GOP Continues to Ignore Their Real Problem as Nikki Haley Elevates Tim Scott
The Republican Party continues in an effort to prove that it’s more than a party of old white men. The latest attempt comes in the person of Tim Scott, Nikki Haley’s choice to replace Jim DeMint in the Senate. DeMint resigned from the Senate to head The Heritage Foundation – a conservative think tank. (please excuse the oxymoron.) If you were hoping for someone sane, or less extreme than Jim DeMint, Haley’s choice will be a major disappointment.
Jenny Beth Martin, (President of the Tea Party Patriots) called Scott’s appointment: a “victory for conservative values”
Tim Scott has taken our core values seriously in the House, and we have every reason to expect similar principled behavior in the Senate.
The usual right wing suspects, like Freedomworks , are delighted by Haley’s decision which comes as no surprise after a review of his policy positions. Scott’s goals read like a what’s what from the Tea Party manual of delusion.
He shares the Tea Party belief that if the President invokes the 14th Amendment on the debt limit then he should be impeached because it’s so much better to welch on bills for loans on money that was already spent.
Scott conforms to the ideological but logically tortured Tea Party positions on marriage and a woman’s right to choose.
“I cosponsored two pro-life bills which have now passed the House of Representatives, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and the Protect Life Act. I also supported legislation, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, to repeal part of the national health care reform law that violates the freedom of religion granted to us by the First Amendment. Government is already overreaching into our homes and businesses; it can’t be allowed to do the same with our faith.
I also support traditional marriage, and spoke out against the President’s decision to no longer allow the Department of Justice to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court. I absolutely believe in keeping the institution of marriage as one solely between a man and woman. We must not allow the government to distort the meaning of marriage and instead, focus on building stronger families across America.”
He thinks families should be denied food stamps if the family’s income is reduced because one member of the family goes on strike but enthusiastically endorses giving our tax dollars to big oil.
Scott is a fervent support of so called “right to work” laws under which the only rights belong to employers.
His views on the Second Amendment, as reflected in a statement on his congressional website will undoubtedly please the NRA’s leadership.
“The Constitution grants all law-abiding Americans the right to bear arms, regardless of what some would lead you to believe. Our Second Amendment right is a fundamental freedom and a cornerstone of our democracy.
As Americans, we have the right to defend ourselves, our families and our property, and the federal government should never interfere with this right. I’ve cosponsored more than half a dozen bills protecting the rights of gun owners, including the Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act and the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act.
I remain steadfast in my commitment to uphold our Second Amendment rights.”
By elevating Tim Scott with an appointment to the Senate, the Republican Party continues to overlook it’s bigger problem: namely the party’s policies which continue to reflect a narrow, extreme and archaic vision of America. Once again, the problem is the message – no matter who the messenger is.

I live in the congressman’s former district, and may I say that I never voted for this Bozo. I never voted for Dummint or Lindsay (so deep in the closet he can’t see daylight) Graham. There are at least 42% of South Carolinians that you should feel sympathy for. Don’t write all of us off! He’s a token of the first order. Haley appointed him because she was instructed by the RNC to do so. I guess they consider it a win for them, minority and right-wing-nutjob, just as bad as, if not worse than Allen West.

I was wondering to SC have open primaries? If so[oh,oh my inner machiavellian self is coming out]think about how much havoc the 42% can wreak in the primary in 2014.

Trust me, Karen, I’m not one who writes off a state because of the Regressives who are running it. In this case, it’s especially true because of my own familial ties to your state. My mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother were all born in Lugoff. I agree with you about Tim Scott, because all he is is a wingnut of a darker hue. The Republicans never seem to learn that it’s not about the race or gender of their politicians, but about their policies which stink to high heaven. I wonder if Nikki Haley is dumb enough to actually think that he will attract many black voters. It hasn’t worked for fools like Herman Cain, Allen West, or Alan Keys.

Those old white guys still think black is the new black. Steel (fail), West (fail), Scott …
They’ll be in a quandary in 2016 because their token VP candidate won’t be able to run with Christie because he’s not healthy. Ha!

Ahhh, another token. They still don’t get it. Scott is a joke.
If it is seen as a message of betrayal, the skin color doesn’t matter to black folks. The GOP could consist of 80% minorities and it still wouldn’t matter if the policies stay the same. If anything it makes it worse, because black Americans reserve even MORE disgust for other blacks that they see as traitors or sell outs.
Colin Powell should have explained to these fools what an “Uncle Tom” is, a long time ago.

Along with Cruz and Rubio, (latinos,) Kelly Ayotte, (female,) the GOPpers now have all their tokens in place. Mission accomplished, now back to business as usual, we are now diversified. Nice try GOP, but in Reverend Al’s words, we gotcha.

Scott attended Presbyterian College from 1983 to 1984, and graduated from Charleston Southern University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. — wikipedia
scott’s academic credentials suggest he is an intellectual lightweight. although his mother worked 16 hr days to raise him and his brother, there is no indication that he ever earned his daily bread ‘by the sweat of his brow’. can’t be sure how he came to own an insurance agency or qualify as a financial adviser but again, how do these things qualify him for the august body known as the Senate of the United States of America?
his desire to bring the taliban approach to US govt ought to disqualify him but then that criteria would do away with all the tparty politicians(‘if I am first a Christian conservative then that dictates my response to all questions so my response first as a Christian conservative is to vote consistent with my value system.’). this attitude is impossible to reconcile with respecting the rights of those who do not share his faith and ‘values’. when the Senate needs him to view the nation as a whole, it can count on him to look at the issues through his narrow parochial lens.

He seems to be very proud of his co-sponsoring Pro Life bills, I wonder if either had provisions banning capital punishment, if not they can not be considered Pro Life by my standards.
