How God Got Back Into the Democratic Platform
By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonSep. 6th, 2012more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson

For anyone tuning into MSNBC last night it was a bit confusing, this sudden talk about God and the platform and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Maddow and her team tried to sort through the facts quickly but there wasn’t a lot of time to talk about it with the time available.
You see, God wasn’t in the Democratic Platform this year. And the Republicans noticed. After all, they have God in their platform twelve times, which is probably nowhere near enough, when you stop to think about it (by way of contrast, the U.S. Constitution managed to mention God 0 times).
You can imagine how well God’s absence went over. As noted on the faith blog at the Washington Post, it was “an omission Republicans have seized upon as a failure of their opponents to appreciate the divine’s place in American history.”
Giving the Republican complaints a sense of weight was the fact that God had indeed appeared in the 2004 and 2008 Democratic platforms.
Of course, this “divine grace” nonsense is Bartonism talking; it is mythology, not history. Republicans have a well known aversion to actual history and for obvious reasons embrace the made-up stuff instead.
Paul Ryan the liar whined to Fox & Friends, “I guess I would just put the onus and the burden on them to explain why they did all this, these purges of God.”
It’s not like Ryan has to explain his endless lies. So he ignored all those and complained to Fox News instead that “(I)t undermines our nation’s support for our ally, Israel.”
Mitt Romney made the Democrats out to be extremists as a result of the God-absence, telling Fox News: “(That) this party purposely removed God from their platform suggests a party that is increasingly out of touch with the mainstream of the American people,” Romney said. “I see it as being as out of touch and detached.”
Glenn Beck’s The Blaze ramped up the drama by calling it a “shocking revelation” that God had been stripped from the platform. You can’t throw the big sky god under the bus! You can put words in his mouth but you can’t take him out altogether!
You’d think the U.S. Constitution would be precedent enough for secular politics.
Of course, it wasn’t like religion was absent from the Democratic platform in the form of ‘faith’ (mentioned 11 times), ‘religion’ (mentioned nine times), ‘church’ (mentioned twice), and clergy (mentioned once). The platform said that,
“Faith has always been a central part of the American story, and it has been a driving force of progress and justice throughout history, we know that our nation, our communities, and our lives are made vastly strongly and richer by faith and the countless acts of justice and mercy it inspires”
National press secretary for the Democratic National Committee Melanie N. Rousell said that the issue was a “faux contrversy” which sort of goes right along with the faux facts from Fox News.
The secularists among us can argue that the paragraph above is largely inaccurate in its portrayal of faith as a force for progress but the point is that the Republican attacks were baseless.
Robert Gibbs was put on the spot by CNN last night, and Gibbs like Rousell pointed out the presence of ‘faith’ and ‘religion’. He also, unfortunately, referred to ‘God-fearing Democrats’ when most of us would say fear of God is one of religion’s biggest drawbacks. Look where fear of God has brought the Republican platform. We could do without fear of the divine.
The upshot of all this was that Wednesday night, at the 11th hour, the Democrats put God back into their platform, along with affirmation that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. Besides losing Christian voters, the DNC was worried about driving Jews (a pro-Obama demographic in 2008) into Romney’s hands.
It was former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, chair of the platform committee who proposed the change, which required a two-thirds voice vote by the delegates:
“I am here to attest and affirm that our faith and belief in God is central to the American story and informs the values we’ve expressed in our party’s platform. In addition, President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and our party’s platform should as well.”
This is in line with the 2008 platform with regards to the status of Jerusalem.
The word chaos has been used to describe what ensued following Strickland’s proposal. And yes, it was embarrassing to Democrats, who the day before had presented a united front. To make matters worse, it was apparently President Obama who was the driving force behind the changes and the changes met with loud opposition from Democrats, as the convention chairman, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, found out when he went to the podium.
HuffPo describes what happened next:
Villaraigosa, in what quickly became an awkward moment, asked for the voice vote three times in all. After the second time, he paused for several seconds and looked behind him for guidance from a convention staffer — possibly a parliamentarian — before turning back and asking for a third vote.
Even though the no’s were again as loud if not louder than the aye’s on the third vote, Villaraigosa said he had determined that two thirds of those present had voted in favor. Boos filled the arena in response.
Within minutes, Republican National Committee staffers had uploaded the video to YouTube and were circulating it on Twitter.
And the Right Wing pundisphere went wild. World Net Daily predictably charged that Democrats Boo Idea of Mentioning God. Hate jock Michael Savage said, “This is a big moment. America is disgusted with this party of atheists and America haters.”
Fox News went with the headline, Convention floor erupts as Dems restore references to God, Jerusalem in platform. Breitbart went with a melodramatic Resurrection: DNC Overules Delegates, Rams God and Jerusalem Back Into Platform.
Breitbart, in keeping with its pseudo-journalistic approach to events went straight Republican talking points in is analysis of the changes:
Sources also report that the language was changed “to reflect the president’s personal view.” This is bull. President Obama has never recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and neither has his spokesperson or State Department. He has never taken a public position against the so-called “right of return,” which would destroy Israel as a Jewish state. And he has publicly stated that Israel should use the 1949 armistice lines as the baseline of any future negotiations. This was obviously a political move designed to prevent disillusioned Jewish voters from leaving the Democratic voters in droves. If Jews are smart — and if they watch this tape — they’ll realize that the base of the Democratic Party simply does not support Israel, even if the DNC quashes their votes.
This is a Republican meme, that Obama is hostile to Israel, when in fact Obama has been a very good friend to Israel. It is unfortunate that the Democratic organizers allowed this unscripted moment to occur at all; it is even worse that when it did come up they so handily bungled it. They couldn’t have handled it worse if they were secret Republicans. It was a shambles and a stumble that redquired a re-gatheriung of momentum. Fortunately for Democrats, we had the right guy in the wings: Bill Clinton, to put things to right. And he did just that, in spades.
But the larger question cannot be brushed under the table: does God belong in a party platform? Religion and politics are not identical. One is very private (as Jesus himself insisted) and the other is necessarily very public. One is of necessity something that must be discussed in a public venue so that we can collectively decide on our future course. The other is something that according to the Constitution, should not inform our laws.
Many will say that the Democrats have once more caved into the Religious Right, and there is some justification to those complaints. Democrats have a long history of catering to the Evangelical vote, of stressing their own religiosity. Those of us who are Democrats but are not Christians are left in the lurch, feeling as though the rug has been yanked out from under us. The Democrats tossed away a perfect opportunity to push for secular government. It is focusing on symptoms of theocracy, such as the attack on women’s reproductive rights, without attacking the disease itself.
God belongs in the Bible. he belongs in churches and in the homes of believers. He does not belong in the U.S. Constitution (and our Founding Fathers, at least, if not our current crop of leaders, had the sense to leave him out), and he does not belong in a major party platform. There is no denying that many of us would have said that this year’s platform reflected progress. Instead, caving to pressure, Democrats have taken a big step backward.

Well, the choice was either restore the previous language, or listen to the Right get hysterical about the ‘proof’ that Obama is not Christian and hates Israel. When did the GOP get so cozy with Netanyahu anyway? And why? I know why Israel wants Mitt-he will bomb Iran for them. But President Obama has not cut the massive aid they receive, even though he should be giving to the starving Palestinians instead. Frankly, this is one of those ‘platforms’ that is there for lip service. People who still think America is some model ‘Christian nation’ will like it-I believe in God outside the public arena and will ignore it.
And yes, Clinton was magnificent. As usual.
By the way, Mitt, we still want those tax returns. Surely your cadre of accountants has redacted the important stuff by now.

As you saw from Breitbart, nothing Obama or the Democrats do will change the Republican narrative that Obama is not American, not Christian, and is a Muslim.

Sally – what you said! Exactly. BTW, these are the same people that 30 years ago wouldn’t allow a Jew to join their country club; now they are tearfully defending the Jewish homeland. Revolting.

I was unaware of this hypocrisy from the (f)right side. Do you have any links that delve into details that we might be able to peruse?
No worries if you don’t. What you said sounds about right (knowing the oppression of blacks & hispanics in this country) unfortunately.

Excellent post Sally!
Where are those pesky tax returns??? I don’t want any more GOP POUTRAGE – - I want economic reality.

Considering the difference between the Repuglican’s behavior and their mealy-mouthed lies, I’m surprised that they haven’t been struck by lightning for blasphemy – regardless of whether or not their version of God exists.

Perfectly explained. It’s a matter of separation of church and state, although I understand the pragmatic move and it’s more important to re-elect this President. The alternative would crush this country.
We’ll get there one day, when it won’t be necessary. Change always moves slowly and in spurts.

Maybe I am the only one that is seeing this but, isn’t it the pinnacle of hypocrisy that the Republicans will lose their proverbial “shit” when the Dems remove a passage referring to God from their platform, but are perfectly fine with their nominee not believing in their Christian God AT ALL! Mormonism is completely against every pillar of Christianity from the Trillogy, to Jesus being the Son of God, to there being only one God! On and on! Mormonism teaches that all people if they do enough good works can be their very own God. Now you’d think this wouldn’t be something that could escape the watchful eyes of the Breitbarts of the world, but somehow it has.

ON THE MONEY DAN! :)
The GOP’s religious right hypocrisy couldn’t be more evident than w/their mormon rep who DOES go against their teachings.

I am a Christian, although one following a path that most would deny (and because of the “Good Christians”, I often wish I could NOT be one). I am offended that religion, a private thing, was dragged in like that. Their support for Israel and forcing their beliefs on everyone else is a major, if not THE major source of conflict in this world – and it’s all unnecessary (and IMO, a SIN)!
I recognize that there are groups that wish Israel gone – the Jews to vanish from the face of the earth. Shoot, listen to the rhetoric coming from the President of Iran. They (Israel and the Jews) have a right to exist just as all do, but so do the Palestinians. From the things I’ve read, the real problem is the same one we face in this country – GREED. The Palestinians want the developed land all for themselves, the Jews don’t want to share, and everyone suffers because of the hostility and selfishness.

If anyone looked at a map of the West Bank back in 1967 you would see a big green blob in the middle of Isreal. If they had created 2 states at that time, Isreal would have been able to protect their borders. No, they have strung out the process, all the while grabbing up land on the West Bank until, now, if you look at a map of the WB, it looks like a piece of mesh. There is no way to protect their borders now. The Palistinians aren’t angels, but they have been occupied for the last 45 years under conditions the South Africans didn’t have to suffer under Aparteid. I feel Isreal is using the Zionist here in the US.

This whole “problem” would have been simply solved. Instead of asking the people assembled to vote on whether God should be in the platform, just ask God for his one vote. I would take silence as an abstention, and that would be the end of that.

Hrafnkell Haraldsson –
A BIG part of the Democratic base are Christian Liberal Dems. Insulting, ignorant blog posts mocking God written by atheists don’t do the Dem party any favors.
You assert that “Divine Grace” is “mythology” as if your opinion is factual. Then you swipe at Republicans who have “an aversion to history”…
You are the one with no historical basis for your ruminations: Our 1st President, George Washington, related a tale about seeing an angel on the delaware & attributes it for success.
Our American quest for independence was also underpinned w/prayer: “The First Continental Congress (Sept. 5-Oct. 26, 1774), comprised of delegates from all the colonies except Georgia, met for the first time, in September 1774. In a letter to his wife, John Adams described the spiritual backdrop as the colonies were about to launch the Revolutionary War for independence”
IT’S YOU WHO HAS AN AVERSION TO HISTORY.
This blog post is insulting, untruthful and you compound the error Democrats made in removing “God” from their platform by writing it.
Good grief. These are amateur mistakes.

Elisa: show me the workings of “divine grace” in American history. Your two examples are hardly compelling evidence of divine grace in American history, or perhaps you have a different interpretation of “divine grace”?
Clearly, if you’re following the Republican narrative, the story is that by the grace of God alone has America been made great. This is the underpinning of the peculiar GOP understanding of American exceptionalism. The result is that everyone who denies this divine grace denies God and therefore is not American. The idea is that only Christians are real Americans.
This is not something Democrats want to support as it is opposed to everything a modern liberal democracy is based upon: tolerance, diversity, and pluralism: inclusion, not exclusion.
I do not think the amateur mistakes are mine.

Please hand over all of your mythological money which clearly states not your belief. It must be so hard for you to have that money which places In God We Trust as inscription.
Your Life is the prime example of Divine Grace that you ask for. Your life is no accident and it is clear by how we each live it. For what is life if it is lived like smoke and then gone?
You are Divine Grace. What makes most of us care about killing so that we do not? Why care about each other, what we do and who we are? Why take time to do anything if life is nothing. Why don’t we live 500 years? Chemicals? Ego? I don’t think anyone but angry Steven Hawkins believes that. There are too many questions to exclude the possibility of God just as there are too many galaxies in space to say we are the only ones around. So please, hand me your money.

I’m 54 years old, spent three years among the dominionists (who would have shouted it to the winds if Washington had reported seeing an angel), was in the mainstream churches (steeplejacked) for the next 25 years (almost all conservative “Good Christians” who would grasp at straws to “prove” the Bible), and this is the first time I ever heard such a tale. I don’t believe it for a second… it sounds like a Barton fever-dream.
I’ve also read history, including the sanitized bullshit they used to teach in the schools, the far more accurate version taught in the universities (because their work goes back to source documents and they aren’t trying to propagandize kids), as well as the history that’s not taught because it’s of the people that had the land taken from them (and which shows how evil this country really has been for most of its existence).
“Divine Grace” in the early years of this country led to some of the worst atrocities in history.
That doesn’t compute in my book. It’s not Divine Grace. Divine Grace doesn’t encourage rape, murder, theft, disenfranchisement, destruction of cultures and heritage, hatred for the innocent, and all in Jesus’ Name.

I am a Progressive Christian, and I do not subscribe to the politicizing of God or my faith as a way to win votes. The political party that uses God this way better have policies that continue God;s mission in the world. Is this done by the GOP? If you do not include the enforcement of live birth of babies to mothers regardless of circumstances there really is not any other thing they support. This hypocrisy is shared with the more fundamental Christian evangelicals who demand that their representation of God be in their government, and not much else. Not a lot of fun for the rest of us “heathens” who Christian or not, fail to pass their litmus tests. I am not and will not support these extremists haters who are fighting all the wrong battles and are as lost as they can be in their self righteousness and stubborn, often prideful ignorance. I am a progressive Christian that sees the environment, society, and the systems we operate in our civilizations as being at odds with sustainability and I try to discover new ways to address these problems ethically, responsibly and with a long term benefit at the heart of my pursuits. This world was meant to last, and we were given this Earth by God to be good stewards of, and to protect for future generations, not squander, pollute and destroy. I am voting for Obama because his ideas give promise to a future where these problems are not only solvable, but a priority in the hearts and minds of Americans who love this country, and planet too much to see it destroyed by our hubris.

Okay I am probably the youngest person commenting on this story. Im 22 and yes i am a democrat and I did vote for Obama. I am a Christian and I am honestly sick of people bashing him. Yes I will say I did bash Bush back then but the Bible does say to “Pray for our leaders.” And I am confused slightly about this whole He took God out of the platform thing. Now Im not a expert on world geography but isnt Jerusalem the captial of Israel anyways? And honestly, if you ask me like someone mentioned.. WE as a country took God out– we was being greedy ( hence the fight over oil) And yes I may not agree with everything Obama does and say, but still at the end of the day, God put him there for a reason. And if everyone else was put in the white house for ONE DAY, heck maybe an hour two hours top- I bet the people who talk trash constantly would change thier minds in a heart beat. I know I couldn’t do it for a fact. But whoever God wants in the Office in Novemeber is chosen by God ultimately.

That whole floor vote was an embarrassment. Those who voted NO to keeping the word God in the platform were childish in believing that being “right” over a debate point is more important than winning an election. This is not High School Debate Club. The “winner” is not decided by an impartial panel of judges based upon the logic of his/her rhetoric.
I don’t believe the word “God” should be in any political platform because I believe in separation of Church and State, but if I had been in that crowd, my vote would have been YES because NO ONE gets a chance to improve the country if their party cannot win an election. Period.
Those floor-vote-”no” morons might be happy to sit on their high horses and tell students in two years, “Sorry there’s no more pell grants, but it was more important to take the word God out of the platform than to win the election” or tell hungry children in two years “Sorry you don’t have money for school lunches any more, but it was more important to take the word God out of the platform than to win the election,” etc — but I would rather we WIN the election and prevent the catastrophe of Bush Redux.
Politics (like life) is about picking your battles. This was a STOOOOOOOPID battle for the dems to be fighting, among themselves, at such a critical time.
My two cents.
