What Do GOP Targets Rice, Sherrod, Holder, and Van Jones Have in Common?
What do Eric Holder, Shirely Sherrod, Susan Rice and Van Jones have in common?
I mean, other than that they have all been targets of Republican-led witch hunts, false allegations, selectively edited videos, deliberately misunderstood protocol, and general clownishness? Oh, that’s right. They’re all black.
They have all been accused of being incompetent, yet not a one of them are.
They have all been targeted relentlessly by Republicans with non-stop false allegations and yet, the media continues to carry water for the white male Republicans leading the charge.
Where are the Sunday shows demanding that John McCain make himself accountable for the clearly false allegations he leveled at Susan Rice?
What is it about SOME people that puts them in a category where even white Democrats will abandon them to the wolves or tolerate non-stop attacks on their character and competency, as if it were a given instead of an outrage?
The Washington Post pointed out that more than 80 of the signatories of the letter sent by 97 House Republicans condemning Susan Rice (as if these Republicans have any room to make accusations based on competency) are white males and nearly half are from the former confederacy.
Here’s the most obvious tell that a double standard is at hand: While the media will hold Republicans’ hands in order to not only condone their accusations but give weight to them with zero evidence, in response to the charge of racism we are told this can’t be proven.
So, the life work of four (well, we could include the President in this group to get to five) leading black public officials is a free-for-all target requiring no evidence, but the reputations of the white males making the accusations are too important to smear with what are claimed to be unproven accusations.
I have just proven that a double standard exists.
So now, let’s all pretend we are watching Sesame Street. What do these four (five) people have in common? What is the justification for the double standard?
It’s not that they are Democrats, though this is a good starting point when it comes to Republican witch hunts (see Bill Clinton). No, at this particular time we have four prominent, qualified people who have been the target of complete character assassination.
No one has sincerely apologized to any of them, including the media that willingly allowed itself to be duped by Breitbarted tapes.
No one has treated their reputations as if they were all a person has in this world, and yet that is the assumption made of the Republican white male. We mustn’t accuse the white male Republican of racism! That is scandalous. Yet they were free to inaccurately accuse Shirely Sherrod of racism against a white farmer. See, it’s okay to accuse a black public official of being a racist, but the media wouldn’t do that to a white person without “proof”.
Do I think racism is the actual motivating factor? No, I don’t. I think it’s a convenient political tool Republicans are using to both fuel their base and accuse those whom they view as most vulnerable. Now, why are these folks the most vulnerable? Because Republicans assume that it’s okay to smear the character and life work of a black person. The assumption is that there is not as much at stake as there would be were you to do that to a white male, and furthermore that the media and the public will give them a pass due to an inherent bias against black people.
I don’t believe that John McCain is a racist as the general public defines racism. But I believe that he purges his inner bitterness at being a loser by attacking “down” with immunity. He views Rice as a safe target and the television media has proven him correct. In other words, he is using the inherent bias per the racism of others as a weapon, which is what racism really is – a tool of the elite used to maintain their power. John McCain is guilty of using racial bias to perpetrate a witch hunt against Susan Rice, and much of the media is guilty of assisting him.
The 97 House Republicans who signed that letter also have some explaining to do. Not only is it none of their business since the House doesn’t confirm, but they are obviously either too misinformed to be in office or they are using their power to lead a witch hunt that appears to rely on yet another false conspiracy theory about yet another prominent black person.
I would like these Republicans to be held to the same scrutiny and standards as they assume is their right to hold others to. This means that unproven accusations with no foundations are free game.
So have at it. Come up with your best conspiracy theories about John McCain and lead a charge to destroy his entire career and character just because you lost your job or an election. The accusations don’t need to be even remotely related to facts – you can selectively edit a video in order to distort the meaning of his words, or use the fact that intelligence can’t be disclosed in order to attack him over what he is not free to say. There’s nothing you can’t accuse him of – because in a just world, his character and life’s work are as valueless as he deemed Susan Rice’s.

After he sang “bomb bomb bomb Iran” to an audience he has no foreign policy credibility and he is a war monger.
Ask Rachel Maddow she had a segment on his mispoken words the other night. We need a campaign to get him ostracized from Sunday morning talk shows.

Racism is definitely among the reasons these folks are being targeted, along with the fact that at least 3 of them have been targeted for their associations with President Obama who is also black. The folks targeting them cannot come out and say that racism is at least one reason, but there is no other explanation for the venom and vitriol directed at these folks. Of course, the main objective is to discredit and delegitimize this president in spite of failing to keep him from being re-elected.

There is no other way of stating the obvious… They are all racist. Certain part of the news media included. Most if not all will counter that charge by giving slanted views about staff members and others they are acquainted with politically and sometimes personally…. They are still racists in 3 piece suits that in the early 1990s that Klan leader David Duke was bragging about for the future.. No matter how many dumb statements they make. No matter how many times they violate national security. No matter how many time they use their little racist key words, the news media, ran by some of the same types will continue to be their racist lap dogs. Face it, racism has become just as high tech as the computer and the internet. No matter how educated minorities have become. No matter obtaining highest of positions by minorities in this nation. With some minorities are still slaves on their mythical national farm and they continue or are hell bent on continuing to be the overseers and masters. These are the ones that will always think they are superior just because their skin color is caucasian. These David Duke mindsets don’t need no other reason than that and the news media avenues to spread their hatred. No matter how stupid and dumb sounding we think they are they know they are doing. They know one of their best avenue is our nation’s congress to get their message to those that have the same mindsets to listen. Getting the news media, being part of the problem, responses they know are given since some in it have the same mindset. For good or bad it is their second best avenue to reach those with like mindsets. That is why types like McCain, Graham, Bachmann, Issa, McConell, Palin with her real american comments and Wilson with his lair comment to a Black president in joint session continue to be tolerated. This glorified coverage by certain news media outlets can only be viewed as complicity or condoning racism high tech style… …….

The republican spinmeisters have been rallying the base with this kind of rabble rousing about national security for almost 50 years. Every few years they succede in pulling enough voters from the center and use voter suppression tactics to put their candidates in office. Nixon in 1968, Reagan in 1980, Bush 2 in 2000. Obviously they have gone to the well now once to often
This kind of racially tinged character assasination they are using here is simply to keep the base boiling mad about national defense and setting the stage for the next election cycle. The problem they have here is that there aren’t any more commies. The USSR went extinct 22 years ago so they have to focus now on “non-white, non-Christian” societies as the national defense bogey man. This will only hurt the republicans in the long run.

BREAKING NEWS: John McCain is caught red-handed with campaign donations he never spent in 2008. Federal agents are now finding out, he had millions spent on clothes for Sarah Palin. Not just the thousands that were reported. Both are at risk of being indicted on federal charges. Also, a recently filed affidavit, claims Mr. McCain is tired of working in government and is looking for a way to commit a crime just so he can go back to prison where he was someone important. Sources say.

Because of their raceRice, Sherrod, Van Jones, PBO, and Holder are seen as “lesser persons” in spite of their many accomplishments. Make no mistake about it. This is why the republicans can get away with comments about “blah people,” “food stamp president,” “incompetent,” “lazy,” and the other epithets related to racism against Black Americans without being held accountable. There is a racial double standard in this country. In the minds of many White Americans still is the belief that a black person is not equal to a white person. Our president and his family are a great example of the American Family. The Obamas have been married only to each other, they love their kids, have good values, pay their taxes, love this country, etc. IOWs, they are what most Americans aspire to be, but according to many of the republicans, the only thing wrong with them is that they’re black. I visit the site, Little Green Footballs, where Charles Johnson, a former republican, often posts comments from the Fox News site. A majority of the comments posted on that site are based on racism and disparage the president, his wife, and his kids. The comments also parrot the talking points of McCain, Graham, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and the other RW hate mongers. And, yes, they get away with promoting racism because the players in our MSM give them a free pass to do so, but let PBO say anything about race, and the feeding frenzy begins, and the RW becomes apoplectic and proceeds to label him as being the racist. I recall when AG Holder said that Americans are afraid to discuss race, something that is certainly true. The right-wing wasted no time pasting the racist patch to his forehead. They say/do racist things but are quick to deny they’re racists. We’re the ones who are the racists because we didn’t understand that when they said/did what they said/did, they were only joking. Yeah, right.

I absolutely DO believe that Racism is at the heart of these attacks. The GOP is pissed because they lost “Whitey’s House” to a black man Again.
There are many indications that this is true and that the GOP are all for Racism. During the ’08 Elections, America’s Racism was clearly highlighted in many YouTube videos including >This one>
www.youtube.com/watch?v=T...
I have my doubts it’s getting any better.
The media has been completely complacent to this issue and that of the GOP being absolute and chronic LIARS about many things, many times. It’s pathetic. Unfortunately, there are only a few “True Journalists” such as Sarah Jones, that do make a concerted effort to call out the GOP on these issues but it isn’t enough. I think Americans should be able to expect ALL Media (short of Fox News) to report the truth and to illustrate the Lies and Hypocrisy that is displayed on an almost daily basis. Otherwise, the media becomes guilty and complicit of the same, losing total credibility IMO.
Now with Obama winning by another landslide, we’ll have to endure another 4 years (minimum) of GOP/Republican slander, lies, hypocrisy and racism and all the while, they will effectively and with the help of complacent media, flip and spin the facts to make it appear that it is the Democrats that are doing all of this.
I personally believe there should be strong, effective laws against Politician’s LIES. Mandatory Jail Sentences to those that lie when they are supposed to have character while “representing” Americans. Convictions would be plentiful with the help of media and YouTube. Prison might even have to release African Americans convicted of marijuana possession, to make room for lying politicians. Or the Prison Industrial Complex will have a new field day.

There is certainly proof that John McCain is an incompetent pilot. Anybody can get a plane up, landing it safely is something else. John crashed 5 Navy jets, and the internet seems to have some evidence that he was responsible for the fire on the USS Forrestal. Maybe that is why he is so bitter, he knows he, himself is incompetent. Maybe he can fly palin, but can he land her?

I think you can also include Sonia Sotomayor in this list. Similarly racially charged attacks were lodged against her when she was nominated to the Supreme Court- not smart enough, positions and achievements only attained through affirmative action, an “activist” judge for working with the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Organization.

Amen to the insightful comments from Anne,Eddie Powell and majii –Thank you for pointing out the obvious racism. Let’s not pretend people.
The only way we are going to keep America moving forward is to live from a place of truth-telling and not on the fantasy island the Republicans want to portray that suggests they are superior and the center of the universe. In fact, most of them are mediocre and only a few of them seem intelligent, IMO.
Sarah, while your article is very well done overall, I think you are off base in saying you don’t think the attacks are motivated by racism.
You point to “double standards” but you don’t make the connection that double standards are at the root of racism.
I would suggest that you seek input from blacks and other people of color who are more likely to be experts on racism. White people in general don’t get the subtler aspects. Check out diverse sources at whiteprivilegeconference.... in order to learn more about the nature and dynamics of racism.
