While Firefighters Battle Sandy, Romney Eyes Cuts to Firefighter Funding
In Manhattan and everywhere Sandy is wreaking havoc, firefighters are serving their fellow citizens at a time of need. They were there when the crane fell in NYC, when a facade fell, in Atlantic City and more.
Firefighters matter in an emergency. Remember when Governor Romney mocked President Obama for saying we needed more firefighters? That wasn’t just political posturing. Mitt Romney has a long, sordid history of fighting firefighters, dating back to his term as Governor of Massachusetts when he “used a line-item veto to cut ‘millions of dollars for firefighting equipment,’ including firefighters’ ‘coats, pants, helmets and boots.’”
Romney also made cuts to firefighters, police and teachers that “led to the laying off of about 14,500 workers in total over the course of Romney’s term.” Furthermore, Paul Ryan’s budget would cut firefighting support by 19 percent.
In Iowa on June 8th of this year, Mitt Romney was mocking President Obama for saying we needed more firefighters, police and teachers. Romney said, “He wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”
Watch here:
Romney was reacting to Obama saying we needed more jobs in state and local government because May, 13,000 government jobs had been eliminated in May (these jobs were cut by Republican governors around the country, leading to a job loss in the public sector — in fact the last three years have been the worst on record for the public sector) while 82,000 jobs were added in the private sector.
Romney said Obama’s comments about firefighters and teachers would “go down in history as an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a president who’s out of touch.”
Asked to respond to Romney’s May comments about not needing more firefighters, the president of the International Association of Firefighters told Salon, “It doesn’t surprise us at all. It’s very consistent with our experience with him and his view about our responsibility to keep our communities safe. His actions as governor, as candidate for president, have made it clear that he’s willing to jeopardize the safety of our communities.”
Salon reported on Romney’s epic battles with firefighters as Governor:
As governor of Massachusetts, Romney often ended up sparring with firefighters and their unions. He proposed stripping collective bargaining rights for firefighters and police officers in a city that needed a state bailout, and cut funding to a fire station to be built on the site where six firemen died. He also proposed tripling the state police budget to deal with homeland security concerns in the years after 9/11, but didn’t offer a dime for firefighters, angering many at the time.
In July, while fighting the Colorado fires, Aurora firefighter Steve Clapham responded to Romney’s comments about cutting federal funding to firefighters by telling Huffington Post, “Given the severe fire danger right now is there anyone who really believes we need less firefighters? The American people need leaders who will invest in firefighters and in public safety. We need the support of politicians who understand the importance of the job that we do.”
It’s most telling that Romney wouldn’t walk back his June comments about cutting back on firefighters after he made them. The media was expecting him to explain that he had gaffed, but his campaign refused to respond directly to requests for clarification, while his surrogate Sununu referred to the “wisdom” of Romney’s comments. By now, when Romney won’t get specific, we get worried because it can only mean one thing: We won’t like the answer so he’d rather avoid telling us the truth.
The crisis of Sandy offers us yet another opportunity to understand the importance of our first responders and what the function of government is.

Who will Romney call when his mansion in CA catches fire? I would hope he has his own private service since those brave folks will be fighting fires elswhere.

Let’s see what happens to him when his pants catch on fire and there’s no one to put them out.

Your comment brought to mind a great idea. Sell tickets to be the one to set them off! Funds raised directed to disaster relief. I’d have no problem with that as it would be done in an area he cut back on firefighters and oops!! no equipment available to help as they’re on other calls of more importance!! Helping those in the 47% which includes the firefighters, police, teachers……
Reynardine — you brought a smile to my face this morning just thinking about it. Thanks — I needed that after watching all the destruction from Sandy.

Oh Sarah…there you go again making the case against privatizing first responders ;)…
I bet if all the first responders, police and fire department, the EMT’s, “911″ operations were privatized as Mr Mittens and his cohorts are eager to do, we’d all sleep more soundly, and, with absolute certainty knowing that our lives will be saved by one of the employees of Mr Mittens’ private responder operation…that’ is, if our credit card is pre-approved…or we blow on Tinkerbell a little harder…opps, I meant, pray real hard for the sky-god’s save us.

My sister is a teacher and I have a friend who is a fire fighter. Both work damn hard and do not deserve to be demonized as somehow being responsible for all the ills plaguing our government. This notion that our problems can be solved by firing teachers and fire fighters is just asinine. We need to be ensuring they have what they need to do their very important and vital jobs, and we need to pay them what they are worth. It is that simple. They did not cause our problems and they should not be “punished” for it.

ROMNEY FEMA
Three times, Mitt and Ryan publicly demanded that the federal government only disburse disaster relief funding if Congress agreed to off setting budgets cuts elsewhere. This would hold desperately needed disaster relief funding hostage unless Congress agreed to cuts elsewhere in the budget, an extraordinarily difficult prospect even in normal times..These same so called sane men want to defund Planned Parenthood which prevents more abortions than any unit in America. It provides preventative health care for millions of the poorest of the poor women. A Christian nation???? What would Christ say??

let’s not forget that during the debates Romney walked back all of his rhetoric about teachers. He now loves teachers and I would assume that goes along with firefighters and police. However that was a few weeks ago
Romney thinks the conservatives want to hear that we must cut government. And that is what they want to hear. Right up until it affects them.

It’s like the Romney wife yelling out ‘I/We love women’ at the RNC convention.
No I will not say her name as she’s not worthy of ‘crapper body waste’. That’s the extent of my being nice to her — I didn’t say ‘sh*t’!!!

There is a state-wide ballot proposal here in Michigan targeting collective bargaining for public employees (teachers, police, firefighters, etc.). In our small city the mayor wants to merge the city fire department with the county all volunteer, non-unionized, fire departments. Many of the houses are older wood structures and built close together. His idea is not a good one and is really aimed at “busting” the union. We support the firefighters and their union. Those who risk their lives for us deserve our support, all of the time.

The GOP is notorious for attempts, successful or otherwise, at union-busting. Just like they do with war veterans, they praise the work that firefighters and police officers do, yet they’re more than willing to reward the dangerous, life-threatening tasks these people perform with cutting salaries, benefits, etc. The mystery is why people in these groups would vote for Republicans.

Romney has stated publicly that he wants every State to be a right to work State. These nitwits who plan on voting for him had better be careful what they wish for. If he should ever win in November 6th by stealing, America will be done for. It ‘ll take decades to correct the damage these R’thugs will inflict on the country.

Mitt Romney’s fire response plan is “not my house, so I don’t care.” TAKE AMERICA BACK VOTE DEMOCRAT! Republican austerity measures DO NOT WORK. Republican austerity measures do nothing except take more money out of local economies thus leading to MORE unemployment, MORE suffering, MORE death. Unemployment will do nothing but increase wherever Republicans have power. I made a video about unemployment, and how we can fix it. It’s at my YouTube channel Zarrakan, and here’s the name:

Watch it, share it, and join the fight against those who want to kill all of us with destructive social policies.

Well Mr Romney or is it Rummmy? I invite you to spend a night in the poverty section of any major city at night with out your body guards and see what goes on. Oh and by the way it is not only at night but during the day that there are are ride-bys and children dieing from gun shots. Little old ladies being raped and murdered by crack addicts. Store and banks being robber for drug money. Mitt it is time to get you head out of your ass and smell the coffee. You can not cut back on our public servants.
Our education system is screwed up and behind other nations because we do not have the money to hire the best of the best to teach our children. There are no private schools for the 49%.
Take our money, your homes and your cars and take a flying leap.
