Depressed Republican Leaders Are Convinced Obama Will Easily Win Reelection
By: Guest ContributorMay. 18th, 2011more from Guest Contributor
Republican leaders are now convinced that without a stronger candidate, President Obama will easily cruise to reelection in 2012.
A Politico story on Mitch Daniels today began with this sentence, “Top Republicans are increasingly convinced that President Barack Obama will be easily reelected if stronger GOP contenders do not emerge.”
I suspect that Republicans are begging Mitch Daniels to get in the race for no other reason than to at least give Mitt Romney a credible challenger. Daniels is as interesting and exciting as watching paint dry, but his candidacy would represent a serious upgrade to the current 2012 GOP field. The truth is that the dull Daniels won’t beat Obama, but at least he won’t embarrass the party.
Hurting the entire party is exactly what the GOP leadership is dreading with any of these current Republican candidates. Top Republicans are coming to the realization that the prospect of enticing a top tier candidate into the race is looking grim, so they are trying to find a candidate who can at least hold the base and not cost them anything more than the presidency.
None of the current candidates motivates the base, and Mitt Romney could actually depress Republican turnout if he wins the nomination. The only potential candidate who could fire up the base in a race against Obama is Sarah Palin, but she is reviled to such a degree outside of the GOP that her name atop the ticket would boost turnout among Democrats and Independents who despise her. Palin would be an unmitigated disaster for Republicans at all levels in every race.
Palin’s own employer, Fox News, has dismissed her as a potential candidate by labeling her the queen kingmaker of 2012. Sarah Palin’s standing is so poor that new PPP survey found that she would lose a general election match up to Dennis Kucinich, 43%-36%. Sarah Palin is the one Republican with national stature to motivate the base and raise money. She would also hand her party a debilitating defeat in 2012.
If the GOP couldn’t beat Obama with McCain at the top of the ticket in 2008, they know they have no chance with Mitt Romney or any of the other Not Ready for Prime Time Players guiding the ship in 2012.
Unless they can convince someone exciting to enter the race for their nomination by the end of the summer, it looks like Republicans are going to shift their resources to congressional races, throw in the towel early and concede the reelection of Barack Obama.
Republicans were probably never going to beat Obama in 2012, but who would have guessed that they might not even try.

If I may please;
Ron Paul is the only presidential candidate who would cut enough spending to avert a debt crisis. Only he will restore constitutionally sound money. And, only he will strengthen our national defense by bringing our troops home and putting an end to the nation-building that is draining our country.
Watch Dr Paul question Ben Bernanke if you doubt Paul understands even subtle aspects of the economy. Imagine Palin or Romney doing that?
Other candidates speak flowery words and tell nothing of how anything will get done. Mr. Paul is very different.
Constitutionally, legislatively, and morally, Ron Paul has no equal. His 22 year voting record speaks for itself.
Please help give America back Her Constitution.
Ron Paul for President in 2012.
Thank You

Good for Mr. Paul, will he be the one to take the separation of church and state literaly and remove the terms like “In God we trust”, “one nation under god”, “so help me god”, and such. Worship should be an individual’s prerogative and not a nation’s. We could accomplish so much more as a nation once we pray or not, as we choose and not try to imposse that choice among the nation as a whole.

If you knew anything about politics or law you’d know that there is no such thing as a the separation of church and state, no matter how many times the media reports as such. There is an establishment clause that says the state cannot invent its own church and force everyone to join, which was a direct response to Anglicanism in England.
Zeno
May. 22nd, 2011 at 5:36 pm
If you knew as much about law as you think you do, you’d understand that the establishment clause has been clearly interpreted by the courts (including the Supreme Court) as forbidding any government policy or action that tends to favor sectarian religion. You can say you think this is wrong, but it’s nonsense to claim that “there is no such thing as a separation of church and state.” Such separation is a principle of established law and political policy in the U.S.

Set to the side the fact that Ron Paul will never be President (which is fine, because as a Congressman, he is more capable of getting his message of libertarianism to Americans…and this is not necessarily a bad thing).
Let’s say he IS elected President. A lot of people seem to think that the POTUS has complete carte blanche over what laws get passed and repealed. And he has to get his agenda through the legislature first. Forget that most Democrats probably won’t vote for many points on his agenda. Most GOPs won’t either.
Ron Paul is a better messenger than he is a legislature. In other words, he’s fine right where he is.
Edward

Actually you are misunderstanding Ron Paul. His agenda is to veto every unconstitutional bill. He’s not that eager to be signing new legislation as president, unless its to repeal something.

I think as for myself, there are two trains of thought here. One is again I have to agree with Rey that something is going to be pulled out of the wool to scare people into voting Republican for nobody.
Secondly, this huge amount of absolutely nonsensical biblical laws that the GOP is trying to pass in the house. Is that because they know they cannot beat Obama. And they probably won’t have leverage After 2012? They are playing fast and loose with peoples rights and to what avail? If they know the Democrats are going to take back over after 2012 All of this stuff will be repealed. I don’t know if the Democrats are going to take the house back but they sure better. so are they just killing time? That’s what it appears to me they are doing because they’re certainly doing nothing for America or for the American people.

Besides the usual voter suppression, gerrymandering, and ballot tampering, I suspect that on local, state, and congressional levels, we have to look out for false flag candidates. In the Presidential race, watch out for faithless electors. In their own eyes, after all, only they are fit to “rule”. Given that conviction, anything that favors their side is “fair”.

I realize this stuff sounds pretty droopsnoot, but I am not advocating defeatism. I am advocating vigilance. New candidates purporting to be from any part of the spectrum should have their backgrounds vetted, and so should electors. That’s where diligent investigation comes in, including by people like us.

Well said @Shiva. Still can’t understand why the GOP is pushing the legislation they are, not pushing legislation that needs to be forwarded, and promoting the weakest of their heard to the front of the 2012 presidential race. They have either totally given up and are banking on an absolute failure in Obama’s second term or are dead set in pandering to their fanatic base hoping for an increase in mental illness in the constituency thereby increasing their shot at success in 2016.

Anyone who knows Mitch Daniels’ history would also know that even if he doesn’t come across as a kook, he is still a dangerous man. He has defunded Planned Parenthood in Indiana as its governor, cut funding for things like education, and he played a role in GW’s administration toward turning the surplus Bill Clinton left into a deficit. I don’t care how reasonable he, Mitt Romney, or Tim Pawlenty appear, especially in comparision to the nutcases who have become the face of their party. The fact remains that all of them espouse an ideology that is inimical to the well-being and progress of this country.

Anne, as a resident of Indiana, I can co-sign to everything you wrote. Daniels is not the “reasonable” republican he passes himself off to be. He would be a disaster for this country, as would any republican.

there are a few things that I agree with Dr. Paul on. But if you take his ideas literally you know that they will never come to pass. The two parties are too firmly entrenched in BS to ever live an idyllic life like Ron Paul wants or advocates. secondly his past will come out with his connections to racist writings and he will be cooked

This is the inevitable result of pandering to the far right to stir up the crazy so they could gain opposition in attempt to destroy Obama’s presidency early on (healthcare reform). They failed, and now they have to suffer the consequences. What frightens me is the GOP is not the type to accept the result of their own behavior and reform from within.
Instead, they will double down on fear. I would not put it past them at this point to deliberately attempt to stir up a terrorist attack, as they are already doing in response to Bin Laden’s death.
They don’t accept the rule of law if a Democrat is in charge.

Romney will NEVER be the nominee. Period. Why? He is Mormon, and the GOP is controlled by born again Dominionists. It will come down to a Pawlenty or a Daniels. As for Palin? RUN SARAH RUN! And she most likely will…after she draws it out for the high drama of it all.
My mom was a Dominionist and a Republican. I gaurantee you that she would never, ever have voted for a Mormon OR a Catholic. This is how these zealots think.

A note to Elizabeth:
You’re kidding, right? About President Obama not being a natural-born citizen? There really are still people who are riding that wave? Even the RepubliCONS hero, Rush Limbaugh, is saying that the birther issue is not valid. Why are you still hanging onto this ridiculous notion that Obama is not a natural-born citizen. What more proof do you need? Are you saying that the great state of Hawaii is not a part of the United States of America? It was incorporated into the USA in 1959. Obama was born in 1961 – 2 years AFTER Hawaii achieved statehood.
By the way, just so you know and you can now finally take the blinders off your eyes, and the cotton instead of a brain, out of your head, it may interest you to know that the 2008 RepubliCON candidate, John McCain, was born in Panama. You know Panama, don’t you? It’s a Latin American country – located in Central America. I have a map if you need one. McCain is not a natural born citizen either if you stick to your ridiculous idea about Obama. If McCain had won the 2008 election, would you complain that he is not a natural born citizen either. President Obama is more of a citizen than McCain. Also, if you need a definition of natural born citizen, you can look it up online under Merriam-Webster. That’s a dictionary (in case you didn’t know).

You’re special. McCain’s parents were US Citizens and his birth in Panama is the result of US military presence there. You obviously know nothing about what constitutes natural birth citizenship.
The long form document Obama released has been heavily edited or enhanced on the computer. No one knows for sure if it is real or not. That plus the numbering issue (where people born much later than him have lower certificate numbers) casts far more reasonable doubt on his status than 95% of police investigations use.
Rush says it is a non-issue because it is. It is too late, the government already failed. If we found out tomorrow he was born in Indonesia (the place he calls home), what would we do? Appoint McCain? Bump up Biden?

Yes Marvin, your are absolutely right. Obama came into office after 8 years of Republican leadership and a mess that mess that started long ago. Congress should have gotten a clue by the huge amounts of Pork that were attached to each bill. Where did they think the money was coming from. All the while continuing to press for Tax Cuts while protecting their rich campaign contributors happy, giving them tax free passes at their every whim. Arrogant. Sarah Palin is the Perfect example of Really Dumb Broad who makes it big, because theres always a blind crowd that loves to follow stupidity.

Only a fool would be complacent enough to stay home due to thinking that the election is a done deal. I have learned from observation not to trust the Party of No, because they have this win-at-any-cost mentality that has led them to commit voter fraud or intimidation. While the GOP has some truly lousy candidates, their regressive, ossified ideology should be the true cause for worry. No matter how “reasonable” or “moderate” a Romney, a Pawlenty, a Huntsman, or a Daniels might seem, the fact remains that none of them can be president without embracing and implementing the wacky, reality-challenged ideology of the GOP. It’s worth noting that Michigan governor Rick Snyder ran as a “moderate” and sold himself as a “tough nerd.” People foolishly fell for it, and he has been an unmitigated disaster from day one.

Your point is so true about Americans voting Republican. Did anyone become privy to the fact that Newt Gingrich, while he was on his rampage to Impeach President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky wasting Millions of Dollars, probably knew the whole time that Senator Burton, his Co-Chair was hiding an even bigger secret? In case you missed it, Sen. Burton fathered an illegitimate Child 20+ years prior, opting out of any Financial Support for either of them. Now, that would be the ultimate repugnant hypocrisy of two Elected Republican Officials beating up on another for probably the lesser of evils involving escapades of Adultery.Mistresses,a Bastard Baby or a one tine BJ with a conniving Intern!
There always seems to be a hugh lack of Morals coming from people who are intent on gaining the trust the of the American People. And they know how to hide it . It’s the long running old boy tradition of supporting each other rather than supporting the American People. We put them in office and then let them do whatever they want for for Four Years. On our dime. Wake up, If you can’t see that Republicans are already backtracking on the impossible promises they made last November and falling all over each other in the process your an idiot. Screw Walmart. They won’t stop them from outsourcing, so does that make it right for you to still shop there? And why don’t you save some money with a local Credit Union. Most are “Member” owned. A group of like minded people who watch your money and your back. Screw Bank Of America, Wall Street, Big Oil, and anyone who thinks increasing Taxes on the Rich is a bad idea. Whose money did they take to get rich? You, Your Parents, Your Grandparents, your Community, and they robbed you of peace of mind. I say we get roving gangs to go out and get a few to Tar and Feather!
Don’t mind my rambling. I’m just a little P.O at the those who complain but refuse to accept the responsibility to STOP doing business with those who continue to RIP: you off. The ONLY way a GOP/Teatard candidate could possibly beat Obama is if the Koch brothers and others of their ilk pour in hundreds of millions of dollars to bolster an unknown candidate that has no voting record. The GOP/Teatards have been exposed as thoroughly as possible as being essentially anti-American in their viewpoint and essentially pro-corporation/pro-mythology, every step of the way.
Even if Wall Street collapses today, there’s not a single GOP candidate that could possibly produce a workable scheme to defeat Obama. That’s because the only GOP method for accomplishing anything is to provide tax cuts to the most wealthy Americans. In a Wall Street collapse, such a campaign promise would be suicide.
