Obama’s Elitist Cheeseburger With Mustard

May 7, 2009
By

Conservative talk radio has been smoldering the air waves today with criticism of President Barack Obama over his choice of condiments. The fact that Obama ordered a cheeseburger for lunch yesterday with Dijon mustard, not ketchup is proof to them that the president is an un-American elitist. Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Steyn have all criticized Obama’s burger.

Here is Hannity:

Hannity called Obama’s enjoyment of spicy mustard elitist behavior. He suggested that the president was not an everyman.

Here is Ingraham:

Laura Ingraham questioned Obama’s manhood for not getting ketchup on his burger. Interestingly, she also used the Grey Poupon reference that Sean Hannity
did. I smell a talking point.

Here is Steyn:

Mark Steyn complained that John Kerry could not get away with having a burger with Dijon mustard. He complained that King Barack was eating a hamburger just like regular people. Steyn didn’t the memo though because he did not use
the Grey Poupon clip.

Why is talk radio still fighting the 2008 election? They are still desperately failing around in hopes of finding a criticism that will stick to Obama. This all goes back to one of the GOP’s old standards, Obama is an elitist. In a great piece, Media Matters coined the phrase Dijon Derangement Syndrome to describe what right wing talk radio is up to.

We get it. You think Obama is an elitist, and you will revive this same attack in 2012, after it failed so completely in 2008. Is the tank really that empty on the right that they have to get outraged by what Barack Obama puts on his cheeseburger? Isn’t there a single issue out there that is more important than spicy mustard? This is sad and pathetic.

The strategy seems to be to convince Americans to turn on Obama because he likes mustard……MUSTARD. (I can picture the ad showing Bin Laden eating a burger with mustard.) I am sure the powerful mustard lobby can’t be happy about this. They even turned it into a talking point. Can you believe that it was only a couple of years ago that these people were in charge of the government?

This is the best they have? The fuddy-duddys in the grey poupon commercial are probably on the fence on this one. On one side their condiment is being dissed, on the other Obama just shifted the tax burden on the working class onto them.

I’ve always considered myself a regular guy, but this dust up over Obama’s condiment choice has me worried. I have on occasion eaten hamburgers from fast food joints, and my experience is that they often have ketchup AND mustard, as well as a pickle. Now, does the presence of the mustard make this an elitist sandwich, or does the ketchup cancel out the mustard? I suspect that I wouldn’t get a gold star as a Regular Joe for partaking of the mustard, but I hope that combining it with ketchup at least allows me to avoid a black mark. I think what’s really needed is a comprehensive list (maybe Laura and Sean and Mark could take this on as a project) of which condiments are acceptable for Regular Joes and which are elitist — and on which foods. The list should also address the issue of combined condiments. For example, mayo, ketchup and relish are certainly Regular Joe items individually, but put them together and they might cross the line from condiment to dressing. That sounds rather foppish, don’t you think?

The Left is just keeping this ‘Mustard story’ alive, the Right had a chuckle and moved on. There are many much more important things to criticize this administration about. The Left doesn’t want people focusing on the big stuff, because that’s where it’s most dangerous to them. The Truth will bring them down, God willing.
