House Republican and OBGYN Says Akin Was Partly Right About Legitimate Rape
A pro-fetus House Republican from Georgia defended legitimate rape Todd Akin of Missouri and the gift of rape Richard Mourdock of Indiana.
U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) said, “(I)n a situation of rape, of a legitimate rape, a woman’s body has a way of shutting down so the pregnancy would not occur. He’s partly right on that.” He further explained, “I don’t find anything so horrible about that” when explaining Akin’s comments about legitimate rape.
Gingrey, an OB/GYN (yes, really), prefaced his explanation of Akin and Mourdoch’s comments by saying that he has “very strong feelings” on this topic (as if women don’t) because he is Catholic and believes life starts at conception. (I can trump that, sir — since women are the only people who can get pregnant from being raped, we tend to have stronger feelings on the matter than you do. Trust me.)
The MDJonline reported on Gingrey’s comments yesterday to members of the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce:
“Part of the reason the Dems still control the Senate is because of comments made in Missouri by Todd Akin and Indiana by Mourdock were considered a little bit over the top. Mourdock basically said ‘Look, if there is conception in the aftermath of a rape, that’s still a child, and it’s a child of God, essentially.’ Now, in Indiana, that cost him the election.
And in Missouri, Todd Akin … was asked by a local news source about rape and he said, ‘Look, in a legitimate rape situation’ — and what he meant by legitimate rape was just look, someone can say I was raped: a scared-to-death 15-year-old that becomes impregnated by her boyfriend and then has to tell her parents, that’s pretty tough and might on some occasion say, ‘Hey, I was raped.’ That’s what he meant when he said legitimate rape versus non-legitimate rape. I don’t find anything so horrible about that. But then he went on and said that in a situation of rape, of a legitimate rape, a woman’s body has a way of shutting down so the pregnancy would not occur. He’s partly right on that.
I’m an OB/GYN doctor. I’ve been an OB/GYN doctor for a long time, since 1975. And I’ve delivered lots of babies, and I know about these things. It is true. We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ‘Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.’ So he was partially right wasn’t he? But the fact that a woman may have already ovulated 12 hours before she is raped, you’re not going to prevent a pregnancy there by a woman’s body shutting anything down because the horse has already left the barn, so to speak. And yet the media took that and tore it apart.”
Listen here.
So, yes ladies, according to yet another Republican, many of you lie about rape so Todd Akin was right about “legitimate rape” existing (statistically, most rapes go unreported, so this meme is what we refer to as rape enabling).
More of OB/GYN Gingrey’s Akin/Mourdock beliefs which he covered in “pro-life” (pro-fetus, anti-woman and anti-born child) stardust and blamed the media for tearing apart:
Fifteen year old girls lie about being raped in order to avoid their parents’ anger after they get pregnant, thus Akin was right. Check.
Conception from rape is still a gift from God – how do you know? Because a male Republican told you so. Check.
Relaxed women get pregnant easier according to this “expert”. Gingrey bases this on his condescending suggestion that women should “just relax” and drink some wine if they want to conceive (it’s like science doesn’t exist for these guys). So yes, you can shut that rape down — unless you have already ovulated and the “horse has left the barn” (points for additional Republican references to barn yard animals when discussing female biology). To those women who got pregnant from rape and had not ovulated 12 hours in advance, you had a choice and you chose to get pregnant from that rapist. Shut it down, girls! Check.
Republicans are still crazy, and this OB/GYN “expert” is in the House voting on laws that impact girls and women in this country. “Dr.” Gingrey is a member of the Tea Party caucus where Todd Akin used to reside. Still wondering why this House hasn’t reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act?

I’m sorry, but saying that someone needs to be raped, no matter how heinous their beliefs or comments, only perpetuates a culture where rape is acceptable. Violence is not going to solve violence. Violent words and thoughts are not going to solve violent words and thought.
No one, anywhere, needs to get raped.

It’s almost like they will do anything in their power to empower rapists and their control over women’s bodies and sexuality. The absurdity and obscenity of what we’re witnessing from the GOP beggars belief.

I’ve skipped periods from stress myself, so isn’t it also possible to stop ovulation?
Obviously statistics show pregnancy is more likely from rape vs. consensual sex (although part of me wonders if in this blame the victim culture we have that it’s just that women are more likely to report the rape if they get pregnant…).
It’s a fascinating conundrum for me.

Not really. I am not a doctor but I play one on TV. There is stress which builds and builds and effects your hormones(long term), then there is rape that is stress all in a matter of minutes(short term).
I think the long term stress could stop ovulation, but not the short term

“I’ve skipped periods from stress myself, so isn’t it also possible to stop ovulation?”
Ummm – NO! And you are only guessing that your skipped periods were caused by stress. Did you willfully stop ovulation yourself? Periods can be skipped for many medical reasons other than stress. Been there. done that.
I suffered from debilitating 4 day migraines in my child bearing days. Dr’s couldn’t find a cause or medication that worked, so they put them down to “stress” too. Of course the fact that they had nothing to do at all with stress, but hormonal conditions, later discovered, didn’t deter them at all from their stress diagnoses. Much easier to pat the “little lady” on the head & say “just relax, you’ll be fine.”

So I bet he taught his sons to only rape girls who were having their periods, huh? Except that a woman can get pregnant at any time during their cycles…where did this nutjob get his medical degree? At Liberty U along with Bachmann’s phony law degree?

The physician, Phil Gingrey (R-GA), fails to mention: “Sperm ejaculated into a woman’s vagina can live in a woman’s cervical mucus or upper genital tract for three to five days.” Mayo Clinic
So remember gals, if you are raped, be sure to remain “so tense and uptight” as be adrenalined up enough to prevent ovulation for a period of 5 days. (snark)
Fecking ignorant wankers, i.e., Phil Gingrey (R-GA), get OUT of government.

Where in God’s name do all these nut jobs come from? I am a rape survivor and and it would be interesting to hear these “MEN” tell their story and thoughts if they were ever raped. They need some serious counseling and only be allowed to broach this subject with their therapist. They don’t have a clue what it’s like or the life-long after-effects of such an encounter. I pray it’s true that God protects children and fools. These “GUYS” need all the help they can get.

But, wait! There’s more!
And Gingrey is a doctor—an OB/GYN, no less—and co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus.

Then how do raped women get pregnant? Is there a bypass? a shunt valve? God forgot to shut it down and said whoops? Does the woman have to squeeze down real hard as she is being raped?
And finally, catholicism is a cult. Period

Bird-brains of a feather …
Perhaps this explains why Congressional Republicans are so opposed to providing federal funding for domestic violence, abortion, and rape kit programs.
In lieu of these forms of assistance to women in need, just supply them with Bibles. After all, whatever happens is simply “God’s will”.

Whats really sad is republican women have the ability to just tune this nonsense off!!! anyone justifying rape is beyond hopeless!! I feel sad for republican women because when a human being self esteem drops this low psychiatric treatment (consulting) is crucial! but some blacks and gays that vote republican fall in the same category.

There is something seriously wrong with these Republican men, as well as the women who enable them with their support and/or patronage. They seem incapable of learning anything from their defeats last November, and it’s beyond me why anyone would attempt even a partial explanation of Todd Akin’s dangerously ignorant statements about rape. All this fool has done is make matters even worse, and no woman in her right mind should even think about letting him anywhere near her private parts.

Dr. Mourdock is a qualified man of science and if his god says that women can physically discharge a bad man’s sperm then Dr. Mourdock should lose his license to practice medicine except on himself. But instead he becomes a politician.
