Tansy is the herb that they used to use to force abortion. Usually made into a “tea”. I did a lot of research into this when I was a midwife as I was intrigued with what women used to do way back when. I stumbled upon a very old book written by a minister, of all people, back in the 1700′s at a flea market. (I wish I had more info on that book, I lost it in a hurricane) He quoted the same, and what was the most troubling is that he also made mention that the tansy tea would not affect the baby IF the woman had been “pure” to her husband. She would only miscarry is she went against the “word of the Lord”. WTH??? Tansy WILL induce abortion in 99% of women who take this. It’s quite toxic.

there are many ways of inducing abortions with herbs, they are dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing with them. Do research and then do more, only take these herbs if you have a certified master herbalist and your doctors approval. Yeah they can cause you to have an abortion, but you could bleed out as well (and may result in death of you as well). I am an herbalist, I know this for a fact. Herbs are medicine.

In Japan the geishas of the past were given a proper amount of herbs not to become pregnant or to miscarry. When those herbs failed, doctors performed abortions. Before abortions became legal here, one of my friends flew to Japan to have a legal save abortion in a hospital.

Exodus 21:22
King James Version (KJV)
22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
It would seem that causing a woman to miscarry her fetus ( at whatever term) should result, at most, in a fine as long as thewoman came to no harm .. ..

Exodus 21:22 is more to the point. The fetus was considered, according to the Talmud, to be as “the thigh of the mother”. Thus, a fine was the only punishment in the case of a miscarry (also called a “spontaneous abortion”). The death penalty was only called for in the case of the death of the mother.
The so-called “pro-life” movement perpetrated upon Christians who don’t know their Bible. Note that is it these same so-called pro-life Republicans who are just itching to go to war with Iran…to perform massive post-natal abortions.

I find this hilarious, and agree that the fundies are doing the same as the fundie Islamists. Twisting a religion to their own needs and devices.
Why was there religious abortions in the bible? I think you have hit on the crux of the situation. The priests, the ministers and other religious leaders are upset because they are not performing the abortion. All we need to do is handed over to them and they can pass out a little bitter water, then go home and feel good about themselves

Where’s ConservativeHeart on this one??
Of course, born-again-pro-life-evangelical-christians don’t, know, read, or understanding much of anything in life let alone the bible! These are people looking for spoon-fed certainty presented by anyone who has lots of expensive trash and trinkets to flash around on Sunday morning; they are the “Pick’n'Chosen Ones” that the bible prophesies about, right?
Pickin’n'choosin’IS their god-given right under the first and second amendment can I get’a amen?

A couple of years ago, I ran into a scripture in the middle of the OT that said that the Bible shouldn’t be taken as absolute truth. I wish I could find that one again. There is so much that can be gleaned from the Bible, especially if you look at it as a scholar (or tending towards scholarship).
A couple of the theologians I’ve talked with in the past have said yes, the “bitter water” caused abortions. (Needless to say, they weren’t fundamentalist/dominionist ersatz “theologians”!)
What struck me about this was (1) the woman had no such recourse if her husband had been sleeping around, (2) she was the one that was punished if the man felt jealous, and (3) that sort of thinking is part of why we fight such strong misogynist thinking today.

I suspect that Dominionists, etc. will respond that this is all Old Testament and that Christ declared, according to the Pope, that life now begins at conception. No matter that Christ would want them to forgive women who get abortions, as well as the doctors who perform them.

And think about this. IF and I am saying IF, because I do believe that the vast majority of American people are too smart to have this propoganda play a part in the election of an extremist Republican Tea Party Taliban Terrorist Party Member. But IF the dominionist crazy people get control, then abortions performed due to the mother or the father not being “Their Kind of Christian” would be just fine with them. Because people like Bachmann (sp) had mentors that believe we should go back to the Old Testament to draft our laws, government, etc. What I don’t get is that the Bible is so clear that when Christ comes back it will be to SET UP HIS Government and to reign. Nothing I have found causes me to believe that the government has to be set up already with ‘man’ in charge.
I hope that the American people start paying attention to what is happening and not have the attitude that was prevalent throughout World War II. Just because it seems so improbable that anyone who believes this garbage could really be elected (you know, surely my neighbor will go vote against this because I’m just to busy too) or that this is just too ‘far out there’ to possibly be true (why no one in the 21st century believes this stuff-no one) may wake up in the not so distant future wondering how did we let this happen to America. God help us all.

Thank you Ray Medeiros! There is no mention in the Bible that condemns abortion. In fact, Gawd himself seems to actually approve of inducing a miscarriage/abortion.
Numbers 5:11-31, English Standard Version
www.biblegateway.com/pass...
27 And when he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has broken faith with her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people.
I found this interesting article:
History of Contraception (May 2009)
tinyurl.com/76nlej8
Could “Silphion” be the “bitter waters” mentioned in Numbers 5:11-31?
“Herbal remedies for bringing on delayed menstruation abound in history and in contemporary folk culture. One ancient method of unusual interest was the use of an herb called silphion exported from the ancient Greek city of Cyrene in North Africa. The plant was said to be worth its weight in silver. It is not clear whether it was an oral contraceptive or oral abortifacient, although extracts of related living species prevent implantation in mice. Efforts were made to grow the plant in other parts of the Mediterranean, but they failed, and the herb was harvested to extinction in classical times. Silphion was portrayed on the Cyrene coins.16″
From the same article, would this be the reference to “her thigh shall fall away” mentioned in Numbers 5:27?
Embryotomy to save the mother’s life during labor is mentioned in ancient Jewish writings. Rhazes describes such a method:
If … the semen has become lodged, there is no help for it but that she insert into her womb a probe or stick cut into the shape of a probe, especially good being the root of the mallow. One end of the probe should be made fast to the thigh with a thread that it may go no further. Leave it there all night, often all day as well…. Some people screw paper up tight into the shape of a probe and after binding it securely with silk smear over it ginger dissolved in water.12
The GOP/TeaParty’s most useful rabble-rousing tool is anti-choice rhetoric to win the votes of those folks who blindly parrot theocratic flat-earth babble verses. Many say they feel comfort in reading the “Good Book” even though it contains extreme violence and unthinkable atrocities. We live in the 21st century and our government representatives need to use real life reason to solve our real life problems, not theocratic hyperbole.
