Glenn Beck Declares Obama’s Policies to be the Enemies of God

Apparently Glenn Beck has been speaking to God again, because on his radio show today, Beck proclaimed that Obama’s policies are the enemies of God, “The policies that are being enacted in Washington. They are not enemies of ours. They are enemies of God, because God is about freedom.”

While hyping his 8-28 rally, Beck said, “It is not about politics, because quite honestly we are not dealing with politicians. These are not. The policies that are being enacted in Washington, they are not enemies of ours. They are enemies of God, because God is about freedom, not equal stuff in our homes. The Rev. Al Sharpton said equal stuff. That’s God? God thinks of justice as equal stuff? That is one of the most outrageous perversions of the Gospel that I have ever heard.”

Beck is angry at Sharpton because during a speech in May Sharpton called out Beck for trying to hijack Martin Luther King’s legacy. Here is the full quote that Beck could not be bothered to use, “So many of us that act as though the struggle for social justice and the struggle for right is over don’t realize that the struggle is not over until we achieve equality. Someone was saying to me the other day, “Reverend Sharpton, we’ve got an African-American president; we’ve achieved the dream of Dr. King.” And I told him that was not Dr. King’s dream. It’s a great thing. I’ve been working with the president and supporting the president, but the dream was not to put one black family in the White House. The dream was to make everything equal in everybody’s house. President Obama being in the White House can help us get there, but we’re not there yet. ”

Of course, this sent the right wing media, including Beck into howling hysterics, because they assumed that Sharpton meant socialism and material things, but obviously he was referring to the larger concept of equality, which is an idea that is completely uninteresting and foreign to those on the far right. As Media Matters pointed out, Dr. King was in favor of a radical redistribution of wealth. As King said in 1968, “It didn’t cost the nation one penny to integrate lunch counters” and “It didn’t cost the nation one penny to guarantee the right to vote. Now, we are dealing with issues that cannot be solved without the nation spending billions of dollars, and undergoing a radical redistribution of economic power.” I guess this means that MLK is an enemy of God too.

I would love to know what policies of Obama’s specifically are the enemies of God. To my knowledge, the Bible isn’t full of policy positions. In my mind, the values expressed in the Bible if translated to policy would be opposed to the death penalty, not helping the needy, healthcare reform, unemployment benefits extension, and greedy policies like tax cuts for the wealthy and corporate America. The irony is that we have a Mormon on the radio complaining about perversion of the Gospel, when many Christians view the Book or Mormon as a perversion of the gospel.

Beck is doing nothing more than trying to energize the religious right to show up on 8-28. His Washington, D.C. rally is about politics, but more importantly it is also about Glenn Beck, who holds these rallies in the hope of making money. Beck much like Sarah Palin is a con artist, who understands perfectly how to manipulate a segment of conservative America for his own personal gain.

Beck is a predator who exploits an audience that is mostly old white and fearful. The real enemy of God is not Barack Obama. God doesn’t care about politics. The Lord is not worried about capitalism and free markets. God’s real enemies are the people who warp the teachings for their own financial gain, and false prophets like Glenn Beck.
