Immigration reform requires Republican reform
more from Black Liberal Boomer
Bitter old white male that he is, even Sen. John McCain knows immigration reform is not an option. You can either try and grow more fingers to plug up the cracks in the dike or you can learn how to swim.
Once again the Republicans are being forced to take a look in the mirror provided by attendance records at their 2012 Republican National Convention (and 2008, and 2004, and 2000, and…), where the only way the cameras could make it look like there were more than a handful of non-white people in the audience was to keep showing the same meager handful of darker skinned folks over and over and over again. Some not-quite-so-bright Republicans feel the best way to attack this issue is to just keep on gerrymandering. Just keep carvin up those districts. No doubt it is that same dim bulb crowd who thinks it’s a smart idea to try and change the rules of the Electoral College so maybe they don’t get beat up so bad in 2016. Voter suppression didn’t quite yield the desired result in 2012 so let’s just try another form of suppression and see how that turns out, right guys?
Those who are slightly more enlightened and whose political IQ at least reaches the three-digit range have come to understand that America does not look like the Republican Party. At all. And so if Republicans want to continue to lead a national political party that has a shot at remaining relevant for the next generation – hell, for this generation - then it kinda makes sense to begin addressing issues that matter to these folks. And by ‘these folks’ I mean Americans. Denial is not a viable forward-looking strategy. And it’s better to be a little late to the party than to miss it altogether – or to be celebrating in the wrong house down the street.

Unfortunately I think the republicans will turn the mirror around for us and all we will see is smoke and tokenism. As long as we have the old guard in the GOP I dont think we will see real change.
I can define that by saying I don’t think that we will see real honest change that wont have some type of knife in their hand aimed at someone’s back.
The GOP is going to have to come around to the fact that this is no longer the white picket fence, shotguns in the closet, Pleasant Valley Sunday every day strictly controlled society. On the other hand the Democrats are going to have to understand that we have laws that say people will not enter this country illegally and that this must be stopped. As much as I do not like supporting wars with my tax money, I do not like supporting people who come here illegally and force us to pay for their needs
But we all have to just let go and face the future. In the future is that someday there will be no borders.

I have always been pro immigration.First my mother’s side of the family is from Belize who came here during the 60′s for a better way of life.Second throughout human history people has always moved to other areas to provide for their families,Third and lets be real we need them. You think when we go the store and they have 3 green peppers for a dollar you get that price because the workers get paid union wages.Ask Georgia farmers what happens when you don’t have workers to pick produce
Georgia Farmers Face Another Worker Shortage Because Of Harmful Immigration Law

Third I think the focus on immigration is racists. You don’t see anyone up in arms about Europeans that are here illegally.
This is not a repub or dem issue on who can be tougher on immigration.IMO its a issue about how we as a society value work, living wages and at what price are we willing to change our way of life. You want cheap products then you need cheap labor

My opinions on immigration are not really popular here :).
I believe in immigration. I do not believe in illegal immigration. I believe in the workers in foreign countries being paid what they are worth. But I do not believe in people sneaking in the back door and getting away with it. I don’t have a problem with immigrants who were brought here as kids with no control over their lives. If you cannot come here legally, you shouldn’t be here.
I also believe that the United States should have a work program that is viable and allows people from other countries to come here and work on a as needed basis. But the people who bring them in have to be responsible for seeing to it that they leave when their time is up. They also have to see to it that those people are not abused financially as they are now.
If illegal immigrant get away with coming here illegally then I do not think that any misdemeanor in United States should be punished.

And this is why this is going to be hard. You and I probably agree on about 80% of the time and the others times the goals may be the same its just how we get there. Now given a choice which way do you think Americans will go Keep the status quo which is demagogue the issue while enjoying the benefits or change the system to treat these people with living wages, path to citizenship and basic human rights?Myself I am very pessimistic about the decency of Americans.I want to be wrong I want to be able to open up the paper and this problem is no longer a problem. But I also see something like a no-brainer like helping the hurricane victims become a political football.
Yesterday I found it kind of amusing that Sen Rubio was ranting about people coming here illegally and his family came here the same way but because they were Cubans they get to stay with no questions ask. When the President said unless you are a Native American we all are immigrants I guess people didnt put it together.I know Rubio didnt and hes helping to write the legislation.SMDH
