John Boehner is Counting on Liberals to Stab Obama in the Back
By: Jason EasleyJan. 10th, 2013more from Jason Easley
John Boehner has revealed his strategy for winning the next round of fiscal negotiations, and it involves liberals caving and forcing Obama into a bad deal on spending cuts.
This little nugget of insight was buried in the middle of the recent Wall Street Journal story on Boehner, “Mr. Boehner says he has significant Republican support, including GOP defense hawks, on his side for letting the sequester do its work. “I got that in my back pocket,” the speaker says. He is counting on the president’s liberal base putting pressure on him when cherished domestic programs face the sequester’s sharp knife. Republican willingness to support the sequester, Mr. Boehner says, is “as much leverage as we’re going to get.”
Boehner is gambling that conservatives are tougher than liberals. The whole House strategy is to convince liberals that Republicans are going to stick to their guns, and happily eat the defense cuts, in order to slash Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The Speaker’s comments were a tacit admission that the Republican strategy of threatening Democrats, the president, and the left is not working anymore. The president has learned to wait out any threat that House Republicans make, because in the end, he knows they will cave. Speaker Boehner needs a new weapon to use against the White House, and he believes that weapon is the left’s inability to stand together.
Since splitting the left is the stated Republican strategy, stories about the president’s desire to cut earned entitlements attributed to anonymous sources should start popping up in the mainstream media over the next month or so. House Republicans tried this exact tactic during the fiscal cliff negotiations, and like clockwork the professional outrage machine on the left jumped in and started doing the GOP’s dirty work for them. (In the case of the fiscal cliff, Obama had floated a thought on Social Security as part of a deal that he knew Republicans would reject. Thus, the president used the left’s outrage machine as political cover in order to appear moderate.)
The problem with Speaker Boehner’s strategy is that it isn’t based in reality. The Republican Party is completely fractured. The divide among congressional Republicans has trickled the whole way down to the base. The traditional behaviors of each party base are currently so reversed that Democrats are deeply united right now. In fact, the left has united on fighting Citizens United, voter ID laws, and changing the filibuster rules. The left is also united on the broad principle of protecting earned entitlements.
Boehner’s talk of Republicans supporting the defense cuts in the sequester was a complete bluff. For months, congressional Republicans have been trying desperately to avoid the military cuts. Speaker Boehner is hoping that the left gets so caught up in their panic over Social Security and Medicare cuts that they don’t see how panicked his own side is about the defense cuts.
The inevitable Republican propaganda about Obama’s support for slashing Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will be coming soon through the mainstream media. The people on the left who earn their living by promoting outrage and fear will run with it.
If Democrats and the left can keep their disagreements to the details while agreeing on the overall goal, the fractures within the Republican Party will cause Boehner’s latest half baked strategy to crumble again.

FREER TRADE WITH CHINA.
Washington Post reported a study on 2000 PNTR or Permanent Normal Trade Relations
passed by President Clinton. The study concludes that “freer trade with China cut manufacturing jobs by one third”. Eliminated tariffs on Chinese goods will not return anytime soon.
We have closed 58,000 plants. Millions of jobs in small communities lost have hurt local economies.
My home town lost textiles and apparel to China. The mill hill villages look like poor poor.
Shame on Clinton. It hurts. Add Nafta. 800,000 jobs to Mexico. President Clinton, greatest job creator in America. China, Mexico. Thanks.

Clinton isnt free of blame, but NAFTA was a Reagan Republican / corporate America idea and HW Bush had already signed it for the US . Clinton signed after the other nations ratified it

a bit off topic clarence, but i understand what you’re saying.
China was a big boo boo…the biggest lie ever, we NEED world economy. we don’t.
however, i do concede if we are to expand in this manner, Mexico is a poor neighbor and this would help on many levels, including less illegal crossings.
but our primary goal presently is to bring jobs back to the US…now i am WAY off topic

Reading up on NAFTA, it has killed many Mexican farms and other industrys. Worse, now that Mexican workers are asking for more and more money/benefits, corps are moving to other 3rd world places. I worked in Mexico (2000) to assist in setting up a quality department in a plant there(Half US owned) and its already gone.

I worked in a school district with a lot of migrant farm workers, both legal and illegal. It broke my heart to see these hard working folk working for a pittance, and no dignity, because they couldn’t afford to work their own farm in Mexico. Its not just NAFTA, its American subsidies of our farms. In these people’s case, it was subsidies on corn.

Totally agreed.
But you should learn to use periods (.) at the end of a sentence and commas (,) to separate thoughts. It was hard to read your comment.

It’s so annoying and frustrating when the professional left jumps all over the POTUS. I sure hope they can learn to stay united for the better and bigger good of the country. Today’s news is attacking the POTUS’s diversity appointments. Are you kidding? The POTUS has been hugely diverse and will continue to be so. Give the man a break and let him get his team going. He will always be about diversity. Susan Rice was never nominated and chose to withdraw from the circus herself. She’s still a member of the President’s cabinet and will remain UN ambassador which was initially made a cabinet position by Obama. Boehner and his extreme tea party extremists need to be stopped. This extreme party needs to be defeated so we can get back to our real democracy. Thanks for the post.

This should be no surprise to anybody. The GOP has been doing things similiar to this for a long time.
However, it should be noted that Boehner’s strategy will not work as well this time. The usual “liberal” suspects are very small in number and there’s more awareness about their existence. Also, as this article correctly states, the left is more united right now. It’s the GOP that’s falling apart.
Besides, Boehner is the worst Speaker ever. He’s woefully incompetent to carry anything that resembles a viable strategy. Boehner’s incompetence undermines any complaints the Professional Left has about Obama’s “caving.”
Anyway, when those stories about threats to entitlement programs start riling up the usual “liberal” suspects, I will make sure to send a link to this article.
Oh, and here’s one more thing Boehner has forgotten. Public opinion does not support him.

The speaker needs to learn how to “count”. Just trying to stir up some shit, perhaps?
Unlike the rigid “tow the party line or else” terms of being GOP-It’s our Job to critique our lawmakers, object if warranted and to take action if needed……
I don’t know what boehner thinks he’s “onto” but the way this reads and imho, he isn’t putting too much thought into this bs (or much of anything else).

Excellent post, Jason. Good deconstruction of Boehner’s strategy & it’s fatal flaws, if we can keep #proLeft in check.

Boehner trouble with you is YOU NEVER LEARN; the Majority put Obama in OFFICE to do exactly what he is doing…He has NOT LET THEM DOWN; countrary to the GOP who keeps stabbing them in the back over and over and over again. You sir have a lot to learn; and politics is not your forte.

So, basically, Agent Orange is counting on the same strategy that made him cave on the fiscal cliff {being stabbed in the back}, to make President Obama cave on spending cuts . . . that about right?
Yeah, that sounds like a winner, Johnny boy. Is it 2014 yet?

Hopefully those of us backing the President are informed enough, to keep these tactics from doing much harm. Easy enough to see through, if one “thinks through” the politics and punditry. Feels to me that the rabble roused on the left doesn’t even come close in volume to that on the right, and as GOP tactics are generally self-defeating, should not cause much turbulence. Besides, our President is “wicked smaaahhht” and knows how to handle these flagrant fouls.

Boner plan do have an ounce of a chance to succeed, if you look what the left is griping about today.. 1) PBO cabinet picks and this phony diversity complaints, Which all the news outlet are jumping on and some dem. senators (incl. Barney Franks, Bernie Sanders).. 2) Jack Lew signature nonsense…
But this become a planner for the left/liberals the GOP nutcase can float anything out there. First it’s pick-up by faux, then the bloggers pick it up and then msm runaway with it without checking for factual evicdence.. Until a few weeks later or months…
Then the narratives become “Obama need someone to push his message.” IMO, first the left/liberals need to stop letting media with false equivalence between 2 parties.. 2) Stop knee-jerking everytime they hear something negative until they know the facts & source and 3) learn how to have each other back & learn to work out disagreement away from cameras… Also, learn who their true enemies are..

Boehner and the GOP is underestimating the Libs again. In giving credit to any of them that they are smart enough to do the right thing. They relected this administration. What makes conservatives think that they are any smarter now than they were in November?
