How You Can Help the Families Affected by the Connecticut Shootings
Many of you have asked how you can help the families affected by the devastating events in Newtown/Sandy Hook, Connecticut. The United Way of Western Connecticut, working in partnership with Newton Savings Bank, has created a Sandy Hook School Support fund that will provide support services to the families and community.
They explain, “United Way of Western Connecticut is committed to providing support and resources where and when they become identified and needed. As people from our area and beyond respond to this heartbreaking tragedy, they are turning to United Way looking for ways to help. In response, United Way of Western Connecticut in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank has created the ‘Sandy Hook School Support fund” that will be able to provide support services to the families and community that has been affected.”

Thank you!! It’s good to be able to offer both moral and financial support to families so devastated by the senseless killings of defenseless kids as well as of adults who were entrusted to care for them but also became victims.

This is so tragic and senseless. As a mom and grandmom I wish to send love and prayers to all the victims and their families, as well as all of the responders. I was thinking that when my kids were that age (my grandkids are that age)we didn’t have 2 extra dimes to rub together, let alone pay for a proper funeral, for a child no less. United Way: Thank you for providing an opportunity to help in some way.
To the town of Newton: Every parent and grandparent all over the USA and the world is saying a prayer for you and your loved ones.

THIS is where the focus needs to be.
I’m glad that United Way is on the ball with this.
Here is a thought for everyone. I don’t know how many of us are not able to help (finances, etc.) and can only do things like “sending positive energy” or praying or whatever.
A very real thing you can do is make an effort to respond to others around you with kindness and gentleness (and even a smile).
You never know that you might turn someone from a path like this, or prevent a suicide.
Sometimes the deepest gloom can be lifted by a smile. Sometimes it’s the little things that save lives/souls… a purr from a kitty or wagging tail from a dog, a ray of light striking flowers, a bird’s song. We can make a huge difference in the lives of others, and sometimes it takes very little to make that difference a positive one.
We’re all human beings and deserve it.

My sincere condolences go out to all the victims families during this difficult time. I think the poster above is right in saying a way to help for people who are far away or are financially unable is to pay good deeds forward. Listen actively to those around you, don’t be afraid to talk about mental illness, suicide or report signs of possible violent behavior. As a social service worker the most rewarding part of my job is helping people get through these tragedies, and also helping troubled people recover from their illness.
My wish for Christmas will be to help the families get through the emotional turmoil of this tragedy.
