Refudiating The Rogue: 5 Reasons Why Sarah Palin Can’t Win

July 10, 2011
By

Palin Newsweek "I Can't Win"

Contrary to her own claims in Newsweek that she can win in 2012, here are 5 reasons Sarah Palin can’t win a national election.

Here is what Sarah Palin said during an interview in the new issue of Newsweek:

“I believe that I can win a national election…The people of America are desperate for positive change, and deserving of positive change, to get us off of this wrong track. I’m not so egotistical as to believe that it has to be me, or it can only be me, to turn things around, but I do believe that I can win.”

It’s time for a little reality check, so here are 5 reasons why Sarah Palin can’t win a national election.

5). Paul Revere
– Sarah Palin has made a lot of gaffes. Many of them have involved US history, but none were so glaring as her now infamous retelling of the story of Paul Revere’s midnight ride. The gaffe matters for two reasons. It reaffirmed America’s perception of Sarah Palin as intellectual lightweight who will never be up to the task of the presidency, and just as importantly, when Palin refused to admit her mistake and doubled down on being wrong, she evoked memories of George W. Bush and his inability to admit a mistake in any circumstances. If her goal was to remind everyone of one of the worst presidents in history….mission accomplished.

4). Tina Fey – Yes, you read that right. Nothing can shape the public perception of a political figure as much as satire. Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin impression reinforced everything that Palin demonstrated in the Couric and Gibson interviews. Fey has portrayed Palin as the ultimate ditzy political lightweight who is happy to get by on a wink and a jiggle. (The reality is that Palin isn’t stupid. She like many in the modern Republican Party has zero intellectual curiosity, and would rather substitute her religious beliefs for knowledge).

Politicians never shake the pop culture perceptions of themselves. George H.W. Bush will always be a wimp, Dan Quayle an idiot, Gerald Ford a clumsy buffoon, George W. Bush a good time loving frat boy president, Al Gore is forever the dull, know it all nerd, and Bill Clinton the perennial tail chaser. One these caricatures become accepted in our popular culture, they never go away. Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin is what many Americans see and hear when the real Sarah Palin is on television.

Before anyone blames Tina Fey too much, remember it was Sarah Palin who provided her material.

3). Blood Libel
– In the wake of the Gabby Giffords shooting, America got its first look at the real Sarah Palin when she responded to the tragedy by releasing a video full of nothing but self-absorbed martyrdom. Palin criticized Obama. Palin whined about the media, and even worse she used the phrase blood libel which is a loaded term usually used to falsely accuse Jews of murdering children for their religious blood rituals. The image of Palin the hockey mom was shattered from this moment forward, and no amount of reality TV can erase the ugliness that was the Blood Libel video.

2). Palin’s Bad Poll Numbers – There is a myth that at one time Sarah Palin enjoyed a sustained burst of national popularity, which her defenders claim that she only needs to recapture in order to be a serious national candidate. After the disasters that were the Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson interviews in 2008, 55%-59% of voters said that Palin was not qualified to be president. Palin’s personal popularity has declined even more since the campaign. The most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal found Sarah Palin’s approval rating to be 24%. Palin even has an upside down approval rating in her home state of Alaska.

Sarah Palin is not unfamiliar with a 60% or higher disapproval rating. She is least popular non-scandal ridden politician in the country. Her numbers are consistently bad. They sunk during the 2008 campaign and never resurfaced. In potential head to head match ups with Obama she consistently loses by 20 or more points. There is no polling data to support Palin’s claim that she could win.

Sarah Palin may be right. She could win a national election, just not in the United States.

1). Duh, Quitting
– Nothing damaged Sarah Palin more than when she stepped to the microphone at a surprise press conference on July 3, 2009 and promptly abandoned her oath to the people of Alaska. For the last two years, Palin has been trying with no success to undo the political damage that her quitting did to her reputation.

She carries the stigma of quitting where ever she goes. When she posts on Facebook, she is a quitter. If she hasn’t tweeted in a while, she is a Twitter quitter. After the news came out that she put her bus tour on hiatus, she was once again labeled a quitter. In the eyes of many in the Republican Party, Palin is erratic, undependable, and can’t be trusted. The question that Americans ask themselves is if she quit on Alaska why wouldn’t she quit on us? Palin can release all the books, movies, and TV shows as she wants be she will never be able to live down quitting.

Before the press gets buzzing with the will she or won’t she run talk, it is important to keep in mind that no matter what Palin believes, she can’t win. Palin has to keep the mystery alive for the sake of her viability as a marketable brand, but even if she runs and becomes the Republican nominee, Sarah Palin can’t beat Barack Obama in a national election.

I agree that $arah Palin could never win the presidency. But I also hope you’ll agree with m that y’all need to hire some PROOFREADERS!

    • Jason Easley on July 10, 2011 at 8:35 pm

      Thanks, I fixed the mistake.

On the topic of proofreaders, give me the money, and I’ll be glad to. Even better, you could VOLUNTEER!!! :) (You get no pay and lots of hours. Sound good?)

      • Rebecca on July 10, 2011 at 9:31 pm

I’d be willing to do it.

P.S. There were a few more typos I spotted, but don’t worry, it didn’t detract from your point.

        • Sarah Jones on July 10, 2011 at 10:07 pm

You are hired, Rebecca! Send an email to the contact us form please. Thanks.

I have never seen anyone as arrogant as Sarah Palin. She says she can win in 2012, yet has not even entered the race. The picture on the cover of ‘Newsweek’ says it all. She wants to be admired and adored as a sexy object who really believes that the world will bow at her feet. If God told her that she could be president, why on earth doesn’t she enter the race and get it over with?

This woman is driving most people nuts and she enjoys every minute of it.

    • AFM on July 10, 2011 at 9:14 pm

Everything you said about her is right. She will run. Remembrer this is the same woman who faked a baby and pimped her kids out in public. She only cares about Sarah.

    • wiscogal on July 11, 2011 at 8:15 am

That is exactly what I was thinking when I saw that picture. How many serious candidates for the US presidency pose like that for the cover of a national news magazine? Wink.. nod… jiggle… run tongue over lips…presidential material??? you betcha!!

  4. Reynardine on July 10, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Well, and subnormal, dissolute, amoral, lying family. We’ve seen all the Baby Jukeses. All we need is President Mama Jukes.

  5. Conservative Heart on July 10, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Sarah Messiah can definitely win. God is behind her and that’s all she needs.

Maybe if liberals started believing in God, they can finally win some elections too.

    • berbransan on July 10, 2011 at 8:16 pm

God tells all the republican candidates they can win is He seriously screwing with them..I think He has a sense humor or Hes lying to someone

    • zumpie on July 10, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Ummmm, can’t believe I’m dignifying such silliness with a reply, but here goes:

1)Soooo I guess God WASN’T behind her in 2008, huh? Though I do seem to recall all you fundies insisting that her victory was assured, then as well.

      2) Besides your naive insistance, how do you know God’s behind Sarah? As someone raised Episcopalian, my version of Christian God is very different from Sarah’s (or clearly, yours). Not to mention, Sarah lies alot, I thought God wasn’t cool with that.

      3) There are plenty of progressives who believe in God.

      4) Were you not around in 2006 when Dems reclaimed the House and Senate or 2008, when they increased their majorities in both houses AND took the White House? While we did lose the house in 2010, Boner’s current stubborn poses are not translating well with the American people. Many polls indicate Dems will resweep next year.

So that’s “libruls” 2, possibly 3—fundies 1. Guess God has OUR back, not yours!

      • Reynardine on July 10, 2011 at 10:09 pm

She thought Gghod was behind her, butt… (censored)

    • Ingarose on July 10, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I have to believe that there are quite a few liberals who do believe in God, or a higher being. The difference might be that they (the liberals) do not use God or Jesus as some king of bargaining chips to win elections. Anyhow, why can’t we leave religion out of government? But if we insist on bringing religion into government, lets get serious and real. Most major religions believe in justice, love, helping ones fellow being etc. Those WONDERFUL Palin christians seem to only believe in hate and retributions.

    • honestyingov on July 10, 2011 at 8:57 pm

Uhh… excuse me..? What political Party is God a member of? And is he a registered Voter somewhere.

The only Elections or Polls where she seems to come out ahead is where her Followers can vote 100x’s of times… ala DWTS voting.

LouSarah doesn’t have enough Friends to write phony letters to the Editor ( to every newspaper in the US )to skew public opinion and talk about herself as to what a nice person she is.
Frank Bailey in ” Blind Allegiance” thoroughly debunked HOW she got her early high approval ratings right after being elected.
It had nothing to do with How she governed or her policies.
Smoke and Mirrors… that’s a con-artists tools of the trade.

    • majii on July 10, 2011 at 11:04 pm

I’m a liberal and a lifelong Christian, but my Christianity isn’t anything like the “c”hristianity that many conservatives seem to practice–public displays of Christianity, a willingness to abuse women, the poor, kids, and seniors, hating their fellow man, worshiping guns over God, and telling lies among other things are NOT the things my Bible says Jesus believed in. As far I am concerned, winning elections using “c”hristianity and losing one’s soul in the process is too high a price for me to pay. Anyone who is a Christian in the true sense of the word would have nothing at all to do with tea partiers and/or republicans. One who calls him/herself by Christ’s name and chooses to follow those who are Christians in name only while knowing they’re doing wrong, deserve to be rejected by God at their judgment because this is what Christ taught will happen to him/her.

      • gsb on July 11, 2011 at 9:04 am

Majii: Thank you .You have said what many have thought.

    • Cromagnon on July 11, 2011 at 8:51 am

Republiklans will always use GOD to get the non-thinking religious nuts to vote for them. If they ever use reason a logic (intellect) in their campaigns they would never win.

    • LeahJ on July 11, 2011 at 10:19 am

Uh, excuse me, but I believe in God and so do many other liberals. Please prove your assertion that liberals don’t believe in God. Second, I hear from God just like Sarah does, and GE assured me that someone like her, so uncaring of the people, will never win a national election in this country.
Do you want to argue with God now? My you conservatives are arrogant and small minded, believing God only exists for you. What a sad pathetic way to look at fellow human beings who merely have different political views. I’ll pray for you.

      • LeahJ on July 11, 2011 at 10:21 am

I meant to say He assured me, not GE. Darn typos.

    • Darklady on July 11, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Start winning elections? You mean like that 2008 presidential election that Palin and McCain lost?

  6. Jolene on July 10, 2011 at 8:12 pm

I think Reason #6 should be: Sarah Palin’s narrow-minded, reactionary, and jingoistic world-views are not in sync with the majority of Americans, who are for the most part generous, progressive, future-minded and peace-loving folks. At least I devoutly hope that is true.

  7. Tom on July 10, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Reason #6 which as tie-in to #5 is Palin is much too lazy to do the hard work of a presidential campaign. She has quit everything in her past when the going got tough.

    • Jolene on July 10, 2011 at 8:33 pm

And will she dare have the courage to face the media, answer questions at a live press conference, debate other candidates without pre-packaged questions and answers? Nah, she’ll just loosen another button on her sweater to keep the tease going for her bots. And keep raking in the dough, so in a way, she is ‘winning.’

      • Donal on July 11, 2011 at 9:51 am

Loosen another button? She’ll have to get down to her Spanx and cellulite to hang on to the “dirty old man” followers she already has drooling around at her appearances. Her “charm” is rapidly morphing into physical and mental degradation. Can hardly wait for the meltdown…

  8. Shiva on July 10, 2011 at 8:41 pm

Hockey mom? Didnt Track live in Michigan during his formulative hockey stick years? Uh huh

Lets face it. The woman has folowers but everyone else knows what a loon she is. She has not presented one piece of positive plan since she was picked to run for VP. She has criticisms but is totally unable to say what she would do. She has nothing and that gets you nowhere’s. She is for all intents and purposes unavailable.

Hows that hopey changey thing! Well kids, when thats the best plan you can come up with you wont make it to the debates

    • majii on July 10, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Yes, he did, Shiva. It was alleged that it was because he got into some kind of trouble with a group of his friends that involved vandalism.

  9. zumpie on July 10, 2011 at 8:42 pm

I always love how fundies like to convince themselves that they could’ve won in 2008, cause they were up in the polls for a hot 2 weeks. Yeah, okay, total collapse made it easier for Obama–but guess what, even freakin’ Bob Dole led Clinton in the polls right after the Republican National Convention. It’s called a post convention bounce.

Obama steadily led McCain well before the convention and after Sarah’s shiny facade quickly wore off, no one wanted to know from her. The puggies still would’ve lost: these are the same candidates who called their opponent “that one” in a debate and spent over $150K on clothes in the space of a few weeks.

Not to mention, in 2012 there will be more “throw the bums out” in the house–this time it will be Puggies who suffer. And let’s not forget, Florida is ours and with always Prez blue Pennsylvania, that’s all we need!

  10. CW in LA on July 10, 2011 at 9:11 pm

I must respectfully disagree with Mr. Easley: Sarah Palin is, in fact, dumber than a sack of doorknobs. It’s true that there are distressingly large swaths of the US public who’ve found that trait admirable at least since the age of St. Ronnie. But recent polls seem to indicate with the Paul Revere fiasco that there may yet be a line of dumbness many Dumbassistani-Americans are reluctant to cross.

    • Boscoe on July 11, 2011 at 12:35 pm

I agree. I think she’s *shrewd* in a carnival barker sense, but definitely terminally dumb. I defy anyone who thinks she has a shred of intelligence to show me one thing she’s ever said that sounded halfway intelligent that wasn’t either rehearsed, pre-recorded, or prepared in advance. Even Bachmann is capable of answering off-the-cuff questions.

Anytime Palin gets hit with a question she hasn’t prepared for, no matter how basic, she gets that caught-in-the-headlights look and FAILS. Did you notice how fast she ran away from the reporter who asked what she learned about Revere? Did you hear the way her voice went oddly hypersonic as she clearly fumbled for something, anything to say?

Same thing happened when she crashed the MSNBC after party and was asked who her favorite journalist was. Any person with a *shred* of intelligence could come up with better answers for those questions and ones like “what do you read”. It amazes me that there’s anyone out there stupid enough to want someone like that to run the country.

She knows how to push buttons, but that’s about it. And that doesn’t require “smart”, any elementary school bully has that skill.

  11. Ingarose on July 10, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I truly believe that Sarah Palin is a “femme fatale”. Please google the definition, it is very long but suits her to a tee. For short a ‘femme fatale’ is a ‘deadly woman’. There has to be a reason that any time sarah Palin is in the news or written about, the comments reach the stratosphere.

Some people are still taken in by her wiles, yet many resent her for it but are also somewhat afraid because it worked often in the past. Once again, just look at her picture on the cover of ‘newsweek’. Is this the president people would really like? Forget all her stupid utterings etc. just look up ‘femme fatale’ she fits it perfectly.

    • Reynardine on July 10, 2011 at 10:14 pm

The only thing fatale about this femme is the damn crosshairs she draws on her “enemies” and her other incitements to riot.

  12. rm on July 10, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Jason you forgot, Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson interviews- all over Youtube, who can forgot that :)

In her dreams she will win!

    • Boscoe on July 11, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I’m sure in her mind she’ll be the first ever Twitter President. LOL The thing I love about $arah is the more people learn about her, the more they hate her. Please $arah, make some more reality shows and documentaries. I think there’s still ten or fifteen people still posting on C4P…

  13. neil on July 10, 2011 at 10:59 pm

The thing with these evangelicals is they all claim God is telling them what to do but there is no way to prove any of it.Maybe God is telling everyone else that they are full of shit and he’s just pulling their legs.I don’t want people that think God is telling them what to do in charge of any decisions that may impact my life. There should be separation of church and state and if you want to believe that fine but keep your opinions to yourself. These people have come up with so many whacked out ideas and they seem to have a burning desire to force their will on others,Enough of this stupidity, any one of these fools will never get my support for anything.Palin is deluded enough to believe she is the chosen one and I say put up or shut up.Let the voters decide.

    • Shiva on July 10, 2011 at 11:12 pm

God is telling me daily to not believe

    • majii on July 10, 2011 at 11:26 pm

I’ve been thinking that if Palin runs, it will be on a third party ticket. This way she can campaign via FB and tweets and avoid debates and talking one-on-one with members of the media. I just can’t see her campaigning in the traditional manner because she doesn’t like being questioned about anything she does/says and appears to be deathly afraid of the MSM, except for Fox where she can say the moon is bleu cheese and no one will correct her, and if they attempt to do so, she’ll play the victim, and they’ll allow her to get away with it.

      • Shiva on July 10, 2011 at 11:32 pm

Good call. But not enough people will hear her on FB and twitter. The real people are not trolling FB for a presidential candidate

      • Sarah Jones on July 10, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I read her recent cry for help, entitled “Sugar Daddy” re the debt. Very sad – didn’t she fail economics in school? Or get a D? I love how she turns the debt into a sexual thing.

  14. labman57 on July 10, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Palin is not going to run. She has neither the aptitude, nor the fortitude, nor the work ethic necessary and she knows it.

But she does crave the spotlight and lifestyle that comes with being a faux candidate. So she needs to periodically toss out vague hints suggesting that she might run, otherwise the media will pay less attention to her banal speeches, and more importantly, her naive followers will stop buying her books and sending money to SarahPAC.

  15. Cathy on July 10, 2011 at 11:53 pm

With every thing going on in the world, why did Newsweek choose SP as their cover story??? Surely there was something more relevant and newsworthy!

    • Boscoe on July 11, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Apparently not to whatever inbred market share Newsweek is now targeting… ;)

  16. ProChoiceGrandma on July 11, 2011 at 12:08 am

How can Sarah Palin sign the Marriage Vow pledge by The Dear Leader, oh wait, that’s The Family Leader, since she is NOT wearing her wedding ring??

    Another fabulous post, Jason!

    • neil on July 11, 2011 at 4:11 am

What is with the republicans and all these stupid pledges? Can’t any of them think for themselves. They already sold their souls to the devil by embracing the Tea party. If they continue withdoing this they are going to lose relevence if they haven’t already and I don’t want that to happen. For all the foolishness that republicans have become we still need a two party system.Total control by one side or the other is never a good thing. The only problem is as of about the last 30 or so years repubs have gone crazy.

      • Boscoe on July 11, 2011 at 12:44 pm

I think it’s a natural progression. As the population becomes generally more educated, the extreme right has to pump up the volume on it’s bumpersticker slogans to motivate (ie: terrify) the fewer and fewer cretins they still appeal to.

I’m waiting to see if moderate, intelligent Republicans will be able to take their party back from the psychos, or if they’re just going to go down with the Titanic.

  17. Marcos Hernandez on July 11, 2011 at 12:47 am

I think the fact that after all the media has done to bring her down, people STILL feel the need to write articles like “5 Reasons Why Sarah Palin Can’t Win” means that she can INDEED win. Just admit it… Dems are scared she will run… it’s OK… just admit it!

    • Shiva on July 11, 2011 at 12:50 am

No, she cannot win. Her poll numbers nationally are so bad its pathetic. No one is afraid she will run, but you may convince yourself they are. I want her to run, thats a dead easy gimmie for Obama

Your “scared she will run” is all wore out and silly.

    • Sarah Jones on July 11, 2011 at 1:10 am

All that matters is if she believes that — but it seems like she’s preparing to say “My family doesn’t want me to run.” I’m sure this will be blamed on liberals or celebrities who are “seeking her death” — translation, she’s too much of a coward to run but she wants your money.

      • Shiva on July 11, 2011 at 1:16 am

Please send money for the announcement. I need courage to tell c4palin Im not running lol

    • Anne on July 11, 2011 at 9:50 am

No one does a better job of bringing Sarah Palin down than Sarah Palin herself. With all her well-documented gaffes and divisiveness, she has even alienated some of your fellow Republicans. At some level, she realizes that if she runs, she will be crushed. She would not win the GOP nomination at this point, much less the presidency. She might run on a third party ticket, but she would still be defeated. It’s easier for her to string her followers along and continue grifting money from them. And the comment that “Dems are scared she will run” is totally played. There are some who WANT her to run, because they know she would be totally and decisively defeated.

    • zumpie on July 11, 2011 at 10:29 am

OMG! The “you’re scared of her” babble??? Again??? Seriously???? Dude, find some new material.

    • Boscoe on July 11, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Marcos… dude… I realize you’re living in a world constructed entirely out of personal beliefs informed by nothing. But just LOOK at the comments on these blogs. We’d LOOOOVVVE for Palin to run ! LOVE IT! C’mon $arah, I dare you! DARE YOOOOUUUU!

I’ve been saying it for two years: she ain’t running. Everything she’s done has been to line her pockets, and nothing else. She’s had TONS of opportunities to improve her image by showing the slightest scrap of knowlege or interest in ANYTHING happening in the world, and she’s done ZERO.

Let me know when you see an interview where she doesn’t just talk about herself and actually promotes any kind of REAL idea for improving anything. (No, calling “The Dutch” to help solve an oil spill with their “world renowned dike-building skills” doesn’t count) It’s easy to tear down others, a LEADER offers a clear, viable path to a solution.

I know that’s hard to understand before you’ve been weaned off of your steady diet of bumpersticker slogans, but trust me, it takes more than a snarky one-liner to solve anything.

But we both know what’s really happening here. Look Marcos, buddy, you’re NEVER going to get into Palin’s panties. It’s OK… just admit it.

  18. rodney Morgan on July 11, 2011 at 1:01 am

    Palin is an Idiot.

  19. NamelessGenXer on July 11, 2011 at 9:25 am

Because her attempt at a Playboy cover pose for Newsweek is marred by her saggy jowels and bad 80s tattoed lipliner?

Or possibly because of her war on actual feminists like me? This imbecile is an insult to my womanhood, and my humanity, and is not qualified to scrub the toilets in my small business.

    • Donal on July 11, 2011 at 10:05 am

So you’re looking for a toilet scrubber? Surely this is a stimulus success story ;)

      • NamelessGenXer on July 11, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Actually, I already have a cleaning service for the business I started 16 years ago. You?

  20. shel3364 on July 11, 2011 at 11:44 am

    She’s certifiable.

  21. prddem on July 11, 2011 at 12:40 pm

“I’m not so eqotistical to believe it should be me…..” OHHHH, YES SHE IS!

  22. Bill on July 11, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Here’s the real problem…… The mea needs to give Palin exactly what she doesn’t want … that being the cold shoulder. If the media would ignore her …. she would go away.

Any time Newsweek … now known as Newsweak… give Palin coverage … it only serves to give Palin supporters the idea that she could win regardless of the reality that Palin can’t win.

  23. mel in oregon on July 11, 2011 at 1:42 pm

here’s the idea with sarah palin. she knows she can’t win. she’s an anti-intellectual like gw bush, but she’s very cunning, she is making a ton of money. plus let’s remember, like bush, she cares nothing about anyone except a narrow religious, permanent war seeking, do everything for corporations, & down with government, shrinking it to the point of having nothing left for we the people. in this she is really no different from the rest of the republican wannabees, or hate to hurt feelings here, but also president obama. and yes i know from the english critics, these sentences aren’t grammatically correct. but the content is, that’s what’s important.

Palin looks like on that pic it should be on the cover of The Old Hooker’s Weekly Magazine. No way would it ever make it to Plavboy or Penthouse.

Truth is, her snarkish wit and you betcha idiocy, has damaged the collective view of women in politics. Michele Bachmann is seen by many as a Sarah off-shoot. Every mistake Michele makes is a harkening to Sarah. It is tragic that these two women are always in the spotlight as representatives of their gender in politics. Is it just by chance or does the media/male politicians/American people look for women of this ilk over bright, strong, serious female politicians? I have had many female colleagues in my career and the vast majority make each of these woman look like the worst of their gender. just sayin/wonderin…

You are so right about these two morons being an embarrassment to womanhood. Their presence on the political scene is a mockery of the blood, sweat, and tears so many women have shed in order for us to be respected and taken seriously. However, IMO, it is the Republican Party that seems to want women who they see as ornamental but not too swift in the brains department.
