Investigate Rick Scott for the Voting Obscenity that is Florida
By: Dennis SNov. 9th, 2012more from Dennis S
As a caring progressive, I just have to wade in with the latest update on the Florida voting fiasco.
Most of the Florida (read Governor Rick Scott) voter repression facts and figures you’re reading about here come from the Miami Herald Online Edition. And they ain’t pretty. In fact they’re disgusting and, as I’ve written earlier, Scott should be held accountable. Let us begin.
The Tuesday vote count won’t be completed until Thursday. When we know the final results is anybody’s guess. Some say Saturday is a good bet. Not only is the count two days late, but that also adds two additional days to figure out how to twist the vote in the Republican’s favor. Am I suggesting that’s a possibility? Does Romney avoid paying taxes? The Miami-Dade County Elections Supervisor, has already admitted that “mistakes have been made in the elections process”, wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
There are 20,000 ballots to be counted representing 100,000 pages that all have to be verified one by one. In some voting venues, ballots were 10 and 12 pages long. These lengthy time-eaters are all highly intentional of course with many measures added simply to guarantee very slow-moving lines. Can anything be harsher to the dedicated and sincere voter than waiting in line as long as EIGHT hours? As in Miami-Dade, the last Monroe County voter cast a ballot at 1 AM as Scott refused to extend voting hours to another day and even cut 2 hours off of Sunday voting even as voters were waiting in line.
The hope of the Republican Party leadership was, of course, that people would see the lines and either tire out and leave or refuse to join the lines in the first place. And I dare say, most of those people were in the targeted minority districts. To a degree, it worked. Michelle Obama was once given right-wing hell for saying in February of 2008 that “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country.” Well, you can give me hell for saying I’m deeply ashamed of certain parts of my country. You’re not Americans. I don’t know what you are, maybe you’ll carry out your threats to move to Canada, but more appropriately, since you’re leaving anyway, I’d start looking at certain totalitarian dictatorships for residence because that’s clearly where you belong.
In the two most recent Florida General Elections, both Scott predecessors, Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist, extended voting hours. 2012 is all on Scott.
Question for you holier than thou, right-wing bible-thumpers. Have you no conscience whatsoever? Is your hatred for a brilliant and accomplished black man so deeply ingrained in your twisted psyches, that you’ll stoop to anything to keep the man out of the White House? Do you think the good lord is looking down on you and pumping a fist of approval? You really couldn’t be any less Christian.
Sorry thumpers, but in votes that have been counted in Miami-Dade, Obama kicks Romney’s ass by about 25 percentage points according to the Herald. President Obama is fond of using the term ‘math’, so let’s do the math. 20,000 absentee ballots remain to be counted. Obama has a 203,947 vote lead as I write this. So Miami-Dade goes to Obama in a big way, even if every last absentee vote goes to the tax-avoider. Statewide, Obama already leads by 46,000 votes so the only thing at stake here is a recount after a certain Obama win. And there are enough Obama-hating election heads and workers to virtually guarantee a recount would be in the offing if the margin calls for it. That is unless Romney did the one honorable thing of a dishonorable campaign and declined to demand it.
Even if Florida manages to massage the numbers for Romney, it’s a moot point. The total number of Electors in the U.S. is 538. That number represents 2 Senators per state plus the sum total of their House of Representative’s members. Florida has 29 Electors. Who cares? Obama already has the 270 required majority in his pocket. He’s going to be a two-term president. Hallelujah!
Once all the votes from all the precincts from all the polling places are counted and booked, here’s something that Florida Democratic leaders should think long and hard about. Read the Fourteenth Amendment. Read Section 2 of XIV that directly applies to the voting obscenity that is Florida. It’s dated, but certainly deserving of a court ruling. If that court hands down the decision I think is most obvious, it could result in the reduction of House members for the state and I think that should happen. The ACLU might also want to mine certain segments of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I say keep the pressure on these vote deniers and attack every repressive Voter ID act in every state that has passed that grotesque legislation.
The Democrats have won the right to get on the offensive. We don’t need to stand by and watch our country disintegrate. But we do have to get up off our couches. Let’s give ourselves a grace period of the rest of the year, then hit the ground-game running. Every Democratic voter, every election. Get ‘em out to vote and if the Voter ID laws stand, break out chairs and food and liquids for those in line. Keep them company if you’ve already voted.

You should start a petition on Care2.com or www.thepetitionsite.com (I think they’re the same people). I would certainly sign it, and would share it on facebook and get hundreds of signatures. This really needs to happen. I’d start it, but I’m not nearly as well written as you are and I think anything I wrote would come off as rude or opinionated and wouldn’t be nearly as effective as what you could write. Just a suggestion

Thank you, Dennis. Sadly, Florida is a disgrace.
You don’t mention this…but I suspect, they planned this fiasco will ahead for FL to be a repeat of 2000…keeping the nation is suspense for a true Election winner and result. Has anyone mentioned this possibility?
Never did they dream that Obama would wipe the floor with Romney in such a dramatic manner…and they’re shocked!
I dream of Alan Grayson eventually becoming your FL Governor!

I feel all Politicians involved in either Obstructionism in the Congress that kept our President for making the progress needed and doing all they could to make him a one term president, should be held accountable for treasonous acts, As for the Governor and State Dept heads that tried to restrict voting via various means.
Many need to be tried for Sedition and Treason, other for Voter Intimidation and Fraud and for flat out interfering with the public’s’ Right to Vote (in a reasonable and timely manor.

By all means, investigate Pink Slip Rick, but remember, he is NOT FLorida. Florida voted FOR the POTUS. Florida or the south district of the state, voted AGAINST Allen West. It’s unfortunate that we have a governor that is a bully and a petty satrap, but he is not Florida. HE is the “Voting Obscenity,” not the state.

Background: I live in “red” Florida county, and if possible, and even redder precinct. Although not physically counted, the ratio of Romney to Obama yard signs must have exceeded 20 to 1 in favor of Romney.
Hypothesis: If there is a Republican voter suppression scheme truly underway, there should be some significant differences in the voting experience itself.
Election Day test of hypothesis: Saw long lines on TV for “blue” leaning precincts. Wife & I walked in to our voting precinct at different times (I voted at lunch-time). I had 4 people in front of me and was casting my ballot within minutes. She didn’t count the people, but was only 20 minutes later than normal getting home. Our polling place closed on time.
Conclusion: There were voter suppression schemes in play during the 2012 Florida election.

This year has been the best for seeing Democrat signs. I saw 5 for President Obama, and 2 for other Democrats. Every day that I drove to school, there were well over a hundred Romney signs on the way, and maybe as many as 200. The lone Obama sign along that route was seen only one day… like usual, I suspect it was destroyed by a “Good Christian”.
The destruction of political signs got so bad that there was an editorial about it. They admitted that over 200 Obama signs in one area had been destroyed, and complained about 20 for Romney in a single housing development (sounds like someone got carried away and forgot the law). Somehow that was supposed to be equal. I rather suspect that it was way more than 200, and that Democrat signs being torn down happened (like past elections) all over the place, vs one small occurrence in one neighborhood.
I haven’t heard of signs being destroyed this year, but I’ve been avoiding the public as much as possible. It’s just too chancy (especially when churches put big signs up after the election” This is STILL “One Nation Under God”!!!
The only good news is that unlike 2008, many of the Romney signs were taken down by the next afternoon. Before, the McCain/PALIN (the usual emphasis) signs stayed up for over a week and sometimes weeks.

I live in Northwest Florida, and it seems we have no problem in getting our ballots counted here. Districts 1 & 2 retained our Rep-reps, and Jeff Miller is a good man that actually does his job, and does it well. He’s just due for retirement. This will be Steve Southerland’s 2nd term, but I choose the write-in for Dis 2, as I did not care for the Dems choice for Dis 2, either. NWFL is pretty red, and we do have two military bases in the area, huge ones.
The consensus in my little town is that Scot has to go, and the FL gubernatorial race can’t come any soon. Charlie Crist is an Indpendent now, but I would love to see him make a run for it again.
Florida is filled with seniors whom volunteer at the polls, but we do need to get more young people in there to speed things up, if we are stuck with this Voter ID sham. Hopefully, it will be gone soon.

Oh, yeah. Scott. He’s after higher education again. Wants to charge more for certain degrees than others.
My first thought when I read that was that he was going to try to price the degrees that questioned and disproved the Republican lies out of the range of ordinary people. Only the “good employee” (slave) degrees would be affordable to the average person.
He’s also pushing real hard for “business-driven” education. In other words, turn a place of higher learning meant to teach people how to think critically, into a glorified tech school where you’re programmed how to be a good employee.
He’s also pushing for another huge cut in corporate taxes in this state – and calling for cutting services to pay for it.
I really, REALLY wish there was some way to legally remove him and the other Republicans from office immediately, so we can start turning this state around. Unfortunately, no recalls permitted.

I live in Texas. I didn’t think anyone could be a bigger idiot and asshole than our governor Rick Perry, but it looks like Rick Scott is pretty close. He and Perry are on the same page when it comes to education and ‘voting rights’. Voting rights for white right-wing so-called Christians.

In 2010, too many Americans were about the kind of instant gratification that led them to vote for miscreants like Rick Scott. The fact that he was already known to be a crook should have given Floridians pause, but they were so intent on sticking it to the Democrats, especially the president, that they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. I agree that he should be investigated, but it’s too bad that he has to be voted out. It is my sincere wish that everyone who had to be enormously inconvenienced because of his pig-headed stupidity will remember when it comes to the next gubernatorial election in his state.

I graduated with my MA in 2010, and came close one time to getting a job. The position fell through because of budget cuts (by guess who).
In the 2 years since graduating, I worked a total of 3 months. Because my last job was as a graduate assistant, no unemployment either.
Yeah, I think I’d qualify as inconvenienced by Scott. I won’t forget.

Voter Suppression most certainly is a act of Treason . It’s a violation of the 1st amendmant as well. Undoubtedly the single greatest threat to America is domestic. A full force recruiting drive happens every moment of everyday .propaganda designed to anger and cause paranoia plays on our airwaves everyday on Fox News and Rush limbaugh etc.Anyone with any measurable amount of common sense takes one look at Fox News and knows their lying. If the first thing someone tells you is ” I’m not lying “, immediately know their not lying. Fox News is the only media source with a constant reminder of how honest they are by announcing their ” the only Fair and Balanced news source “.

We need uniform rules for all federal elections. First we need a non-partisan commission to implement and monitor all elections.
1. Automatic registration by social security number. Activated at 18, deactivated by death certificate. Place of residence by SS administration. Updated address and name changes at polling sites by voter.
2. Standardized absentee, early voting hours. Voting day is national holiday.
3. Standardized ballot layout (with paper ballot).
4. Standardized machines and programming.
5. Distribution of polling sites by distance, population, and on bus routes.
6. Identification ONLY by last 4 SS number, name and address. No other requirements needed.

Rick Scott avoided jail once. A investigation by the Feds and the state of Florida should commence immediately, and without AG Pam Bondi who is just another crony. His actions are criminal.

Nice! I like it, the courts must step in and I’d like to see whether Rick Scott is also in violation of the 1980′s court order against the Republicans to not mettle in voter registration.
I think he broke that court order. Just doing the violation by himself as Governor doesn’t absolve him as a representative of the Party and that Party is under Court Order because they are constant and habitual voter rights violators.
Absolutely these things must be reviewed by courts and the law applied for fresh precedent.

i was born and raised in florida. i no longer live there but the rest of my family is still there. what im about to say is gonna strike a nerve but i dont care. rick scott did not get any support fm the black community. it was white folks that put him in office. i dont care if the lt gov is black, she permitted herslf to be used just so she can say that she was the 1st black lt gov of florida. black floridians knew this man was a crook going in and did not support him. so again it was white folks that put this idiot in office and look at what he has done and is currently doing. if anyone needs to go to jail it is this man right here. he is a disgrace to what i once known as florida. i am so sick of what white folks do. u have no one to blame but yourselves. and i dont care if you dont like it because the truth hurts.
