John McCain Calls Hillary Clinton A Pig

Today, John McCain called Hillary Clinton a pig.
Essentially.
For all intents and purposes.
According to his own words...
Barack Obama, while on the campaign trail this morning, told his audience to beware of McCain's brand of change, which only came about after the Democratic National Convention hit upon the theme so well. Obama said, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."
After word got out, the McCain campaign became "incensed" and demanded Obama immediately apologize for calling Sarah Palin a pig.
Say what? When did Obama call Palin a pig? Where in Obama's statement did he even reference Palin? He was talking about McCain's sudden fondness with the campaign theme of change. The fact that McCain's people are so ticked off is due to their realization that their one shiny, custom-made, applause-getting line from Palin's specially-designed speech during the convention just got turned on them. And they don't like it one bit. They wanted to be able to own "lipstick" somehow.
But let's take McCain's campaign at their word; let's say using the phrase "you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig" does indeed magically transfer to the person being criticized (and in this case, Obama wasn't even criticizing Palin). John McCain and his people need to go back about a year or so and recall what McCain himself said while criticizing Hillary Clinton's proposals on health care change in America. McCain linked her new health plan back to the one she proffered some sixteen years ago.
At that time, McCain said, and I quote, "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
Why, John McCain, I do believe you called Hillary Clinton a big fat pig. Maybe you should apologize immediately.
This outburst and feigned incredulity is just more proof of a campaign that knows it can't win on discussing issues so it is desperately grasping on to any little thing that might make the news and possibly continue their ugly spin that Democrats are sexists while Republicans [suddenly] love women [and unwed mothers].

Obama's use of this saying
Obama's use of this saying was a poor choice of words and does look like a cut at Palin. There were many other ways to say what he did and inadvertent or intentional it still looks bad.
How stupid is Obama, then?
... if he simply didn't realize how his "clever" insult would be interpreted? Do you honestly think that he ... and his speech writers and handlers were just so foolish that they couldn't see this coming? Come on...
Misinterpretation...
Absolutely... Obama made a comment with a deep thought pattern that could only be interpreted correctly after a day of reflection on past events. But in the moment, his own supporters were cheering because they thought he was referring to Palin and it shows. This is John Kerry ALL over again. Way over our heads and ultimately making the wrong impact.
MISINTERPRETATION
DID I MISSED SOMETHING? DID OBAMA SAY SARAH PALIN IS A PIG? WHEN? WHERE?????????
pig lipstick
McCain and men don't use lipstick only gays and McCain is not gay.
You are totally right!!
Like everybody says, Obama thinks through every word he says. He chooses his words very carefully, that is why what he says when answering spontaneous questions seems so disconnected. He is very smart and aware of Palin's joke, so I believe he knew how this would be taken by his Democratic audience. He didn't have to say it was about her. I think it was a "clever", backhanded way to insult her and then be able to feign innocence.
Jab V Pig
Take a jab at Palin, yes. Call her a pig, no way. Connection's just not there unless you're a Republican tool looking for any reason to trash Obama.
Like I said, McCain said the same thing about Hillary, so if Obama is wrong, then so is McCain. Palin and the Republicans do not own the old cliche so they don't get to define meaning or intent.
Besides, this is coming from the Republicans, the one's who brought us:
time line = bad; time horizon = a beautiful, patriotic thing
civil war = bad; sectarian violence = positive spin
bail out = bad; liquidity back stop = no funds from tax payers
torture = war crimes perpetrated by commies and terrorists; enhanced interrogation = afternoon chit chat with tea and cookies from Americans
How anyone can still believe a single word Republicans say is beyond me.
?
first off republicans sling ten times the mud trying to avoid the issue's
second it was taken out of context, and McCain is guilty of the very same slander almost verbatim.
and third SHE'S A PIG!!! with lipstick.
even the joke she told says it all. she's a BITCH with lipstick
thats true however I believe
thats true however I believe it was the audiance's reaction that is a problem
" WILL SOMEONE GIVE US A BREAK !!!!!! "
wow, i am so sick and tired of hearing about the non-sense that its not even funny anymore !!! but i guess that its ok for McCAIN to use the "you can put lip stick on a pig ,but its still a pig phrase, towards HILLARY CLINTON,but cry like a little girl with a skined knee when the same phrase is used.....wow !!!!! but what it all boils down to is this " we still live in a world that is color struck.thats right people, you know just as well as i do that this race is a race about race !!! americans don't think that a black man has what it takes to lead this country...and its sad that we still live in a world like that.the same world that loves to cliam, that "blacks" love to play the race card, when in fact its the other way around.we all know that this will be a record setting election. but what no one will talk about is the reason why....and thats because a black man is running for president.and people, thats real talk !!!!!
Not the same thing
McCain is calling Hillary's proposal a pig not Hillary herself. Obama called Mrs. Palin a pig personally! Big Difference. NOT the same thing.
WTF ARE YOU TALKING
WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?!?! Did you read what Obama said? He never even mentioned Palin. He was talking about John McCain's policies being the exact same as George W. Bush's. H. Christ!!! AHHH!!! People like you shouldn't be allowed to breed.
Who are you kidding...
...anyone with half a brain knows what Obama was inferring by the comment. He's a politician, not an idiot. He wouldn't have the guts to come out with the words, "Palin a pig with lipstick"...but, except liberal mouthpieces would not understand the full intent of the comment?
Uppity Pig?
John M,
So, when Republican Congressman Lynn Westmoreland called Obama "uppity," was that racist? Surely, "anyone with half a brain knows what [Westmoreland] was inferring (by the way, the word you're looking for is 'implying.' Inferring means you're listening, not speaking) by the comment."
Come on, come out and say Westmoreland is a racist and that he should apologize. Let's see if you're a man of true character and integrity, or just another right wing fool...uh, tool.
who are you kidding
McCain and men don't wear lipsticks only gays and McCain is not gay.
LMAO
LMAO@ THIS COMMENT U ARE A FOOL
Unless you think Obama was in a coma for the last 3 weeks...
... it's silly to pretend that he had no knowledge of the context in which he was speaking, which is Sarah Palin's oft-quoted line about hockey moms wearing lipstick.
This is like when Obama "accidentally" flipped off Hillary; everyone in the room knew what was going on... then the fake halos come out after the fact.
Love Thine Enemies
Oh yes, heaven forbid the Messiah could err and fling derision at his enemies!
Two possibilities, both of them aren't good.
1. Obama didn't know any better.
2. Obama knew what he was doing and is now playing green.
Well if its the first, then give me a break, his inexperience is showing.
If its the 2nd, he's trying to have his cake and eat it too. Which of course, he should be entitled to! He did of course part the red sea and is promising us eternal salvation.
Obama and McCain (pig slinging)
WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT: Why are you even responding, you are only spouting foulness. Do not start thinking you can tell anyone how to live or how many children to have, AMIMALS BREED.
Really. I used to think this
Really. I used to think this election was an intelligence test. But now I see that these people willfully believe even the most ridiculous lies. A very strange vacuum that is filling with crap, lipstick or otherwise.
pig joke
Obama called McCains plan a pig in lip stick not Palin, McCain-in Palin will just keep bringing are country down
Where Did Obama Say that she is a pig?
"You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still going to stink after eight years."
The above is what Obama said. He is talking about the idea that McCain will bring about change as putting lipstick on pig. McCain's voting record is all with Bush. The idea of change is the lipstick, McCain's policies are the pig. This has nothing to do with Palin, but since whatever popularity McCain has rides on her, his campaign made a cheap attempt to play the gender card.
"Not the same thing"
"Not the same thing" wrote:
"McCain is calling Hillary's proposal a pig not Hillary herself. Obama called Mrs. Palin a pig personally! Big Difference. NOT the same thing."
Ummm, sorry -- it *is* the same thing. The article very, VERY clearly shows that Obama was referring to McCain's pretense of being a reformer, and that he will be no different than Bush. McCain's use of "lipstick on a pig" in regards to Hillary was indeed pretty much the same thing (aside from being dumber). People claiming that Obama was calling Palin a pig are either morons or liars (aka Republicans).
I don't believe Obama was
I don't believe Obama was refering to Palin as a pig, I believe his statements were referring to McCains statement of CHANGE when in fact it was meant for all the pork in the bills McCain has worked on and that was not considered change. I did not see Sara Palins name in the story.
This Ol girl has just made up her mind to support Barak Obama and Joe Biden I can't believe all this stuff is even being talked about. I am more concerned about Health care for workers, unemployed,Social Security,Economy, and Gas prcies (Not necessarily in that order) since I am almost there. I never heard McCain talk about change until Obama started campaigning on it CHANGE "YES WE CAN" I never considered myself as a particular political party person but more independant but again I will support Obama this time.
I think the mccain camp
I think the mccain camp knows exactly what it is doing, they know Obama didn't mean Palin is a pig, they are just slinging mud. They're a dirty camp running a dirty campaign plain and simple. They'll say anything and do anything to get elected - bottomline. as a registered republican i'm pretty ashamed of what the republican party has become..
"Will" you "change?"
Ah, Will, nice to hear. But the true test...will you vote for Obama come November?
'wILL" YOU "CHANGE?"
YES, YES, AND YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have to, he's the only
Have to, he's the only candidate who makes any sense. And i'll vote democrat until all the neo-con nit-wits leave my party.
You know, i used to like
You know, i used to like McCain, but he's become a total tool of the neacons (or neocrooks). I will vote for Obama. He and Biden are showing a lot more presidential presence and dignity than the other two.
What?
To anyone who thought he was talking about Palin: seek and ye shall find.
That's what YOU wanted to hear. While watching the video that thought didn't cross MY mind because I wasn't looking for it.
Is he forbidden from mentioning any product that a woman may use because it will be a reference to Palin?
Obama: McCain's a douche!
McCain: Sexist!
Obama: You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
McCain: Unfair!
Obama: I was talking to a lady who had recently lost her job and....
McCain: Hey! He's talking about Palin!!!
madness
Country First
You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy unless he is wearing LIPSTICK.
Signed, Miss Piggy (star of TV, stage and screen)
Im quite enjoying the sight
Im quite enjoying the sight of republicans recoiling in revulsion and righteous indignation at this obviously heinous and clumsy personal attack.
When did the GOP go 'PC'? Are people truly appreciative of how hypocritical they are being right now?
As a british citizen I can only stare in awe and astonishment at the American political process, McCain seems like a geunine 'good guy' if you forgive the simplification the majority of his peers in the GOP however are incredibly distasteful and seem hell bent on destroying all sensible political debate in this election
Obama's descriptions within
His statement were crispy clear and definitely referred to Mrs. Palin. Hey, he obviously can only resort to such childish moves as to call his competitors names.
No, he was NOT talking about Palin
Here's the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPd4yk0x-eg
or just go to YouTube and look up FPd4yk0x-eg
He was specifically talking about McCain's policies being the same as Bush's, but now McCain et. al. have slapped on the magic "Change" slogan, as if that somehow changes the policies.
Wheeler, JohnM, and the others need to check their facts before commenting.
Nice try, but context matters
Obama made his remarks in the context of Palin's "lipstick" remark, one of the most quoted lines in her speech. There was no equivalent context from Hillary.
Sorry, but a simple text search doesn't get Obama away from his schoolyard insults.
You're too funny...
So, Palin and the Republicans now get to own "lipstick" forever? What about the fact that McCain is now stealing "change," something clearly OWNED by Obama?
You're too funny, DRH. Try a little more logic. What you're advocating is the most base and banal idiocy--the idea that somebody can own a piece of the language and call it their own, like Paris Hilton copyrighting "that's hot." Right, because no one else has ever said that before.
No body can own a word
If you think that the republicans are claiming to own the word "lipstick" then you are just an idiot. It's just quite a coincidence that Obama used that term right after Palin gave her speech refering to lipstick. I think that it was an intentional low blow on behalf of Obama and his speech writers. I can't wait to see him get crushed in the polls.
political elbow
Andrew,
I agree with you that it was an absolutely inadverdent use of the old cliche. However, to mock Palin and her speechwriters for a line that is now famous is a whole different thing than directly calling her a pig.
No doubt Obama was mocking Palin's overused "lipstick and pitbulls" line. But then again, the Republicans went out of their way to mock Obama about being a community organizer. These kinds of political elbows are fine. I've got no problems with them.
But when McCain's campaign takes it out of this planet and tries to say Obama is calling Palin a pig, well, that's just desperation and idiocy--two traits that mark Bush's presidency, and apparently, what is now marking McCain's run for president.
Palin's Hockey Mom Lipstick Comment Most Played Soundbyte
Did this ass really just say that "Change" is "OWNED" (his use of caps not mine) by Obama? Wow. Right. Moving along....
No one said that Republicans own the word lipstick "forever". But the Sarah Palin speech is still fresh in the mental landscape of the media and it isn't difficult to place it in context of recent VERY heavily played soundbytes from Palins speech.
Fine details......
He used all caps, but he also used quotation marks. That should have made it obvious that he thought the word "change" isn't really owned by the Obama campaign. If you're going to nitpick, go all the way.
my bad
Oops. He didn't use quotes. For some reason, I thought he did. He probably should have. I still interpreted his statement, though, as meaning that Obama owns change only in the figurative sense, in that he's made it his campaign mantra.
On a philosophical level, we could actually argue about the ownership of words, anyway. It could be said that Obama really DOES "own" change, at least for the duration of this campaign, since he started out with that word as this theme. The word "change" is now associated with the Obama campaign, and any attempt by the McCain campaign to use the word does feel, to me at least, like a sorry attempt to "steal" the word and what it means right from the Obama camp. But it's all a matter of perception, really.
Clever indeed, but sadly people just don't get it...
Obama's comment was actually brilliant, but sadly most people are too stupid(not ignorant, that would be too complimentary) to get it. Obama was talking about McCain's policy... and Obama's lipstick comment was a great reference to both McCain's policy AND Palin. But it wasn't Obama calling Palin a pig. It was a comment on the fact that Palin is getting a TON of attention which in fact is misdirecting the attention on the man whose actually running for President. Ever since the GoP convention it's like America has forgotten MCCAIN is running for President... NOT Palin. Since Palin is getting all this attention and everyone just loves the lipstick - Hockey Mom/Pitbull comment she made... what better way to remind people the policies will be coming from McCain -- not Palin if he's president.
No doubt the comment had connections to Palin... but not literally....get a clue. Since America was founded, jabs at a politicians policies have been done like this. America obviously isn't ready for a minority/woman in high office... the country itself cant seem to grasp satire when it comes to that yet... just like how everyone freaked out just a couple of months ago about that New Yorker cover of the Obama's.
re: People just dont get it.
Yes, you're absolutely RIGHT. And that is why the comment should have been kept to himself. He's making the same mistakes Kerry did and giving the other side soundbytes to use against him. Obama is a brilliant man. But that doesn't always translate to the American people at large, especially when you have a media blitz in the way to sensationalize everything.
Thanks for bringing up the New Yorker, perfect example. Do you care to mention that Obama and Michelle themselves didn't approve of the ad? And that was done by their own supporters. If the Dems are relying on America to "get a clue", they've got a long road ahead.
I respectfully disagree.
I respectfully disagree. Silence due to fear is not the answer. The problem isn't what Obama said. The problem is America's overall stupidity of COMPLETELY misinterpreting what he said, and he shouldn't sensor himself based on that pathetic denominator. Ever.
Admittedly, that could cost him the election, but sadly I don't think the snowball of stupidity this country is caught up in is going to stop rolling anytime soon. It's going to take a big and massive snowball crashing our country hard before people wake up and think for themselves again.
So my guess is we'll elect McCain to keep the snowball rolling along while so many Americans let all the talking heads on "the news" networks tell them how to think. Heck maybe we can just have our presidential candidates picked by Simon and Paula Abdul... "See you in the next round John"
It's not ALL the people's fault.
As an earlier commentator said, when she saw the speech, she didn't automatically jump to the "OMGWTFBBQ he's calling Palin a PIG!" stance. Not everyone in this country is that stupid.
I think we need to mention the influence of the media here. Not only did the Republican party immediately cry foul after Obama's comment, but the mainstream media, ever hungry for drama (especially after Hillary left the race), started mentioning this really rather insignificant moment OVER and OVER, so people who didn't even SEE the speech got it into their heads that Obama called Palin a pig.
So, while I agree that many Americans are pretty stupid for believing everything they see on CNN (or Fox News), how much can we blame them (entirely) when we realize that that so many people have been raised to trust the news (whether it's news or not)? If we can't trust the "news," who can we trust?

Since both McCain and Palin
Since both McCain and Palin make up resumes they don't have, its not all that suprising they would see insults that aren't there. The question is can we afford to have people who are that "touchy" running this country. Being president takes a bit of a tough skinned approach. These two are just too sensitive to do the job.
Here is what's going on
Here is what's going on. Team McCain thought their Palin stunt was going to lift them into the lead, well, it hasn't, so now they have to go Plan B, which is to sling every bit of mud at Obama they can find. Even if they have to make it up, which is exactly what they are doing here. The Obama camp's big mistake is that they take don't hit the airwaves with a new ad immediately to shoot this stuff down.
The Clintons showed Democrats how to beat these kinds of slurs and stunts in the 90s. You have to be pro-active, and when attacked respond immediately. I think the GOP is doing everything they can to keep the race close, run out the clock, and roll the dice on Election Day. The problem is that they aren't going to be able to avoid the issues for 3 pres. and 1 VP debate. It is going to be an interesting October to say the least.
Pigs on the wing
What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Islamic Fundies?
Lipstick.
