Horses and Bayonets:The 80 Seconds that Turned the Debate into an Obama Romp
President Obama was on his way to victory in the third debate, but it was the horses and bayonets moment that turned the debate into an Obama blowout.
Here is the video:
ROMNEY: Our Navy is old — excuse me, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We’re now at under 285. We’re headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. That’s unacceptable to me.
I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy. Our Air Force is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947.
We’ve changed for the first time since FDR — since FDR we had the — we’ve always had the strategy of saying we could fight in two conflicts at once. Now we’re changing to one conflict. Look, this, in my view, is the highest responsibility of the President of the United States, which is to maintain the safety of the American people.
And I will not cut our military budget by a trillion dollars, which is a combination of the budget cuts the president has, as well as the sequestration cuts. That, in my view, is making — is making our future less certain and less secure.
OBAMA: Bob, I just need to comment on this.
First of all, the sequester is not something that I’ve proposed. It is something that Congress has proposed. It will not happen.
The budget that we are talking about is not reducing our military spending. It is maintaining it.
But I think Governor Romney maybe hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works.
You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.
And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we’re counting slips. It’s what are our capabilities. And so when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home.
That ladies and gentlemen was the moment that will have people talking tomorrow. One of the signs that Mitt Romney is possibly a losing candidate has been his uncanny ability to be a negative meme generator for his campaign in these debates. Romney has been using that Navy line for months on the campaign trail, and Obama was ready for it.
The line has been nonsense from the very second that Romney first uttered it months ago, and Obama made him look like a fool.
Make no mistake about it, Obama was strong from the very moment that he stepped on the stage. However, the difference between a win and a romp in these debates is moments like horses and bayonets. Romney went from the perception that he was a foreign policy lightweight with voters to actually confirming to voters that he is not ready to be Commander in Chief.
President Obama romped through this debate, but horses and bayonets was a snapshot that will stick voters’ minds. In that one moment, Obama was able to use the personal traits that people already like about him as a weapon that he used to devastate Mitt Romney.
Obama was going to win this debate, but that one moment turned a victory into domination.

Whatever!
Romney has binders full of military experience!
He’s clearly horses and bayonets ahead of Obama when it comes to world domination by the Supreme US Forces.
Once again, Romney scores a knock out punch and clearly sank Obama’s battleship…where you know, Obama’s campaign was hoping to hide some planes full of bad economy.
Also, Romney believes Michigan has trees just the right height.
Romney is the clear winner tonight!!

You should cut poor Conservative Heart a break. I found his remarks highly amusing.
It’s what happens when an apparent conservative finally steps out of the liberal closet. He has to cloak it in sarcasm so his conservative buddies won’t notice.

Size isn’t always an accurate measure of proficiency and competency. Romney’s mistake was in thinking that size matters all of the time (no pun intended.) President Obama has always focused on the smart way to do things–getting more bang for your limited bucks.

I’ve cruised several Romney sites tonight and they are all yelling praise the lord ..Romeny won Obama is evil. Please..do not assume this election is in the bag for the Prez. I’m from Wisconsin..whenever someone gets cocky like that I say two words..and people get very quiet and go..Oh..Yeah.

Well Obama is not going to change RW extremist’s mind, it’s the undecided and Independents we’re going for. The base of both parties have already made up their minds. CBS undecided poll results:
Obama 53%
Romney23%
Tie 24%.
I think any fair minded person would have to agree PO won this debate hands down. Romney could do nothing but agree with PO’s FP because his has been all over the map as PO pointed out so noone really knows where Romney stands on anything. The RW base will still vote for him, they have some serious issiues as we all know.

I remember 2010, when many of the Democrats were so dead sure that we would win.
We got, among other evils, Rick Scott. Only a couple of us (myself included) kept insisting that we must not count our chickens before they’re hatched.
The others did their best to reassure me that we would win. I’m not going to fall for that again… and people should remember that election every time they start thinking “President Obama has it in the bag”.
We also must remember the senate and house races too… it’s NOT all just about President Obama, as important as his win is to this country. Leah Burton has a series going on her blog about the congresscritters who are dominionist/extreme right… and I think everyone who claims that the “Religious Right are dying” or “They’re on the way out” or “They aren’t so prevalent” should go to her blog and read the different posts – she had to break the list up because it’s so big – listing ONLY FEDERAL RACES.
godsownparty.com/blog/
The state-level races are as important, and if you think that things are bad at the federal level… well, some of the people running at the state level make the federal candidates look like pikers. Anyone remember Rhonda Storms? I could easily name a half-dozen such examples.

Conservative Heart said: “Romney scores a knock out punch and clearly sank Obama’s battleship…”
You stole that line from John Kerry on Twitter: twitter.com/JohnKerry
“I think POTUS just sank Romney’s battleship”
Anybody who watched the debate saw Romney playing defense. Foreign Policy isn’t his strong point. To say he scored a knockout punch just makes you look foolish.

To listen to some of the GOP pundits and their support of Romney, believing he accomplished what was necessary tonight and therefore see the debate as a win — tells you how low the bar they set for Romney — it’s the equivalent low bar as Palin had. As long as they showed up and were breathing, they won.
Since when do you win a debate if the majority of it you sit there and verbalize or agree on the same positions as the opponent (the President).

off subject but important
TAX & SPEND
SPEND & BORROW
Two entirely different fiscal ideologies
1945-1980 we taxed wealth to pay down wwii debt
1980-2009 we cut taxes and went on borrow binge that
allowed wealth to pay less in taxes
Reagan cut top rate 60% and increased spending
by 80% and debt by 189%
Bush cut taxes and increased spending by 90% and debt by 112%
or “doubled” after 225 years.
Tax & Spend=Pay Your Way
Spend & Borrow=kids pay tomorrow

I hear you Clarence and I wish Obama and the Dem lawmakers would make that distinction very clear to the voters. Dems tax and spend, Rep. borrow and spend. Smart money is on tax and spend while saving millions in interests the country would have to pay on said loan.

Funny, isn’t it, how Republicans try to spend the money first and then borrow it later… and when Democrats come with an idea that will help the ordinary people instead of the rich – the first thing that comes out of those b*st*rds’ mouths is “How are we going to pay for it???”.

I hear Fox News did a fact check right after the debate claiming that the military still uses bayonets, and therefore Obama lied. Talk about missing the point…

Yeah, really — whatever happened to “American exceptionalism” and “we’re specifically ordained to spread liberty throughout the world?”

Conservative Heart has his head in a DARK PLACE!!!
The fact that our military still uses bayonets does not make what Obama said a lie. He only said we have FEWER horses and bayonets!! I also loved the comment about aircraft carriers and submarines!! I cannot understand anyone who would vote for Romney and Ryan. Too many LIES from both of then!!!
Re-Elect Obama-Biden!!!
