If Americans Really Paid Attention, Republicans Would Never Win Elections
The goal of Americans For Prosperity, Americans For Tax Reform and other conservative groups is to defund the left. This isn’t some liberal left leaning opinion. This is a fact put out by the conservatives themselves.
Grover Norquist, who is the unelected head of the Republican Party and the head of Americans For Tax Reform (No Tax Pledge) said, “We will hunt [these liberal groups] down one by one and extinguish their funding sources.” This brings me to my point regarding the recent attacks on teachers, firefighter and police officers.
Unions have long been the funding source of the Democratic Party, so it should be of no surprise that once the private sector unions have been all but eliminated, the public sector was next.
This isn’t about government fiscal responsibility! It’s about political power. Once unions in both the private sector and the public sector have been eliminated, the Democratic Party will be at an enormous financial disadvantage or they will have to cater to Wall Street and Corporate America even more than they do now, leaving NOBODY to speak on behalf of working Americans and small community, family businesses.
ACORN was another liberal group the GOP attacked. It was accused of voter fraud even though the Government Accountability Office found very little evidence to back the right wing claim of voter fraud. So what happened, the Republican Party defunded it anyway, taking away a path for the poor to be engaged in the political process.
Paul Weyrich, the founder of the Heritage Foundation said so steadfastly and with conviction that “our leverage in the election quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.” This leads into to my other point about voter ID laws and how they make it harder to become participants in the electoral process and the REAL REASON to get rid of ACORN.
On an economic note, I have pointed out in another article that the Republican Party lied about taxes and have tricked the American people to support reducing corporate tax and “starving the beast.” The beasts are the programs that help people. Even though most of our manufacturing went to the HIGH TAXED country of China, the GOP still lies about corporate taxes being the reason for the United States losing its manufacturing base.
This has created the REAL funding issue with Social Security and Medicare which is funded through wages. If outsourcing never occurred and good paying jobs were plentiful, Social Security and Medicare would be running surpluses.
The GOP doesn’t defend the average person, they defend the “corporate person.” Much like Mitt Romney stated in Iowa.
Corporate America doesn’t care about the little people, and they don’t care about American small businesses. All they care about is the consolidation of power and aggregated capital and buying out their competitors. Their front group is the GOP, but the Democratic Party is being led to the right also.
Until the American people rise up against this oligarchy created out of lies, we do not have a chance to strengthen the American middle class that has come out of the liberal movement of the 1950s and 60s. What Americans have forgotten is the meaning of shared prosperity!
The essence of the middle class has evaporated when such a large portion of economic growth stays within the top ONE PERCENT of earners.
America needs shared prosperity! When the economy is growing and GDP is rising, American workers, who helped create the wealth need to share in the fruits of their labor.
If Americans really knew that the GOP have been lying through their teeth, the Republican Party would either fade off into history or have to come to the center, which is where they were during Eisenhower and Goldwater.

The parvicidal cast of the Right Wing that controls the current Republican Party has long been clear to me: it is Hell- bent on controlling, oppressing, and extinguishing “the little people” just for being “little”. I have been told I was paranoid, yet both such authors as William Shirer, Flo Conway, John Dean, and Naomi Klein, and the course of events of this century, have convinced me I am not. I am still left with “why?…”

Of course if Americans really paid attention, Republicans never would win elections. Voters need to be as actively involved and paying attention to as much as they can to politicians’ voting records if they’re available, their backgrounds, their previous jobs & job performance, and yes their personal lives too and evaluate their public policy decsisions. Witty or sharp campaign slogans and/or commercial ads alone should not be the deciding factor for voters.
Why else do you think Republican politicians distract everyone with their divisive junk?

I agree, americans should be voting on policy as opposed to catchy slogans. How about a solution to this?
We could make sure voters know at least something about a candidate’s proposed policies in order to vote for said candidate. That way we know people aren’t voting based on appearance or catchy slogans.
I don’t care whether you vote D or R or (like me) a little of both—I have the most respect for voters who know their candidates. I tend to vote fiscally conservative and socially liberal, so I have to search for candidates that match my own policy beliefs. It is not that hard.

This is precisely what is going on. The conservatives are waging a relentless war on any type of organizing that the people are trying to do to further dominate the levers of power for their corporate masters. They already have the Supreme and Federal Court(s) firmly within their grasp (giving us all sorts of wingnut activism on the bench), have the US House, and have manage to neutralize any real-journalism from the corporate MainStream Media that might actually inform folks about the raping and pillaging that is really going on by the top 0.1%.
If democracy is to wrest control from the “highest-bidder” mentality that has hijacked it for the rich and corporations, EVERY citizen has to make it his or her responsibility to take action here. Occupy Wall Street. Occupy Washington D.C in October. Get mad and get out there. Fight back while you still can.

So very true :( What I find around here are people voting Republican because they think they stand for wealth and power. Why wouldn’t I vote for that? Sadly, that is where their involvement ends with our political system. They then refuse to talk about anything politics with the excuse that it’s inappropriate – where really they just don’t want to get caught not having any sort of knowledge about current events and the like. Well that and all they do know is from Fox News :P
My in-laws are very … uh … “active” Christians. While myself was brought up Catholic, I’ve learned to embrace and accept all forms of religious beliefs. They on the other hand pray for me since according to them, I’m going to hell because I don’t worship like them. Anyway – the conservatives know their target audiences. All they have to drop are the words gays (their words not mine) and abortion with a hint of gun control and they have them hooked for life. What’s frustrating is that the Republicans have shown that they can influence and make stupid changes and get away with it. Why haven’t they taken care of these major issues of theirs? What I try to explain to these people is that they choose not to because they want their followers to believe that their party is fighting the righteous fight, where really it’s just another card in their deck that they’ll never get rid of.
America is THE melting pot of the world. If they want to secularize (is that the right word? hehe) a country, they should go find or start their own. America was never meant to be from the beginning of it’s formation.

good article, except goldwater was definitely far to the right. ike was a follower even though a republican of keynesian economics. both men were honorable which none of the current republican presidential candidates are. the danger though is even greater than mr medeiros states in that the republican party only supports wallstreet & the pentagon. the problem with wallstreet is it represents only global capital. so you can have foreign governments like china, saudia arabia & israel with far more influence on american policy than 90% of american voters have. romney is extremely dangerous when he states corporations are people. he follows the same reasoning as the supreme court decision. as dylan & hendrix ( i like jimi’s version better) said, “the hour’s getting late”.

Obviously, you believe they actually count the ballots. How can we respect the opinion of someone so damnably naive. The only reason to believe the election results have anything to do with the ballots is that the government is just as fucked up as the society.
Really, the elections are rigged, get over it. Any game that can be rigged has always been rigged.

If American’s really paid attention there would be no Democrats or Republicans. The Left is as bad as the Right. One hand washes the other in today’s politics. Liberals trying to paint a picture that there is hope in on their side of the fence are just as diluted as The Teabaggers. Put your bong away, shred your EBT card and wake up.
Try and argue any direction you’d like. The Left is just as bad. They just refuse to acknowledge it, or try and spin it as it being for the greater good of our nations future. Spare me the bullshit.

I couldn’t agree more. If I had it my way, we would ditch the party affiliations, and just have candidates who make their policy believes, backgrounds, and records well known, and we vote on that.
When an NFL team is looking for a new head coach, they don’t characterize through two parties. They choose based on his proposed policies and plans. They hire that way because it is what is best for the group—filter through the bullsh*t labels and get to know the person as an individual.
With the party affiliation, we get caught up in finger pointing, and worse, political point-scoring. Dems will block repub bills just to prevent repubs from scoring, and repubs will do the same right back. That gets us nowhere. (Our media outlets aren’t helping by perpetuating this team-style political atmosphere.)

Same could be true of the Democrats. However the thing is that all of them lie and cheat to get elected.
And all of them do NOT represent the citizens of their communities, They represent the party that they belong too. Truly representing of the constituents does not happen in Washington or any capitol city of the USA… The misspoken politician is the rage of this country, and possibly the problem with elected officials in all areas. They need to understand that most people are are not stupid and need to be lead by the hand and told what to do. The arrogance of our elected officials is unsurpassed in history, Their ego’s cannot be denied. to get the representation that we (as Citizens) deserve the party affiliation should be left at the door of chambers and the peoples voice should be heard and voted on as such.

He’s the only politician in this country from any party who doesn’t lie, doesn’t spout off generic talking points and worthless rhetoric, and supports all of his arguments with solid logic and factual evidence. Even when I disagree with him, I can understand his views and why they make sense, and I’m willing to sacrifice those issues where I think he’s wrong just to have him in office.
