Racist Super Bowl Ad Backfires Gives Democrats Double Digit Lead In Michigan
Remember Republican Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra’s racist, xenophobic, and all around offensive Super Bowl ad? Voters in Michigan do, and Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow now has a double digit lead.
The ad:
A new PPP poll of the Michigan U.S. Senate race has found that incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow leads her likely Republican opponent in the fall, former Rep. Pete Hoekstra 51%-37%. Not surprisingly, running a racist ad full of Asian stereotypes has hurt the likely Republican nominee with voters.
Fifty four percent of voters said that they were familiar with the ad. Forty five percent of them said that the ad made them less likely to vote for Hoekstra, thirty seven percent said that it didn’t matter, and 16% said that the ad made them more likely to vote for Hoekstra.
Interestingly, the number of people who said the ad made them more likely to vote for Hoekstra (16%) is almost identical to the number of respondents who identified themselves as very conservative (17%). Tell me again why very conservative Americans don’t appear to have a predisposition towards racism in today’s political environment?
Conservatives have gone so far out there on the racist ledge that 37% of those who voted for John McCain in 2008 said that the ad made them more likely to vote for Hoekstra.
Sen. Stabenow could best be considered average in terms of popularity. Her favorable/unfavorable is 48%/41%, but the one big thing that she has going for her is that she is not an idiot who runs racist campaign ads in the local commercial break during halftime of the Super Bowl.
As far as I can tell this was the Hoekstra campaign’s plan:
1). Buy airtime during local halftime Super Bowl break.
2). Run the most offensive, racist, xenophobic ad we can think of.
3). When ad gets criticized by locally and nationally, DON’T APOLOGIZE! Instead defend it.
4). ????????
5). Win the election and deport Obama back to Kenya.
This is the problem with Republicans who live and exist only in the Fox News bubble. They probably thought that this was a great idea. After all, Fox News and the entire right wing media apparatus do this kind of thing every day. The Hoekstra campaign assumed that this ad would be a hard hitter and turn voters against the Democratic incumbent.
They couldn’t have been more wrong. This ad went beyond the usual garden variety negative ad that turns voters off. It was offensive, racist, and a turn off. The kind of ad that makes your eyes feel dirty after you watch it.
Hoekstra has lost a net ten points with Independents since he ran that ad. Republicans don’t get that Fox News doesn’t represent mainstream America. When they play to fringe, as the Hoekstra ad did, they push non-Republicans away from them.
Pete Hoekstra isn’t even his party’s nominee yet, and he may have already lost the election. What we are seeing already in 2012 is making the 2010 election look like an aberration, not a revolution, because the loony right can’t seem to keep it together long enough to win an election where Democrats and Independents are also going to show up and vote.

It is true, a lot can happen but the way the some members of the GOP has behaved these last three years can’t
be wiped out. You know they are beginning to freak out when Boehner starts trying to get the baggers in the house to settle down and try not to be so openly insane. One of the things going against these Hoekstra is he truly thinks he is in the mainstream.

Lately, it’s been horrifying that I live in Arizona and hail from Michigan. I’m thrilled to have some good news come out of one of those places. I can’t imagine Michigan being ungrateful for the turnaround of the auto industry there. Jobs going to China? That was under the last administration!

they still are. Obams 300 million new jobs created went to foreigners as evidenced by his issuance of 300 million new work permits for foreigners to take unemployed workers jobs

I can’t open the video, but have searched out its contents.
Did you know they actually make F-sticks? I always thought that was just an insult, but you can get real ones from Vermont Country Store. I recommend that one be mailed to every politician who makes raciat/xenophobic appeals…kind of like the old Rowan & Martin Fickle Finger of Fate award.

She doesn’t look Chinese to me. Thai or Vietnamese. But it was kind of stupid to throw that in the faces of Americans when the republicans were the ones that pushed corps leaving the US. First for Mexico then China. Our dear leader herr fuehrer George “Dick Cheney” Bush even sent out satellite making to Brazil for the chinese to get at all our secrets.
Good man there Hoekstra you porker

I am not a racist! Liberals always throw out the “racist” label without even knowing any background details. So typical!
I already said I have one Asian friend. Further, in a kitchen drawer, I have two take-out menus from Korean restaurants, three from Chinese places and even one Mediterranean joint. And if that doesn’t prove it, I’ve trained myself to be able to eat at least two-three pieces of raw fish at those Jap places.
You libetards are so quick to judge! Why don’t you digest all the info I just gave you and then rethink your own prejudices against me!

ok great, you like asian food, and you have one asian friend. and you are saying you are not racist. okayyyy… but i disagree with you when you say the ad is not racist. think outside the box – have you ever considered what ASIAN AMERICANS themselves think of that ad? if the majority of them are offended by that ad (which we are – you know, the cheeesy sterotypical chinese gong, the asian girl speaking in broken english and gleefully talking about how she and her race are stealing american jobs), i think there is validity to the accusations of racism in that ad. this coming from an asian-american doctor who is actually born here in the u.s. and no, i am not a liberal. and no, the majority of us do NOT talk like that “ching chongy” as you say, which is a pretty offensive and backwards thing for you to say, in my opinion. it’s hard to believe you people still exist in this day and age of acceptance of different cultures. i guess we as americans still have a long way to go.

I think y’all need to re-read this individual’s comments. It is too far gone to be real. It is a parody, like Colbert. No one can be that dense for real. The poster just isn’t that good with humor–too juvenile, lacking sophistication, and in need of remedial writing skills.

So I guess all white conservatives talk like Festus from Gunsmoke eh? How does it feel to be racially stereotyped? You are probably too stupid to know what that means. Idiot.

Your schtick ain’t funny, dude. You’re no Colbert, you’re trying way too hard and only succeeding at being offensive. Playing Andrew Dice Clay won’t get you laughs or win you friends. You need to learn how to do comedy a helluvalot better than you’re demonstrating.
Your act is in a hole. Stop digging.
