Instead of Giving Back Their Salaries, Republicans Offer to Treat Themselves to Pizza
By: Sarah JonesApr. 9th, 2013more from Sarah Jones
In the wake of Republican lawmakers’ silence following President Obama’s pledge to give back 5% of his salary in solidarity with federal workers furloughed due to the sequester, Republican commenters lost no time in denouncing it as a meaningless gimmick. ‘What will $20,000 do for the debt,’ they screamed.
Speaking of gimmicks, today Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus bashed the President for wasting money by having dinner with Republican Senators, and in light of the sequester, offered to buy them pizza. He said, “(D)ue to the sequester, it only seems appropriate that they avoid the considerable security expenses of dining at an upscale restaurant… In fact, I’d like to offer to order pizza for them and have it delivered to the White House.”
Reince Priebus’ statement statement:
“I’m glad to see that as he enters his fifth year in office, President Obama is finally trying to reach across the aisle in the form of dinners with Senate Republicans. However, I would like to offer some advice. Since the president has been complaining loudly about the cutbacks they’ve had to make at the White House—including tours for schoolchildren—due to the sequester, it only seems appropriate that they avoid the considerable security expenses of dining at an upscale restaurant,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “Instead of eating out as the president and senators did last month, I suggest they eat in. With their budgets tight in the struggling economy, many families are doing exactly that. It’s only fitting our leaders do the same with the government facing such a large budget deficit.
“In fact, I’d like to offer to order pizza for them and have it delivered to the White House. I know I’m not invited to dinner, but as RNC Chairman I’m happy to do my part to foster a spirit of bipartisanship if it means we can tackle the debt and deficit—and achieve real spending and tax reform. If we’re lucky, maybe the pizza will serve to illuminate an important economic point for President Obama: instead of redistributing the slices, the best way to make everyone happy is to make the pie bigger. It’s as true for dinner as it is for economic growth and opportunity.”
The President paid for the first dinner (much nicer than a pizza), and if Reince doesn’t like the way this next dinner is going, he ought to speak to Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), as he is co-ordinating it.
Furthermore, Talking Points Memo pointed out that the dinner is actually being held at the White House, so there will not the cost of additional security (could Republicans be any more petty? They are obsessed with this President’s security costs, while never acknowledging their part in inciting the increased need for it).
Priebus would know where the dinner was being held, if only he paid attention; but as RNC chair, perhaps paying attention to facts isn’t a part of his job description. He’s very busy creating much ado about the cost of security over a dinner with lawmakers, while his party’s elected officials try to kill the minimum wage. He should be championing the President’s exhaustive efforts to find common ground with the Republicans; but instead, Priebus is digging deep for a petty, irrelevant, bumper sticker attack line about pizza.
Still no word from Republican lawmakers who’ve allegedly been so terrified about our debt problem that they say we can’t afford to feed starving children anymore. Yet we have the money to pay their top 5% tier pay, even as the House works less hours, thanks to the Republicans’ idea of hard work.
Americans want Congress to kick in and share a few sacrifices, so the party chairman of the Republican Party that brought you the debt ceiling debacle that led to the sequester that led to the furloughed workers offers to buy pizza. This is the party that admits that President Obama did not want these cuts; while they did. So what do they do when it comes to walking their talk?
Republicans will save the taxpayer a few dollars by treating themselves to pizza once. Very serious people.

I think Rinse Prebus needs to start concentrating on what his party is doing across these United States. He doesn’t need to worry about pizza or dinners. He needs to worry about the Republicans who are going to lose office in the next elections. He needs to worry about these idiots who absolutely refuse to do anything about the economy and who want to institute an economy killing austerity program. He needs to worry about the women who are not going to vote for them, the Latinos and the Asians who know that they are simply outsiders who are not wanted by the Republicans who are not going to vote for them.
In other words, Rinse is in deep do do

They’re concentrating all right and I wouldnt be shocked if they were giggling at the upcoming prospect of what they have in store…..
GOP senator: ‘Let’s use the debt limit. Yeah, it’s leverage.’
“This notion that we can’t use the debt limit to talk about deficit reduction is ridiculous,” Portman said during an interview with Politico reporter Ben White. “I think this is an opportunity, and I think the timing is actually pretty good.”

I’m tired of hearing from Republicans about Obama reaching across the aisle. Every times he does the Republican leadership turns its back. The republicans have no intention of compromising on anything. They will continue to do their obstructionism until 2014.
Meanwhile our country will suffer and be further driven into the ground, by the Republicans.

You and I know what the GOP is…
But most American voters don’t? They don’t see the GOP the same way and expect bipartisanship. Obama, by continuously extending the offers, is making the GOP look worse.
Besides, Obama doesn’t have a choice. He can’t unilaterally pass a budget without Congress. We have a system of checks and balances for a reason.
The only way I can see remedying this situation is to reduce the GOP numbers in Congress next year. End of story. And as an American who doesn’t have Congressional representation despite paying federal income taxes, I will show no sympathy towards any lefties who stay home in 2014.
Every election is important.

I’m a little concerned about these threats to ‘stay home’ or run alternate candidates in the primaries in 2014. I’m afraid of 2010 happening all over again. We need to change the makeup of Congress if we want to make any progress at all, not make things worse by acting like idiots.

The best they can do is pizza?
Come on. I like pizza as much as the next person, but how lame can you get? Especially since DC doesn’t have any decent pizza places at all. There was one pizza place here that I thought had excellent Chicago-style deep dish pizza until I tasted a much better one while vacationing in Florida of all places.
Priebus makes me sick. They got rid of the black guy who delivered all those great victories in 2010 for this clown?

Or, if that’s too difficult, just remove all the vowels from his name, like ancient Hebrew — it becomes:

This latest “offer” helps reinforce it.

I would serve them each 1 of the .99 cent individual frozen micro-wave meal packs that I eat when a cheap quick meal is required. And also with a cup of water added (but only if they ask for it). Road kill would be too extravagant in my opinion and might offend the common people who are now existing in a third world nation and status; thanks to their actions. Or how about some of Bo’s dog food (not the good canned stuff only the dry stuff). But it would be a candle light dinner meaning we have turned off all of the power in the White House now (preparing to re-enter into the dark ages again) to be thrifty. They would also be required to bring their own toilet paper; that stuff don’t grow on trees you know. God bless America! The land of the free.

Republican commenters lost no time in denouncing it as a meaningless gimmick. ‘What will $20,000 do for the debt,’ they screamed.
What would the $9 Billion that mysteriously went missing in Iraq do for the debt?
What would the $1.441 Trillion cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars do for the debt?
Funny how repubs never worried about either of those . . .

Republicans may never win another national election of any kind. They are digging themselves further and further into a hole. Their credibility is shot, they show no compassion toward anyone but the wealthy elite, they’ve used fear tactics and false innuendos to coerce the American public to believe their way is the right way. Fewer and fewer people are believing them anymore. I’m ashamed I ever voted Republican. It won’t happen again any time in the near future.

Is this a joke? Obama gives back $20,000 dollars, and Democrats go crazy saying how amazing he is. One hour on Air Force One cost $180,000. Maybe if him or his family would cut back on one vacation, he could give back an actually useful sum. He’s got time to fly around and golf, but not enough to cut down on expenses and reopen the tours of the White House. What a fake.

Oh, not that lame ‘vacation’ thing again!
I can’t believe how many right wingers are worried about the White House tours when people are losing jobs, cancer patients are being turned away, and children are going hungry. How about getting some priorities straight here, Peter? The biggest reason for cancelling the tours is that it frees up Secret Service hours, and possibly stops layoffs in that agency. But we can’t have the president keeping any jobs, now can we?
And if you think what the president has given back is not ‘useful’, what about the sum of zero most of the GOP Congress has given back?

My point is that it’s a small part of our heritage that kids won’t get to experience. Believe it or not, that little bit of money for tours won’t kill the budget.
And no. I don’t laud Obama for giving back money when Republicans don’t. It’s a blatant obvious political ploy. It doesn’t do anything helpful, and is just a way for him to try to get on the good side of people. Seriously? Do you really think it is anything other than a political ploy?

Just what is the “political ploy” of which you speak? What does the POTUS stand to gain from this gesture? He is not running for office again, so it’s unlikely to be votes.

President Obama has taken fewer vacations than the previous two Presidents. He and the First Lady have personal income, which they use to pay the expenses for the few family vacations they have taken during the past five years. The Secret Service and Air Force One are security precautions used by every POTUS and would be charged to the Federal budget no matter who was President.

“One hour on Air Force One cost $180,000.”
And that one hour
- helps train the military flight and support personnel
- keeps the civilian ATC’s, ground and support staff employed
- keeps members of the press who fly with the President gainfully employed
Why do you hate the military and American workers, Pete?

Apr. 10th, 2013 at 1:34 pm
Yea, because he definitely brings all of his media with him on his vacations. It cost roughly $720000 for a flight from D.C. to Florida and back. Believe it or not, cutting out one flight won’t mean those people will lose their jobs. And then he could actually use that money usefully, say opening up the tours again, donating a considerable sum instead of $20000. Let’s be real here. Obama isn’t God. He doesn’t make the best decisions all the time. He could cut out one vacation and do a lot of good instead of this phoney stuff.

And surely, the others should have given back the same. Here’s my point. If Obama is going to give money back, give back a considerable sum. Don’t give back $20,000 just as a political ploy. You know it is. It’s pretty obvious.
And secondly, don’t utilize ad hominem arguments. You lose all credibility.
