If you knew the stories I do about “evangelists” and Natives (not just my own people -Native Americans- but from talking with Native peoples from around the world), you would learn that non-violent, non-force-using, or non-deception-using “witnessing” is extremely rare. I also refuse people the “right” to knock on my door to “witness” (proselytize) because of the problems we’ve had with them… for instance, the common practice (they’ve been caught trying to do this to us and there is strong evidence they’d been doing it to us for years) of “annointing” and asking “God” to send misery, depression, and disasters to a person until that person “Repents” and “Comes back to Jesus”. In other words, practicing sorcery in Jesus’ name.

Funny, but in spite of all of THEIR efforts, I am still Christian. I don’t know why… I suspect I may be rather masochistic, but I am. Maybe it’s the experiences I’ve had and the fact that I refuse to believe in a God who is as cruel and capricious as the “Good Christians” preach.

BTW… what gets me is that people think they’re “witnessing” when they’re proselytizing. Witnessing is parallel to being a witness… and in a court of law, if you start telling people what to believe or quoting the Bible when you should be talking about what you’ve seen, heard, or experienced you would be admonished and maybe even thrown out of court. It’s the same principle.

Matthew 28:19-20 is the passage generally cited as the Great Commission. It says go preach, and baptize, but says nothing about using force. I personally am not comfortable with direct evangelism and simply hope that others might pick up on my example as a Christian. In a free country people have just as much right to knock on your door to evangelize as they do to ask for your vote or sell you something. You likewise have every right in the world to say no thank you.

The King James version was ‘translated’ by a committee of hand picked monks under the thumb of a psychotic king.

Along with adding and subtracting at will, James had them change the ‘thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live’ to ‘a witch.’
James had a bad conscience on that point.
