Trump’s entire adult life has been built on self-delusion, but what made Trump successful in American politics was his ability to gaslight America into believing that his delusions are fact.

The president has never had an approval rating over 50% with a non-partisan pollster, so it isn’t as if his gaslighting has worked on everyone, but it worked on enough people in a deeply divided country to get him into the White House twice.

One of the main reasons why Trump won in 2024 was that he was able to, through relentless repetition, convince people that he was a good steward of the US economy. The truth always has been that Trump was riding on the fumes of the Obama economy, and he had already steered the country into recession before COVID arrived.

Trump and his reputation for economic competency were bailed out by COVID. Without the pandemic, America would have deepened into recession. Trump wouldn’t have had an excuse, and his career may have ended in 2020.

When Trump returned to office, he faced an angry American public that was upset over costs and inflation. Each of Trump’s moves has made the crisis worse, so the president has continued to try to gaslight America, but it hasn’t worked this time.

RFK Jr. testified before the House today in his capacity as HHS Secretary, and the results varied from troubling to deeply disturbing.

For instance, the HHS Secretary claimed that Joe Biden created the chronic disease epidemic.

Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) said, “The things he’s inherited? He’s increased the deficit by more than any administration in the history of America as part of the big, beautiful bill that’s not something he inherited.”

Sec. Kennedy answered, “This president has done more to protect public health than any president in history. He is the first one. You guys are the ones that gave us the chronic disease epidemic. We’re the unhealthiest population on the face of the earth.”

Suozzi asked, “Did that all happen in the past four years of the Biden administration?”

Kennedy said, “You guys, it happened. It happened all. It was the Clinton administration. You’ve been a politician your entire life.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) recently let it be known that his caucus was about to take steps to force out Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Jeffries said, “We’ve successfully run out of town some of his Cabinet secretaries. I believe Pete Hegseth is next, and we’re going to keep our foot on the gas pedal to push this guy out.”

House Democrats put their foot on the gas by filing articles of impeachment against Hegseth.

House Democrats filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth for high crimes and misdemeanors that include:

• Unauthorized war against Iran and reckless endangerment of United States servicemembers, in direct contravention of Article I of the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Resolution;

• Violations of the law of armed conflict and targeting of civilians, including an illegal strike to kill survivors of an initial attack on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea and operations resulting in large civilian casualties in Iran that run afoul of the Geneva Conventions;

• Negligence and reckless handling of sensitive military information, including the unlawful sharing of classified information over unsecured communication systems like Signal;

• Obstruction of Congressional oversight, including ongoing efforts to withhold material facts relating to civilian casualties and operational conduct in Iran and Venezuela;

• Abuse of power and politicization of the Armed Forces, including the authorization of targeted investigations against elected officials like Captain Mark Kelly for exercising their First Amendment rights;

• Conduct bringing disrepute upon the United States and its Armed Forces, including the forcible separation of transgender servicemembers from the military.

Any single item on the list would be enough for impeachment, but the whole list looks like high crimes crime wave.

While speaking at the New York Economic Club during the 2024 election campaign, Trump said, “We’re going down and getting gasoline below $2 a gallon.” He also said that he would “bring down the price of everything from electricity rates to groceries, airfares, and housing costs.”

Along with groceries, gas prices are a direct pain point for American consumers, so when Trump launched a war of choice that increased gas prices by 40%, the people responded with rage.

Scott Bessent is Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary. Scott Bessent is also worth $600 million. Bessent, like the president and the rest of his cabinet, is completely out of touch with the lives and struggles of regular people.

During Trump’s first term, he launched a trade war with China that caused a crisis in the farming community. However, farmers didn’t learn their lesson. By the time the 2024 election rolled around, farmers had some sort of collective amnesia because they did it all to themselves again. Only this time, it is even worse.

A new survey of farmers for the American Farm Bureau Federation shows that things are about to get much worse for the nation’s farmers:

Conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation April 3-11, the survey shows 70% of respondents say fertilizer is so expensive that they will not be able to buy all the fertilizer they need.

More than 5,700 farmers, both Farm Bureau members and non-members, from every state and Puerto Rico took the survey. Farm Bureau economists analyzed the results in the latest Market Intel.

The analysis reveals that almost 8 in 10 farmers in the southern U.S. say they can’t afford all needed supplies this year, followed by the Northeast and West at 69% and 66%, respectively, compared to 48% of the farmers in the Midwest.

Just 19% of farmers in the South prebooked fertilizer purchases in advance of planting season. In the Northeast, only 30% of farmers prebooked, followed by 31% in the West, and 67% in the Midwest. Even with higher pre-booking rates, almost one in three Midwestern farmers still report entering the season without securing all of their fertilizer needs.

Trump’s war of choice did this to his own supporters, and it could be more devastating for them than it was in his first administration.

According to a statement from the House Judiciary Committee Democrats:

Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced legislation establishing a Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office, the body and process called for in Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to enable Congress to ensure effective and uninterrupted leadership in the presidency. This body is the legislative counterpart to the Cabinet and would have the power to work with the Vice President. Essentially, the 25th Amendment gives us a constitutional answer to any medical crisis that might occur.

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment empowers Congress to establish a permanent “body” that, with the concurrence of the Vice President, can declare that the President is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” Although the 25th Amendment was adopted more than 50 years ago, Congress never set up this body called for in Section 4. Ranking Member Raskin’s bill establishes this independent nonpartisan body: The Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office. This means the Vice President could act either with a majority of the Cabinet or a majority of this body in the event of a 25th Amendment crisis.

In emergency situations, Congress could pass a concurrent resolution requiring the Commission to examine the President, determine his/her ability to execute the powers and duties of the office, and report its findings to Congress. If presidential incapacity exists according to the Vice President and a majority of the Commission, the Vice President would immediately assume the role of Acting President.

The legislation is massively important.

Eric Swalwell is 45 years old, and at some point in the near future, the odds are that he will try to stage a political comeback. That is the only explanation I can think of for Swalwell's resignation statement, which contained enough ambiguity and blame of others to suggest that he is going to try to reemerge after he thinks the scandal has blown over.

Swalwell talks about taking responsibility, but he doesn’t give any indication that he thinks he did anything wrong. Sexual misconduct and sexual assault are not mistakes. Those are choices that hurt and harm women. A mistake is something that wasn’t intended to happen. What Swalwell did was make a choice.

Swalwell maintains that he didn’t commit rape or criminal sexual assault. Those are acts that he is alleged to have committed. The criminal investigation will hopefully be able to reveal the facts.

Former Rep. Swalwell’s complaints about the expulsion vote reveal that the threat of expelling him from Congress is why he is resigning. Swalwell didn’t have a realization or moral awakening. He knew that enough Democrats would vote to expel him, so resignation was his only option.

House Democratic leadership was not defending him, and immediately released a statement after the allegations surfaced, calling on him to end his campaign for governor of California.

Even Swalwell’s friends called for his expulsion.

I believe that a person who has changed or rehabilitated deserves a second chance, but Swalwell is showing that it would have been a mistake for House Democrats to fend off the expulsion vote. Swalwell hasn’t taken full responsibility and spent a statement that should be about apologizing to the people he hurt, including the alleged victims, who are never mentioned, raising a complaint about due process.

Eric Swalwell is an attorney. He knows that there is no right to due process in Congress. The fact that Swalwell brought up due process suggests that he is going to go the Donald Trump route and claim that he was politically targeted and denied his rights.

Women are the majority of the Democratic Party and the backbone of the party.

Eric Swalwell showed that he is still only thinking about himself as he resigns from Congress, which is why there should be no place for Swalwell in the Democratic Party now or in the future.

As more women come forward alleging a wide scope of sexual misconduct was committed by Rep. Eric Swalwell, the congressman’s gubernatorial campaign in California collapsed, and he will face an expulsion vote this week in the House.

Sen. Reuben Gallego (D-AZ) was a Swalwell supporter and a friend, but he immediately pulled his endorsement once the allegations became public.

Gallego’s name has been floated as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, so he is probably thinking about his own political future to some degree, but it is also clear that many Democrats were not aware of the allegations against Swalwell.

He has continued to try to discredit stories that are bad for him while making money with defamation lawsuits.

Trump was livid over The Wall Street Journal’s story about Trump’s birthday card to Epstein, so he sued for defamation.

Judge Darrin Gayles wrote in his ruling:

The Complaint also alleges that President Trump told Defendants that the Letter was a fake before they ran the Article. President Trump argues that this allegation shows that Defendants acted with serious doubts about the truth of their reporting and, therefore, with actual malice. The Court disagrees. To establish actual malice, “a plaintiff must show the defendant deliberately avoided investigating the veracity of the statement in order to evade learning the truth.” Reed, 2025 WL 1874638, at *3. The Complaint comes nowhere close to this standard. Quite the opposite.

The Article explains that, before running the story, Defendants contacted President Trump, Justice Department officials, and the FBI for comment. President Trump responded with his denial, the Justice Department did not respond at all, and the FBI declined to comment. In short, the Complaint and Article confirm that Defendants attempted to investigate. The Article also states that the WSJ reviewed the Letter. [ECF No. 35-2].

Republicans have been taking basic how-to autocratization classes from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Hungary evinces the soft fascism that is the end goal of all Republican actions. Globally, conservatives’ goal is to defeat international liberalism, which results in the tightening pressure we see against western democracy.

One of the Orbán-style attacks on democracy is to use the law to grab power. If what they want is illegal, change the law to make it legal. They are to make changes to the law to enable them to invoke their goal, and then to argue first principles in defense, which is particularly and specifically ironic given that they are actually taking power away from the people while citing popular sovereignty as justification — the idea that the government’s power comes from the people being governed. When called out for abuse of power, they claim “this is my democratic mandate.”

Orbán eroded democracy in Hungary and concentrated power, all the while being one of Putin’s closest allies, and a constant problem for the EU.

Donald Trump hasn’t done interviews with neutral journalists who could challenge him in years. Trump’s venues of choice are either cell phone interviews that last a minute or two or conservative media like Fox News and Newsmax.

The Fox News interviews are heavily manufactured, usually pretaped, and edited before they air.

It takes a special level of incompetence to go on a network that is propagandistic and supportive and botch a softball question in such a friendly and managed environment.

The issue that is driving the special election results that Democrats have been dominating, and the Democratic Party’s midterm generic ballot lead that has been growing, is the economy. Inflation and rising prices are driving voter outrage directed at this president and his administration.

The White House and his party wanted Trump to be discussing affordability. Instead, the president got talked into a war against Iran in the Middle East, and has abandoned any messages on affordability to the American people.

Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures aired an interview with Trump where he was tossed a giant, juicy softball by loyal supporter Maria Bartiromo.

Bartiromo asked Trump, “ So do you believe the price of oil and gas will be lower before the midterm elections?”

This should have been an easy question, but somehow Trump turned it into a gift to Democrats.

There are two points about the allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell. The allegations are vast. They span multiple women over several years. Not all allegations are anonymous and have been verified by media reports.

CNN reported:

A former staffer of Rep. Eric Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for California governor, says that the congressman raped her when she was heavily intoxicated and left her bruised and bleeding, an allegation Swalwell strongly denies.

She said it was the second time Swalwell had nonconsensual sexual contact with her while she was drunk. In 2019, when she was still working for him, she said she woke up naked with him in a hotel room after a night of heavy drinking. She said she had no memory of what happened but could feel physically that they’d had sexual contact.

Three other women who spoke with CNN also alleged various kinds of sexual misconduct by the Democratic congressman – including Swalwell sending them unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos.

Rep. Swalwell released a video late Friday night denying all of the allegations, but he did make general references to not being perfect and making mistakes.

There is also the practical reason that Donald Trump is busy setting himself and his party on fire every single day right now. A doomed-to-fail impeachment push would give Trump the distraction that he wants and unify his party before the midterm election.

Chasing impeachment right now would also tick off voters who have solidly shown in dozens of special elections that they are ready to vote for Democrats based on the economy, affordability, and the fact that Trump and his party have made everything that they have touched worse since being returned to power.

Impeaching Trump will do nothing, even if Democrats had the votes, but there is one strategy that has proven highly successful for the House minority.

Democrats have been able to use the threat of investigation and impeachment to force members ot Trump’s cabinet out. It worked to get rid of Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi, and now Democrats are going to turn their attention to Pete Hegseth.

The first call for Hegseth to be impeached for war crimes came in December 2025. The war in Iran has heightened the urgency to get Hegseth out of the Pentagon. Articles of impeachment will be filed next week.

The possibility of being Cheneyed is why House Republicans almost universally toe the line when it comes to Trump, which is what makes what is happening in Kentucky with Rep. Thomas Massie such an important turning point.

House Democrats can’t invoke the 25th Amendment on their own, but they are exploring their options.

Axios reported:

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries gave ground today to his backbenchers, announcing a 25th Amendment briefing to be led by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Friday. … The time it takes for Democratic leadership to yield to riled-up rank-and-file lawmaker demands is getting shorter and shorter.

….

A year ago, Dems fumed at Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) for introducing articles of impeachment.

But the taboo around impeaching Trump has been tossed out the window, and rank-and-file calls for the 25th Amendment have returned.

More than 85 Democrats had called for Trump’s removal by last night.

There is tremendous angst in the country about Trump’s deranged threats to commit war crimes,” Raskin, who has publicly called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked, told us.

“The Constitution is not perfectly designed for an emergency like this, but the 25th Amendment is definitely the closest avenue we have for a federal response,” Raskin said.

Israel is bombing Lebanon, which was included in the ceasefire. The Trump administration is claiming that Lebanon was not included in the ceasefire in spite of written evidence showing that Lebanon is supposed to be included under the ceasefire.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on X:

The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments — a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again.

….

In such situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations is unreasonable.

Iran says Israel’s attacks on Lebanon are a violation of the agreement. A drone was sent into Iranian airspace, and Iran says the Uranium is not covered under the agreement.

The agreement is teetering on the brink of collapse, and negotiations may need to be held just to save the ceasefire before other negotiations can take place.

The whole situation is turning into a joke.

Trump is trying to flee a war that he started, but it appears Israel is trying to keep him in the war by violating the ceasefire agreement.

The Trump administration has been frantically trying to sell their cave on the war as a win, but the administration is trying to change the terms over control of the Strait of Hormuz, and who will collect the toll on ships passing through.

Ceasefires are always tricky, but there is a strong case to be made that there is no ceasefire in Iran, because the agreement started to fall apart shortly after it was announced.

Trump’s Iran ceasefire may go down in history as the ceasefire that never was.

The most serious question involves the mental state of Donald Trump, because what the Iran war revealed is that the chaos and havoc that Trump has been domestically inflicting through the use of ICE and border patrol has now gone global, with immigration agents being replaced by the US military.

The thinking behind Trump’s war in Iran was not much different from his deployment of armed and masked immigration agents to American cities. The Iran war was larger, more deadly and had global consequences.

Trump’s behavior is escalating and becoming more dangerous to people both at home and abroad.

The worst outcome from this ceasefire would be that it is treated like business as usual, and everyone moves on.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is warning that Trump must be removed from office.

The President has threatened a genocide against the Iranian people, and is continuing to leverage that threat. He has launched a massive war of enormous risk and of catastrophic consequence without reason, rationale, nor Congressional authorization - which is as clear a violation of the Constitution as any.

Each day this goes on, the risk and criminality of these actions escalate for our nation and the world.

AOC goes on to argue that Trump has passed the threshold for impeachment and the 25th Amendment.

Iran confirms that it has agreed to the ceasefire agreement-Fars Iran adds that the US accepted its 10-point proposal as the basis for negotiations, including Iranian control of Hormuz, full compensation for war damages, and the withdrawal of American forces from the region.

Iran’s Foreign Minister announced that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen for two weeks during the ceasefire, but the Strait will remain under Iranian control.

There is no mention in the agreement of Iran’s nuclear program, which means that Trump’s pretense for starting this war of choice has been taken off the table.

None of this has stopped Trump from celebrating his surrender on Truth Social:

Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!
