Obama Tells McCain to Put Country Ahead of Politics

ImageWhile speaking in Chillicothe, Ohio, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama drew a sharp contrast with John McCain, by the turning the Republican’s Country First slogan against him by saying that the nation is in crisis, and it is time to put country ahead of politics.

“I think that folks are looking for something different. It’s easy to rile up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that’s not what we need right now in the United States. The times are too serious. The challenges are too great. The American people aren’t looking for someone who can divide this country – they’re looking for someone who will lead it. We’re in a serious crisis - now, more than ever, it is time to put country ahead of politics. Now, more than ever, it is time to bring change to Washington so that it works for the people of this country that we love,” Obama said.

This is an interesting statement because it works on multiple levels. He is framing himself as the candidate who is the person to lead the nation out of this crisis. The negative ads that McCain is running also play into Obama’s theme of a new kind of politics. He has managed to reverse roles with McCain, and appear to be the candidate who is putting country first. Obama is painting McCain as only being interested in winning this election which was an attack that the McCain campaign used against Obama in late summer.

Obama is also trying to demonstrate that he is in tune with the concerns of average people, “I know my opponent is worried about his campaign. But that’s not what I’m concerned about. I’m thinking about the Americans losing their jobs, and their homes, and their life savings. We can’t afford four more years of the economic theory that says we should give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else. We can’t afford four more years of less regulation so that no one in Washington is watching anyone on Wall Street. We’ve seen where that’s led us and we’re not going back.”

The roles of the two candidates have changed to the degree that it was Obama who proposed a small business rescue plan. Obama wants to provide a business tax incentive to encourage new investments, and he also proposed the elimination of all capital gains taxes on investments and small businesses and start ups. This is a plan that one would expect from the tax cut obsessed McCain campaign.

The biggest reasons that Obama has taken control of this race are that this crisis has now convinced voters that we need change, and Obama’s response to this crisis has been very presidential. The economic crisis is a chance to evaluate the two candidates’ responses to an unexpected event in real time. Barack Obama is passing this test with flying colors, while John McCain is still struggling to find the answers. If Obama wins this election, it will be the economy that carries him there.

So Well Said That I have Nothing to Add Except to Say,

"I've already voted and it wasn't for McNasty and Friend." In this election at this time in our history Obama-Biden is the only rational choice. Bomb, bomb Iran is not sensible diplomacy and another clueless president with a power hungry veep will do nothing to restore America to 'We the People."

Obama-McCain

Obama arbitrarily defines people who make $250,000 a year as wealthy. I make that,
but after paying for college for my kids for about $100,000 a year, medical insurance,
Federal and State taxes, real estate taxes, mortgage, etc. maybe I have only $35,000-$40,000 a year or so to put away. Get real Obama, you are causing a "class war" by trying to tax the so called "rich". Let's start with number around $1,000,000
a year if you must call someone rich.

AMEN...$250,000 is not the same as $1,000,000!!!!

I am with you...my husband worked very hard to reach the position he has achieved with no help from his father (who ran out on my husband when he was 4 years old)and his mother worked as an elementary school custodian. He put himself through school and college by taking on many jobs. He never enjoyed a summer vacation by the beach (unlike Obama...who happened to live in Hawaii during his younger years!) We now have 3 sons and both my husband an I put them through college (one has graduated, two are still there)...oh allow me to clarify...a State University, NOT HARVARD!!!! And yes, we still had to take a home equity to pay their universities tuition. I am quite upset that Obama puts us in the same bracket with his "HOLLYWOOD" friends. My husband's business can fluctuate very easily during this economic crisis and taxing us more will certainly put some of his employees out on the streets looking for a new job!! CHANGE THAT "WEALTH" NUMBER OBAMA IF YOU WANT TO GET OUR VOTE...and we are five registered voters in our family!

Economic Turbulence......

We are now trapped in economic turbulence and we have to become aware of the different things that are happening in our country. Like for example in this coming presidential election on November 4, We have to choose or become wise in the way we will choose our candidate that will lead and sit in the position. Because if not, in our economic situation these days, their are many people that will lose their job, more of the people will hungry. And more people will lose their homes. To find parallels of the problems of today’s world, we can turn to the annals of history to find solace in what has transpired before and what people did to overcome similar challenges. For instance – is the United States worse off than during the Great Depression? In 1932, America was spiraling into a massive recession, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the newly elected President. His “New Deal” policies restructured the US economy, and expanded the role of government in an unprecedented fashion. The New Deal worked, in the short term, but caused some lasting long term damage. Paul Rubin states in this Wall Street Journal article that the current state of the US economy isn’t in the same shape as in 1932, but many of the same things are there: stock market dropping, credit markets are disappearing, and a popular presidential Democratic candidate – Barack Obama – runs upon a platform that promises to put more governmental regulation on the economy. Obama’s presidency, if elected, will possibly be coupled with a 60-seat majority in the Senate, safe from filibustering, putting the nation as close to a purely liberal government as it ever has been. Those who support a free market economy are rightly concerned that the “hands on” approach promised by the candidate will not deliver the nation from the recession. Those in support of capitalism probably will tell you that we’re going to get exactly what we got in 1932 – a “New, New Deal.”
