Eric Cantor Offsets Disaster Relief With a 40% Cut To First Responders
As expected, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is set to demand spending cuts in exchange for disaster relief. The surprise is that he wants to cut the budget for training and equipping first responders by 40%.
Politico reported that Cantor is going to demand more “spending offsets” in exchange for disaster relief,
But a spokesperson for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) signaled late Friday that the GOP is likely to insist on offsets for the $500 million in emergency funds Obama requested for 2011, while dealing with the 2012 funds under a new set of rules agreed to as part of the August debt accord.
“The House has passed $1 billion in disaster relief funds that is fully offset, which we will look to move as quickly as possible,” she said. “There will be no delay in meeting the president’s request and providing people the aid they need.”
Think Progress noted that cuts that Cantor is eyeing come in the form of additional slashes to the Homeland Security budget for training and equipping first responders. Cantor wants an additional 40% cut, on top of the 19% hit that the first responder budget already took this year. Rep. Cantor wants to make sure that in the event of a disaster or terrorist attack America has fewer first responders, and that the remaining first responders do not have the equipment that they need.
The hypocrisy is that Cantor and his fellow Republicans never demanded spending offsets during the Bush administration. In 2004, George W. Bush pushed for a 10% increase in the Homeland Security budget, and as a member of the House majority, Eric Cantor did not oppose the additional funding. In 2003, Cantor supported an additional $78 billion in “emergency” war spending for Iraq and Afghanistan with no spending offsets required.
Eric Cantor never asked for dollar for dollar cuts to pay for the Homeland Security budget and two wars, but yet he is demanding dollar for dollar spending cuts for disaster relief and FEMA. The fact that he is cutting first responders demonstrates that these cuts aren’t about spending.
This isn’t even about small government. In the past many of the slashes to the budget for training first responders were in the form of grants to state and local governments to train first responders. Ideologically, Cantor’s position is that there should be no federal involvement in disaster relief and first responders, but what he looking to slash are programs that benefit state and local preparedness.
Majority Leader Cantor and his office don’t want the American people to know that they are eyeing up gutting the funding for training and equipping first responders. This is why they publicly will only refer to the cuts as spending offsets. They don’t want to tell the American people that spending offsets is really code for slashing the budget for training and equipping first responders.
Republicans talk a good game about protecting the American people, but when it comes to actually following through, the Cantor and the GOP slip back into their de facto motto of Politics First.

When the bill passes, many DINOs will also vote for it. Then DINO Obama will sign it.
Our fraudulent government at work stealing our tax dollars, again. The Republicans and the DINOs within the Democratic Party have merged into the Democratic-Republican Party, Inc., A wholly owned subsidiary of Gilded Fascist Elite, Ltd., a Bilderberg Production.

Back in the day when they were in control, it was unpatriotic not to give Bush every penny he asked for or to ask where it was coming from or going. If the tables were reversed, the airwaves would be full of Republicans accusing Democrats of hating this country and wanting to defund our brave heroes.
But under a Democratic president, they seek to undermine him in hopes of forcing him into appearing as incompetent as Bush re disasters because he has no funds.
Sadly, most Americans will never know what’s behind all of this.

That includes you!
As long as people blame either the Republicans or the Democrats, they too are part of the problem.
Just remember, a vote for the lesser of two evils(DINO vs. Republican) is still a vote for evil. They lie when they tell you there is no other choice. But in reality, a choice between D and R, is a false choice from Hell.

As long as people blame either –” in other words, you want me to pretend that Republicans aren’t at fault for the things they voted for, stand for, and have done. And yet you say others are lying. Stay with me here….

As long as people keep voting for the lesser evils, less evil options will be offered. It’s when greater evil gets voted in because of the apathy of the people who recognize this choice that evil grows.

We know Politics is all about the lesser of two evils. It’s ALWAYS been that way. And yep, there are DINOs … just as there are RINOs … so…and?
Someone still has to be elected.
Third parties CANT win… they only serve to give and take votes to and from the D and R candidate. So, keep pushing for change by all means.. but in the meantime, pick a side and VOTE.

Why shouldn’t we be demanding a 40% cut to Congressional salaries to pay for disaster relief? Unlike certain members of Congress, first responders don’t get to sign pledges and cherry-pick which parts of their job they won’t do.

Jim H. – Great idea to demand Cantor and his ilk cut their own salaries first! We can only wish! Too bad Cantor and his wife are so rich, he could probably afford no Congressional salary – sickening.

I totally agree with you Jim H.! We should all “be demanding 40% cut to Congressional salaries to pay for disaster relief.” With the kind of work schedule instituted by Republicans in the House, I don’t see why Congress people are still receiving full salaries. They spend less time legislating than they do with time off to raise money for their re-election. Lets adopt a bumper stick Slogan: Yes to 40% cuts to congressional salaries; and absolutely NO to cuts for first responders!

I totally agree with you. Those congress people could all do with a 40% salary cut but then we would hear them wailing world wide. It is time to spend needed dollars at home rather than giving billions to other nations. It is better to look after your own first. That will make and encourage a stronger economy with a strong people. We also need to go after big business as well as they tend to out-source many of the jobs or import workers to do jobs that we are capable of doing. They need to pay fair wages so that everyone can get ahead. This is America……… after all is said and done!!!

Here’s something you can cut, Eric Cantor: How about just defunding American foreign aid to Israel? Last year, the US spent a whopping $119 billion to Israel, and has any of that money come back to us? Furthermore, while you’re a millionaire, worth a reputed $6 million, what are you doing accepting ANY MONEY AT ALL for your work in the Senate? You can afford your own healthcare too. So, in addition to adding $119 billion to America’s budget this year, we could just defund the Republican side of the Senate and the Republican side of the House. That would save us a lot of wasted money. I’ve never seen people getting paid six-figure salaries just to say NO in my life.

How would First Responders respond to a fire at the Eric Cantor residence? My initial reaction is that they should let it burn to the ground. My dad, grandfather, brothers, and nephews are all firefighters, and I know in my heart how they’d react. They would all lay their lives on the line to save Cantor’s house. Personally, I’d probably throw another log on the fire and toast marshmallows.

Why is this man in office? Who did he buy off?
He is a slick little weasel – and the FIRST 40% that should be cut is ANY disaster aid to HIS District. They bought and paid for him, let them deal with his idiocy.
It is widely known that a nuclear bomb would need to go off in his district and even then he would be re-elected. Much of his district has been hit by natural disasters recently – cut off his funding! Not one dime! for those in his District. They elected this idiot, let them suffer for it.

Speaking of Texas Rick Perry made HUGE cuts to firefighting budgets while handing out gifts to his political donors. Firefighters are being forced to pay for their own hoses and other equipment to battle the blazes going on in Texas.
I live in Eric Cantor’s district and produced the commercials for the guy who ran against him. We had about $20,000 to spend to air the spots which were praised by Politico, Daily Kos and Atlanta Constitution-Journal. One day Dick Cheney’s wife came to Richmond and raised $350,000 for Cantor…in one day!
He’s got the money on his side and the cultural issues of our more rural, hate Obama at all costs, voters.

Don’t forget that Rick Perry made a WRITTEN proclamation on 4-21-11 calling for Texans to spend 3 days PRAYING for rain. It has been nearly 5 months since that prayerfest, and nary a drop of rain, only devastating wildfires. In the meantime, Perry cut funding for firefighters by 75%, and then has the audacity to complain that FEMA is too slow to provide federal relief to fight the wildfires. Meanwhile, the worst drought in 100 years continues in Texas.
With Cantor’s proposal to slash funding for disaster relief, are we supposed to rely on prayers that we won’t have any more earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes or terrorist attacks? Cuz, ya’ know, that prayer thingy worked so well for Perry…
Also wanted to pass along this perfect ‘GOP slogan for 2012′:
“Republicans 2012: Keeping millions out of work to put one man out of a job”

It doesn’t mean that prayer does not work,it just means that god knows that the true heart of Perry and others like him belong to greed and not God.Just because someone prays does not mean God will answer it.The Republicans are closer to satan than God.But i am not on here to preach,i just want to expose the right wing republicans that falsely themselves Christians. They give real Christians a blackeye.

Sep. 11th, 2011 at 2:32 am
But that would mean punishing innocent people in his district! I say stop paying Republican members of Congress, and their staff, full salaries because they don’t believe in government and want to do absolutely nothing to help people. I don’t understand why my tax dollars are being used to pay people in government who don’t believe the government has a role in helping me during a disaster? Exactly why are these anti-government advocates drawing government salaries, as well as government financed health insurance and government pensions?
Jim H. was absolutely on the mark! Lets demand Congressional salary cuts. While we are it, lets also demand other congressional expense cuts, including cuts in their staff. Personally, I would rather my tax dollars were used to pay police, firemen/women, and teachers, instead of paying for Congressional staff. It’s really telling that advocates of small government never discuss cutting the mushrooming of Congressional staff, or cutting congressional salaries.
