they are going to react to that medication. They did not intentionally set out to become addicted to the drug that was prescribed for them by their physician. Obama intentionally used cocaine to get high. May I note that Cocaine is an illegal drug, while the drugs taken by Cindy McCain were legally prescibed by a physician. Before you mention it, there is a huge difference between legal and illegal drugs. One does not even know what is in cocaine from a drug dealer. Obama not only broke the law he also exhibited poor judgement by using cocaine. Many people have used this drug, but they don't want to be my president. I would bet that McCain has never used cocaine. As far as Palin, I haven't seen any proof that she has used illegal drugs. Back to Rush's point, why is Powell endorsing Obama except for the color of Obama's skin, which is the only thing the two of them have in common. Real Republicans don't endorse candidates who are on the far left.

Contrary to what you say Measley, Powell made his decision months ago to endorse Obama before he watched the campains unfold. He told Tom Brokaw that he was supporting Obama and Brokaw replied "When you are ready to make that announcement, please come on my show to do so." Brokaw thought he was going to have to pull it out of Powell on his show this weekend, but was pleasantly surprised that Powell was forthcoming with his endorsement of Obama. I think that just helps make my case that Powell is endorsing Obama based on his race, not his substance. Powell made his choice before the debates. I just said this morning to someone, "Having Obama become our next president is like hiring a CEO, who totally lacks the job experience but is a good orator, to run a major American company." Obama is just talking his way into the job and I shudder to think of how he is going to deal with foreign countries like Iran, Afganistan, North Korea, Pakistan, Syria, etc.

Powell's endorsement
So let me get this straight, when a white man endorses another white man it is based on policy or beliefs, but when a black man endorses another black man it is simply based on race. So how do we characterize all those all those crazies that cross racial lines to endorse a candidate?

Colin Powell
Colin Powell simply gets his revenge. Colin Powell was a highly respected person during Bush's term as president. When he went before the UN to convince everyone that Iraq had WMD's he believed it based on the evidence they all had reviewed. And if Colin Powell believed it, we all had infinite respect and trust in his judgement and we believed it too. When we didn't find those WMD's, and there was some question of the person who furnished the evidence, I think Powell felt somewhat foolish. He left the administration thereafter. I would have predicted him to select Obama, not based on race but on revenge. I hope history will show the truth for all concerned.

The Real Argument
If Limbaugh thinks that Powell endorsed Obama because they are both African American, then I have to assume that Limbaugh supports McCain because he's white. To suggest that race plays such a huge part of this election is foolhardy on either side of the aisle. To imply that the only reason African Americans vote for Obama is race, well that's just bigoted. This election and most in the last few decades have been more about money and who gets to keep it than anything else. Those who vote against their economic interests based on god or guns are misled. Those who claim it's about war and peace are short sighted. This is about the Republican desire to gut social programs and cut taxes for the wealthy and for the Democratic desire to do something akin to the opposite.

OK, this figure has been used to point out that it is all about race. Yes, 90% of blacks support Obama in this election. However, it should also be pointed out that in 2004 90% of blacks voted for Kerry. Generally, the vast majority of blacks vote for Democrats. So pointing out that a large numbwer of blacks support Obama doesn't really prove anything, as he is a Democrat. Now, if a black Republican were running and he received 90% of the black votes then a bigger point would be made. No doubt many blacks are voting for Obama because of his race, much the same way that many whites will not vote for him because he is black. However, if Hillary Clinton were running the same number of black voters would support her, and most likely Colin Powell would support her over McCain.

Why do you think white American's would want to commit suicide, or move to an all white place just because a half black/half white person got elected president? Since I drive a lot I listen to Rush periodically and air america. I am mostly libertarian but listen to both with an open mind.
I mostly listen to Rush for entertainment. I cannot believe some of the statements he makes and the mentality of some of his callers.
Two days after Obama got elected Rush said he would rather have Obama than Clinton. Then he goes on and on foaming at the mouth of how Obama is a Thug and a potential terrorist and that Obama is responsible for stock market collapse.
I wish I would get through to his show and ask him why he would rather have potential terrorist in the white house than a Clinton?
