Hypocritical Puritans Attack Beyoncé as Too Sexy for Super Bowl
The puritans are up in arms against Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance, which included a reunion with her 1990s R&B group, Destiny’s Child. It wasn’t “family friendly”. They say their kids can’t watch the Super Bowl anymore if women are going to dress like that and lick their fingers.
I hope these same people don’t take their kids to that bastion of family values, Hooters.
Here’s Beyoncé’s smoking hot performance, in which we are told she sang live (talent is sexy, no?):
It astounds me that anyone living in this culture could be offended by Beyoncé’s performance. Is it offensive that women can’t play football and that they are served up as objects of lust who cheer on the men? Yes, that’s offensive. But that is hardly Beyoncé’s fault. Is football a sport that attracts the sort of male energy that objectifies women? Often, yes. Again, NOT Beyoncé’s fault.
Is it offensive that these same puritans are okay with Smiling Barbie cheerleaders’ costumes but offended by the same coverage when done in leather? It’s okay to show off your breasts and bottom in order to cheer the men on, but if you are fierce and awesome in black leather while showing your tummy and bottom as your own act, you are no longer family friendly.
THIS is okay for our daughters, but Beyoncé (covering MORE, I might add) in black leather is not:
Here’s a woman who won 16 Grammy Awards and yet still acknowledges other women’s talent and beauty instead of demeaning them, and she’s the focus of our prudish rage.
After the performance, the focus of America’s criticism for being too sexy/sexist left an inspiring letter for her fellow female performers, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson. Beyoncé wrote that it was “an honor” to perform with the “phenomenal ladies… You are all beautiful, talented and showed so much class!”
Yes, she licked her finger. Maybe we don’t want our daughters licking their fingers, but the chances of them having an obligation to be hot enough to entertain a nation of primitives with raging testosterone (or so they say) on the BIGGEST DAY OF OUR YEAR (may be the problem) are remote. What is not so remote is that our daughters see much worse every single day.
This is a nation that calls Hooters a family restaurant, so spare me the puritanical outrage over Beyoncé.
Perhaps watching football with your daughter isn’t such a great plan if you don’t want her feeling diminished, since she can’t participate except as on the sidelines or as the object d’lust (not Beyoncé’s fault). Perhaps we should opt out of the entire culture, and blame the hot African American woman who last performed at the Super Bowl for our choice.
That this is a sexist, misogynistic culture is not up for debate among sane people. I don’t blame mothers who don’t like it, but it’s a bit short-sighted to blame Beyoncé for this fact. Is she making money off of her sexuality? Yes. So are the women anchors at Fox News. So are the girls at Hooters. Models. Sarah Palin when she had it. And so many more. Because of our culture, almost all women in media have to sell their sexuality, even if by withholding it (so rare) and creating a more valuable commodity. Some of those people also have talent to back up their sex appeal. Some of them don’t, which should be offensive but somehow we don’t seem to mind a girl selling herself short or bemoan the women with talent who are ignored by our culture because they aren’t “hot”.
This culture is offensive to women and bad for young girls and it’s not fixed by cheering women in the front lines of combat, because even that, while progress, is still an attempt to catch the approval of the American male centric value system in which power is equated with being like a man. When a woman is seen as an equal because of her more feminine traits (not sexual traits; feminine traits, like cooperation – and I note that Beyoncé demonstrated one such feminine trait by praising her female co-performers) we will have advanced into post-knuckle-dragging days.
Beyoncé is actually a strong, talented woman making the most of her short shelf life as an object of desire and using that sexuality to empower herself. In 2010, Knowles was ranked first on Forbes list of the “100 Most Powerful and Influential Musicians in the World”. She designs clothes and markets perfumes because she’s smart enough to know where this is going to land.
Hey, the First Lady enjoyed Beyonce’s performance, as did most of the country. Michelle Obama tweeted, “Watching the #SuperBowl with family & friends. @Beyonce was phenomenal! I am so proud of her!”
Here’s the family friendly argument: Cheerleaders, who make a lot less money, have no power and often wear less, are a great model for their daughters but Beyoncé isn’t. Here’s a hint, puritans of America — if the men aren’t watching the NFL expecting sex, then why do the cheerleaders dress like strippers, albeit American sparkly strippers? Maybe if Beyoncé had put some Sarah Palin sparkly stars on her leather, she wouldn’t have been so darn scary, eh?
Some people seem to have a real problem with a woman being center stage in her own life. Who would you rather your daughter emulate in her career: Beyoncé or a cheerleader?

I agree entirely with calling out the hypocrisy, but I do wish we’d stop trying to pin it on the Puritans. It’s our VICTORIAN legacy that leads to these sorts of things. The Puritans got a bad rap. The witchcraft thing involved entirely different issues of class and reactionary fear against the loss of power to imposed English governors and targeted as many men as women at the end. But between our beliefs about witch hunting as an anti-female issue and Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter that NEVER existed, we think the Puritans were anti-sex.
Nothing could be further from the truth. They had NOTHING against sex per se. I’ve read deeply in colonial law, and the issues always were about producing children outside marriage. Why? Unlike our Teathugs -in those days every single child was ENTITLED to the welfare of the town in which he or she was born for the whole of their lives if they could not be self sufficient. That was a huge burden. Sex? Not an issue.
Premarital sex was not itself condemned at all. Well into the early 19th century, before Victorian capitalism changed it all, being pregnant upon the wedding day was just an issue of amusement – it was known as “sitting down to meat before grace” or starting the meal before the ritual! Abortion until “quickening” was entirely legal and of not much excitement. It wasn’t practiced much because of the risks to the mother – sanitation wasn’t exactly well known – but it also was NOT considered a moral issue. Marriages were not performed in church; they were entirely state affairs, economic contracts, period. Shades of our debate on marriage equality! Any wonder the first churches to accept marriage equality were today’s outgrowth of Puritan Congregational churches?
So it’s the creepy, hypocritical, rule-bound but slavering and obsesed Victorians that gave sex a bad name. The Puritans wouldn’t bother. They liked it! So that’s my only critique. Puritans are getting a bad rap .It’s…

If only Oliver Cromwell had lived a little longer, George Fox might have made him a Friend… and then, the “American Revolution” could have arisen a century sooner and in the motherland.

George would have done the world a major favor. Cromwell laid the ground for possessive individualism by enclosing the Commons. He wasn’t the first or last, but his views were inimical to the existing “moral economy” that was the foundation of most economics at that time. Cromwell was a dreadful man – and not, apparently, well liked by Puritans in the new settlements. They liked the OLD way. Not his way.
Converting Cromwell? Would have been GREAT indeed. Quakers were even MORE kindhearted about sex than the New England Puritans!

Beyonce is an entertainer, and entertainers typically wear costumes during performances. I know engineers who have worked with her, and in the studio, she’s demure, professional, and extremely talented, and that’s the real deal; a talented, strong Black woman frightens them.

These are the same hypocrites who watch ‘tots and tiaras’, not sure of the name of that awful show but you get my meaning. Beyonce is an adult female who has control of her life, these little girls are paraded around looking like whores and worse yet these people seem to have no problem with that show.

I didn’t see a damned thing wrong w/her performance. It was enjoyable watching and listening to a beautiful, talented, healthy-looking performer, and she was dressed appropriately as an entertainer. Saw nothing wrong, but then, I wasn’t looking for anything to gripe about. There’s even a rumor that by making a “triangle” w/her fingers, she’s Illuminati. Cheeezus.

LOL!!! I think Beyonce is lovely, smart, but probably waaaay too young to have a CLUE who the “Illuminati” were.
How amazing. Some people can find reasons to crawl into foxholes just about anywhere. Thank you, Older_Wiser – that made my day.

My sister called after Beyonce’s performance began. My sister was irate about the highly sexualized performance and the “slutty” costumes. She ranted about society influences like fathers probably drooling over Beyonce. Her point was how do we get through to teens that dressing hypersexually and acting out sending lewd or nude photos via texts is unacceptable when during a football game the tradition features come hither dressed for BDSM?
My daughter is a performer so I understand the costuming for effect.
To your point, Sarah, about Palin, Palin used sex for lack of intelligence. Sad to witness our culture is dominated still by giving in sexuality for success.
I bet the half time show would have been better if the dominatrix had been left out. Beyonce is great and talented.

But she didn’t consider Ann Romney’s perforated black leather above-the-knobby-knees dress slutty, I suppose, and totally inappropriate for a 60-something woman who couldn’t carry it off?
Actually, it never occurrred to me that Beyonce was signalling BDMS, either. I mean there was no whip, chains or mask, no stiletto atop a naked male butt.

Can We Say Selfish! Too Sexy 4 TV, YES! Beyonce, okay, yes, she’s beautiful, fine body, rich, married, and she can sing. However, she is not a good role model for Blue Ivy Carter (daughter), or any young girl. Why? Beyonce’s show is filled with seduction as she act as a succubus sexually subduing her audiences, as she lick her finger suggesting oral sex, opening her legs wide, & then placing her mic next to her v*gina. Ending her sect with the Roc-a-fella hand sign, an open v*gina, and the mic the pen*s entering the v*gina. Beyonce loves the center of attendant, misleading people, sex, money, and power. Really, I feel sorry for her because she has no one around her that care to say, Beyonce, you do not have to do these things, just sing & dance without becoming an over sex robot. Beyonce, you are causing young girls to dance opening their legs, which, in turn, could cause them to get raped.

This from someone who is so sexually repressed they cannot even spell VAGINA without showing how big of an ASS-terisk they are. Besides it seems you watched the entire performance without being struck down by lightening. Get over it, you could have changed the channel.

I did not like what Beyonce wore or how she danced at the Super Bowl half time. In addition, I don’t like the skimpy clothes some of the cheerleaders wear. Women are degraded by these actions.

Somewhere on your TV there are mechanisms to change the channel or turn it off completely. Feel free to use them at your discretion.

I didn’t think it degraded women, they looked pretty healthy to me.You know what degrades women?Treating them as baby making automatons who have no choice ,discriminatory pay and a barbie fantasy that is unhealthy.

The whole argument is stupid. This is the 21st century, not the 18th or Islamic rule. Women can wear what they want. I have seen less clothes on women everywhere, including the beaches, where alot wear thongs, So whats so different? I doubt to many men were compalining about her outfit, its only their wives.

Since I’m one of the people you linked to and your so upset about, I’d like to point out a few things.
First, I never said that Beyonce didn’t do a phenomenal job. In fact, I said the opposite. I said she was great. I just said that the Superbowl as a whole, with the GoDaddy commercials, stripper pole TV show plugs, and yes, Beyonce’s rather suggestive choreography, was not appropriate from my 5-year-old daughter. I didn’t say that any of those things should be censored. I said that I didn’t want my daughter watching the Superbowl for a few years.
Secondly, since you continue to insinuate that I would take my child to Hooters, a quick search of the same website you linked to would show that I’ve written about so-called “breastaurants.” And why I would never take my children to them. Ever.
Also, I mention in the piece you linked to that I don’t think the cheerleaders uniforms are all that appropriate either.
You liked Beyonce’s performance. Good. I’m happy for you. But please do not misrepresent my point of view so that you can get hostile and combative with something just for the sake of being indignant.

We definitely live in a highly sexualized society. That said, some of the very people who have issues with Beyonce are the ones who are obsessed with womens’ sex lives snd with doing all they can to govern those sex lives by limiting or denying access even to birth control and imposing intrusive measures such as transvaginal probes. What’s more, a lot of the politicians on the right who preach prudery get caught in sexually compromising situations, which makes their fake outrage laughable.
