The Real Reason the Sequester Will Hit is that Some House Republicans Want It
I know it seems like Republicans think sequestration will be a bad thing, otherwise why are they blaming President Obama for it…
But in the lead up to its reality, there are way more Republicans than just Paul Ryan cheering it on. They can’t wait for sequester! They want it so badly they can taste it. They don’t care that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office warn it could push our economy back into recession.
Here’s a round up of quotes from the DCCC, which will give you a good sense of the real reason Speaker John Boehner is not proposing a sequester replacement bill (hint: he doesn’t have the votes):
Republican Congressman Paul Broun (R-GA). “I want to see it go into place.” [Cherokee Tribune, 2/9]
Republican Congressman Mike Coffman (R-CO). “I don’t think going over the fiscal cliff would have been a huge deal” [kdvr.com, 1/02/13]
Former NRCC Chairman Tom Cole. “We just had additional revenue for the federal government, so I don’t see any way in the world the sequester won’t happen either as written or renegotiated or reallocated cuts.” [Talking Points Memo, 2/05/13]
Republican Congressman Scott DesJarlais (R-TN). “Sequestration needs to happen…Bottom line, it needs to happen and that’s the deal we struck to raise the debt limit.” [Cleveland Daily Banner, 2/1]
Republican Congressman John Fleming (R-LA). “The sequester is law. Those cuts happen no matter what. We’re willing to hang in there and insist that those cuts go into place…” [NHPR, 1/30/13]
Republican Congressman James Lankford (R-OK). “greater chance that they’ll be implemented than not at this point.” [Politico, 2/13/13]
Republican Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis (R-WY. “Sequestration will take place…I am excited. It will be the first time since I’ve been in Congress that we really have significant cuts.” [Billings Gazette, 2/11]
Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). “Some conservatives are starting to say despite the fact there are a lot of defense cuts in there, this may be the only way we get real spending cuts over the next year”. [Yahoo News, 2/13/13]
Republican Congressman Mick Mulvaney (R-SC). “We want to keep the sequester in place and take the cuts we can get.” [Dow Jones Business News, 2/8]
Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-KS). “It’s going to be a homerun…I am very optimistic that on March 2nd, we’ll all wake up and America will have tremendous respect for what its House of Representatives led and what it’s federal government was able to accomplish.” [Politico, 2/13]
Republican Budget Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI). “the sequester is going to happen.” [The Hill, 1/27/13]
Republican Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA). “The consensus is we want the sequester numbers to come in and to finally see spending reduced in Washington.” [Dow Jones Business News, 2/8]
Republican Congressman Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA). “We’re willing to let it go through till they (Democrats) respond to us.” [McClatchy, 2/6]
POLITICO (2/13/13): “Top congressional Republicans predicted Wednesday that the sequester will hit at the end of the month – the latest chapter in the series of budget battles that have stymied Washington in the last few years.” [Politico, 2/13/13]
While some Republicans, including Paul Ryan, are now pretending that the sequester is Obama’s idea and it’s a horrible idea (redundant), sequestration is in principle a Republican idea. It’s been championed by Republicans like Paul Ryan and Jack Kingston, who have tried to get it into law year repeatedly to no avail.
All it took for Republicans to get their beloved sequester was holding the economy hostage over the debt ceiling. You’d think they would be happy now that they’re finally going to get it. The tea caucus is high on it, because they can’t see what even Paul Ryan knows now. The sequester is sure doom for the Republican Party.
Republicans own it and it’s not going to be pretty. If the sequester hits, it will be because certain House Republicans wanted it. They think it’s going to be great. So while Republicans try to blame the Democrats, the real truth is certain House Republicans have been pushing for sequester. If it hits, it’s on them.

Odd. Before I saw your comment, I was thinking hot tar would be cruel, but cold crankcase oil and some busted feather pillows would do nicely.

Instead of cold crankcase oil I’d suggest a barrel of oil sludge direct from the Athabaska Tar Sands environmental abomination in Alberta.

Make sure that it’s heated. These R’thugs will do anything to destroy the Country. Do they think all Americans are so stupid that they will buy into their lies? I hope the Dems take this around the Country, explaining the R’thugs plan to take down America. It’s time the business community started speaking out against the R’thugs’ plan which will damage their business’ also.

The GOP stopped caring about ordinary Americans a long time ago. The economy tanks, ordinary Americans feel the pain, the GOP sits by and lets it happen. Maybe they sit there and laugh, too, thinking this will hurt President Obama. In truth, that’s all they care about – hurting the President. They worked to make him a one term President and when that didn’t work out for them, they’re still trying to undermine him – but in doing so, they undermine us. And they don’t care.
Not only that, but they’ve convinced the people who vote for them that this is a good thing! They’ve convinced them that Pres. Obama is evil incarnate and that the budget cuts will be a good thing for the country overall, that this is what needs to happen and that it will even help them. How these people do not see what the GOP is actually doing to them is mind boggling. THEY are the ones who will be hurt. The people in red states that get the most in welfare-type benefits – they will be hurt by this. Come 2014 though, they’ll step in the voting booth and vote for the man or woman with the “R” beside their name and not even give it a second thought.
Democrats must come out in force in 2014. We cannot stay home and just let things take care of themselves because when we do that, we end up with a Congress led by a bunch of people who do not care about us. We need to stop this.

Surprised I don’t see a ‘tax reform is needed now” quote from MY lifeterm Rep. Dave Camp. He has been head of Ways and Means going on three years, and golly gee, still no tax reform from him (oh, he says he has a plan, just like Ryan’s blank budget notebook.) Why oh why are we letting these morons ruin a once-great country?

I don’t care whose fault this sequester was. I only know one thing. It’s going to affect the people. In the GOP is going to take the hit for it. it never affects the people who are in power and who are making decisions. The sequester deal should’ve been healthcare and other perks be taken away from all congressmen until a deal was struck. From now on if there is any way to avoid the people taking the hit, the people in power need to feel the pain.
and the GOP is going to brag about it in 2014, forgetting once again, that the people took the hit for it. some of the tea party thugs may be able to get away with it, but not all of them.
The Democrats will not get the house back because it’s too big to do in one go, but I believe they’re going to heavily cut into the majority that is there now.

Of course the sequester is the Republicans’ baby. When it passed, Boehner said he got 98% of what he wanted.

It worth reading the whole No More Mister Nice Blog essay this morning on exactly this topic, but here’s a taste:
You just wait: Rand Paul and a tiny handful of other Paulite Republicans may sincerely want to cut the defense budget and reduce U.S. military commitments, but the rest of these guys want the cuts to take effect on a Democratic president’s watch because they want to blame a Democrat for them. The only real difference between these guys and the old-school hawks is that the old-school hawks think you attack Democrats as peaceniks by demanding maximal militarism at all times, while the new crowd is sacrificing a pawn, on the assumption that anything Republicans force into the budget while a Democrat is in the Oval Office will be blamed on the Democrat. It’s a difference of tactics.
So don’t get too excited about this being a dink for the GOP. They’ll blame Democrats no matter what.

In this farce this right here sounds like a benny hill skit
GOP chiefs of staff pressed high-ranking leadership aides for more information about the cuts at a recent meeting, according to several sources familiar with the meeting. “People asked, ‘what do you suggest?’” one source said of the dissuasion.
“There’s members that have been here 10 to 20 terms and you’ve got senior staff that are making a certain amount of money, you can’t very well tell them that they all have to take pay cuts … if you are locked into a lease, you can’t renegotiate that lease so what are people supposed to do? And nobody has the right answer for that,” one source told The Hill.

Damn straight we want these cuts. No more taxes and no more spending. Bet you people would love it if you were able to raise taxes on other people for your benefit to spend on your budget like Obama but ya can’t and he won’t be able to either again like he was already granted once.

Does anyone get the idea that maybe both parties would like to see the sequester happen so that both can blame the other? If the President was sincere about averting an economic catastrophe, then why has he spent all these days campaigning with the public about how horrible it will be? Instead, he schedules a meeting with House and Seante leaders on Friday, the very day the cuts are set to go into place.
The more I study the whole story, the more convinced what we need is a third party candidate, and soon!
Shame on the whole lot of them. They all put party play ahead of the best interests of the country.

Let the Sequester happen, it was the Whitehouses idea orginally as a threat to get their way. The scare tactics being used again by the Whitehouse is typical of their governing style. They have no ideas, just scare the public. The President does not meet with Congress at all. He is above having to speak to the House about anything, even though per the Constitution spending and funding should be approved through the House and Senate. So if the world does not come to an end with Sequester, then it shows we can cut the budget. This appears to be the only way to do so. I am from Texas and whatever funds we loose from the Government, we will make up with our current growth, and our budge surplus we currently have. I am tired of being threatened by some illusive loss of services, unless the Whitehouse gets whatever they deem appropriate for us all. That is not how to run a country. So now the President will meet with Congress on the last day of the countdown Where has the Whitehouse been for the last 30 days. On the Road Tour scaring the people… after vacation, because we scare so easily. If this is so serious then why would the President not been in negotiations everyday to resolve the issue.

Sorry. Texas lives on Federal money.
The sequester was not put into place for the White House to get their way. It was put in place as a threat to both the Senate and the House to come up with a solution. It did not have to be the White House solution.
You are very wrong about Texas surviving without federal money. You will not make it up with whatever growth you think you’re seeing. Because much of that growth is funded by federal money.
After vacation? That’s hilarious. The president doesn’t have to be in negotiations to resolve the issue, it is between the house and the senate to come up with a plan for the White House to approve.
You’re trying to make this all about the president, and like a true want to be conservative you totally ignore the GOP. The house of representatives and it speaker has stated that they will not vote on any sequester replacement plan. Why shouldn’t the president tell people what’s going to happen if the sequester goes into effect?
