McCain: No Using Obama's Middle Name in Attacks

ImageAfter William Platt II, the head of the Lehigh County GOP used Barack Obama’s middle name twice while talking about him before John McCain and Sarah Palin took the stage today in Bethlehem, PA, the McCain campaign put out a statement denouncing the tactic as a distraction from the real questions in the race.

Platt said, “The No. 1 most liberal senator in the United States of America was, you guessed it, the ambassador of change, Barack Hussein Obama,” Afterwards, McCain spokesman Paul Lindsey said, “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”

The problem for the McCain campaign is that this is a monster of their own creation. Their most ardent supporters, such as Platt, are only following the campaign’s lead. This is the danger that they risked when they started trying to call Obama a terrorist. So why did the McCain campaign have this change of heart today? I think it has something to do with the recent crowd reactions when they make the Obama is a terrorist smear. From people screaming out treason, terrorist, and kill him when Palin accused Obama of palling around with terrorists over the weekend, maybe the McCain campaign finally realized that they had taken it too far, and are now trying to pull back a bit.

This whole Obama is a terrorist narrative is very dangerous and politically stupid. There is nothing for John McCain to gain from these smears, and I also wonder if a stop was put to this Barack Hussein Obama nonsense because it happened in front of John McCain today. I don’t think that McCain himself is comfortable with these smears, which is why he doesn’t deliver them. It is one thing to question an opponent’s character and judgment, but quite another to perhaps cause physical harm to Obama as an unhinged supporter could take these smears too seriously.

The McCain campaign appears to be divided. Palin questioned why McCain pulled out of Michigan, and seems to be running a different campaign then that of her running mate. All of this makes me question, how much control John McCain has over the day to day operations of his campaign. I doubt that we have seen the last of some GOP zealot talking about Barack Hussein Obama, but at least there seem to be some people in the McCain campaign who aren’t comfortable with this new direction.

But it's his name...

As you know I'm supporting McCain and especially Palin but I wish they wouldn't call it "off limits" to say Barack Hussein Obama's name. It' his name because his father was a muslim. If BO didn't like it he could have changed it for $75 years ago. It's not like Daddy Obama was around to complain. And what happened to Barry? That's what they called him in highschool. Either McCain is so afraid of being called a racist, he's trying to be uber sensitive to Obama's feelings.

Redneck hypocrites

"Hating red neck hypocrites"; Interesting. I dont know anything about being a red neck, especially living in N.Y.C; but- I will say this. With all due respect sir, your ignorant remarks do nothing to "praise" African Americans. When Obama gets into office? No. 1- that wont happen. 2- I sincerely doubt, that he is just going to embrace every African American, because they are just that. If he is any kind of stand-up guy, he would treat everyone the same. Republicans have more hate in our hearts than anybody?; why?; because of our party affiliation? More and more of your own ignorance comes out with each statement. Pack up and leave the "changed" U.S.A?; so you can "love one another.." O.k- who has hate in theyre heart? Another fine example of reverse racism my friend.. be well. Mccain-Palin "08"

This is Ridiculous

Disparaging someone for the name they were given at birth, and using it to try to paint them with a particular ideology is slimy at best. A "foreign sounding name" depicts NOTHING about a person's beliefs. It's just like saying anyone named "Lance" or "Bruce" is gay, or anyone named "Juan" is an illegal alien. Grow up, people. We're embroiled in one of the most important elections in American history, and all you can come up with is name games!!!

You are absolutely correct sir. To "spotlight" Mr. Obama's name is not right. Matter of fact; I just watched senator Mccain a little while ago, and he personally denounces any such "motive". We cant sink to the far-left liberal levels.

The Truth About Barack Obama
Some things every American should know about Sen. Barack Obama.

Did you know that Barack Obama is a devout Christian? He has been a member of the same United Church of Christ congregation for 20 years, and was married there to his wife Michelle in 1992.

Did you know that Barack Obama often leads the US Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance?
Did you know that Barack Obama is a strong friend of Israel and has spoken out strongly against anti-Semitism?

Did you know his grandparents from Kansas were part of the “Greatest Generation?. His grandfather served with Patton’s Army during World War II, and his grandmother, a real “Rosy the Riveter”, worked in a bomber assembly plant back home.

Did you know that Barack Obama was opposed to the war in Iraq from day one, before we invaded, even while he was running for the Senate, and knowing his opposition might be politically unpopular?

“I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world and strengthen the recruitment arm of al Qaeda. I am not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.” –Barack Obama, 2002

Did you know Obama favors transparency over secrecy in our government? Did you know that Obama worked with Republican Senator Tom Coburn to pass one of the strongest government transparency bills since the freedom of information act? He’s calling it Google for Government and you can see the results at www.usaspending.gov. Sen. Obama has also released his own tax returns for public review.

Did you know that after graduating with honors from Harvard Law School, Barack practiced civil rights law and also taught Constitutional Law for 10 years at the University of Chicago, one of the nation’s best law schools, where he was consistently rated by his students as one of their best instructors? Did you also know that he was the first African-American elected president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review?

Did you know that Barack Obama is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and has been a principled defender of the civil rights of women?

Did you know that despite the grueling schedule of running for President, Senator Obama remains a devoted family man, making time to do things like pick out a Christmas tree with his wife and two young daughters, or hurrying home to spend Valentine’s Day with them? Did you know he hasn’t missed a single parent-teacher conference while running for President?

Did you know that Barack Obama has a stellar environmental record, including having the highest rating from the League of Conservation Voters (96%) of any Presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican?

Did you know that Barack Obama has been an elected legislator longer than Senator Clinton?

Did you know that Barack is a member of all of these Senate Committees: Foreign Relations; Veteran’s Affairs; Health, Education, Labor & Pensions; Homeland Security and Government Affairs?

Did you know that Senator Obama has sponsored or co-sponsored 15 bills that have become law, and has introduced amendments to 50 bills, of which 16 were adopted since he joined the Senate in 2005?

Did you know that Senator Obama sponsored legislation working together with Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar, to keep Americans safe by keeping dangerous weapons out of terrorist hands? The two senators also visited the former Soviet Union to inspect the decommissioning of nuclear weapons. Sen. Lugar said of Sen. Obama, “He does have a sense of idealism and principled leadership, a vision of the future.”

Did you know that Barack Obama is the only candidate running for president who voted against using cluster bombs in Iraq and the only candidate who supports banning the use of landmines?

Did you know that, as an Illinois state senator, Barack Obama succeeded in passing legislation requiring the videotaping of police interrogations, gaining the respect and support not only of fellow legislators but that of the police, who had initially opposed the legislation?

Did you know that Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Ulysses S. Grant, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton were all younger when they took office than Barack Obama will be?
During election season many emails are circulated about the candidates. Some are true, some aren’t. It’s often difficult to determine the truth. We encourage you to visit the following non-partisan sites that do a good job of fact checking the candidates.

I think that it is wrong and

I think that it is wrong and disrespectful to make stupied allegations and accusations over a persons middle name. My middle name is Husein does that make me a terrorist or my father one. It is just a name and even if his father was not in the picture it is his name and no one should ever try to make one feel shame for a name that belongs and was given by a parent. Just becasue you dont own that name makes it ok for you to say he could have changed it. I would never change my name to please who? closed and narrow minded people like yourself who feel that the world revolve around your close minded opinions. Before you go and suggest a person changing their name you should maybe if it is possible put yourself in their shoes. It's disgusting really how ridiculous you are.

Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 10/09/2008 - 01:39

No it's ridiculous to get upset and cry racism or fear mongering simply because someone said the Candidates full name, you should know that often at rallies John Sidney McCain is announced. So is that racist, against I don't know Austrailians?

Your candidate is named Barack Hussein Obama. Period.

MIckey (not verified) | Thu, 10/09/2008 - 14:10

It's not just about his name

Those crying foul are not crying foul solely because of his name, it's the association that the GOP is putting with his name. They say his name then they say terrorism; It is in bad form especially when you have people in the crowd shouting "kill him", "treason" and "sit down boy." It is done to inspire fear and hatred. This country needs to move forward, not go back to the Jim Crow days. This behavior does make me reconsider my vote.

Charmz (not verified) | Thu, 10/09/2008 - 17:11

Baloney!

You're full of cr*p, Mickey! John McCain has NEVER been introduced as "John Sidney McCain". It wouldn't fit in with the "common folk maverick" image his campaign is trying to put forth. But it IS very Republican of you to just make up "facts" in support of your argument. Now, get a life!

Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 10/09/2008 - 19:05

Feigned Ignorance

Are you in denial or do you really believe the things you have expressed? Does everyone who has a name that sounds "foreign" or more specifically "Muslim" have to put up with this degree of ignorance because of freedom of speech? Mr. Obama is dealing with what many Jews who changed their names had to deal with in the past. Some change their names in an attept to avoid the anti semitism in the United States and Europe.

The bottom line is that the issue is NOT about the use of his name that is problematic, it is the intent behind the use of his name at the rallies. How many people refer to any public politician by the their entire birth name? Yes, the entire names the two president Bushes are often used with the intention of making a distinction between the two. John Sidney McCain hardly illicits the same reaction of someone with the name Hussein amongst many in this country.

Bottom line, so what his name is Barack Hussein Obama, so what? Why does it bother YOU so much?

Using Obama's middle name

Hussein is Barrack's middle name, that is a fact. That he does not wish it used and thereby John should not do so is purely ridiculous.. He says he is not a Muslim , that he is a Christian, yet, when asked what he was , automatically he said "I am a Muslim", then quickly changed it and said, "No, I am a Christian". Psychologically, what he was or is up for debate. But, his name is Hussein and Mc Cain should use it as he sees fit. He does not like it, tough, he has more then enough to hide, he just is not doing it well enough Let Barry call John anything he wants, it's time for John to take off the gloves to keep Barrack Hussein Obama out of the White House

Comments like these are really troubling.Where do you guys get this stuff from? And THEN after you hear THESE LIES what then makes you believe THEM? Obama has never once said he is Muslim.. He has always flatly stated himself as a Christian...I READ HIS BOOK "Dreams from My Father" back in 1998 where he talks explicitly about religion, being raised by his white grandparents and his belief in Jesus..Maybe you should get a copy

Republican Tactics

In the recent week or two, I have been left wondering if John McCain really does endorse this type of campaign strategy or not. He remained above most of the smear thy oppenent tactics but I have seen that as the fight for voters gets tighter and tighter the strategy has changed. This leaves me to wonder...does Senator McCain approve of these methods now as he is seeing this as possibly his last fleeting chance at victory or has he just become as much of a political pawn as his running mate? Either way, it doesn't do much for the issue of character I suppose.

Curious (not verified) | Wed, 10/08/2008 - 21:08

No, McCain is just out and out disrespectful

Republicans are big on appearance in their private and public lives, thus McCain crying "foul" so at least it APPEARS he wants to run a clean campaign. However, watch McCain during the debates; his disrepect is in the forefront. He will not even LOOK at Obama, and in the second debate last night he referred to Obama as "that one", and he refused to shake Obama's hand at the end of the debate. McCain may want to APPEAR decent, but he showed his TRUE COLORS front and center in last night's debate.

nikolai (not verified) | Wed, 10/08/2008 - 21:21

True Colors

I agree that McCain has been showing more and more of his true colors. I think that he is completely old school in thought in regards to both race and sex. I first thought this when he and his campaign staff deliberately used Sarah Palin as a side show attraction. Choosing her did not say to me as a woman voter that I have trust that a woman can get the job done, but rather I will use a woman to get whatever gains I possibly can. Then the refusal to look at Obama, his facial expressions, his body language...just about everything tells me that he has little to no respect for "That one". I do not believe that McCain is outright prejudice, at least he doesn't want to believe that he is, but I believe that it an undercoat.

Not That Girl | Wed, 10/08/2008 - 22:18

The Real Issues

It is pathetic that when faced with a drop in polling numbers that McCain/Palin cannot rely on their own records and platforms but must go beyond negative campaining to playing on peoples fears and insecurities. How is it okay to incite a crowd to hysteria where they are calling out terrorist, kill him? This is not a witch hunt, it is a presidential election. Maybe this is how they behave in Alaska with shout-outs at their government meetings, and promoting fear and hate. Can't we as a nation do better than this? Let's talk about the real issues and stop trying to tear the other candidate down. Like it or not one of these men will be our next president and as such they deserve our respect.

Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 10/08/2008 - 23:19

He's making a public

He's making a public statement to take the heat off of himself if something horrible should happen to Obama. He in no way, "cares" if it would, but he is very "aware" of the dire consequences in which would follow if it were to happen. I seriously think it would tear this country apart. He's already used he reverse psychology on the people. Used their fear against Obama. He is way too erratic, deceitful, manipulative, ect. for me to vote for him. If he would have ran an honest campaign, stuck to the facts, his agenda, carried himself with respect for others, and the same for Palin, I would have like them. Not voted for them, but liked them as humans and respected what their visions of success would be. But seeing them, hearing them, knowing what power they would have if they should win, makes me seriously ill to my stomach. God pity them if their smear tactics sets someone off to hurt Obama or his family. There will be no helping them if that were to happen.

Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 10/09/2008 - 00:03

he's making it public

I agree with you, i wasnt too much involved in the debates but for some reason i suddenly am paying more attention. Probably has to do with the craziness that has been going on. BUt i agree that their tactics to getting votes are cheap and down right negative possibly cause harm to Obama and his family. What makes this ok? To attack someones character based on his middle name. God if that where the case then we should judge people based solely on their apperance and not on their abilities. Or may i dont like that name and off with their heads. As far as i see it McCain and his campaign going to far and people need to realize that. Its almost like being honest doesnt matter anymore. Gaining respect means nothing. i look at the McCain strategy and think to my self wow they behave like high schoolers trashing the other for their own personal gain.

Republicans chanting 'Kill

Republicans chanting 'Kill him, Kill him' at rallies? Please! It's a sad thing, but the Democrat party has been hi-jacked by the extreme left wing. Truthfully, most folks in the US are middle of the roaders, they are not violent, or stupid, and it's pretty insulting and intollerant of you (given your's is 'the party of tollerance'!) to call them hating extremists, when they are typically not the ones trying to isolate out special interest victim groups, to complain that things aren't fair for them, or who believe they should be rewarded with the fruits of someone else's labors just because they exist. Life isn't fair, we aren't all created equal - but with regard to opportunity, everyone should have equal chance. There are always going to be people who are smarter, faster, taller, more stout, skinnier, stronger, weaker, etc. than others. Plain fact. Not everyone can be a football star, and not everyone can be an astrophysicist - we don't all have the same abilities. I believe that most people in this country just want to work at a good job, raise their families, pay their fair share of taxes (not be punished for working hard), and try to manage their daily lives without hurting other folks. The Democrats like to paint themselves as more tollerant and for 'the little guy' - but they often demonstrate extreme intollerance through shouting others down, name calling, belittling and/or trying to suppress differing opionions, not paying attention to facts, whining when their own words are used against them, complaining that vetting of their candidates is unfair and racist (really?, geez these are only the highest offices in the land, shouldn't we know what the candidates are about, how they vote, what they have accomplished, what they believe?) trying to destroy their opponents reputations, and making race and sex issues where they are clearly not. To achieve equality, we need to stop singling out people for their race, sex, or political affiliation - we need to stop creating balkanized victim groups with a 'help me, I am not capable of helping myself' mentality. We are all first citizens of the US - we need to support our country, to respect diversity, but PROMOTE unity. We DO still have freedom of speech in this country, to try to suppress or intimidate someone from using another person's middle name in speech because you think it is offensive or derogatory gets into the dangerous territory - and we better think carefully where this will lead. Thought police? Energy police? Fairness police? Freedom of speech is a constitutional right - a basic tenet of our FREE nation. If we don't understand or abuse the basic rights granted to us by the constitution, we and future generations are in real danger of losing them. Healthcare is not a constitutional right, nor is the right to not to be offended by someone else's speech. It is sad and dangerous that most of his supporters don't really know the first thing about him or what he really supports. Please do your homework, make an effort to understand BHO's compass before follow in his direction.

Re: Chanting to kill in crowds in public is wrong. Period.

I don't care what party its for, its wrong, morally and every other way. Here's how it works; my rights end when my arm starts twisting the arm next to me. Inciting a crowd to do bodily harm isn't campaigning; its Hitlerizing (I can make up words just like W.)
I don't want thought police, I want common sense in the public arena. Thats why there are laws regarding this issue, already on the books. So what if McCain and his people have to be arrested for inciting to riot. They should have thought of that when they opened this can of worms.
P.S. Health care of course, isn't a right, its a privilege according to market forces in this country. But we've seen what market forces are wreaking upon us these days....so uh....I think I will work towards making health care a right. Great thing about our constitution is....it can be changed, it can be added to. Done it before. As a woman, I didn't have the right to vote until the 20th century.
Thanks for the heads up on studying the candidates. Fortunately, I don't do sound bites and do not calling reading several sources an "elite" thing. Obama is my guy all the way.

Ignorance.

They continually try to smear Obama and tie him to terrorists and the like. Yet, I'm sure if you asked these dolts who John Sununu is, they wouldn't have a clue. Yes, my friends, Sununu (R-NH)is an Arab-American. Where are your racist comments now? After all, those were Arabs who hijacked those planes on 9/11, not the Iraqis. Thankfully, smarter Republicans and the majority of Democrats don't believe in guilt by association and/or how one is called (named). But I must say, we have reason to be concerned and afraid of those who do. The similarity of that group of Republicans to those of the Islamic extremist are too much alike.

The November 2008 election

I am not yet a US citizen. I am Canadian and going through the process to become American, because I believe that America is truly is the greatest country in the world and I want my vote to make a difference. I'm glad I have the freedom to say this: This election scares me. I saw how slowly our (as Canadians) ability to make our own decisions were taken from us in Canada with nationalized "everything", becoming more socialistic than anything with the healthcare system etc.. I believe that John McCain would be a safer choice than Mr. Obama just because I've seen what happens when things become too liberal. I have lived the difference. Mr. Obama seems like a decent and good person. He's looking to change things though. And I don't believe it for the good of all Americans. Please also research other countries, taxes and freedoms before making your decision to vote next month.

november election

Thank you for your input and it is nice to see folks take interest, but I have lived in this country for 47 years and have watched this nations fear and scare tactics push our nation towards some soft form of neo-fascist mentality, and the fear and self-righteousness of any party based on the drive that god or any deity has given them moral authority over the people is headed for the same garbage as the taliban , hammas and all the other zealot fanatic states.
Neither party has the lock on dirt, nor honesty, but if the only choices in this election come down to social conservatism and single minded and semi-bigottry being the campaign norm, I choose the Obama ticket , so at the worst, there will still be some freedoms and opportunity to make changes in the future. With Mccain and Palin zealots and fanatics will turn this nation into the next inquisition and the reconstruct of the old "Red-Coats" we fought to remove when we penned our constitution...

Obama's Middle Name

McCain's recent efforts to quell the tide of biggots from overemphasizing Obama's middle name is simply too little too late. The kind of hatred spewing from McCain's campaign is the kind that caused an innocent black man in England who wore an Obama Campaign Tee-Shirt to be killed. Apologize to him and his family.

be honest with yourselves folks

PUH-LEEEEZZ...
come on folks what are you infants... only a really self-dillusional person would think that the way the Palin rallies have been staged and the use of "Hussein" and "do we know him?", with that fake condesending smirk was not intended to bring fear, race and hate into this debate. How sad to see a governor of any state of this great nation loving it when the crowd gets all zealot and mob-mentality. Please has the GOP suddenly gone Nazi party on us?? This is how you start riots and hate in a nation that has REAL PROBLEMS not fake ones that only far extremist fanatics want to dominate the media. if in facvt Obama was an evil terrorist McCain would have gone after him years ago, and he never would ahve even made the senate or the current level of electorial placement he is in now... grow up and stop telling boogy=man stories to scrae your flock....
