John Boehner Refuses to Allow the House to Vote on Sequester Replacement Bill
On the same day that John Boehner told the Senate to get off its ass, he refused to allow the House to vote on a sequester replacement bill.
According to Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), “Tonight marks the third time this year that House Republicans have refused to take up a Democratic substitute to the sequester while failing to put forth their own sequester alternative. With 750,000 jobs at stake – not to mention the furlough of hundreds of thousands of federal employees – this is a total abdication of leadership from Speaker Boehner and his caucus.”
Speaker Boehner’s stock line is that the House has already acted, but this is a lie. The House acted in the last Congress. The two bills that were passed in the 112 Congress died as soon as the 113th Congress was sworn in. The House has to pass a sequester replacement bill, but Republicans are refusing to allow Van Hollen’s bill to come to the floor for a vote.
His bill has adopted Obama’s balanced approach. It contains the Buffett Rule, and it cuts subsidies for agribusiness and Big Oil. The bill also contains a 2/3 cuts to 1/3 revenue ratio. Republicans refuse to allow the bill to come to the floor for a vote for one simple reason. They are afraid that it will pass. There are likely enough Republicans that will cross party lines and join with universal Democratic support to pass the bill. The Senate version of Van Hollen’s bill will be passed easily, and Obama would sign it in about a half a second.
If Boehner is serious about avoiding the sequester, why isn’t the House voting on anything? The answer is because Boehner doesn’t have the votes to pass anything. In May, 16 Republicans voted against their own party’s sequester replacement bill. The number of Republican defections jumped to 21 when the Republican sequester replacement option was passed again in December. Republicans currently have a 17 vote majority in the House, so the odds are that Van Hollen’s bill would pass if it came to the floor for a vote.
By refusing to act Boehner is revealing the hypocrisy behind his tough, but empty words. House Republicans have not only embraced the sequester, they are actively working to make sure that it isn’t avoided.
It’s clear that the person who needs to get off his ass in Washington is John Boehner.

It’s probably going to take a lot more than just a couple of flushes of our government’s plumbing systems to send all of these Republican party members and their leaders to the places where they belong. In my opinion. But the gusts of fresh air that this country receives and breathes after they are gone may be enough to propel our country forward too finally escape the “dark-ages” of the past, where it appears, these puppets of the “elite” (2%) wanted to take the 98% of this country; the U.S.A. ; In my opinion.

I hope that more and more Americans see the disastrous end result of either not voting at all or voting out of pique. These idiots are not only inept but also dangerously ignorant, and so are the fools cheering their destructiveness on. They have absolutely no business in government because it’s not about serving the public for them, but only about raw power.

They really voted out of pique when they did not oust Governor Walker in Wisconsin. Although I am not certain that the recall votes were actually counted. The election was call waaaaaay too early, certainly before all votes were in. In my recollection all the networks were declaring a Walker victory at 7:30 with only 21% of the votes in. At least that is what the television set said.

Do any of you people actually watch what is going on? The House has passed a budget every year, has the senate voted on it? Maybe if we had a budget to work with, we wouldn’t have to have these cuts. Not only was the sequester Obama’s idea, it was specific to spending cuts only, not revenue increases. Obama already got a revenue increase a couple of months ago and blew it with one sneeze to bail out liberals in NJ to the tune of $50 billion.
BTW: the program by Regan was for people to have a phone for emergencies and INTERVIEWS! Not to sit on a corner tweeting and facebooking.

The sequester is a good start and I thank Obama for insisting on it. NOW – dissolve the Dept of Education, and cut the rest of the departments by another 50%. Cut the defense spending by shutting down unneeded bases all around the world. There are three of them down here in south Texas alone. I am sure there are a lot more. Thank You Mr. President for kick starting something that has needed to be done for many years.

Depends on how far back you go in history. My grandfather could read and write better with only a 3rd grade education than any of my kids could graduating from High School. Schools were dealt with on a local level – no federal “Department of Education”. I would LOVE for all of my tax dollars that are set aside for education to go directly to our schools rather than sending $1.00 to Washington and only getting $0.70 back (along with a long list of how to educate our kids). I am not calling for less government, just less federal government and more control at the local and state level.

Back in your fathers day, education was trhe reason to go to school. However the schools in different state taught different things.
I went to a one-room school for a little while as a kid. And right now I live in Tennessee where the literary rate among young people is just now starting to improve. when I moved here from Michigan where illiteracy was almost unheard of, I had to teach new employees certain subjects as orientation. I had to write some of the kids names on their test papers because they couldn’t even write their own name. And these kids were 20 years old
However here in Tennessee there are movements to get rid of public schools, force us to pay for charter and private schools that teach religion as a major in the primary subjects of school as a minor. I’m sorry, but in my opinion leaving things to the states moved on a long time ago. That is not to say I am not in agreement with how money is apportioned to the schools.
The movements I referred to above are active in many states. One of them is called students first. These are religious-based groups who want you to pay for private schools. It is my belief that all charter and private schools should pay for themselves. If a parent chooses to send his kids to a charter school then they should take on the burden for the cost of the education. I see no reason to support schools that will be teaching religion and dumbing down the kids
let’s not forget that we still have a great many kids who graduate and go on to college. Calling schools a failure is erroneous. Calling the teachers failures is erroneous. The problem lies with the parents who don’t give a rip their kids get educated or not

REALLY – That is the best you can do? One blunder?? You don’t have enough space on this page to list even half of the blunders in education created by the DOE. You can start with No Child Left Behind and create a list as long as you like. Today’s public schools are no more than a baby sitting service. Students can’t be expelled for much of anything anymore. We are too busy monitoring students that don’t even want to be in school. This leaves us with less time to devote to the ones who do want an education. Let us have ALL our tax dollars for education and we can do a much better job educating our kids.

Thank you Shiva for a more intelligent response. Here in Texas they are also moving more and more to charter schools. The results seem to be that the students are getting a little better education than those in the public school system. I believe that some of the reason is because the Charter schools are not bound to create football teams, soccer teams, etc. (all of which costs millions of dollars). Another part of it is because the students and parents who want to focus more on the education and less on the lunch menu and/or sports are moving over to the Charter schools.
Where I disagree with you a little is that we pay taxes specifically for the education system. In other words, we are “being forced to pay” for an education system, whether it is through taxation or out of pocket for private schools. Why should we we be forced to pay those taxes without giving the tax payer a choice of where those dollars are spent. If the tax payer (you and I) want an education system that focus’s on education rather than sports, then shouldn’t we have that choice? It is our money that is funding all of this.
