The Daring Idea of Happiness as GDP

It’s a question of productivity versus happiness as the ultimate judge of the welfare of nations. Yes, this is an argument for a socially just Democracy, or as I like to call it, civilization. Nic Marks must surely be a socialist. At TEDGlobal 2010 he suggested that we would be better off to measure success by happiness rather than productivity. Cue the crazy jihad nut job dance from the Right (plus a Glenn Beck cry fest), but meanwhile, I ask you on this Labor Day, have you ever been to a country where they valued overall contentment of the people over their productivity? Because once you’ve seen it in action, it’s hard to deny the validity of Marks’ inspiration.

The Tea Party’s Success May be Sarah Palin’s Demise

The seduction of the Tea Party for the people on the ground is obvious; they feel politicians are betraying them. They don’t trust Washington. They’re threatened by change. These elements never change; they are always ripe for manipulation by the dirtiest politicians who appeal to fear. All they need is a scapegoat upon which to funnel their impotent rage. Why Can’t Republicans Understand the Constitution?

The Constitution is clear on a couple of things, and one of the most obvious is that it’s not the Old Testament and that you don’t have to think any particular thing about the Old Testament or any other religion to hold office…Republicans don’t seem to get the whole “no religious test” thing, so maybe we need to nudge them along a bit. Alaskans Just Not that Into Sarah Anymore

A Public Policy Polling survey done of Alaskan voters in the Republican senatorial primaries, where Joe Miller appears to be winning in a surprising upset over incumbent Lisa Murkowski reveals that 59% percent of Alaskan voters weren’t moved by Palin’s endorsement. Continue reading

Domestic Violence: The Ultimate Oppressor Of Liberty and Freedom

It’s sort of a dirty little secret that in America, an intimate partner killed approximately 33% of female murder victims and more than 600 women every day are sexually assaulted. And what about the “conservatives” who claim to oppose Islam over the way women are treated don’t seem to give a good hoot what goes on here, in their own country? Here, where women are supposed to be free. Continue reading

The Hackery and Mendacity of a FOX News Legal Propagandist

We should not expect much out of FOX when it comes to reporting the news. Sure, it can be argued that there is no news that is undistorted by spin, but there is spin and there is propaganda, and there is outright fiction. If you are going to step before a camera and say something, it should at least be made clear to the watcher if what you’re saying is fact or fiction. Peter J. Johnson, Jr., graduate of Columbia College and Columbia University’s School of Law and has served them as a legal propagandist since 1997. Continue reading

Republicans Put The Brakes On The Sarah Palin Crazy Train

In what I can only describe as the reverse of the trickle down theory, the Republicans get to know their Mama Grizzly a bit better, more and more of them hop on the Not Fit to Lead bus. As GOP opposition to her grows, establishment conservatives are doing their best to put the brakes on the Palin crazy train. Continue reading

Fox News Hosts a Terrorist to Discuss the Ground Zero Mosque

The GOP media arm and political organization Fox News took to the airwaves today to continue their Fear And Anti-Law Campaign against the Cordoba Center (aka, the scary Mosque of terrorists). In order to really, really scare people, they dipped into their vast pool of political terrorists and came up with this guy, Walid Shoebat. Continue reading

Left Behind: The Obama Appreciation Gap

Your President spent a day in Real America to visit a smart energy grid manufacturing facility that is putting to use 1.3 million dollars in Recovery Act money. While your President was supporting green energy, he also supported keeping manufacturing jobs here in America. Does it never end? Continue reading

Republicans Support Strip Clubs on Ground Zero Sacred Ground

While the constitution forbids prohibiting a mosque from being built blocks away from ground zero (“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”), Republicans are salivating at the prospect of ignoring the constitution (again) and using this for political hay. Apparently, the Family Values Party is not concerned with the strip clubs (like New York Dolls) that surround hallowed ground (after all, we all know that Hooters is a family restaurant and Fox News is not conservative day time porn), because nothing says Christian Values and Apple Pie like a strip club.
